#123. The Substandard on Deadpool 2 and Grilling

Dudes Chatting — grills: Vic just bought a Weber Genesis II E310 for $699. JVL calls him "a stone cold sucker" and delivers an extended case that the Weber Genesis is a luxury-tax item, not a meaningful quality upgrade. Sonny notes his $200 grill works perfectly. The debate spirals into a comparison of plasma vs. LCD TVs (JVL and Sonny still on plasma, resisting 4K), and Propane Taxi (Sonny and JVL both use it; Vic refuses to pay $4 extra to have the tank hooked up).

Reviews: Vic gives Gene's character a Twitter-poll send-off — listeners voted that Gene should review Deadpool 2, which JVL performs. In his "Fanboy JVL" voice, he praises the film as the best superhero movie ever because Deadpool "breaks the panel" and the post-credits scene kills the Green Lantern movie version of the character. In their own voices: Vic found it genuinely funny and had low expectations; JVL argues you can only subvert genre expectations once, and Deadpool 2 simply repeats what the first film did — freshness was its only asset and you can't be fresh twice (he compares it to the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels); Sonny agrees on the diminishing-returns problem but found the X-Force airplane sequence — in which the entire team dies instantly — wonderfully unexpected. All three praise Zazie Beetz as Domino, the film's best performance. JVL adds that this may be the last major superhero movie designed primarily for domestic rather than international audiences.

Box Office: Deadpool 2 explodes to #1 with $125M (second-highest R-rated debut ever); Avengers: Infinity War holds at #2 with $28.6M (now approaching $600M domestic); Book Club opens at #3 with $12.5M — notable because Craig T. Nelson now has two movies in wide release simultaneously (Book Club and the upcoming Incredibles 2).

Sonny opens with his daughter's reaction to the Cave of Wonders scene in Aladdin — she grabbed his arm and said "I love you, Daddy" — and the gang discusses the Guy Ritchie Aladdin remake in pre-production. The Corrections segment covers: a listener clarification that Allison Mack was officially Lois Lane in Smallville after season 5; a correction from listener Andrew Bettman that Andy Garcia plays Sonny's illegitimate son (not Michael's) in Godfather III. Vic closes by announcing he will miss next week's episode — he is traveling to the Vatican and staying at the Casa Santa Marta — and teases a surprise guest host.

Vic00:00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of The Substandard, sponsored by Casper Mattress and the Black Tux. I'm Victor Matus along with Sonny Bunch and Jonathan V. Last. I'd like to remind you, The Substandard is available on iTunes, Google Play, and Stitcher. Just look at our podcasts and search for Substandard. You'll easily find us. Please subscribe. Tell your friends. Leave a review. Gentlemen, how are we? Please leave a review of this episode. Not the micro.
Sonny00:00:48Not the micro episode that we released yesterday, because my God, that was an event. High concept.
Vic00:00:57I had a list, and we went through it so quickly. And I even was going to talk about Pour Some Sugar. You beat me to it, Sonny. And that was it. I was done. That's all I had for you. JVL, how are you doing? I'm fine. How are you, Vic? How was your weekend? I'm fine, too. But let's turn to Sonny first, because otherwise- I'm sorry. Did I mess up your transition? I'm not sure. I'm not sure how to transition. I have no idea what Sonny's going to say.
JVL00:01:18Sonny, how was your weekend? Please.
Sonny00:01:20My weekend was pretty good. We watched Aladdin for the first time as a family this weekend. Oh, it's a whole new world.
JVL00:01:25It's a whole new world. The genie is so funny and unpredictable. He'll say anything.
Sonny00:01:30He's wacky. He's wacky and goofy. I would say what was most interesting to me about watching this movie was imagining it through the lens of Guy Ritchie. Everything that happens in that movie, from the opening song, which has lines like, it's barbaric, but hey, it's home. I was just thinking, there's no way that this movie made by Guy Ritchie will be problematic in any way whatsoever. It's going to be amazing. And it really is kind of a perfect Guy Ritchie. It's a Guy Ritchie movie, too, because it's about a chav who wants to be royalty, and he's a low-level criminal. He does lots of parkour and stuff. It is actually kind of a perfect movie. And in the opening chase through the streets and the markets, he's crashing into harems. Shot for shot, I could just envision it as a Guy Ritchie movie. But again, it's going to be the fights over this movie. Running in place, running and running. It's going to be really good, as opposed to King Chav Arthur, which was terrible. Has casting begun for this already? Yeah, it's like a bunch of people I don't know.
Vic00:02:41Including the genie we don't know. It should be a big role. That should be a big role.
Sonny00:02:44I don't know. Gilbert Gottfried. Well, he plays the parrot. Ah, very good. He gets a promotion. Is Gilbert Gottfried allowed to work anymore? Remember, he got in trouble during the tsunami The Japanese tsunami. He made Tsunami Josh Schumer play the genie. Yeah, that's fine. She's America's most important comedian. If Amy Schumer is not the genie, I am frankly going to be shocked and appalled, because she is America's comedy sweetheart right now. And she's so funny, and her voice is so amusing, and her impressions are also good. So I'm going to tell you this right now.
JVL00:03:19She does nudity. We know that. I'm going to tell you this right now, and once I say it, it will become so obvious that you will not be able to think of anything else. Okay. It should be Dave Chappelle. No, that's perfect. That would actually be perfect. Dave Chappelle would be amazing.
Sonny00:03:33Dave Chappelle would be fantastic. Wouldn't be caught dead in this movie, but it would be amazing. No, I was going to go with... You drive a dump truck full of money up to Dave Chappelle's house, and you're like, here's five million bucks, come do...
JVL00:03:43No, I think that's not true anymore.
Sonny00:03:44That's why he left the show on Comedy Central. Come do two weeks of...
JVL00:03:45He didn't care about money anymore.
Sonny00:03:47Everybody cares about money. You know who I'd like to say played the genie? Everyone wants to work with Guy Ritchie. Guy Ritchie is A number one in the world of...
JVL00:03:53Dave DeVito had a great line. A line some characters said, of course everybody wants money. That's why they call it money. Was it other people's money? I don't know. It might have been taxi, for all I know. Shaquille O'Neal, I think he should play the genie.
Vic00:04:10Shaquille O'Neal, he should definitely be... With like a vest, but... What about Shazam? Shazam, that's what I'm saying. Reprising his role in that other movie. That's what I'm saying. He could wear a little vest and show off his bod.
JVL00:04:19Not Shazam, Sinbad. Do you mean Shazam? Sinbad could play... No, I mean Sinbad. Sinbad could play genie. You guys have all read that, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. The fake... The fake movie. The cultural memory.
