#354. 'The Sheep Detectives'

The main review is The Sheep Detectives (based on the novel Three Bags Full), a family film about a flock of sheep who solve their shepherd's murder using tricks gleaned from the Agatha Christie mysteries he used to read them aloud — and it's a hit with two of the three hosts. Sonny, who saw it without his kids, loves it, calling it "knives out if Daniel Craig was a sheep" and praising Emma Thompson's lawyer as pitch-perfect while dinging Nicholas Braun and Nicholas Galitzin's performances as broad and condescending toward the kid audience; Mike took his three older kids plus his three-year-old (his first-ever movie theater trip) and was thoroughly delighted, comparing it to "Agatha Christie meets Babe" and praising the film for treating its young audience like real people rather than leaning on dumb slapstick. JVL, who hasn't seen it, is wary going in — he says he hates kids' movies that traffic in "hugging and learning" and heavy metaphysical death talk (he's long hated Charlotte's Web), and would rather it were more like Strays or Who Framed Roger Rabbit; Sonny and Mike assure him it lands closer to Charlotte's Web or Babe territory, with faint, possibly unintentional Christian undertones given screenwriter Craig Mazin's atheism. The episode opens with an unusually long, TV-buying saga from JVL, who is trying to replace an ancient Pioneer plasma and gets stuck in analysis paralysis between LG's C5 and B5 OLEDs, an open-box Best Buy screen missing its stand, and a running "nits of brightness" bit that Mike and Sonny needle him about all episode (he still hasn't pulled the trigger by the end). Sonny commiserates about the looming chaos of summer break and camp-scheduling logistics, while Mike recounts a rained-out double-header of kids' baseball games that unexpectedly turned into an impromptu date night with Thai takeout. Box office chatter covers The Sheep Detectives holding well in its second weekend, new horror entries Obsession and the upcoming Backrooms (both YouTuber-adjacent horror films), and speculation about how The Mandalorian and Grogu will track over its opening weekend. JVL00:01:19So, I'm in one of those places where I had a problem that wasn't really a problem, but was a thing that could be. And so, my attempt to improve it involved fixing the audio on my very old Pioneer Plasma TV.
Sonny00:01:41We're talking like, this is like a 20-year-old TV.
JVL00:01:4420-year-old TV. So, I got a soundbar, I throw it on, and soundbar does not work with it because the HDMI is not an eARC HDMI, which is a reason, I mean, unimportant. The answer is, I couldn't. I created this problem that I've been trying to solve, and I have simply, there wasn't a problem to begin with, so I started spending little bits of money to fix the problem, and the further I go down the road, the more money I have to spend to fix it. And the, like at this point, the sunk cost in it is just like, fuck it, we're doing this. You know, it's, and what's the name of the? Horse? Prickly Pete is the name of the horse, right? I mean, Susan's parents know that there's no beach house in the Hamptons, but I'm driving there anyway, and the answer is, I need a very particular type of television for this very particular spot in the house. It has all sorts of weird requirements about it, and I am stuck in choice paralysis because the fucking flat screen TV. You know what? I guess I am a commie. I don't need this many choices. I resent having this many choices. I feel like there should be three choices for each. There should be good, better, best, and you could have maybe three options for each level of the good, better, best. That's it. But instead, you have 5,000 options at every single tier, even though all of these panels come off of one of three factory floors in South Korea.
Mike00:03:33Do you think Bernie Sanders would have been better off if instead of complaining about deodorant choices, he had complained about TV choices?
JVL00:03:41I think so. It is. I mean, and to find the to compare apples to apples, you cannot rely just on the specifications given to you by the TV makers because they give you almost no relevant information. You need to find out, say, the knits of brightness in order to get the knits measurement, you've got to go to third party reviewers who have got to go to our teams.
Sonny00:04:12Yes.
JVL00:04:12And now you've lost. That's terrible. But you got to go like TechRadar, Tom's guy, something like that. And now you're comparing, well, the same song you seven series has eleven hundred twenty eight knits of brightness, but the LG. See five series has eleven hundred and thirty one. Now, will you really notice those extra four knits? Well, I don't know. It depends. Is your room what is the brightness level of your lumens?
Sonny00:04:44How many lumens are in your room?
JVL00:04:46Oh, my God. I just and so I thought I found it. I found what I needed and it was at a price because it's the other problem. This is the third TV in the house. This TV will rarely be watched. And when it's watched, it won't be by me. It's for somebody, somebody who I care about, who I want to be comfortable. I want to have a nice viewing experience and she won't notice the difference, but I will. And this is, you know, like we're in a phase of life where there are so many things I can't control and this thing I can control and I can make this good. And so I've I've turned this TV thing. I've turned solving the TV. Purchase into a proxy for all of the things I can't control in my life. And so I, I, I was like, okay, I have found an LG C5 OLED screen for a, a price that makes me feel not irresponsible. It's an open box item. No problem. I ordered it with the Best Buy app. I drive over there and I get there and. Uh, they load it into my car and I say, where's the stand and say, oh, it doesn't come with a stand. Now, I don't know if you've ever purchased open box from Best Buy, but typically they let you know if it doesn't have pieces.
