Vic00:00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of The Substandard, sponsored by Quip Electric Toothbrush and Casper Mattress. I'm Victor Matus along with Sonny Bunch and Jonathan V. Last. I'd like to remind you TheSubstandard is available on iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher. Just look at our podcast and search for TheSubstandard. You'll easily find us. Please subscribe, tell your friends, and leave a review. Gentlemen, how are we? JVL, welcome to the Free Beacon Studio 2A. What are you doing here?
JVL00:00:45Hello, boys. The Free Beacon is the happiest place on earth, as our buddy Aaron Harrison always says. This is the first time we've ever recorded it from here, is it not? Yes, that's right.
Sonny00:00:56Vic and I recorded a mini here once.
JVL00:00:59We're going to do it from here every single week. That would be great. It's so much better. We have room. It's not 84 degrees in the studio.
Sonny00:01:07Free soda and snacks. Free soda and snacks.
JVL00:01:09Free soda and snacks. In The Weekly Standard, they only charge you $1.10 for each soda.
Sonny00:01:13That used to be the first real job that I had was an intern at The Weekly Standard, and this was many years ago. And the thing I was most shocked by? Free sodas. Oh. Free sodas. Crazy, right? And I just like, this is when I developed my 12-soda-a-day habit. Because I just would drink, I would just drink them nonstop.
Vic00:01:33That was diabetic Sonny Bunch.
Sonny00:01:35No, well, it was always Diet Coke. I mean, it's full of cancer, Sonny Bunch. Whatever chemicals they have in the diet soda that cause cancer, I've got all of them in my heart and brain and kidneys.
Vic00:01:47Did you ever have to get drinks for any of the writers ever while you were an intern? No, we never asked interns to get drinks.
Sonny00:01:51No. I may have poured, like, bourbon in somebody's office. For Mr. Carlson? For Mr. Labor.
JVL00:01:59I am 100% positive that The Weekly Standard is the only office in Washington where the principals, like Fred Barnes and Bill Kristol, would, if they were walking downstairs to get coffee, would walk through the office saying, I'm heading downstairs to get coffee, does anybody want anything? That's true. There is no other office in this town.
Sonny00:02:19Lord knows I wouldn't do it here, at the Free Beacon here.
Vic00:02:21I once had to get water for David Brooks. That's actually true. He was in a radio show and his throat was drying up.
JVL00:02:29I remember. I remember what it was, actually. It was his giant thing, the Bobos, where he was doing one of these marathon back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back. So many radio interviews. Radio interviews, selling the book, like the week it came out. And he was, like, flagging you and me from his office. He was a machine. With those giant monkey arms of his.
Vic00:02:48Do you remember how he did the book, by the way? He laid out all the index cards all on the floor. The papers everywhere. Want to know how to write a best-selling book? Index cards on the floor.
JVL00:02:57I'll never forget his line. I'll never forget his line to you when you made fun of him for the arm length.
Vic00:03:02Again, that was not me. It was David Tell who made that joke.
JVL00:03:05From across the pool table, he said, watch it, Mattis. You're within striking distance. Striking distance. Striking distance.
Vic00:03:11JVL, how are you otherwise?
JVL00:03:14I am good. Good. I received a gift yesterday from my colleague, Priscilla Jensen, that I wanted to share with you guys. Because it is a vintage. In Philadelphia sports lore, there are two figures. Two, who loom very large because they are so conflicted in the public consciousness. One of whom is Ricky Waters, and the other whom? T.O., number 81, Terrell Owens.
Vic00:03:43Who I just found out is still playing. Well, not anymore. He got injured, or he got a concussion or something. He was like, Tampa Bay? He's 45. He's my age.
Sonny00:03:53I thought he just got inducted into the Hall of Fame.
JVL00:03:56I can't imagine he's still playing.
Sonny00:03:58There's no chance Terrell Owens is still playing. Terrell Owens is on an active roster.
Vic00:04:00I saw a thing on the Elevator News. You know the Elevator News I'm talking about? I do. I do know the Elevator News. And I said, Terrell Owens, what is he doing there? Maybe it was a different one.
JVL00:04:08If my internet was, I would effort that. Yeah. Sorry. T.O., I mean, do people remember what happened when he went crazy in Philadelphia and was at a public war with Donovan McNabb, and T.O. was doing sit-ups in his driveway in Morristown, New Jersey, my town, with giant news cameras all around him,
Sonny00:04:29and he's, like, doing push-ups and doing sit-ups and...
JVL00:04:32Are you meeting me on purpose? No, no. I'm just... You don't want to. I'm sorry. I'm just bored. I'm just bored. No, no, never mind.
Sonny00:04:38No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Sonny, how was your weekend? I was literally just testing the volume, because we are in a slightly different situation. I wanted to just test one thing.
JVL00:04:47Sonny, how was your weekend? No, no, no, keep going. No, I'm done.
Sonny00:04:49T.O. was... My favorite thing about T.O. during this stretch of time was when he was doing the, like, crunches in his driveway. Yes. Where all the cameras were there watching him, like, what is going on? Why are you doing this? He'd just gone crazy.
JVL00:05:05So the Flash Update Flash finally got into... was allowed to pitch in the new club. All right. Against the 12-year-olds. Went three strong innings, gave up no hits, hit three batters. One of whom was this huge kid who cried the entire way down to first base. And then the next batter, comes up and Cody throws one up by his chin. And the kid starts, like, hyperventilating. He steps out of the box and doesn't want to get back in.
Vic00:05:40Man, is Flash doing this intentionally to scare kids? No, it was raining. No, no, it was raining. Ah, the slippery ball.
JVL00:05:47He was having trouble holding the ball. No, it's hard. But I felt bad. The big kid, this big kid, got hit three times during the course of the game. By different pitchers? No, by the three different pitchers who pitched. Each pitcher hit him. Was he crowding the plate? No. No, this kid was doing nothing wrong. He's just this big guy who just... And I just thought to myself, if you're him, you leave this game and be like, I don't want to play anymore. Like, this is not fun. I don't get to swing at baseball. I just stand up there and I get hit.