Sonny00:04:29I just assume everybody remember... I mean, I assume everybody's getting Shazam confused with Sinbad, like mashing him up. But Sinbad always kind of looked like a genie, anyway, with his dumb pants and his... Yeah, well, the parachute-ish... And his earring.
Vic00:04:42Parachute-ish pants, earrings. You know, but he was... And a vest. Family comedy. He was... You know who told me this? Family comedy and who loved, who loved Sinbad? No, he's so close. Very close. Fred Barnes. Fred Barnes.
Sonny00:04:56Fred Barnes loves Sinbad. Fred Barnes. European cinema and Sinbad.
Vic00:05:00Yes, that's right.
JVL00:05:01Just a man... 400 blows and that Secret Service movie. A man of multitudes. He contains multitudes. He literally is the only person in the world who can, like, sit and talk to you about Truffaut and then say, boy, Sinbad's really funny. That's Sinbad. That's some good stuff. I bet Sinbad's huge in France. The treadmill. The treadmill.
Sonny00:05:18I bet Sinbad is actually, like, a big hit with the Jerry Lewis-ish people. Yeah, could be. Could be. So, anyway, my weekend was watching Sinbad. I was watching Aladdin for the first time.
Vic00:05:28How did your daughter like it? It was very funny. Versus Frozen.
Sonny00:05:32I mean, it's very funny. So, like, you know the kind of opening bit where Jafar first goes to the Cave of Wonders and the, like, Sphinx cat rises up out of the sand and he's got this deep, scary voice. He's like, ooh, disturbs my slumber. When that happened, she grabbed my arm and, like, turned to me and said, I love you, Daddy. And I was like, oh, that's very adorable. All you have to do is scare the crap out of her and then she loves you. Why are you so scared right now? It's just a big cat. She's like, I love you.
JVL00:06:02It was very funny. That's adorable.
Sonny00:06:05It was one of the most adorable things that has ever happened.
Vic00:06:08Fear you will find to be more and more useful as they get older in order to get their affection is fear. Fear.
Sonny00:06:15Scary stuff.
Vic00:06:16I do a thing. When Kate is away, I do a thing where I become, like, a crazy person.
JVL00:06:19I say, Mommy's not here anymore to protect you. And then they all get crazy.
Vic00:06:24Yeah, and it works, you know. And then I swing a belt around and I protect her. I tend to hit them, but, you know, I miss on purpose. Pretend. And then, please, Daddy, don't do it, you know. But, no, they'll do a thing. I'm kidding.
Sonny00:06:34Kate comes home and they're all in the basement. They're all in the basement.
Vic00:06:36They're emaciated and white. Michael thinks this is great. Well, he'll do a thing where he'll take some strange gemstone.
JVL00:06:42You're sending great patterns of behavior for Sabrina to follow later in life. Father figures who want to beat her. Father figures who want to beat her.
Vic00:06:48No, and I have a, they do a, Michael does a, we do a shtick where, it's all improv. It's great for your improv chops. And one of the things was where Michael. Michael will take. It's like the Groundlings at the Mattis household. It is, like the Groundlings. And one of the things we created was a character. The Groundlings by way of Eli Roth. A little bit. A little bit of Eli. And a little bit of Lars, Lars von Trier. No, and like Michael will put this like gemstone to my forehead and I pretend that I get transformed into this like zombie when it happens. Oh, sorry. It's vision-like. It's vision-like with the thing. And then when it falls off, I say, I don't remember. How did I get here? You know, and then I chase them around when it's. It's on and, you know, scares them. And they beg. And that's nice. It's nice to have my, you know, daughter still, you know, miss me in these moments. So. Touching. Okay. Nick, how was your weekend? Only half of that was real. My weekend was nice and quiet for once, but I was going to say. All of your weekends are quiet. No, no, no. The weekend before that was like.
JVL00:07:49Oh, my kids were up in New Jersey with the grandparents. Oh, we were. Kate and I were in New York.
Vic00:07:54No, we had. We had all families and cousins over. The weekend before for communion, that was a busy weekend, et cetera. But. You only have to do that once, right? Once. Twice. Take your communion and you're done. The other one, Michael, a couple years ago. But we got, I got finally, a new grill. Oh. What'd you get? The Weber Genesis, as recommended by several people. You are paid way too much. If you could afford a Weber Genesis. Weber Genesis.
Sonny00:08:20How much does it cost, JBL?
Vic00:08:22Oh, my God. Oh, go ahead. Guess how much it costs. We'll play. This is like. Oh, the price is right. Base model on this.
Sonny00:08:31Wait, can I get in with a guess before you say? Because you probably actually know. See who gets closer. I'll say $1,400.
JVL00:08:38No, the base model on this is $700.
Vic00:08:42The actual retail price of the Genesis II E310, $699. You win a dollar over that.
JVL00:08:51He went over. You went over. You're a sucker.
Vic00:08:55Really?
JVL00:08:55You are a. You are a stone cold sucker.
Vic00:08:59Really?
JVL00:09:00Yeah.
Vic00:09:00Everybody loves it.
Sonny00:09:02Is it a gas grill or a charcoal grill?
Vic00:09:03Gas. It's a gas grill. Both Fireman, Captain Glenn. For the record. For the record. Captain Glenn, who is a serious griller, said get the Weber Genesis, and Mike Goldfarb said get the Weber Genesis.
Sonny00:09:15I'm going with them. Is this the one with the panels that reflects the heat? No. This is the one into the meat.
Vic00:09:21No, no, no. The flavorizer.
JVL00:09:22Twice what the number two grill on the market costs. You could literally. You could literally buy two of them. And so what you are doing is you are making a bet that the laws of chemistry and oxidation simply don't apply to the metal used in the Weber Genesis. Does it use fancier metal? Why is it so much more expensive? Because at the top. It's adamantium. Because at the top of the category, you can just charge luxury tax, basically. This is, you know, it becomes, it's like any luxury good, it becomes more sought after because it's more expensive. If it was a $400 grill, nobody would care. Yeah. I can't believe you did that. I had to get, honestly. Of course the doctor's kid has the Weber Genesis.
Sonny00:10:01I bought a $200 grill three years ago, and it works perfectly fine. It cooks my meat perfectly. It's fantastic.
Vic00:10:06My charbroil lasted 10 years, and then it died, and that was an expensive one, but that was
JVL00:10:10And so if you could have bought another charbroil and gotten another 10 years out of it, then you would have gotten 20 years of great grilling for the price of one Weber Genesis.
Vic00:10:19But that's like, you know.
JVL00:10:21Your Weber Genesis is not going to last you 20 years. It will last you 10 years the same as the charbroil.