Sonny00:06:14I would, I would, first of all, I would never buy an open box product. I would never buy, I would never buy an open box electronic product. And I understand that this is. I've bought open box. Possibly. So many times. Snobbish on my part, but I just, I like, there would always be a little niggling part.
JVL00:06:33In the back of my head, something's going to go, something's going to go wrong with
Sonny00:06:39some, some asshole watched it at full brightness for like 72 straight hours. So I just couldn't, I couldn't, I couldn't possibly do it. I couldn't possibly do it.
JVL00:06:49Well, I, uh, so I, I, I was like, I need the stand. And then I was like, well, if I just go to eBay, could I? Can I buy a stand for, and, and then I was like, I'm 52 years old. I am too old to be saving $300 by assembling, uh, you know, an aftermarket stand for this. I was like, fuck, fuck this. Take this back into the store from your curbside delivery. I refuse to accept delivery of this. How can you say? So I go in and he's like.
Mike00:07:20But Aquaman, you cannot marry a woman without gills. You're from two different worlds. Oh, I wasted my life.
JVL00:07:27So we go back into the Best Buy and I, I, the, the guy's like, you know, we'll figure something out. Don't worry. Don't worry. Don't worry. So they sell me then a, the level down LG. So the LG B five, not the C five, which is, I am sorry to say only 1028 nits instead of the 1128 nits. So 10% fewer nits. The B, the almost 10% series.
Sonny00:07:57The LG B series is the suckers bet of, of LG OLEDs. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. You should have, you should have texted me. You should have texted me. I could have, I could have walked you through this, but here's the, here's.
JVL00:08:09So anyway, it's a hundred dollars more to get the, the new inbox version of the slightly shittier TV. But at this point I'm like, I just have to, I want this problem to go away. We drive home and I realized that there is another crucial difference between. Ooh, the C five and the B five. The C five has a single pedestal sand. Okay. B five has spread out feet and the spread out feet are three quarters of an inch further apart than the surface I have to put the fucking thing on. Yeah. And so it's going back. And so I, I am now going to return this thing. And. I have found myself thinking, well, fuck this. If I'm going to go to all this trouble, I might as well get like a 75 inch G five version of it. If I'm going to spend the money, let's spend all the money, all the money on the TV that is not going to be watched by me.
Sonny00:09:15And I, you know, it has a nice center pedestal is my Sony Bravia. Oh, it's got a nice little, nice little center center pedestal works. Works great.
JVL00:09:26G class Bravia. Anyway, so I am in a place where do you ever, do you ever get to the point where you just become so frustrated with something that should be easy that you, you, you want to throw money at the problem to make it simply go away? Every day of my life. I'm close to that point and I feel irresponsible about it and I feel like I shouldn't. But then on the other hand, I'm like, I'm 52. Why do I sweat $150 or do like, just, just do it. I'm a man. I'm a man. I'm 40. Right. You know?
Sonny00:09:59And, uh, and you can do 20 pushups in 10 minutes.
JVL00:10:03Maybe, maybe, maybe, maybe not in one day in 10 minutes, but if I spread that 10 minutes out over a couple of days, anyway, so I boys, I realized that I could simply go to Walmart and for, for $127 by an O N N four K TV, which will have vignetting all over every fucking corner and we'll have a screen that is as reflective as a mirror and have a viewing
Sonny00:10:32angle that is just imagine eight degrees. Just imagine all of the banding you'll get the vignettings and the, can you even, the
JVL00:10:41balloons you'll get on, on bright. Michael is like, but son, you know what I mean? Right.
Sonny00:10:48Jonathan, think of the black levels.
Mike00:10:51I mean, think of the black. Okay. Here's the thing. Here's the thing. There are no. There, there are no better situations that I can think of at the moment where the phrase ignorance is bliss applies because like, I don't know about any of this stuff and I would do exactly what you're suggesting JBL go to best. I go to Walmart and just buy it by the cheapest thing that fits the size of the room.
JVL00:11:17100%. I feel like I can't do it. Like I, it makes my eyes twitch. No, I feel like I would hate myself for having something like that in my home.
Sonny00:11:25You're a responsible consumer, JBL. You're responsible. So you're, you're, you take this seriously. Unlike some people on this podcast who do not take their responsibility as guilty as charged.
JVL00:11:35Sonny, should we make our eyes bleed by watching inferior picture quality?
Sonny00:11:40I just think, I just think it's nice that you love this person enough to, to put the bare minimum. And we're really talking about the bare minimum of effort here. Like it's not, you haven't made it, I assume you haven't made a pro and con sheet or a chart spreadsheet.
JVL00:11:56Have I made a spreadsheet?
Sonny00:11:58Oh, come on.
Mike00:11:59We know, we know, we know JBL.