Sonny00:06:14Well, he gets on base. He needs a lot of walks. He needs to learn about that on-base percentage. Sonny, how was your weekend? It was pretty good. Basement, done. Hey, congratulations. I have a picture. I have a picture of the... I have a picture of the new bookshelf favela. It's not ready yet because I haven't quite... This is exciting. I haven't organized everything, but here's my new...
JVL00:06:42Wow.
Sonny00:06:43That's really nice. It's pretty nice.
Vic00:06:45I haven't seen a room with that much built-in bookshelves since Jody Bottom lived in D.C. in Alger Hiss' old townhouse.
Sonny00:06:54Oh, that's a little interesting bit of trivia. That's true. The guy who was building... The guy who was building the bookshelves was like, this is a lot of books. You got a lot of books. You must read a lot. And he hadn't actually seen the books. I was just like, yeah, I got some books. And frankly, it's like there's more bookshelf space than I have books. You will fill it up. You will fill it up. I'm not Robert Messenger. If you've ever been to Messenger's house when he was... His old one here in D.C., there were just books everywhere. Whole shelves of just trollop. But this is a pretty... And the nice thing, JVL, you notice the DVD racks? Those shelves are fully adjustable.
JVL00:07:38So I can make those bookshelves if I need to. DVD height or Blu-ray height? I could do...
Sonny00:07:43No, it's not quite that sensitive. But it's easier just to do everything the same height. Question. Yes. Are you at all troubled by the fact
JVL00:07:55that this is a clear case of gentrification? Because the favelas have been torn down for this beautiful planned community
Sonny00:08:01for the more affluent books? Let me tell you, I actually... And the cheap bookshelves are no longer allowed to live here? I built in some elements from the old favela to give it the feeling of the favela. 8% of all space is still reserved for favela-like bookshelves. You'll notice in the corner, if you look where the two walls meet, one of the shelves goes all the way against the wall and the other shelf goes into the shelf. A little bit, yes. So there's a lot of... There's some favela-like overlap there where it's not quite... Hidden behind... That's the 4% where the... That's very nice. It's beautiful. Are you happy? What else is down there?
Vic00:08:41It's man-cavish. Are you going to have a little bar?
Sonny00:08:43Well, this is... I used to have a man cave where the favela was. Now I've got a room. Oh, okay. It's a reading room. It's a library.
Vic00:08:50Oh, come on. I'd take that. Is that the whole of the...
Sonny00:08:52What else is down there? It can't just be the bathroom. We also have a full bath down there. Full bath. Do you have a bedroom down there? The main space has been converted into a bedroom with the city. Our taxes will probably go up, but... Plus fireplace. No, no. There's a fireplace down there.
JVL00:09:07It wouldn't be...
Sonny00:09:08It's not a bedroom by code, though, right?
JVL00:09:09It is a bedroom by code. Oh, so you have a window. It's got an egress window.
Sonny00:09:14I'm sorry. It's got a closet. It's got a fireplace. It's got... You could get a dedicated... Was the bathroom a full bathroom when you started this, or was it a half bath that you turned into a full? It was a half bath that we turned into a full.
JVL00:09:25Oh, sorry.
Sonny00:09:26So sorry. But it's nice. I mean, this will... No, I meant tax-wise. Oh, yeah. That's another... Oh, sure. I mean, this project not only cost us tens of thousands of dollars...
Vic00:09:38Which is why you work at the Beacon, you know.
Sonny00:09:40Well, this is... I actually got a raise to pay for this. I pled my case. I said... They gave you a little extra. Can you give me another $700,000? Another $700,000. Another. And Harrison said so. I was like, yeah, that seems fair.
JVL00:09:53Yeah.
Sonny00:09:53Okay.
Vic00:09:53That must be nice.
JVL00:09:54Victorino, how are you?
Vic00:09:56How was your race? Race? Oh, it's funny. You should... It's funny you should ask. Oh, look. Look what I got here. You got a medal? I got a medal.
Sonny00:10:05You got a medal. Did you win?
Vic00:10:07And I can't fit it over my headphones on my head. Yeah, sure. It's the headphones that are the problem.
Sonny00:10:14Phew.
Vic00:10:15That was a close one. Wow.
Sonny00:10:17May I?
Vic00:10:18May I? Yeah, please.
JVL00:10:19This is heavy. He's talking about the medal, by the way.
Sonny00:10:22A heavy medal.
Vic00:10:24Yeah, it's much different from the Disney Castaway. A rubber medal. This is a nice thing. It's just for a 5K, but for me, a 5K might as well be a marathon, because I'm not doing a marathon. Maybe a 10K. I don't know. I heard you have to... Stop.
JVL00:10:36Start from the beginning. Oh, tell me everything about it. Well, this is my first... How was your weather?
Vic00:10:41Oh, it was cloudy. It was rainy, just as it's been for the last two weeks. I mean, there's no sun, but it was cool. But cooler? Had that heat broken? It was cool. It was very cool. Like, low 70s, upper 60s, so it was actually quite... Perfect, great weather. A little bit of sprinkle of rain, but that's okay. It's just enough to keep you cool. It held up. What surprised me, having... I mean, again, the one in Disney doesn't really count in the sense that it's not... I mean, it's a 5K, but, you know, it's just people from the ship. What surprised me are the crowds, and it's not even Marine Corps-sized crowd. This 5K had a little over 3,000 runners, but for me, I've never been in that sort of environment where everybody's crammed in. So when you said, you know, you sort of start towards the back or whatever, I think Aaron and I, my sister-in-law, Erin Dwyer, we were... We were way too far in the back. So once the... I mean, you are... The weirdest thing is when they say, go, and everybody starts running, you're not actually
JVL00:11:29running for, like, the first couple... Well, sure, but the time is... Your time doesn't start until your chip crosses the line.
Vic00:11:34Even after the chip crossed the line, people were still shuffling their way into normal speed, and at which point, my brother-in-law, Captain Bill Dwyer, said, I gotta go. I'll see you later. And he left.