Vic00:10:26That's fine. I make, what, was that $700? I make that in an hour. That's fine. Where I work. Under that table. Yikes! Wow. Wow. That is, wow. 11. That was, wow. That was a lot of attention there. Anyway, I looked into it. I read CNET. I looked at the comparisons. Lots of people love it. Of course everybody loves it.
JVL00:10:51It's the best.
Vic00:10:52It's also overpriced for the value. It's a value proposition. Lowe's was not going to deliver. Or assemble if it was below. So I said, I need to get something that's more expensive. Like over, it had to be over $400.
Sonny00:11:03Once again, I bought my grill. I think I paid $40 for the assembly and delivery or something like that.
JVL00:11:09You didn't assemble your own grill? No.
Sonny00:11:11Who assembles their own? We had this fight before.
Vic00:11:13We had this discussion.
JVL00:11:13I don't have time.
Vic00:11:14I don't have time.
Sonny00:11:15You know what? You know what? You know what civilized people do? They pay other people money to put their crap together for them. I mean, come on.
JVL00:11:22I have better things to do. I assembled my last grill. Like mowing your lawn?
Vic00:11:26I assembled my last grill.
JVL00:11:28$7,000 for a grill. So it's once every 10 years. Waste of time. Have somebody else do it. Yeah, but you amortize those two hours over the course of a decade, and it's like seconds
Vic00:11:36Isn't it worth $40? No, it's not worth $40? I would-
JVL00:11:39But you didn't pay $40. You paid an extra $300 to get the Genesis.
Sonny00:11:44I would have paid $100 easily. Easily. Would you have paid $300?
Vic00:11:50Probably not. Probably not. Boom.
JVL00:11:53Roasted.
Vic00:11:54Whereas my flat screen TV. I spent $200 on. So, you know, I really go for the best.
Sonny00:12:00What kind of TV did you get for $200? No, just kidding. It was $400. One with HDMIs. It was $400. Did you get it out of the back of a car?
Vic00:12:07It was $400. It was $400. So you see our priorities. Our priorities. How much did you spend on your TV?
Sonny00:12:12Is it a CRT? Is it a Cathrowood Ray Tube TV?
Vic00:12:15I don't think so. Yeah, rear projection.
JVL00:12:17I haven't bought a television in 11 or 12 years.
Sonny00:12:22How much do you spend on watches? How about that? Do you have a plasma still? I do. I have two plasmas. I have one upstairs and one downstairs. And a friend was trying to talk me into getting one of the 4K UHD TVs.
JVL00:12:35And I was just like, no, my plasmas are still pretty great. Pretty dark blacks. Pretty great. The blacks are inky. Vibrant covers. Inky, inky, inky.
Sonny00:12:45I cannot pull the trigger on a new UHD TV plus a new UHD-capable Blu-ray player plus upgrading all of my Blu-rays. I just, I like, I cannot, I cannot do it again. I did it with DVD to Blu-ray. I just, I can't do it again. I just refuse. Is this unreasonable? Am I being an unreasonable person?
JVL00:13:07No, but what I'm, so I'm not lusting after the UHD. What I'm lusting after is extra screen real estate. Because the price has come down on it that you could now get for like $600, 70 or 72 inches worth of screen. And I have a 42 inch because it was 12 years ago. And I don't, if I could trade. If I could trade this for like, you know, I drop in some cash and I get a 72 inch plasma that is still just normal. You can't get a plasma anymore. No, I know, but I'm saying this is, if that was an option, I would do it today. Yeah. But because I have to go down to LCD. Yeah. I resist it. LCD is trash.
Sonny00:13:42I see, I see, I see LCD screens and I'm just like. Capitalism doesn't work. And I'm just like, this is crap. This is, this picture is crap. And you're all monsters for driving plasma out of business.
JVL00:13:53It is synecdoche for capitalism itself. You sit with that pop. I got an LCD.
Vic00:14:01See what, see what I mean?
Sonny00:14:02From 2006, it still works. Ugh. A Samsung. See what I'm talking about? No, but I, I, I, I have my, I have my 40 inch.
JVL00:14:10Why is that Rodney Dangerfield voice? I don't know.
Sonny00:14:13I got my 40 inch plasma, my 60 inch plasma, I'm done buying TVs for the next 10 years. Like until one of those breaks and we have to get the like fully immersive 3D rigs.
JVL00:14:23But Sonny, Sonny, the energy can. Assumption on the plasmas is so much higher than LCDs, what about the planet?
Sonny00:14:30But this is, this is my favorite thing about the plasma is that it's bad for the environment. I, I turn it, I often. You purposely got the plasma. I often, I often just turn it on and like. Leave the room. And, and just have it broadcasting sports for hours on end because I can and because I know that it's bad for the, for the environment.
Vic00:14:48You know what I'm not getting for the grill is the iGrill. That was one of their big selling points. What's the iGrill? It's like a Bluetooth on the grill. Connect the meat thermometer.
Sonny00:14:58I got a meat thermometer.
Vic00:15:00Meat thermometer for, and it tells you on your phone.
Sonny00:15:03You couldn't bring this up on the mini?
Vic00:15:04It had nothing to do with 80s lyrics. And it's supposed to, you know, I mean, I don't need the phone to tell me. I just stick it in there and know what the temperature is. But that's one of their big things. I'm not doing that iGrill thing. Can I? Which is their big thing. Go ahead.
JVL00:15:18Can I? Please. And I, I offer this not as criticism, but as legitimate advice. Oh, a little too late for that. Legitimate advice. What you should invest the money in is a pretty heavy duty cover for the grill. I got a cover already. Is it like pretty, pretty thick? Yeah. Okay.
Vic00:15:35Yeah, that's fine.
JVL00:15:36Because now that you've spent the $700 on the Genesis, you'd like to get it for, last it for 12 years as opposed to 10.
Vic00:15:42I don't have a cover, like a patio cover, so yeah, what?
JVL00:15:47The next time you buy a grill, you will not have children living in the house with you.
Vic00:15:52Our friend. What? Did I just blow your mind? No, this is true. Our friend. Our friend, our, my former colleague, your colleague, Richard Starr, one of his observations was stereos. You buy one maybe in college. You buy another one as a young adult. You buy another one for another, and that's it until retirement. That's it.
JVL00:16:09Yeah. That's it. Unless you're Norman Podhoretz. Right. Remember, I believe Norman Podhoretz is a huge hi-fi guy. He's a hi-fi guy.
Sonny00:16:14Everyone has their thing. But nobody, nobody buys a stereo anymore. Who would buy a stereo anymore? You buy like little docks for your iPads, or you buy a, you buy a sound bar.
Vic00:16:23You're not, you're not of the belief that the vinyl coming back thing, people, you don't have, people big on vinyl. You know what I'm talking about. Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
JVL00:16:29You can now connect vinyl, like a turntable, to your Sonos.
