The Weekly Substandard — Highlights & Recurring Bits

A companion to the full episode catalogue. Two kinds of entries:

• Recurring bits — running gags/segments, with their origin and every reappearance (with episode + timestamp references so you can jump straight to them).
• Best-of episodes — standout individual episodes worth starting with.

⭐ Recurring bits

1. "I'm sure it's fine" — the signature sign-off

The show's deadpan closing catchphrase (usually JVL's last word over the outtakes), delivered as everything falls apart. Appears in ~110 of 156 episodes — the single most-repeated runner on the show.

• Origin: Adaptation: A Jack Reacher Roundtable and other books that become movies (established immediately as the outtakes button).
• Reach: roughly 110 of the 156 episodes — effectively the show's default closer, so there's little point naming them all.

2. Gene — Vic's movie-reviewing alter ego

Vic's Gene Shalit impression ("Gene") crashes the show to deliver punny, star-doling reviews (often reviewing the wrong movie). Appears in ~53 episodes across the run — showcased most fully in Summer Clip Show, the listener-made Gene clip montage.

3. The Dishwasher Saga — JVL vs. his Bosch (and Lowe's, and his family)

JVL's multi-month odyssey: obsessing over decibel ratings, canceling/re-ordering for a 39-dB machine, a Lowe's delivery meltdown, a five-day install, and the war over the protective plastic film ("the little stainless-steel condom") his family keeps trying to peel off.

• Origin: Incredibles 2, Pixar, and Dishwashers ~00:59 — buying the Bosch; the logarithmic-decibel monologue; cancels the 42-dB for the 39-dB "so I don't resent it every night."
• Arc:
• Jurassic World, Dishwashing Drama, and Sand ~01:59–06:36 — the Lowe's fiasco ("nobody who listens to this show should ever buy anything from Lowe's again"); refuses delivery, buys from "Lord Bezos."
• Sicario and Sequels Ranked ~01:00–02:23 — installed after sitting in the kitchen 5 days; "flood mode."
• Ant-Man, Cruising, and Dishwasher Trolling ~04:06–09:41 — absolving himself of guilt (blames the EPA); the plastic-film / "stainless-steel condom" fight; instructs family not to peel it.
• Skyscraper, Disaster Flicks, and Baseball Cards ~01:30 — magnetic loading-instructions placard for the family.
• First Man and Concierge Bee Keepers! ~00:56 — "the flashpoint we have now reached in my marriage"; wife complains about the decibels.
• Halloween and Exotic Swing Sets ~04:23–05:00 — wife tweets pictures at Bosch Global measuring the noise.
• Later callbacks in Kubrick, 2001, and James Gunn, Christopher Robin, Hook, and the Kenmore of Cars, The Meg and Summer Box Office 2018, and Venom, Texas, and Watches (where a priest literally blesses the dishwasher).

4. Prana vs. "Prada" pants — Sonny won't let it go

JVL mentions his beloved Prana mountain-climbing jeans; Sonny immediately (and forever) pretends to hear "Prada," recasting JVL as a man in leather "assless chaps."

• Origin: Funny How? The Substandard Tackles Scorsese ~55:49 ("P-R-A-N-A, it's mountain-climbing gear… they make fantastic jeans").
• Appearances: A Farewell to Malls (~03:57–05:45 the new jeans arrive; "the Prada factory"), Are Movie Twist Endings Overrated? (~08:20), does Beauty and the Beast (~03:03–05:27, "Prada weather," "if you had Prana on the bingo card…").

5. Scorsese vs. Kubrick — the dueling superfan trolls

The hosts needle each other over their sacred directors, in both directions:

• Scorsese — Sonny trolls JVL — Funny How? The Substandard Tackles Scorsese ~13:02+ (the "Scor-SES-eh" pronunciation bit; Sonny, the Scorsese partisan, ribbing JVL over it).
• Kubrick / 2001 — JVL trolls Sonny — Alien Invasion (plus Thanksgiving tips!) ~25:46 (JVL breezily confesses he has "never seen 2001," to Sonny the Kubrick superfan's horror) and the full Kubrick, 2001, and James Gunn Kubrick/2001 symposium.

6. Structural recurring segments

• Spirit / Whiskey of the Week — nearly every full episode ends with a tasting (Vic narrates; the brand changes weekly).
• Corrections — the recurring self-flagellation segment where JVL owns the prior week's errors (debut There's no crying in podcasts!, running throughout).
• "Question." — Sonny/Vic's deadpan one-word cross-examination interjections (prominent in the dishwasher episodes).

7. Vic ❤️ Hermione Granger

Vic's not-entirely-ironic devotion to Hermione Granger / Emma Watson, needled by the others.

• Origin: Oscars Episode ~59:32 (Prisoner of Azkaban time-turner tangent).
• Appearances: Reviews Guardians of The Galaxy and Pizza! ~09:34 (the recap gag: "Vic likes Hermione Granger. He really likes Hermione Granger"), Blade Runner 2049, Harvey Weinstein, and the Lost Episode ~57:54, YA Adaptations and Pillow Talk ~41:18.