Sonny00:12:01Um, no, I, well, look, I, I told you, look, this is what I'll just, I'll pull back the curtain here and tell the people what I told you. And I, you should, you, I would recommend just getting for this room, which is for a TV that is going to be a third TV that it does. I would have just gone with the QLED myself, which is a perfectly the, the Samsung 70 D or 70 F series, whatever, whatever number they're on right now, which is a perfectly acceptable TV. It's it. You're not, if she's not, she's not going to be like the only thing that will ever be watched on this is jeopardy.
Mike00:12:40What's exactly jeopardy is what will be on this television, $150 with whatever, all the vignetting you want. Like it won't matter.
Sonny00:12:47Yeah, I, I, that's, that's what I would have done for this particular TV. And this is in fact what I did. So we have two TVs in our home. We have, I have, I have a TV in. My room, my like, which is my work, like it's my work TV. It's the TV I watch movies on for work or your job, literal, your job, my literal job is to watch these movies on this TV. So I, I spent a little more when I, when my LG OLED burned out and I just got the Sony Bravia and it's been amazing.
JVL00:13:16It's an amazing out. You only got it like four years ago, dude.
Sonny00:13:19I know. Well, I told this, this, I've told this story on the show before, but it was the heat sink. Remember the. The like, yes, yes, there was, um, I was a real, and it's like a known problem with those LGs, which theoretically they fixed, but I couldn't, I should not buy an LG. Well, this is, so this is, this is what I, you know, I, theoretically they have fixed this problem. It was a known problem. They have better heat sinks now, whatever, but like, it's, it's like the open box thing. I could probably never buy another LG TV just because I like, I just couldn't, I couldn't me personally, I couldn't do it. You will be fine. You'll be fine. Um, uh, but for the, for my, for the other TV, we, we, uh, we got, we got a 55 inch QLED Samsung, the S 70 F or whatever it is. It's like a $600 TV. It's fine. Um, it's, it's like good. It's like a, it's, it is a, for, for what my kids use it for, which is playing switch mostly. Right. And, uh, watching the occasional like 20 year old episode of project runway. Why it's fine. It's like, that's, that's a, it's, it, that's a totally fine TV.
JVL00:14:29Have either of you ever met somebody who bought a TV and a year or two later thought, Oh, it's too big. I wish I had gotten a smaller size. No, literally no one has literally a thing I have never, ever encountered in my life.
Sonny00:14:43Literally no one has ever thought that.
Mike00:14:46All I can think about, all I can think about it through this whole conversation is how much I wish the TV that I bought most. Recently, a few years ago was bigger. Like I, it, it, it, I, every time I wish you had gone a size up, I wish I got a, don't
Sonny00:15:00you regret not having gone a size up? Yes.
Mike00:15:03This is every time you, the things, the things you would think about my TV situation in my house, you guys would, you guys would kick me off this podcast if, uh, if you knew what my TV.
JVL00:15:13So Sonny here, here are the two things. This is a genuine question. Yeah. So I, I have, I am convinced that a, I should be dry. I should be getting a 65 inch, not a 55. Yeah. Um, even though nobody will ever watch anything but jeopardy in this room. Um, but do I go with a 65 inch OLED and just bite the bullet and spend whatever it costs because eventually then that OLED will move to one of the other rooms in the house where we watch things more and the, the other, you know, cheapy OLEDs will move back here, right? Something like that.
Sonny00:15:51This is what I, this is the other thing I said to you, right? Is why not just replace the TV that's in there now with one of your other TVs that's a little bit bigger and a little bit newer and we'll work with the soundbar and then replace the TV that you are, have moved with the pedestal.
JVL00:16:05It's, it's, it's literally, it's the feet. I can't put, the feet are too far apart to, to, to fit this spot. Again, I am, I am constrained by all sorts of idiosyncratic things. Um, or do I just spend $400 on whatever? The cheapest, like, and, and again, I want to emphasize to you that this has taken on an outsized emotional importance to me because this stuff is, again, I am beset by all sorts of horrible things that I can't control in my life right now. And I feel like I can do right by this lady.
Mike00:16:43I, I have a, is there, and the answer may be no to this question, is there a way to transfer that onto something else in your life? Like, like. Take it, take it outta your TV calculus, mm-hmm, hold onto it for a bit, mm-hmm, get your $400 or it's $800 TV, whatever you need to get.
JVL00:17:02My ONN brand. Yeah. And then, and then.
Mike00:17:06Sharp. Find, find it. There you go.
JVL00:17:09Uh, and then find a new vessel for, I mean, I'm all, I'm, I'm all ears for it, but, uh, like the, the aperture of, of our world is like shrinking. Yep. By the day. And so they're, they're in a lot else. Right. And so that's why I'm like. Ah, I could do it anyway.
Mike00:17:25Then I say go with God.
JVL00:17:27Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The S the 65 inch C5 we know, well, you guys tell me how you're doing. I'm we'll just sort of live do this and, uh, maybe by the end of the episode, I'll order it. So you guys do some dudes chatting and I'm gonna, I'm gonna do some research and, and read you some prices.