Vic00:16:36Stereo. Okay. So the only thing that I'm waiting for now for the grill, and I'll let you know how it works out, is the propane tank. So I've got to get a new propane tank. Propane taxi? Do you use propane taxi? Yeah, well, I get, I get propane. And what I was going to say, I think you were the one who recommended it. Great. Propane taxi.
Sonny00:16:50Once again, totally worth the convenience. You just, you pay an extra two bucks. I am not going to Home Depot. I have them coming tomorrow.
JVL00:16:56I have them coming tomorrow to drop off a new propane. I am paying $16 for somebody else to take the old propane tank from my driveway and put a new propane tank in my driveway. We should. $16 total. That's right. We should. You're not paying them to hook it up, too? Why would I pay them to hook it up?
Sonny00:17:12It's four bucks to hook it up. Four bucks. Saves me the hassle of having to hook it up. I'm paying $20, and they're taking. You understand that. I'm paying $20, and they're taking. Are you also propane taxi? Yeah, yeah, yeah. All three? They should be an advertiser, really. Let's be honest here, propane taxi. They're unhooking the old propane tank and hooking in the new one. Have you ever hooked and unhooked a propane tank? Do you understand how to do it? You know what? No idea how to do it.
Vic00:17:34Sonny makes four bucks in an hour.
Sonny00:17:35Have you ever taken a- He makes $700 in an hour. I make four bucks. I got to start doing what he's doing.
JVL00:17:40Have you ever taken a hose and screwed a nozzle onto the end of the hose to be able to water your garden or something? No idea.
Sonny00:17:48Because it's about that hard. No.
JVL00:17:51Fair enough.
Vic00:17:51My only fear is because, you know, again, so they assemble it at Lowe's, which is better because, you know- You know, at Home Depot, by the way, they give you this- The choice is, well, drop off the box, but you have to put it together yourself, or we'll assemble it, but you have to pick it up, and it's not going to fit in any car. It's a Sophie's choice. Yes, it is, and you need a truck, and you'll have to rent this truck, but we're not giving you, according to our friends Aaron McClain and John McCormick who had to do this, we're not helping you lift it onto the truck, and certainly we have no robes, harnesses, belts, anything. You're all on your own on that, and so- I wonder.
JVL00:18:22Do you think Captain Bill would have trouble lifting a grill up onto a truck and off the truck? I seem to think that Captain Bill could do that by himself with one hand. He told me-
Sonny00:18:31This is all- This is so ridiculous. Speak into the microphone. This is so ridiculous. You pay $40, and they assemble it, and they deliver it for you. You guys are idiots. You're all idiots.
Vic00:18:42I'm not assembling it.
Sonny00:18:43All this- I enjoy building things.
JVL00:18:46I like to concentrate the front of my mind on a mundane task, so the back of my mind can find peace. Oh, yeah. Oh, that seems to have worked for you.
Vic00:18:56So, hopefully, it works out when I come back and grill for the first time, and it won't lead to an explosion. Speaking of explosions, over the weekend, Deadpool 2- How was JBL's weekend?
Sonny00:19:06He said it was fine. That's it? That's it? That's all?
Vic00:19:09He had nothing. He had nothing.
?00:19:11All right.
Vic00:19:11For whatever reason. I'm sure you can do the math on this. Over the weekend, Deadpool 2 exploded onto the box office with $125 million, followed by Avengers Infinity War with $28.6 million. So, that's a far cry. However, it's pretty much approached $600 million domestic already. And Book Club, with $12.5 million. Do you know what that means, the significance of Book Club? Can I tell you this? Please. That means that Craig T. Nelson has two big movies coming out this summer.
JVL00:19:41Book Club. Incredibles. Very good. Two. Incredibles 2.
Sonny00:19:45Oh, is he the dad in Incredibles 2? Yeah.
Vic00:19:46He's always been, and keeping busy. And I have always been a fan of Craig T. Nelson since Poltergeist.
Sonny00:19:53Oh, man.
Vic00:19:53He was dead in Poltergeist.
Sonny00:19:55Devil's advocate. Oh. Where he basically plays Trump.
JVL00:19:59Wow. This is true.
Sonny00:20:00Speak that up. Can we discuss Avengers Infinity War's box office for just one second? No, please. We have plenty of time. It's grossed $1.8 billion worldwide, which is about $500 million more than Black Panther. It is going to gross less than Black Panther did domestically by probably $40 to $50 million, I would guess. It is going to gross twice as much as Black Panther overseas. Which I find very interesting. The rest of the world is super racist.
Vic00:20:30Yes.
Sonny00:20:31The rest of the world is super duper racist. Of course. We all know that. Wasn't this the concern with China? Wasn't this the concern with China? America is the least racist country in the world. Yes. We need to, like, everybody ... You know, we're not ... It's actually kind of shocking how many complaints there are about racism in America, but America, least racist country. That's just ...
Vic00:20:51I'd like ... You know what I like? It's an economic and scientific fact. I'd like to know what the numbers are. In Saudi Arabia, as you know, the AMC finally inked a deal with the ... MBS. ... Salman, and to have a ... MBS, as we all call him. Yes. Oh, yeah. Which is most ... Mohammed bin Salman. Oh, yes.
JVL00:21:12Who may or may not be dead. Have you guys followed this? Was he on some sort of mountain climbing expedition or something? So, gunfire was heard at the presidential palace, like, three weeks ago, and nobody has seen him since.
Vic00:21:22You're kidding. I've never heard that story at all.
JVL00:21:24And they released a ... A photo of him, but it's, like, a weird photo, and there's no date on it, and he's got, like, a baseball ... Literally, the only photo that has ever ... It's like Weekend at Bernie's? This is one of those things where I'm sure everything is fine, but out in the world of people who are House of Saud watchers, this is, like, a real panic moment, and they've just ... There's just ... Weekly Standard has an editorial about this this morning. Just arrested a bunch of feminist human rights campaigners in Saudi Arabia. Which is weird, because his whole thing has been human rights, and ...
Vic00:22:01Reformer. Everything about it smells fishy. Cooey. Okay, well, let's ... We want to talk about ... That's not politics, by the way. Foreign policy is not politics. It's fact.
?00:22:12It's fact.
Vic00:22:12These things happen. Okay. Deadpool 2. Do it. Do a read.
JVL00:22:16We all saw it. I have you skedded after the read. Okay, you got sked.
Vic00:22:20Okay. I do. Deadpool 2, we all saw it. How about a review? Any review? Some review? Fanboy JVL saw it. Fanboy JVL saw it. What did ... Do you want a Fanboy JVL review? Oh, sure.
JVL00:22:34Do people like it, or is the Fanboy JVL just Johnny Ivy Part 2? Because John Podhoretz, whose taste I trust, said it was great.