JVL00:11:44I didn't realize Bill was running as well. I thought it was just you and Aaron.
Vic00:11:47Last-minute decision, he decided to go, representing, I guess, the Arlington Firefighters.
JVL00:11:52The good part about this, though, is you... It forces you to start slow. Yeah, yes, oh, totally, totally. Because you don't... What you really want to do is guard against going out fast.
Vic00:11:59But you're also dodging and bobbing and weaving, and... Right, but that's fun. It is. It was interesting. You do pass a lot of people, but it was kind of frustrating, because you're starting in the back, and as you make your way towards what you think is the front, you're still seeing people walking. And it's like, okay, you started in the front, and you're walking. Or a guy who starts running, and then he suddenly turns and starts walking backwards to have a conversation in the middle of the 5K with other runners. Okay, this... Come on. You know, what's going on? What's going on here? So we started going... Mr. Serious. I know. Now we're... I'm not doing a fun run. I'm doing a race. That was Sonny Bunch's voice, by the way.
JVL00:12:34Respect the race, buddy. Turn around. I was so...
Vic00:12:36Run like a real runner.
JVL00:12:37Run like a professional runner. Run like a professional runner.
Vic00:12:40And then you gotta get... Get off the... And then you gotta... Don't even get me started on the wheelchair, people. Oh, no. Just kidding. I'm just kidding. I'm just kidding. Get off the roof. Get off the dang roof. So going around them, what I... And I kept up with Erin. She wanted to... She wanted to be sub-30. And, in fact, we were. And... That's great. I finished 28.49, according to the athletes. That's a great...
JVL00:13:07That is a great race, Victorino. According to...
Vic00:13:10Thank you very much. According to my MapMyRun app, they call it negative splits. So, like, the first mile was nine and a half minutes. The second mile was nine. And then the third was eight and a half. That is awesome. In case if you're wondering, Captain Bill Dwyer did 23.36. That was his time for the 5K.
JVL00:13:28That's fine. Look, you're working up to that.
Vic00:13:30He's a real man. He's a real man. You know, you're an editor. What surprised me are a number of kids who actually did pretty good, like, getting around a 5K. Because most kids like the idea, oh, I want to go run.
JVL00:13:41Kids, give me an eight.
Vic00:13:41Like 10-year-olds, you know? But, I mean, they don't want to go. 10-year-olds are perfectly good 5K. But, you know, but it is. It's a lot for... You know, kids have, I think, their sense of what a mile is is not...
JVL00:13:50Now, 10 and 10... By 10, you can run a 5K. You can run a 5K in a real way. Man, it's crazy. At eight, it's a little bit harder.
Vic00:13:56Yes. So, I kept up, and Aaron did... I think... I kept up with her in sprinting. The only thing... I thought about you, JVL, because you talked about the time where you, like, Kermit the Frog's running past you and... Oh, yeah. ...and things. A guy wearing a Kevlar vest, pushing twins in a stroller, running past me. And I'm running.
JVL00:14:13And he was still going past me. You know what, though? It just happens. You know what, though? I bet chip time... Yeah. ...his chip time was slower than yours. Oh, really? That's what I bet. We'll never know. That's the great thing about the chip races, is you can delude yourself into thinking that... According to the chip. Look, I mean, maybe he's passing me here, but that's not the real time. The real time is the chip time. No, no, no. The chip time, man. And he probably started before I did. Oh, yeah, yes.
Vic00:14:33That's absolutely right. And so then at the near... Near the end, I just said to Aaron, I said, go for it. Just, you know, get a better time, and then she zoomed past. But that's, like, at the final stretch.
JVL00:14:42And then I could feel my legs... Final quarter? Yeah. Did you work the final quarter mile?
Vic00:14:46We did. We really ran. And it does spread out. And then it starts to crowd up, because you're going down Route 1, up the ramp towards Pentagon City, and then it gets a little bit tighter again on the curve, and then you double back. But it was good. And so 28.49 was my time. And I like... You know what's kind of nice? The people who cheer you on. Yeah. It's weird to be on the inside for once in my life, where people are honking horns, a bagpiper is playing. I love the bagpipers. And then a lot of high school cheerleaders. But... But I don't know. Suddenly, like, blood, like, left my brain. I don't know. Like, it rushed out of my head. I just started getting very lightheaded for some reason. But anyway. So that was fine. And then... And you know who I saw at the 5Cast? Our beacon colleague Cameron Cawthorn was there, cheering on some of his housemates, Sonny. And I saw Nick Continetti and his wife Laura, so Matt Continetti's brother.
Sonny00:15:39You didn't see Matt?
Vic00:15:41No, no, no. Nick made a joke about that, but I'm not going to repeat it, because, you know... Here's work here. Because I work here. Did you have fun? You know what? I did. I did. But I'm not bitten by the bug, okay? I'm not like, oh, I've got to do a marathon next. Because, like, Aaron's doing Marine Corps Marathon in October. I'm not there with my joints, my ankles, my knees. Are you bitten by the bug enough to do it again? A 5K, yes. So... I mean, I don't want to have to train. I don't want to have to take more time out of my life to train. And I understand, like, 10-milers you have to train for, because I thought, oh, maybe... Not really. Okay.
JVL00:16:13Not really. You could go up, all the way up to 10 miles without ever really running more than four or five at a stretch.
Vic00:16:21All right. Okay, because, you know... I mean, you won't run it competitively,
JVL00:16:23but you're not looking to do that competitively.
Vic00:16:24I run three times a week, 30 minutes at a time. You can do a 10-miler if you're doing that. This is kind of encouraging. Good. In fact, Bill asked me if I had carb-loaded before the race, and I just said, you know, Bill, I carb-load every day.
JVL00:16:38Just because you never know.
Sonny00:16:39I'm going to throw this out here right now.
Vic00:16:39Because you never know
JVL00:16:40when you're going to do a 5K.
Sonny00:16:41You better have your bowl of pasta. We got this hurricane coming. You want to be... I'm going to carb-load. You're going to be carb.