Sonny00:17:53Um, not, not much. I, I, it's just, we are, we're, we're nearing the end of school. Tomorrow is the last day of school for, for our kids. So like summer, summer starts the day after Memorial day. And it's just, it's already like, Oh God, we've got different summer. You got some different, uh, camps that I gotta take the kids to every day. And they're all like. Yeah. The whole thing is a nightmare. Um, so that's, that's basically what's just going on in, in my world. I like, I have no, I have no fun, interesting things happening. I wish I was buying a TV. I wish I was, I wish I was like doing, doing fun stuff like that instead, I mostly, um, just trying to the, the best part about, you know, so my job, my job's, again, my job's a little bit weird. I have a weird job in the sense that I am. I work from home. And I watch movies and I interview people who have either written books or have made a movie or whatever. And like trying to figure out what times I just simply trying to coordinate what times I will be home as opposed to out picking up kids. So I can schedule these interviews is like doing quadratic equations in my head, trying to, trying to monkey this schedule around. And it, you know,
Mike00:19:23Zach Galifianakis in, uh, the hangover with the numbers go all around your head.
Sonny00:19:29I got the number. Uh, I prefer hackers, the, the, the, the moment in hackers where they see all the, you know, anyway. Um, but yeah, it's, it's exactly like that. So I have like, I, I, and again, this is like such small potato shit, but it's just like, it's like, and everybody's on either the west coast or the east coast. So like on top of like trying to figure out when I'm going to be home, I'm also like doing the math in my head about what times they're going to be available. And it's just, it's just a, it's a whole, it's a whole thing. Um, no, I like, I feel like an idiot complaining about it, but it is, it's just, it's just annoying. It's just annoying. Like having kids not be in school for three months is really unacceptable. We should have prison camps.
Mike00:20:13We can send them during the summer, but it is so true because the, of course, when you're a kid, you look forward to summer, right? You're not at school. There's all kinds of fun stuff. You can run around the neighborhood, maybe you're going on vacation, all these things. But even, even as an adult without kids, like summer is this exciting time, you know, there's like, uh, all kinds of things about summer that are that, that it, you know, the sun is out the, the, the, the day is longer, you know, you're able to, you know, go do fun things. And you know, when you're working. Sometimes companies have summer Fridays even, or just special stuff. And then like, when you have kids, it is, it is in the same way that like a snow day is hell, like a whole two and a half months of snow days, like, like yikes, like what are we gonna do? And then what you end up doing is spending more money or, uh, or time.
Sonny00:21:15You just spend money. Yeah. It's it's like, I, like for instance, you know, the first week that they were gonna be off. We didn't have. My son lined up for my seven-year-old son. And so like, he, the, he's gonna be at home this whole time and like, that's doable. I guess he's just gonna be watching screens, uh, and so that's no good. So in, so we, I like we, luckily we got, we got, we got a, we got a code for gym camp and they were 20% off. If you sign up now, it's like, okay, cool. I saved 50 bucks. I saved 50 bucks through my irresponsibility of not planning something until the very, literally. My last minute, which is great. I love that. I love that for me, um, personally, but, uh, I don't know, man, I know it's like, I hate, I hate complaining about this cause it is such, it's such penny any shit, but it is just like my life gets exponentially harder in summer and I'm tired of it. I'm tired of, I'm tired of my life and I, I'm going, I'm just gonna fire myself into the sun here and I think that'll, that'll solve a lot of problems. A lot of my problems. Frankly, the searing million Kelvin temperature of the surface of the sun will give me peace at last.
Mike00:22:33Okay. All right. Um, um, I hope that works out.
Sonny00:22:36How are you doing? Do you sweet? Do you, do you long for the sweet release of heat based extinction?