Sonny00:22:42Mm-hmm. People should tweet at JVLast.com, at JVLast, just to let him know if you like it or not.
JVL00:22:50Somebody set up a Twitter poll on this this morning.
Sonny00:22:52I have no strong feelings on this either way, so I'm going to let them know. I'm going to let this one go to the audience. Let them decide. Well, should I not do it? Well, then go for it. Do it. Yeah. You brought it up. Now you have to do it.
JVL00:23:03You do it, and then the listeners can decide. I'm going to pop on. We have a plurality on the Twitter poll that somebody put up, want me to do it.
Vic00:23:13What did you put up that poll? I didn't put it up.
JVL00:23:16One of our listeners put it up. How many votes were there? Should JVLast put it up? How many votes were there? 49 votes.
Sonny00:23:2349 votes.
JVL00:23:24I mean, it was posted like 30 minutes ago.
Sonny00:23:26And what's the total?
JVL00:23:2849 yes, 16 no, 24 saying only Gene should review movies, and 11% saying that only Sonny should review movies. So the only Sonny came in dead last.
Sonny00:23:39That's fine with me. I don't care what these idiots think. This is a profane episode. It's actually not that bad. Frankly, I mean, there was just the talk earlier, and now one F-bomb. So I'm not too worried about it. Okay. There's no write-in writer. Okay.
Vic00:24:00Fanboy JVL. Hello. Don't make sure you don't crumple your cape.
JVL00:24:10Deadpool is the best superhero. I know a lot of people think that the Punisher is cool, but Deadpool is the best, because Deadpool is actually brilliant. The character was created in 1991 by Rob Ball. Deadpool is basically Wolverine, except that he curses, but Deadpool is more awesomer, because he makes jokes and stuff. He's brilliant, because Deadpool talks out of the four walls. This is called breaking the panel, and Deadpool is the only hero in comics who talks about comics in the comics. The French philosopher Michael Foucault said that this is the... Okay. The movie... Deadpool was the best superhero movie ever, because it was rated R, and the AMC, by me, doesn't really card, so you could... And if you looked really close, you could see the girl from Fireflies and her... Okay. It was the best superhero movie, because Deadpool kept breaking the panel in the movie, and he was, like, talking to the audience, and it was filled with jokes that you didn't get, but I did, because I like comic books. Well, fam, but Deadpool 2 is even more awesomer, because it has more jokes. And the jokes are about comic books, and you probably didn't get them. Okay, so maybe you got the joke about Thanos, because Josh Brolin plays Cable, and he's also Thanos in The Avengers Infinity War, but I bet you didn't get the joke about Alpha Flight, or the feet, and... Okay, Deadpool 2 is the best, because there's a scene at the end where Deadpool goes back in time, and... He does this stuff that you don't understand, but the real fans do. Like, he kills the version of Deadpool from the Wolverine movie, and then he kills Ryan Reynolds with a Green Lantern, because the Green Lantern is the worst superhero movie ever, and Deadpool 2 makes a joke about that. And that's why Deadpool 2 is the best superhero movie ever. Thank you.
Sonny00:26:22Okay. We'll let the people vote on that. We'll let them... No. No, here's my one critique of fanboy JBL, is that it's not brash enough. I feel like fanboys now are very, they're like, high energy. Like, you know, like the nerd review thing that Red Letter Media does?
JVL00:26:39Those are millennial fanboys. This is OG.
Sonny00:26:41This is like early 90s fanboy, like shuffling in a comic book store. Yeah, this is comic book.
Vic00:26:47Which is like trailer reaction. You ever see those trailer reaction videos? Trailer reaction. But he's also like half film crit Hulk. Oh my gosh. But he's the worst.
Sonny00:26:55No, but... Again, he's like brash.
JVL00:26:56Did you get into a Twitter fight with film crit Hulk once? No.
Sonny00:27:00I feel like you did. I would never get into a fight with him because he's not worth fighting.
JVL00:27:04He isn't on Rotten Tomatoes at all, is he? I don't know. No. I don't know if he is.
Sonny00:27:07I don't know if he is, but I know that he writes 17,000 words about every little single idea that pops into his dumb big head, so, you know.
Vic00:27:17Sonny, did you want to give another sort of... A big boy review? Big boy review. Not really. Okay. JBL.
Sonny00:27:24Fanboy JBL. Pretty much. Pretty much nailed it. I would say that my one real review of this would be that if you like the first one, you'll probably like this one, and if you did not like the first one, you probably won't like this one because they're very... I disagree. They're very, very similar.
Vic00:27:41Hold on. I just wanted to say, by the way, that I actually liked it because my expectations, I think, were pretty low. As you know, on Twitter, I said this is a movie that I was not looking forward to, and I found myself laughing out loud. I actually liked... I liked Cable, even though I didn't know much about him, and it's pretty clear to me that he wasn't going to be a true villain because when you see him in his surroundings, and it looks like family had been killed, and that he's not really a villain. He's just going to war. He's like, you know, against his enemy, and he's going to... Let's just say he goes to the mattresses. Speaking of mattresses, JVL.

Vic00:29:37Question for the two of you. In your theaters, although, Sonny, you probably went to a screener, yes? No, I saw it.
Sonny00:29:46I saw it, like, the Thursday night it opened at 9.30.
Vic00:29:50Were there kids, and I mean kids, not like 17-year-olds. I'm talking about kids. Were there kids in your theater?
JVL00:29:57No. You mean, like, 10-year-olds? Because that would be totally appropriate.
Vic00:30:00Perhaps younger. Yes.
JVL00:30:03Did you bring Sabrina? No, no, no, no, no, no. I didn't bring my kids. You didn't just bring Michael, you brought Sabrina, too.
Vic00:30:07I didn't bring any of my kids. No, no, no, no, no. Even I draw the line. The language and references, you know, the sexual references. The Alpha Flight reference was too much for you? I kind of missed that one, because I'm not a fanboy, per se, so I missed Alpha Flight. Do you even know what Alpha Flight is? Isn't that a Canadian X-Men? Canadian, yes. I was going to say that. Isn't that one of them is gay? Isn't one of them gay? Okay.
Sonny00:30:32North Star.
Vic00:30:32There you go. No. So I'm there, and in the front row is a, I assume a dad, with like two or three kids he brought in tow who were at most, I'd say, 10 years old. Probably younger. And I could not believe that he brought them there to this movie. I just couldn't believe it, because what is he thinking? Oh. Superheroes. We all love superheroes. Come on, kids. And I'm watching it. The trailers were inappropriate. There was the trailer. A couple of red band trailers. The Happy Time Murders, and the opening line from The Muppet, and these kids are like, oh, I love Muppets, you know? And then The Muppet says, well, what Sonny Bunch said earlier on the show. That's a little crazy.