JVL00:16:45You don't know. I'm going to throw this out there right now. JBL. Why don't the three of us do a 5K together? F*** that.
Vic00:16:54I'm totally serious.
JVL00:16:55Why not?
Vic00:16:57It'd be fun. Why don't we do a race together? We could raise money for a substandard 5K.
JVL00:17:01Yeah, raise money for booze.
Vic00:17:03I would do it just to have... I would pay money just to see Sonny in shorts.
Sonny00:17:08Sonny in shorts. He won't do it. I would do it. Oh, I would do it. But I would do it by getting an account. Tab, Uber, and meeting you guys. And going around. There's a funny Office episode where they do an Office fun run. It's a great episode. And like Oscar and... Like all the guys who just don't... Just go to a Mexican restaurant and have margaritas. They do. That's what I would do.
Vic00:17:32And then they cheat and they go around. And of course, Michael Scott has the giant plate of fettuccine Alfredo like 30 minutes before the run because he has a carb load.
JVL00:17:40So anyway... So is that a no? You guys wouldn't want to run together? You know I'm game. You know I'm game.
Vic00:17:44Would you want to do it together? I'm game. I would do it. I would do like the 9... We can all do the 9-11-5K next year if you wanted to do that or something. I don't want to wait a year.
Sonny00:17:50Let's do something in like November or December.
JVL00:17:55We'll get back.
Vic00:17:55Let's do the spring. We can think about the spring.
JVL00:17:57Dude, you can train for... You can be ready to run a 5K in three weeks.
Vic00:17:59It's not that Sonny wants to train. It's that he doesn't want to do the run.
Sonny00:18:03Yeah, you don't understand that... You go to the gym all the time. You're in amazing shape. My interest in running... You're like an Adonis. Zero. Yeah. Zero point. But you're not here to do the running. The running is just the thing that's happening while we're actually all together. But we're already together once a week. Which is enough. So why not add another 30 minutes? We can all live together.
Vic00:18:24We can all imagine if we all live together in the same apartment. That's an NBC show.
JVL00:18:28Yes. From 1997. Three podcasters... Anyway, so... And a pizza joint. And a pizza. Three podcasters lose their homes in the financial crisis. They have to live together.
Sonny00:18:41Making their way by reading...
JVL00:18:43Quip ads. So I guess we're not running a fun run together. You know I'm game for it.
Sonny00:18:49And I am... We'd be canceled after three episodes. I'm glad... That would be a three-episode NBC... It'd be like the Wolfgang Puck. No, no. Not the Wolfgang... It wasn't Wolfgang Puck. Who was it? It was the other...
JVL00:18:58Emeril Lagasse. Who had his... Emeril Lagasse, yeah. The one... It was Emeril Lagasse.
Vic00:19:04And remember who the other guest star was? Burt Reynolds. May he rest in peace. Did you kill him? No, I'm not... One of us... I'm pretty sure I didn't...
Sonny00:19:11Somebody who actually listens to this show... Not me. Somebody who actually listens to it should go back and figure out where... The last time. The last time that Vic mentioned Burt Reynolds. The last time that I mentioned Burt Reynolds, who I love. You definitely have mentioned him.
Vic00:19:23Cannonball Run, Cannonball Run 2. Okay. Anyway, I'm glad that I did the 5K, and I'm keeping running as a part of my regular routine now, because I think, as my doctor says, four to six miles, okay, that's good enough. You don't have to do more than that before it starts getting bad on the joints, and keeping up my reduced gluttony, and trying to cut back on...
Sonny00:19:43The RGD.
Vic00:19:43The RG diet, and so cutting back on, you know, if I'm doing any bad eating, or excessive drinking, and other bad habits, but speaking of bad habits, over the weekend, The Nun took the top spot. Wow. I get it, because nuns wear habits. That's good. Habits, yes, at the box office, with 53.5 million. That's a lot. Followed by Crazy Rich Asians, with 13.6 million, and in third place, Peppermint, with 13 million. Really quick thought, Sonny, you were wondering about Crazy Rich Asians, is it, are they crazy rich? Are they crazy and rich? According to Awkwafina, in the movie, crazy rich. Like, a lot of money. Crazy rich. That's crazy rich. But, we don't want to get into Awkwafina, because, you know. Problematic. Yes, exactly.
JVL00:20:30Okay, so none of us saw The Nun, I assume that. I never even heard of The Nun.
Vic00:20:35It's part of The Conjuring, what is it, series? The Conjuring Universe. The Conjuring, are you, how familiar are you, Sonny, with The Conjuring Universe?
Sonny00:20:40I'm familiar with The Conjuring Universe, in that I've seen The Conjuring Universe,
Vic00:20:43Is everything a prequel to that now?
Sonny00:20:47So, basically, there's The Conjuring. The fascinating thing, so there's The Conjuring, and then, the, like, first scene in The Conjuring is these two paranormal explorers telling the story of this evil haunted doll, which then, the story that they tell in literally, like, three minutes of screen time, that is like a little mini-movie on its own that starts the film, was then expanded into a whole movie on its own. Hmm. Called, I think, I think it was Annabelle. Right. And then there was an Annabelle Origins movie. Creation. Annabelle Creation. Annabelle Creation. Right, right. So, there was also The Conjuring Part II, and now there's The Nun. So, I, my understanding is that this is either the fifth or sixth movie in The Conjuring
JVL00:21:30universe.
Sonny00:21:31And it's making. These movies make so much money. So much money. I'm, I'm totally fascinated by this. It is, it is the first, I think it's really the first legit horror series out of the, the 80, I mean, you have, like, the Insidious films, you have the Purge movies, which are like, kind of, kind of horror, I mean, Insidious obviously is horror, but. Yeah. I don't know. But this feels like the first real, like, original horror series that also, like, gets into our fascination with expanded universes, and, you know.
JVL00:22:06The people at DC, in the Warner Brothers unit, must watch the box office returns for The I just want to gouge their eyes out. Especially vis-a-vis budget.