Mike00:22:41No, I, I actually had quite a positive thing to talk about today, but I feel like I may be out of step with, no, we had this, we had this experience. This, this evening. Thank you, Jamie. Uh, we had this experience this evening where, uh, speaking of kids where, like what was on the count. So not only is it, uh, you know, we're coming up on Memorial day weekend in which we have, you know, we still have school where, where we are like school does not end tomorrow. Uh, we, we have like three weeks of school left, but oddly next week we have two days after Memorial day in which the kids are off from school, that makes no sense to me. Why they also took Tuesday and Wednesday off. Maybe there's some religious holiday I'm not thinking of, but, uh, w so we've got this trip coming up, which I've talked about here up to Philadelphia. Uh, but we've just had this like busy, busy week of stuff, you know, lots of things happening and, um, you know, PTA meeting and, um, uh, a boy scout, uh, you know, uh, ceremony and all these things. And then, uh, the day that we're recording this Thursday, Thursday was gonna be the mother of it. We had two baseball games at the same time. And unfortunately it was one of these, which, which were usually if they have baseball games, they have them at the same park. But this was one of those where they were gonna be at two separate parks. So we weren't even gonna be sort of able to be there at the park to watch two games at once and, and get 'em all over with. And uh, but we've had all this rain here, JVL, I'm sure you've, you guys have been getting rain as well. And so early on, I found out my, uh, my oldest son, he's playing at a different park than normal. His, his game was rained out. It's like, oh, okay. So we just have the one game left. That's great. And then like 10 minutes before we leave to go to my eight year old's game, the coach sends a message, the fields are a mess. We're gonna have to cancel the game. So all of a sudden we had this like evening that was just gonna be, just gonna be like four, four and a half hours of, you know, running around. Uh, you know, how are we gonna eat dinner? Like, Hey, are we gonna pack some stuff for eat right before we go like at, at, at 4 45 to, to, you know, to go to warmups and then, and then just like shovel food in our mouths. And then we're gonna like all this, all of a sudden, like the whole schedule just opens up and we had this moment, uh, or my wife and I were like, you know, we could just like, we could order some food in and, and like have a drink. And let the kids just like do whatever they want. And, and half of them have already eaten dinner anyway, because they, because, uh, because they thought they were going to, you know, and it was just this, like, we basically went on a date at our house, like from, from like, like 30 minutes prior, like we had no idea we were gonna be doing this next thing. I'm like, ah, I'm ordering Thai food, Thai food and it was like, I mean, on the one hand, it was great and wonderful. On the other hand, it was like. This is like, this is like kind of sad that like, this is, you know, this is what we're, this is what, this is what we're like, you know, getting, getting excited about it's like canceled baseball games. Um, so anyway, so that's, that's what's happening. It was, it was, uh, it was nice and lovely and, and then, uh, and, uh, the kids were out of our hair. They were just, I don't know, downstairs watching bluey playing Zelda and, uh, it was great. So that's all that's going on with me.

Mike00:26:21Uh, well, as you can see, we're, we're, uh, we're doing this, uh, this podcast right now.
Sonny00:26:27So, uh, well, I was wondering why you had, uh, leather chaps on, I don't know, it was that, oh, that's just using to me. That's just a day that ends in why I was trying to figure out why you are in like hung up from the bondage. You guys can't see this, but Mike is actually just, he's like, he's just speaking into a microphone, but like, but it's clearly somebody has put it next to his mouth. I don't know how he got it there. Anyway.

Sonny00:27:26Yeah. It's a obsession. Yes. It's a, it's a horror film from a YouTube artists. Uh, Oh, I've heard about curry Barker, curry Barker. Apparently YouTube, YouTubers are having a whole moment. There was the Markiplier thing with the iron lung. Oh yeah. Big hit the, uh, the there's the Phillip who brothers is, uh, either Australians or New Zealanders. Sure. Uh, who made talk to me and, uh, bring her back or bring her home or something. Sure. Um, a movie I did not care very much for that second one. Uh, and then, and then, uh, next weekend, next, next weekend, I believe not this, not, not this coming weekend, which is the new Mandalorian and Grogu movie weekend after that, uh, as a movie called back rooms.
JVL00:28:19Oh, I've heard of this too. Yes.
Sonny00:28:22Which is another, another YouTube guy and it looks, it is looking to be an enormous hit. This is back. That's an eight 24 film, right? Yeah. So I, like, I get the sense that that's gonna be, it's going to surprise people, um, with, with what it does, uh, in the opening weekend. So we'll, we'll see what, what happens there.
Mike00:28:41Um, but yeah, I, uh, any thought, any thoughts on, on, on this, uh, box office lineup?
Sonny00:28:47No, I mean, I, I do think one of the reasons we're doing this. The sheep detectives is because it, it held very well at down just 36 and a half percent, I believe. Uh, yeah, yeah.
Mike00:28:5836 and a half. It's, it's, it's, uh, just under $30 million and it's through its second weekend.
Sonny00:29:03Yeah. A, a, a shockingly expensive movie. I saw a budget number on this. It was like $75 million or something. I guess. But it's Amazon. Don't come. Right. It's Amazon. So who knows what that even means? Who knows? Who knows? Who knows? They, they, that's the amount of money that they get from. Uh, you know, shipping TVs without stands, uh, and on any given, on any given day, uh, but the, um, but you know, I, uh, I think, uh, you know, things are, things are interesting. The big question is what's going to happen with the Mandalorian and Grogu this weekend. I think like that is, there's a lot of, is it going to be a hit?
Mike00:29:41Is it going to be, what's the, what's a tracking tracking is.
Sonny00:29:45I think, uh, the, the official tracking is somewhere in the eighties, like 80 to 85 million over the four day, over the four day, not the three day. Right, right, right. Which, you know, is, is down from what solo did. Solo did about a hundred million, uh, over four days, 102 million, something like that, which of course itself was, you know, uh, pretty, pretty disappointing, but like, I don't know what they're, I, I honestly don't know what they're doing over there, uh, with the star wars stuff.
Mike00:30:13Uh, can I, can I, can I say this in, in this movie's favor, um, I really like the poster and I really like what they've done with the title on the poster where it there, I mean, this is a low bar for star wars, like star wars is just such a, the, the, the adherence to the ridiculous kind of over the top form, you know, formalism, uh, that George Lucas for whatever reason, like imposed on all this, like the, the text on it is it's fun. It's a little, it's a little jaunty. It's a little like, Hey, this, this ain't. This ain't, uh, your normal star wars movie. This is a fun star wars movie.