JVL00:31:18Why are you judging other parents, Vic?
Sonny00:31:20I don't know why you're surprised by this. People are idiots. I like, this is the number one rule of life is that people are stupid, so why? No, I, so my, I just shook my head. I just, it's like, oh.
JVL00:31:33Deadpool, I tried to re,
Sonny00:31:36I remember quite liking the first one when it was in theaters. Watched it, enjoyed it, had a good time. And then I tried to re-watch it recently, and it just, nothing in it worked for me. It was too shticky and too snarky, and I just, it did, it did not, it did not work the second time around, so I was kind of actually dreading going into Deadpool 2, it all basically works for me. I, again, I don't think I could actually watch this movie again. The whole fourth wall breaking, you know, like, oh, we're in a comic book movie, aren't we clever? We're talking about being in a comic book movie. Thing, I, it works once, and I don't, I don't know that it works again. The one thing I, I do find very interesting about this film is the way it kind of tries to have it both ways with the woke and not woke segments of the community. Like, it is gender neutral references. Yeah, but there, so, like, you know, he, there's a female X-Man who is like, you know, this is why I'm an X-Man and you're not, and he's like, no, no, X-Person. And she, like, kind of rolls her eyes, and it, like, it does this thing where it is trying, the movie is trying to be both, be both, like, kind of hyper-violent and hyper-masculine and also very kind of rude, bro-y humor, but also, like, it's woke because look at how diverse it is, but also, like, making fun of the diversity within the movie itself. Like, the, everything about it is very odd and kind of meta and stacked on top of each other, and I, like, I think it all basically works. I think it all, I mean, there's even a Christopher Plummer joke, because, which is funny, because T.J. Miller, of course, has been accused of multiple sexual assaults and, like, he's been, you know, he is, like, totally wrapped up in the whole Me Too thing. So they're very much trying to have it both ways, and I think, I think it works, but maybe I'm wrong. J.B.O., you seem to really hate this movie.
JVL00:33:32No, I don't think that's right. I did not enjoy it, but that's because, this is important, you can only subvert expectations once. After you do that, the subversion itself becomes the expectation. So if you were seeing, if this is the first Deadpool movie you've seen, then I imagine you came away thinking, wow, I can't believe they did that in a superhero movie. But if this is the second Deadpool movie you've seen, you've already seen everything in it. This is why it's, I would argue the first Deadpool succeeded almost entirely on just freshness. It was something entirely new within the superhero genre. We'd never seen anything like that. And you can't replicate that. Think about the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. You saw the first Pirates of the Caribbean and people were blown away by it because it was just different. It was so different. There was stuff in it that we just never really, not only had we not seen before, we hadn't really ever thought of a pirate like Johnny Depp.
Vic00:34:24Plus my expectations. My expectations for that movie were extremely low because it's based on a theme park ride.
JVL00:34:29But the point is, you can't replicate the surprise you feel. When you come back and it's just more Johnny Depp mincing around, like, well, you've already seen that. What's fresh? What's new? It's why there was no, you couldn't do a sequel to Pulp Fiction. Like Pulp Fiction to a large degree surprises by, it just catches you because everything in it is so surprising and fresh. And I don't think that the original Deadpool has anything else going for it really, aside from that tone and that freshness. And so when you come back and just do that all over again, you don't really have any room. I mean, the successful franchises, successful meaning like the one that we like, like Lethal Weapon, or the Jack Ryan movies, or, I don't know, the Mission Impossible movies, they can meditate on the same theme because they are themes that can bear repeat with different variations. You can't do that when all you've got is something that's new and new. You can't do that when all you've got is something that's new and different because you can only be new and different once.
Vic00:35:28And also, as you alluded to, and as Sonny mentioned, and as Fanboy mentioned, the fourth wall breaking, the more you do it, the diminishing returns build up. Two great movies that have one fourth wall moment, that really works. I think about, the earliest one I think about is like Animal House and John Belushi on the ladder and the girl's getting a dress and he looks at the camera once. That's it. There's no more, they don't do it again. Another favorite of mine, Coming to America. In the end, Eric LaSalle with Soul Glow and he's dripping wet and the younger sister of his ex-girlfriend takes a bit and she goes, oh, you've got to get out of these clothes, you're dripping wet. Here, take off your shirt. And then Eric LaSalle looks into the camera for a split second before they go to the next scene. That works. And in Deadpool, it's just a lot of, okay, it starts off funny and from the get-go, it's breaking the fourth wall. And then they, but there were a couple of other jokes that he used several times, including the joke about lazy writing. He mentions lazy writing twice in Canada.
JVL00:36:34Maybe that's a meta-joke, Vic. See, because it's lazy writing, complaining about lazy writing, that makes it even funnier, Vic.
Vic00:36:40That may be the case. Yeah. But in other ways, I mean, it was a shame that it's about the language and the content because there's obviously, you know, my son would otherwise love the content because he's been on X-Men and he'd be, oh my gosh, Juggernaut's here, you know, and whoever.
JVL00:37:00Colossus, Beast. You know, I would say also there is, in the first one, maybe I wasn't entirely fair to the first Deadpool, there is one drop-dead awesome set piece in that movie and that's the fight they have on the bridge, which is really, really something. There is nothing like that here. I mean, everything else that happens in this, just as movie-making, aside from the, is kind of paint-by-numbers. Yeah.
Sonny00:37:22I totally agree with that. I mean, the whole bit at the, at the beginning where he's kind of like killing all the various, you know, gangs, boring. Just like straight-up boring.
JVL00:37:31You know what? No, no. I will say there is one moment in there that was the only original thing I saw in this, which is the scene in the warehouse where you have a, I think it's Deadpool, a character in the foreground running in slow motion, but everything behind him is taking place in like next to, almost real-time. That's interesting. That was funny. That was a, actually a legit funny play on action movie tropes. But it was the only original thing.
Vic00:37:57But otherwise it reminded you of like Kill Bill, for example. Yeah, yeah. A lot of slicing and dicing.
Sonny00:38:01I thought the movie, I was a little bit bored until we got to the X-Force part, and that actually kind of sparked my interest again. I thought that that whole, that whole segment, the team coming together and then like jumping out of the airplane and everybody dying, was like, I thought that was
Vic00:38:15actually funny.
Sonny00:38:16That was wonderfully unexpected. That was wonderfully unexpected.