Sonny00:22:16But, no, but, yeah, that's, like, they make a lot of money because they don't cost very much to make. I mean, they, you know.
JVL00:22:22Is it also. But they've stood up out of nothing. Sure. Expanded universe that reliably produces a movie. Accidentally.
Vic00:22:27Totally accidentally. I just, I just thought not to go off track here, but I just saw a thing in Variety right before we showed up for taping about Henry Cavill is. He's out. They're not sure.
Sonny00:22:36He's out? Henry Cavill out. Out. As Superman. Wow. There you go. That's according to The Hollywood Reporter. If true, that suggests that they're rebooting. They're rebooting everything, but they can't reboot everything because they've got Wonder Woman, which is successful.
Vic00:22:48You know who should play Superman is, um, is Ben Affleck. He'd be great.
Sonny00:22:53Matt Damon. They can save Matt Damon. They should have Matt Damon be Superman and then it would be Matt and Ben. Yeah, there you go. The problem is they can't make Superman go away by killing him already because they did that. They already did that. Well, they need to have, they need to have a crisis on infinite earths where only Wonder Woman and the Flash survive. Right? That'll get them through. Is that, isn't that basically what we need?
Vic00:23:17They also need somebody to control the creatures of the sea. Somebody who has that power. No. Nobody needs that. Okay. Now, we're not here to talk about the nun. Uh, we're here to talk about, uh, Peppermint and Jennifer Garner. Uh, so if we could, uh, Sonny, you saw Peppermint. He's the only one who saw Peppermint.
Sonny00:23:34I'm the only one who saw Peppermint.
Vic00:23:35I got, I got the feeling that even if I, I could pretend to have seen it and, uh, it would be fun because I get a sense of what this is about just from the trailer and I, of course, I read your review in The Beacon. Of course. Uh, but how about a, uh, review?
Sonny00:23:48Peppermint stars Jennifer Garner as a mother whose family is killed in front of her at a, an amusement park.
Vic00:23:56Ugh. That's terrible.
Sonny00:23:59After the family is killed, she engages in a, uh, series of revenge-style acts against the people who perpetrated it. Shoots a lot of them. Killed. I don't know if you guys are familiar with this story, but it's called The Punisher. It's called The Punisher. And, uh, this is basically Lady Punisher, and it's fine. It's, I, I enjoyed it, uh, a great deal. It's short. It's a hundred minutes long. Um, and it's very straightforward. It's by the guy who directed Taken. So it is, you... Luc Besson. No. French, other guys. Luc Besson produced it, and I think wrote the story. Pierre Morel is the, the director of Peppermint and Taken. Um, I don't have a ton to say. Uh, about this movie, because it is, it just is what it is. It is a straightforward action, uh, action revenge movie, where the wronged parent rights the wrongs by killing a lot of people. It is terribly cathartic, and therefore very enjoyable. Uh, I am a big fan of Jennifer Garner, who I think, uh, if you look at Jennifer Garner's career, it's very interesting. She has kind of, the first half of her career is basically a straightforward action star. She is in the, uh, Alias show. She is... Um, uh, Elektra in the Daredevil movie, and then she has the standalone Elektra movie, which was not very good, but she was fine in it. Uh, and The Kingdom, where she plays an FBI agent who is, who, who has to go to Saudi Arabia and, you know, find terrorists. Um, and then, abruptly, I mean, just, like, totally chop, she switches into, like, mom roles, where she's playing, she's playing, you know, pregnant girlfriend. She's playing, like, mom's a sick, she's got sick kids. She's, she's playing, you know, basically, like, the kind of, you know, homemaker type role. Um, and sort of Christian-ish movies, too. And, and she's doing some, some Christian films and some, uh, you know, kind of, like, feel-good family there. It is, it's very, very strange, and this movie is, like, almost a confluence of both of those halves of her career, uh, kind of coming together at the same point. And it's very funny, you can actually track, uh, you can, you can almost track her career by the hairstyles in this movie, so at the beginning of the film, she has this kind of long, matronly hair, where she's, you know, she's just everybody's mom, and then she, uh, is wounded in the attack, and when she wakes up, she's got this, like, very short, cropped hair, and she's crazy.
JVL00:26:25She's like, oh, they killed my kids, you're the judges, I'm gonna get you, because you're
Sonny00:26:29letting them all go, and she's, like, legit crazy, like, she has crazy hair. But then she, when she reappears in the, in the, uh, the modern times, you know, uh, she's got this, she's got this, like, kind of shoulder-length badass hair, and that's the preferred hair like atomic blondish kind of she's got she's got the kind of it's just it's this is uh this is
JVL00:26:49this is the preferred jennifer garner look question yes could this movie have been alternately titled the soccer mom with the dragon tattoo oh that's good no it's not quite like well i mean the girl
Sonny00:27:01with the dragon tattoo uh movies are all like weirdly goth and about like this is this is more
JVL00:27:13this is john wick or taken or punisher i mean this is different yes what is peppermint is that her superhero name no good question this seems like a very it's a bad name bad title bad title
Vic00:27:25it should just be called i have a guess but go ahead it should be called like mom mom murder
Sonny00:27:31the mom murders or something i don't know but mama's gonna get you mama gonna mama's back sucker
Vic00:27:37mom's back mama's gonna get you sucker come on victorino that's for you yeah because you're a
Sonny00:27:43peppermint is the flavor of ice cream that the little girl is eating when she is gunned down by the ms-13 style gang it's stuck it's not actually ms-13 it's they should just savages
Vic00:27:55so what you're saying is they should like uh air the uh they should uh debut the movie at the white
Sonny00:27:59house where they should have a special screening it's funny there was there was some talk about how this was going to be you know like a horribly racist movie where you know the the white mom guns down all the hispanic but that's not actually like the first half of the murders uh are all against uh white people judges and cops and other various corrupt like kind of it is it oh you mean her murders no no she she has like she's not just going around randomly killing people okay but uh yeah so anyway it's i i enjoyed it i thought it was fine i am i am a total sucker for
Vic00:28:31jennifer garner so am i you know what i love her and i especially love her in those capital one commercials but you know she could sell she can do anything you can do any commercials you can sell electric toothbrushes and i'd love her speaking

Vic00:30:19microphones here but your voice sounds much more mellifluous when you're reading this ad or maybe
JVL00:30:23it's just that over time no my my voice is way i'm i'm like three registers down oh yeah because we had a playoff baseball over the weekend three consecutive playoff games and we were screaming
Vic00:30:34our full heads off okay well that's good but that's good for the it's good for the show it's about uh peppermint if you don't mind um wants to know what it's rated what are it's a hard right