Sonny00:30:55Right? Am I right? Uh, when I, when that came out, when that, when that poster came out, I, uh, I w I was talking to a design graphic designer, friend of mine, and he was like, I hate it. And I was like, oh, why, why? There's three different fonts in the title. There's three different fonts. Star Wars is one font Mandalorian slash Grogu. It is another font. And then the, the, and the and, or a third font it's a, and I was just like, I, this is like, this is in JBL. I feel like this is a thing that would also drive you kind of crazy. It does not, it does not bother me that much. Uh, but it, uh, I've never, I've never been a font. I like no webs are we, you know, we've spent our whole lives working in, in the written word industry. And there are, there are people who have very strong. Feelings about serifs versus sans serifs. And I gotta be honest, is never made a lick of none of that has ever made any difference whatsoever to me. I am not a font guy at all much to JBL consternation, but, uh, it, it, anyway, I've seen the movie. It's not very good, but it's going to be great for kids. Kids are going to love this movie. Um, and as such, as such, it's basically fine is like, I'm grading this thing on such a curve that it's like, yeah, if you have kids who like star Wars, they'll enjoy this.

I can tell you that much. That's a, that's the thing that's gonna be happening.

Mike00:33:01Yeah. I have to say to see, to see obsession, um, obsession, uh, Hocum. I've heard that one scary. Um, all right. Uh, any other box office thoughts? Should we move on and talk about number four, uh, sorry, number five on this week, it was four last week, five this week. Yeah. On the box office list. The sheep detectives, uh, which Sonny and I saw JVL did not, but he, but he's got questions for us. I, I gather, um, after we, after we discuss it three bags full, that's what it's based off of is, uh, that's the book that it's based off of, uh, uh, Sonny, do you want to give us a big boy review of the sheep detectives?
Sonny00:33:44The sheep detectives. It stars Wolverine as a shepherd who is. Who lives all by himself. And he's, he's lonely and he's, he's sad old man, except he's happy. Cause he, he doesn't like people and, and at night, every night he reads to his flock of sheep. He reads them horror murder mysteries. He reads them like Agatha, Agatha Christie things and, and the sheep all have different names. The, the sheep are all named, you know, there's a, let's see, there's Lily. Who's the smart one she's played by Julia, Louis Dreyfus. Brian can't Cranston play Sebastian. Who's the cranky loner sheep. There's a Chris O'Dowd who plays the sheep who, who can't forget anything. One of the weird things about this movie is that it posits that sheep can force themselves to just remember or to forget things at the drop of a hat. But Mopple can't do that. Uh, anyway, there's Patrick Stewart is, is, uh, the Shakespearean sheep.
JVL00:34:45What's that sheep can do severance basically.
Mike00:34:48Yeah. Yeah. So you can do without a device, the, uh, men in black, uh, mind wipe.
Sonny00:34:56Yeah. They do the mind wipe. They do the mind wipe. Cause they don't cause sheep don't like to remember sad things. So for instance, when, uh, somebody passes away, they, they forget they, they, they make themselves forget and they tell themselves that their sheep friends who have left are now just the fluffy clouds in the sky. Those are the sheep. You get it. It's like, anyway, uh, so anyway, the, these sheep. Uh, they have to, they have to use the skills that they have learned from listening to these Agatha Christie's stories to solve Wolverine's murder because they, they wake up one day and he's dead. He's dead in the field and he's got some, there's some clues, but the idiot police officer who's played by cousin Greg from succession, just a real fucking nitwit. This individual just, uh, just the biggest dummy on the planet. He shows up and he's like, Oh, everything seems fine. He died of natural causes probably. And the sheep are like, no, he's, you gotta solve the murder and they're doing sheep things to solve the murder while also confronting their own place in the universe, I guess. I don't know. Uh, all right. So I, I, I'm, I'm, I'm being a little over the top. I actually really enjoy this movie. Um, it is, uh, it is a good, it's good, clean family fun. It's like knives out. If, if Daniel Craig was a sheep and, and, and it's, it's really quite charming. It's really quiet. It's very funny. It's so it's produced by, uh, Lord and Miller, of course, who, uh, directed project hail Mary and, uh, shepherded, so to speak the, uh, across the spider verse movies, uh, out there that, you know, they're, they're very, they're, uh, they're, they're good filmmakers. Those two. They know, they know what they're doing. And this, this movie is absolutely, uh, is, is a very high quality piece of family filmmaking. Um, it is, it is sentimental without being cloying. Um, it is sweet without being, uh, you know, grotesque. Uh, and it, it, it's just, it's just really nicely done. It has, it has a couple of really great performances, including from Wolverine, but also, uh, uh, Emma Thompson plays, uh, this lawyer Emma Thompson plays this lawyer character who hits the perfect mixture of like arch and very like specifically kind of British. She has a, she has a British arch persnickety ness to her, which like there, there are, there were like 20 British actors who can do this and she's one of them. It's she's just very good in the role, which is a stark contrast to. Uh, cousin Greg, um, Nicholas Braun and Nicholas Galitzin who plays, uh, this, uh, this, uh, reporter newspaper reporter who shows up in the town and he was like, oh, solving this reporting on this case will be my big break and I will become a famous newspaper reporter because that's what everybody wants to be now. Famous newspaper reporter. Um, uh, they are both terrible in this, like actually like they are, they are arch in a bad way. Very like, they are like, oh, we're in a kid's movie. Let's act like the people who are watching this are fucking brain damage. Um, but Emma Thompson, Emma Thompson understands that you don't, that's not how you play a movie like this. You, you play it, you play it straight ish. The issue is important. Anyway. Um, I like, I, I, so I like this movie a lot. I didn't take my kids to see it though. Mike, you did right. You took your kids. Uh, what did they, what did they make of the detectives?