JVL00:38:19And like, I mean,
Sonny00:38:20like Shatterstar being turned into goo. He, who, like, I, and I,
JVL00:38:27I'm not 100% sure,
Sonny00:38:29you know, on which level I'm enjoying this because it's like, Shatterstar's a terrible, terrible character and like, it's fun to watch him die horribly and quickly because he's, he's so awful. But I, I don't know. I don't, I thought Domino was great. Yeah. Great is too strong. I thought, I thought it was, I thought she was very, I thought, I like, I thought it was, She was the best thing in the movie. I thought, I thought she, That's different from being great. I thought she was the perfect contrast to Deadpool, with her kind of like, like, quiet, subtle, like, you know, just kind of hanging out to his like, she's a good straight guy.
JVL00:39:03Straight man. Yeah, she's a good straight man and the actress who played her is a stone cold movie star. Yeah. And she's, I don't know, I've never seen her before, I don't think. Well,
Sonny00:39:10she's on, she's on the Donald Glover show, Atlanta. Oh, great. It's like her. She's gonna be a huge movie star.
Vic00:39:16She's great. Do you have thoughts on Eddie Marsan, who plays the hospital director? it was very, it took me,
Sonny00:39:21it took me like, it took me half the movie to figure out who he was. I was like, oh yeah, that's right, that's Michael Mann's guy. He's in, he's in all the Michael Mann movies.
Vic00:39:27And also Atomic Blonde.
Sonny00:39:29Yeah.
Vic00:39:30And, but I was, I was, I wasn't buying, I mean, they were trying to make him into like, he's part evil doctor and then part like, Well, he's just a lazy stock villain. He's a, he's a religious fundamentalist. Lazy stock, religious fundamentalist who is like evangelical.
Sonny00:39:43This is once again, they're trying to have it all ways here. You know, you've got, you've got like the, the jokes about, you know, sexual assault or whatever and all the gay jokes and then also, oh look, here's the religious fundamentalist. He's bad. We got, we have to kill him. kill him. Yes. And it's very funny too because they, I mean, it's like, it's such a, it's such a strange movie because the, you know, the whole last act of the movie is about saving this guy's life and then they kill him basically for kicks just as a joke at the end of the movie. I mean, you know, like.
Vic00:40:11I finally saw, and I said, oh, that's why I'm seeing this guy on the Diet Coke commercials.
JVL00:40:17The,
Vic00:40:18the, the, his friend who drives the cab. Yes. I was like, why, why do I, why am I seeing him on, oh, I see. Okay, he's next. I will say,
JVL00:40:27this may be the last superhero movie we have in a while that was designed for domestic audiences. So this is not built for China or overseas markets. And that's kind of interesting. I mean, they're willing to make all of their money here. There are not a lot of big budget superhero movies that are going to get, going to have that luxury. The first one did pretty well overseas.
Sonny00:40:47Did it? I think so. I'll have to go look. I'll effort that. You guys talk. I,
Vic00:40:50I, I, I, I have to admit, I did laugh at the stingers. Did you, Sonny? The, the post, the mid-credits scene? Yes.
Sonny00:40:57I, I thought it was, once again, this is a, this is a movie, you know, where, this is a weird internecine comic book argument, but there's a trope called fridging women. Fridging, it's called. Where, it's about, it's about, it's about how female characters are often killed in order to give their male, you know, boyfriend, protagonist, superheroes a reason to go on. It comes from, an episode of Green Lantern, which I actually remember buying in stores when it, when it came out, in which Kyle Rayner, then the Green Lantern, his girlfriend, was killed and stuffed in a fridge. Fridging, that's what it's called. And so, in this movie, the Morena Baccarin character gets fridged. She gets killed. She's lovely. She's lovely and delightful. But the, the whole kind of setup for the mid-credits scene is undoing that. So you have both, Yeah, so then what happens? You have both a fridging and then an unfridging. And it is like, it is a total, again, trying to have it always with, with, with this movie.
Vic00:41:55How about soundtrack thoughts? Because you notice it's pretty much all 80s music, so it's pretty much focused or geared towards, I mean, you know, I mean, and I love 80s music, and, but I mean, having sat through Ready Player One and a number, and Atomic Blonde, for that matter, which obviously, because it takes place in the 80s. Guardians of the Galaxy. Yeah, Guardians of the Galaxy, volumes one and two. What?
JVL00:42:17Didn't you guys feel like this movie was cloying? And like, just begging you to love it in ways that I've found.
Vic00:42:24I was definitely begging to love it, but there was parts that I liked. I did. Okay. Okay.
JVL00:42:29The first one did well overseas, not, not, did, did 20% more overseas than it did domestic, which is not the way now most movies are doing, 200% overseas, as opposed to domestic. Not Black Panther. Well, that's only because of racism.
Vic00:42:51Do you have any more Deadpool thoughts before we move on?
JVL00:42:55I mean, obviously we'll have another one of them. Yeah. Deadpool 3. Yeah, because this did, you know, but this is the type of thing, I mean, really, but, well, make money, but lower initial weekend gross, lower opening weekend than the first, which is not something you see very often. Right. A surprise big budget, a surprise big budget movie that does really, really well when a sequel comes out for it. The sequel, no matter how bad the sequel is, it does better. Pirates of the Caribbean movie is a perfect example. Dead Man's Chest did, like, I don't know, like three times what the original Pirates gross was.
Sonny00:43:36Are we, are we hitting a superhero saturation point? I mean, it made $125 million, which is still a ton of money. It's still a ton of money for an R-rated movie. This is the second highest opening weekend for an R-rated movie of all time. I am completely saturated. I'm personally, I can't, I can't do this anymore. But I mean, think about it. It's, this is, this is now the third, I know it's not an MCU movie, but it's the third Marvel movie this year. And, we got another one coming up. And we, and there's Ant-Man and the Wasp coming after this. I mean, there's, we've got Solo next weekend. I know not a comic book movie, but like, I do, I do think that we are kind of hitting a, a wall on these sort of things eventually, right? We have to, we, please God, tell me that audiences are going to get tired. There has to be one at some point. there is.
JVL00:44:20But on the other, on the other hand, the economics of this suggest that there is no way to avoid hitting the wall. The incentives are aligned so that Disney has to make us get to the wall, because they don't want to leave a single dollar on the table by underserving the market. Right? Do you agree?
Sonny00:44:40Basically. Yeah. I mean,
JVL00:44:42there's, so we are, is a.
Sonny00:44:43Eventually we'll have a $300 million Marvel movie that makes, you know, $500 million globally. And then we'll have to, we'll have to. Here's,
JVL00:44:52here's a question. What hits that first, a Marvel movie or a Star Wars movie?
Vic00:44:58That's a close one.
JVL00:44:59Where do we hit the, who hits the exhaust, the cultural exhaustion moment first, Star Wars or Marvel? Although you could say that with DC, we've already done this. We've done it with superhero movies. I mean, Justice League. So if you, so if you, if you call it comic book movies and not Marvel movies, then we've already seen it. Yeah. That there is a level of quality. If you don't meet a, a threshold level of quality, audiences simply will not accept it. Which is, right. And we have not had a Marvel movie that's terrible yet. We've had Marvel movies that you and I don't like. We, Marvel movies that, but aside from like Thor Dark World, everyone brings up Thor Dark World.