JVL00:30:48for violence for violence nothing else there's no other skip pass skip sorry it's it's not it's
Vic00:30:55not like you know you tune on hbo and you're like when you're a kid like oh what's this movie and then you see like if you see bn briefly maybe it's worth sticking around for right bn and that's desperate and that's right well you know welcome to my welcome to my life okay by age 15 you got more and no no you need n and maybe the sc i'm talking about like last week i'm talking about last week and then and yeah and okay well this is okay this is n okay and then oh yeah sc oh i'm
Sonny00:31:22sitting down for this one was there was there an sc and an ssc was there a sexual content and a
Vic00:31:28strong sexual no no that's too crazy no too crazy just sc just sc that's that's enough for me just enough for me sometimes it would be sc and also gv like graphic i don't know if i could if i could get through it you know as long as there's also graphic nudity
Sonny00:31:41oh there was graphic nudity which was always like was like cock and balls that's like basically if you saw if you saw us if you saw somebody if you saw a man's junk oh that's g that's graphic
Vic00:31:53that's graphic that's discrimination boobs boobs and butts just that's just nudity that's that's sexist that's sexist okay uh uh in in peppermint do you find like in taken are there creative deaths do you find it satisfying because i mean i've seen how much throat i mean i've seen hostile and you know like innocent people being tortured you feel rotten at the end but you know when when people who you want to see die and they die painful deaths you find that satisfying
Sonny00:32:19vick would have been a very good roman citizen it's it's more of a it i would say it's more uh like choreographed deaths so lots of running around and shooting and that sort of thing
JVL00:32:31because again more more like john wick okay is it gun fu no it's just shooting just just
Sonny00:32:38more like the equalizer or something more generic yeah well no but even the equalizer had like is it well made these are all good well enough made it's okay it's not like okay this is a great show yeah it's well enough made it's i i don't think pierre morel does this weird thing where he like fuzzes out the image and like starts it up again and like it it's this weird like a juddery film effect that is meant to signify the breaks between locations i'm just like don't do that you don't need to do that this is let's just go just cut just cut like a normal person okay that's my that's my main complaint about pierre morel style with these kind of movies
Vic00:33:16are we all is the are we all judging them against taken is that how this is working because i can
Sonny00:33:21redefine that john wick i think john wick has replaced taken as the like wow uh high concept go-to okay it doesn't really get much more high concept than john wick like guy gets his dog killed right kills a bunch that's it yeah and john wick too then john wick too is right okay all right
JVL00:33:40yeah but john wick had a whole you know i mean i i don't know that i see john wick as a generic action movie what's what's so great about it is that it's not generic like it there's more at every stage there's more thought than there needs to be i didn't say generic i said high concept
Vic00:33:53okay fair but what i loved about taken not not besides the auction scene what i liked about taken just kidding that's terrible do they have those in real life what is happening i better
Sonny00:34:07google this where do i buy teen girls
Vic00:34:10you know and i better turn on arlington i better turn on the private browser that way nobody will
Sonny00:34:17be able to track me i just gonna put my vpn on just turn my vpn off vpn put it on private i
Vic00:34:24remember thinking to myself how much was she bid for a hundred thousand i said yeah i think maybe i can scrounge enough i could scrounge enough money in loans i think i could get this i think i could do this this would work out no what i liked about taken was the creativity it's surprising because i never really thought of at that time liam neeson obviously who was already old as sort of being able to do action other than he was rob roy he's a giant man um but i love the creativity the guy who gets electrocuted in the light switch okay you like the torture yeah of people that you want to see right you know so like i've seen hostile and you feel rotten but you know but in here it's like oh this guy's really we're all sluts yeah yeah sluts and part two don't even get me started on hostile party so my point is that's what i loved about taken and um if peppermint has that then then then you feel video but you know it's like how much do you have to suffer through for all the innocent people be i mean her family gets killed
Sonny00:35:14and then you finally get into there's only there's there's just uh there's just the two killings like the movie opens with like a the movie it's it's weirdly it's weirdly structured like with this kind of like pseudo flashback thing that doesn't isn't quite necessary and it has a um it has a subplot with corrupt cops it's like oh who are the corrupt cops and like i don't actually care yeah who the corrupt cops are i just wanted to see the bad guys get murdered right it's
Vic00:35:40literally i mean i mean look and i also saw death wish with bruce willis i feel like it's the same thing yeah so basically it is okay do you have a favorite uh jennifer garner movie the kingdom the king yes in the crew where she she in the crusades is that what happens to her she's in
Sonny00:35:55the kingdom of heaven vick and she's not in that movie oh sorry that was eva green that was eva
Vic00:36:03green yeah sorry sonny i mean jvl yeah are we done now is it 50 minutes tell me it's 50 minutes how
JVL00:36:09we got like okay 30 this is 35 minutes okay well i'm talking about my beach houses washing into the sea you want to do that okay well we're talking about serena williams is there anything else we
Vic00:36:20could actually talk about serena williams let me uh let me look okay why don't we just here's what we'll do here's what we'll do um i thought we might i thought there was a possibility we'd talk about uh favorite actioners favorite action movies and rank them but if we didn't do that i'm
JVL00:36:39to hear your ranking of favorite action and then i have a i have a high concept question about action movies that i'd like to ask you to ask that first and i'll do the ranking last are there any important ways in which the high concept action movie has changed between like 1985 and now like i i think of the generic action of 1985 is something like commando yeah probably there's
Vic00:36:59more thought put i think there's more thought put into the movie why i think there's i think