Mike00:38:50You know, I should, I should preface this by saying this, this is the first time I ever took my three year old to a movie theater and, uh, it was, uh, it was an adventure. It was, you know, it was great. He loved it. He loved the seats. He loved, uh, because we did not, we, we did not go to a fancy theater. We went to a pretty cheapo theater, which is great.
JVL00:39:12We love, um, but it had the folding seats where, and what is the cheapo theater you go to?
Mike00:39:19Uh, there's two. There's one. There's one near George Mason, um, that, that is, uh, I, I don't know how to describe it.
JVL00:39:27It's, it's, it's like down the street from George Mason 23 or by like, uh, is it like
Mike00:39:32a, yeah, it's not a second run theater, it's a, no, no, no, it's a, it's a first run theater at ox road and Braddock road. Yep. I know where that one is. Yeah. It's like, it's 12 minutes from our house. Um, regal. No, no, no. It's independently. It's independently.
JVL00:39:46Yeah.
Mike00:39:47It's a little strip center, right? Correct. It's on the other side of a, of a, of a big strip.
JVL00:39:50Small and, um, yeah, our, we, our pediatrician used to be over, over there.
Mike00:39:54Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, so there, and, uh, it's, uh, it's, it's a great theater and we, we, we patronized it during COVID because they basically were like selling popcorn. You could like go buy popcorn at this theater. And then kind of later on, we held a, uh, my oldest son's birthday party where we just rented out a theater and, and we bought, um, Peter pan on DVD and just like had them throw that on the screen. It was great. Uh, so it's a good theater. I, I took the, the, the boys there and, um, the, the big kids loved it. They were very interested in seeing it and, uh, they, they had a great time. My three-year-old loved it, but it was like, it was probably, there were probably about six minutes left in the movie and he just like looks up at me and he's like, this is after leaving the theater four times to go to the bathroom.
JVL00:40:44Uh, yeah.
Mike00:40:45Yeah. Um, he, uh, he looks up to me and he goes. Why aren't we going yet? I was like, well, there's like six minutes left in the movie, but we'll anyway, it's just, it was stretched his, stretched his limits.
Sonny00:40:58Uh, the, but my, my big, it's not short, it's like an hour and 50 minutes.
Mike00:41:02Yeah. But it, it was great for my bigger, like they, they, it was a perfect length for them. Um, they loved it. Uh, so I would say my, my, um, my older boy's favorite joke was, I think I told you guys this. They were, uh, when, when the sheep are walking past the church in the town. And they have this very, I thought very cleverly written discussion about the church. And the one says, uh, like, what's that? Oh, oh, that's a church. God lives there. What's God. And they have this whole run, which my kids have like repeated since we saw this movie, which is, uh, well, uh, he's a shepherd, but he's also a lamb, but he's also invisible. Uh, and he's also, uh, he also damns people and they're like, damn. Like he, he, like, he's a beaver and they're like, yeah, exactly. And uh, he's also bread and, uh, they eat him, but only every Sunday. And like, my kids just thought this was the funniest, like the, the funniest sort of bit of like fish out of water, you know, an alien describing something he doesn't quite understand. And, uh, they, they, like, they just repeated that joke over and over again. And so they loved it. Um, my three year old really loved when the sheep had the bucket. Um, yeah, that was, that was a, that was a huge hit with him.
Sonny00:42:26Um, question, question, Mike, uh, what, what's your take on the religiosity of this movie? Because I think it's like, I think it's like kind of sneaky, sneaky religious, like in the sense of like, there's lots of talk of shepherds and it's very much like a, you know, stewardship and that sort of thing. Um, which, you know, I, like, I, I mean, it's not, it's not an explicit, it's not an explicitly Christian film, but it's also the sort of movie that like if angel studios had put it out, I would not have been shocked.