Vic00:45:35Aside from Thor Dark World,
JVL00:45:37there hasn't been something that's been like, just really abysmal, has there? No.
Vic00:45:42So. No, even the movies I expect, even the movies I don't want to see, but see like Thor Ragnarok, I actually kind of enjoyed,
JVL00:45:47you know? Yeah, like, you know, Doctor Strange is a third or, a fourth tier Marvel movie, but it's okay. It's competent. Totally mediocre.
Vic00:45:54I like that better than Black Panther. Sorry. What? What? Well, you know what? These movies are really tailored to their audience. Speaking of tailored, the Black Tux is the easy way for guys. That's awesome. That is awesome. They have amazing new selections. If you haven't checked it out, the Black Tux in a while, you've missed out on a lot. They've got a new complete look and suit essentials for all of your upcoming spring events and weddings. The Black Tux makes stepping up your style for a wedding or event easier than ever before, so you can make sure you look as great as your date. I remember getting the Wrigley suit. It fit me perfectly in the best part of the free socks, and plus our former intern at the Beacon Grand Puro wore his for the diplomatic ball, and it fit him to a tee. Whether you're going for a stylist-selected outfit or building a custom look, the Black Tux has tons of new suits and tuxedos to choose from for your big spring events. JVL00:47:41I mean, the read was good, but the transition was amazing.
Vic00:47:44I jumped on that. Unexpected. Those are the ones that you need.
JVL00:47:48Sonny, you are speechless by how good that transition was. What? Yeah, I cut it off because I didn't want to get into that. It was fantastic. I like Benedict Cumberbatch.
Vic00:47:56Okay, corrections, additions. I got a couple. Okay. According to listener Kevin Benversi, there was, in fact, a Lois Lane in Smallville. We talked about this. He says midway.
JVL00:48:08I said this isn't, hold on, stop. All right. I saw Kevin's tweet. It's not a correction because I wasn't wrong. Because I said there are other people who say she isn't really Lois Lane because there was another character called Lois Lane. But then there was a sub. There was a sub subset of Smallville watchers who always insisted that the sex cult girl was the real Lois Lane.
Vic00:48:27But she actually is officially Lois after the fifth season, he said, which everyone stopped watching after the fifth season. And then it was no longer a secret or suggestion. She was flat out Lois.
JVL00:48:36Thank you.
Vic00:48:37Well, thank you, Kevin. Okay. Also, and this is really embarrassing because we were talking about this in the last episode when I was complaining about the age differential between Andy Garcia and Diane Keaton. And I said because, you know, one was like. A son to the, you know, and the other one is more like a parent in Godfather 3. But listener Andrew Bettman reminds me that Andy Garcia is Sonny's illegitimate son. You know, the one who was conceived at the reception. Teresa, I think was her name. And not Michael's. Michael's son, of course, was an opera singer. I'm sorry about that. And I was thinking, you know. I can't believe you got something wrong from the Godfather. You know, part three, I get a little leeway for part three. Especially Godfather 3. Come on.
Sonny00:49:20Part three, the best in the series. Oh, my gosh. You know what?
Vic00:49:24It's underrated. Two years from now, we're going to have our 30th year retrospective of Godfather. And we'll discuss. Sonny, we'll discuss. And we could talk about whether or not, you know, the plot works like George Hamilton in lieu of Robert Duvall.
Sonny00:49:36Immobiliari.
Vic00:49:37Immobiliari, which is like BCCI. And, of course, the Vatican Conspiracy. Speaking of Vatican Conspiracies, next week, I am not here on the show. I will be in the Vatican. Oh, you're going to see the Commie Pope? No. We're staying in his domus. Paul VI, the resident. No, not even. We're staying in his domus, where he goes to eat in the cafeteria, the Casa San Marta, which is Domus Sancta Marte, the House of Martha. We're staying in that. I might see him. You could tell me when we're no longer recording what I should say to him if I end up seeing him. You say, who am I to judge?
JVL00:50:17Anyway. A little Catholic humor. Sonny, right over his head.
Vic00:50:20Yeah. The show will go on, and we have a great surprise planned for everybody. Yes. For next week. Surprise guest host. No names. No names.
JVL00:50:32The surprise will be that we have an episode next week. Maybe.
Vic00:50:36You got to have it. It's a big weekend. That's all the time we are giving to this episode. Questions, comments, complaints, compliments, tweet us at Victorino Matus at Sonny Bunch. At. JV Last. Sonny can't even get to the microphone anymore. He's done. Again, be sure to subscribe to us on iTunes or Google Play. Just type in Substandard under podcasts, and we are there. Leave a review. Tell your friends. Until next time.
JVL00:51:07I love you. So. JV. To people like Eric and Smug, who have been guilting us. Guilting us into all going to see the movies. That's, as this show proves, not a guarantee of quality. Like, we all took two and a half hours out of our lives just to see through that stupid movie. And I don't know that this was any better. The truth is, we might have been better off if we'd all just been, like, hanging out and talking. No, no. It would have been a lot shorter. We have. No, I think the grill part of the show is far superior, don't you?
Sonny00:51:43We could have easily done 30 minutes on grills. Tweet at us and let us know if we should do more grill talk.
Vic00:51:48I got a question for you, Vic. About your grill. Yes.
JVL00:51:51You have it yet? It's been delivered? It's in our backyard.
Vic00:51:53Of course. Okay.
JVL00:51:55What sort of grates do you have on it?
Vic00:51:58I thought it was cast iron, but it might be porcelain. Are they the wide cast iron? Well, you can flip it over. You can choose. So, like, if you're cooking something that's more delicate, then you have the thinner. And then if you want to cook a steak, then you put it in the middle. I'm still reading the directions, which are basically basic. I just have to heat it up for 20 minutes before you use it for the first time. And they have a great...
JVL00:52:20You know to season, if they're cast iron, you know you've got to season those grates?
Vic00:52:23Well, I have a cast iron pan, so I'm familiar, but I don't think so. But you don't know how to do it? You get a little olive oil. It might be porcelain.
JVL00:52:31You rub it on, right? You know what to do. I don't want you to screw up your...
Vic00:52:35No, thank you. I learned about seasoning cast iron from my old friends. Phyllis Richman taught me that. Phyllis Richman, the former restaurant critic of The Washington Post.
JVL00:52:43Question.
Vic00:52:43Yes, JVL. Does it have HDMI? No, but I told you, it's Bluetooth ready.
Sonny00:52:50I'm sure it's fine