Sonny00:37:03there's just more style to them now uh so if you if you look at a movie like predator right for instance which we may discuss in more depth next week uh predator is a very good movie but it's also very um and it's a very well framed movie and it's very well shot movie but it is a movie that is like you're kind of moving from shot to shot in a very staid sort of manner and the movies now are more frenetic i think but also more choreographed so i mean for instance with the john wick movies you have this kind of idea that you are moving from kill to kill to kill to kill to kill uh in one fluid motion as opposed to a movie like predator where there are a bunch of kills say on the assault uh on the like uh what is it the contra base or whatever that is um uh is it south america or is it it's like central america it's the central america somewhere in central america yeah so anyway you have like the assault on the contra base where there is a bunch of stuff that's set into motion at the same time but you're going from like shot to shot to shot cut right cut from one person to another person to another person um and uh so i i think the the style now is a little bit more fluid and a little more um uh well like i said frenetic there's more cuts you get you get it's choppy stuff was entirely dependent upon the movie star yeah right i mean you couldn't make a high concept
JVL00:38:26action movie without one of the established high concept action stars and that's no longer true
Sonny00:38:31well i i think that is i think that is no longer true i mean the the best of these uh here's what i think is not true now um i think that the the there's no there's no transference of action stardom so like liam neeson made taken and taken two is fine and taken three is bad but like he's good in those taken movies but every taken knockoff that has starred liam neeson has not been good because liam neeson is not necessarily an action star he's a good actor and he like works within these within these roles fine but there was the train one there was the plane one i mean like he's he's he's done a bunch of these movies i'm not buying um walk amongst the tombstones he's made a bunch of these movies and they don't quite work because liam neeson is not a a arnold schwarzenegger style uh figure um as opposed to in the 80s where those those kind of personalities transferred from movie to movie you expected that
Vic00:39:28and then if that makes star in that right is is there a lead-up to a peppermint 2 sequel
Sonny00:39:33yes really oh if this movie had made you know 80 or 90 million dollars we might have seen a peppermint too but it is it's spearmint
Vic00:39:44victorino so i was thinking about i'm dying to know this is my this is my top five uh wait what's all on yeah from five to one or five to one from five to one okay five to one uh with one parameter which is these are the best 1980s action movies based on the collection of dr victorino mattis vhs cassette tapes oh so here we go uh number five enter the ninja from 1981 uh that starred franco niro franco niro of django unchained and john wick too i think is an american ninja killing uh japanese ninjas because of that it's entirely believable including show kazooie how did i never see this movie let me tell you something you could find it all on youtube
JVL00:40:2512 year old me yes yes shuriken yeah oh of course yeah of course getting right people in the head they were getting it in the head okay no do you remember how hot we were for ninjas around the time of snake guys
Vic00:40:38most of these vhs which most of these movies obviously have ninjas involved because 1980s was about ninjas okay number four was revenge of the ninja it has nothing to do with enter the ninja except for the villain in the first one is now a good guy playing in a different character show kazooie who's trying he has a son he's trying to get his life started and he owns a he owns a store that sells dolls and then it but then he finds a doll breaks and he finds out there's heroin inside the dolls he'd been inadvertently trafficking h and he has to take on the mafia and there's a great hot tub scene okay number three hold on a question you said the villain is are these part of the same universe or just the actor actors same actors but in different roles different roles okay so not the villain i guarantee you this is that's a person playing that's right that's right i guarantee you this is all part of the golan globus universe right golan right that was which was a great documentary on him okay number three is interesting it's action jackson with carl weathers from 1988 the funny thing is this you forget this when he he fights his way to the top and has to take on the crime boss who is a martial arts expert so the the climactic scene is him versus the the big boss who's the big boss the martial arts expert he fights craig t nelson wow you can see that on youtube by the way and i i'm pretty sure with like the sequences they use a stunt man for every kick and then when they show him again it's craig t nelson unless craig t nelson you had to do roundhouse kicks and i didn't know about that okay so number two is the octagon with chuck norris again white guy defeating ninjas in a ninja camp it was a ninja training camp so that was okay there you go and then number one i'm sorry a ninja training yeah like a ninja terrorist training how did he wind up in the ninja camp i get he wore it maybe he wore a mask no but i mean why was he there was he there to
Sonny00:42:32disrupt the ninja training yes he had the ninjas were the ninjas coming to america
Vic00:42:37yes it was happening in the heartland sonny there was a ninja terrorist training camp in the united states right here question yes
Sonny00:42:46i don't know how to phrase this without getting into a lot of trouble we're how did they hide a bunch of ninjas ninjas in the heartland without anyone noticing one of the top ninjas had a mask
Vic00:43:00on so i don't know okay but you couldn't tell were they white ninjas some and others were asian and there was an opening crime scene where he looked at the crime scene and he immediately knew chuck norris knew that ninjas had caused it because they do yes because they have a whisper in his voice because they have his you know the the voice in his mind goes ninja ninja ninja ninja ninja
JVL00:43:22like the friday the 13th yes yes yes it was chuck norris question ninja ninja i need a sub ranking from you victorino no of ninja weapons oh oh easy from one to three yeah okay fine okay
Vic00:43:36size number three the size you know those mini swords yeah yeah number two nunchucks
JVL00:43:41you go two for the nunchucks and number one would be a number one number one is the shuriken man
Vic00:43:46because you know oh and also uh what about the katana blade also also wait nonsense number four this was the shenanigans number four smokescreen okay wait wait wait you threw the silver balls
Sonny00:43:57on the ground and smoke appeared no smokescreen isn't a weapon that's a deception it's a tool
Vic00:44:03of disguise tri-staff there's a tri-staff there's regular staff the tri-staff the tri-staff yeah somebody has opinions on this okay and now we have to get to my number one okay number one my number one is a movie from 1981 called kill and kill again starring james ryan who plays an actor named steve chase i don't know why they came up with these names i like my sister and i used to watch this james ryan i know i know like that wasn't bad um and and we used to watch it so many times we'd ask my parents could we watch kill and kill again again it was probably rated r and you know what and i said why don't they show this movie why don't they show it on the network and i started wondering it's weird and i wondered i want you know and i realized the south the south african actor ken gampu played a character whose name was gorilla i don't think you could do that anymore okay i'm just pointing out a fact here go to imvb anyway but he was very strong and he actually stopped the helicopter from taking off uh anyway
JVL00:44:57you know what i remember hi jonathan last i'm just sitting over here and contributing nothing to this

JVL00:47:21i want your thoughts on this well no i know i didn't anti serena yes yes no no no no you can't
Vic00:47:28you can't say oh well you know she should be allowed to break her Naomi Osaka i can know that it's really a conundrum on the one hand serena on the other hand the japanese player what am i supposed to do but uh no they it's just you can't excuse that bad and it's not a first time when things don't go her way as we all know then she loses her temper other uh players lose her temper yeah that's an excusable too okay it's bad all across the board but uh once she broke her racket you can't go back from that and you can't say oh i'm not going to penalize you a point it was at a point at that point not a game that was the point that was the point thief was
JVL00:48:00the game the thief line okay so go ahead jvl well i don't know i'm with sonny what are where are you on on all of this are you pro serena anti serena in this
Sonny00:48:09pro official anti-official i am i'm pro official in the sense that he um his calls were all technically correct i probably would have eaten the whistle on the me too on the uh you're a thief line so the final the final final thing i i wouldn't have i wouldn't have penalized her a game i don't think it's i you have to penalize her a point after she smashes the racket right the the you're a thief uh is is the sort of judgment call that i think that a a professional umpire has to kind of is the sort of abuse that a professional umpire has to live with on this sort of thing but but also i think she was i think it was totally fair to penalize her the game because like demanding an apology on the court in front of everyone in a in in such a demeaning way is like is you can't you can't uh emasculate the the official like that you just
Vic00:49:04the game penalty since i didn't see uh the game uh was it a critical game was it an on-serve game a break game or was it like you know four one to five one or what was the situation i forget she
JVL00:49:16was going down i mean she was already she was not like no she was not going to win this was not a uh i i believe that what the tipping point there was was not that you're a thief but the the
Sonny00:49:28professional threat of you're never going to call one of my matches again which is essentially
JVL00:49:34guy's livelihood i mean that is a that that is the the the tennis version of you'll never eat lunch in this town again yeah um which is i think the no-no which is there's a difference between saying you're a jackass you're uh we're cursing them out all that and then making professional threats against somebody's career yeah which is which is the thing i i don't know i'm just anti so i i am weirded out by the way people rushed out to die on this hill and i didn't really quite understand really quick i mean and serena has become in a weird way her own like cause celebrity yeah i mean she's she's just like it is like the saturday night live beyonce joke where everybody has to love serena you can't not love serena and i just understand why it's not permissible to hold two thoughts in your your head at the same time the first is that she is probably the greatest woman's player ever and that she is certainly she is american tennis and has been the face and foundation of american tennis for a decade now all by herself the most important figure in american tennis and that but then also be like yeah but you know like on the other hand like i could take her leave her i mean why why can't you do like it's it's weird in that
Sonny00:50:51you have to love her in addition to recognizing how great she is yeah you're all in yeah you're agreed it's very it's weird and awkward and uh untenable i think i you you you tennis is built on um or at least tennis in the 80s and 90s was built on uh and 70s was built on finding personalities who you liked in addition to nationalities that you liked right i mean this is like it wasn't it wasn't so much like i liked americans so i i like jimmy connor's and i like johnny mack you got to be like i am a connor's guy or i'm a mackinrow guy and i think the the problem here is that you're right serena williams has become the sole face of american tennis there hasn't been an american uh male who's been any good since andy roddick left and even he was pretty marginal i mean really you're looking at like back to agassi um uh so you you you have to say like well she's the american and she's the only one so you have to cheer for her and you have to support her that doesn't quite work with how tennis has been set up in yeah in modern
JVL00:51:57modern wrong with the fandom and i don't know it used to be back before she was the face of american tennis there were plenty of people who were critical of the way she conducted herself um it is only a sort of late in her career that she became this cause and i don't know if i don't think she's changed i think it's the culture around us has changed and become more hectoring
Sonny00:52:17this is all part and parcel of the like how dare you suggest that serena williams is not the best tennis player of all time right right which is insane on its face i mean she is not the best tennis player of all time she's she doesn't maybe do she's maybe the best woman of all time right
JVL00:52:30right right this is the the weirdness of the the fault as having just re-listened to this episode actually by accident over the weekend um where we talked about this the first time oh yes this is the fault of nike espn and twitter it is not the fault of serena williams she is not michelle we style running around there saying i want to play with the men and see if i mean she is totally candid about how she plays in a different sport than men than men do and so i you know again for all my complaints about serena williams there are a whole bunch of things that i like and admire about her aside from her skill and one of which is this and the way in which she has all of her life refused to get dragooned into racial politics she just wants no part of it and god believe me when i tell you that the tennis establishment which is they were social justice warriors before social justice warriors were cool they've been dying to turn the williams sisters into racial victims for their entire lives and the williams sisters have always said no thank you i don't want any part of that i think they're awesome because of that okay great show yeah
Vic00:53:32wow okay well we just killed that good good work good work everybody eating up time uh spirit of

Sonny00:54:28these are from michigan oh there you go let me effort that real quick it was delicious

JVL00:56:16and wide i think but maybe yeah no people came in like fluent from out of town they had a big
Vic00:56:20meetup together i think they want to do more of these and i saw on the uh and twitter notifications they created their own substandard podcast their own substandard expanded universe there is now and and so i wait there's a podcast about our podcast yeah not even about us anymore it's just because they've gotten together they have achieved what they want to achieve we are we have now been rendered completely superfluous wait wait we're done now is this the singularity yes yes this is
JVL00:56:44the substandard singularity where the sscu has become its own thing i'm sure it's fine