Mike00:43:06Right. I mean, there would have been like, it would have been a couple more angel studios ask beats in it. I think if they had put it out, I mean, I think it's just kind of reflective of the, it's not quite fair to call it like Victoria. But what would that be? The, the, the, the Georgian or Edwardian sort of, I mean, cause yes, it takes place in modern times, but the world in which it like operates this little town and the field, like it just has this older English countryside feel where that, that I think helps give it a set, like where, like that kind of stuff is just, it's just a part of, you know, that's just kind of a part of it. It's a part of like all those Agatha Christie novels that take place in the countryside. Like there's a vicar and there's a, there's a, you know, and it just, it feels like it's it, I think it feels that way because of the setting and, and just the fact that it's about sheep. Like, I do think that has like the, the, the, the symbol, you know, symbolism is just sort of hitting you over the head. I'm not so sure the filmmakers knew what quite like are, are like thinking of that. Uh, but I could be wrong. I don't know. And I mean, it's certainly, um, I, it could be read that way for sure.
Sonny00:44:25Yeah. Um, I'm just, I, I'm just curious. I, because it's written by Craig Mazin, who is like a, he's like a fairly vocal atheist. So like, I, like it, it's, it's just, it's an interesting little, I don't know, even
Mike00:44:41even, even, even modern Western atheists are, they're living in a Christian, Christianized
Sonny00:44:46dead man was written by Rian Johnson, who is. Well, this is what I, this is what I compared it to. It's, yeah, it's, it's a movie. It's a movie that I think at the very least you could say takes, takes ideas of faith as seriously as the faithful.
Mike00:45:03One, 100%. Um, all right. So otherwise I was thoroughly delighted by this movie. Uh, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it and surprised by, um, just by the, the, the movie just feels like something from a past era. Like, I just feel like they don't make me, I mean, I know that's a, such a cliche to say, but they really don't make movies like this, uh, very much. And I mean, maybe I stole part of this from your review, Sonny. I can't remember, but you know, it, it does feel like act the Christie meets babe. Um, you know, it's, it's very much like has that, you know, I mean, it's got talking animals, but it just, the way in which like live. The action, like it's a, it's a, it's a live action movie that loves its setting, uh, in the countryside. It, uh, you know, it, it has enough goofy kid friendly sort of, uh, uh, slapstick or animal humor and that sort of stuff. But it, it's, it doesn't just have like little winks at the, at the grownups in the audience. Right. Like it's a, it's a real movie, right. It's got like, it develops and, and it, and moves forward. It's got subtleties and you know what? It's like a little scary at times. And there were moments where I was worried my kids were going to be like, especially my younger ones were like going to freak out, but they were just entranced by it because it was, it, it had, you want to know what was going to happen next? Were they, how are they, were they going to get out of it when the, when the, those creepy French sheep show up and then like the, the dogs and all that stuff. And you know, it was, it's, it's a, it is a, it. Feels like a movie like from when I was growing up, that is for kids and for families, but is also taken seriously by the people making it. And, and, and it takes the, uh, you know, uh, Nicholas bronze, uh, uh, performance, notwithstanding, it takes its audience seriously and treats them like real people and not like kids who need, you know, dumb, dumb kid humor. So anyway, I, I, I was just, uh, you know, I like seeing movies like this. They should, they should make more of them. And, uh, and, uh, you know, two thumbs up as, uh, as some critics have said,
Sonny00:47:32you're not allowed to say that actually, that is protected by copyright by the state of, uh, Siskel and Ebert. You literally like two thumbs up. They have, they, they have copyrighted.

JVL00:48:28Mel Gibson. That's, that's a great family movie. Love chicken run. But then when I started looking into it, it seemed like it had a lot of hugging and learning, which is what the two of you guys honed in on with questions about the afterlife and death and place the universe. And I gotta say. The particular spot where I'm occupying right now, I want none of that in my fucking entertainment.
Sonny00:48:56Yeah. Give me strays.
JVL00:48:58I can see that. I would like to go see strays. And if, if I can't see strays, then I would like to go see who framed Roger Rabbit. Could we, could we do the sheep detectives, but it's who framed Roger Rabbit? It's just fun.

Sonny00:49:16It's definitely, it's not quite like that. It's closer to like. The, the comparison point I would make is it's closer to something like Charlotte's web or babe.

Mike00:49:43I think the sheep detectives is less, is, is less like hugging and learning. It's, it's actually, it's actually. I think it's an interesting story about like expanding your world a little bit and like learning that there's more than, than like what you're then, you know, like you don't have to be a sheep, right? Like you, you, you sort of like there's, there's a bigger world out there.

Mike00:50:10Strays is about that. That maybe that, maybe that's what put that idea in my head. Um, I don't know. Can I, can I say a word about Molly Gordon who, uh, she keeps, she keeps popping up and I love her and she's Molly Gordon. She's a light. She is delightful.

The movie, the bluey episode where bandit takes the kids to the movies and it, it bluey has been to the movies, but bingo has never been to the movies. That is maybe the most true to life depiction of parenting that I have ever seen.

JVL00:52:40Ever anywhere. It's like seeing a documentary about what it's like to take your children to the movie.
Mike00:52:47The whole show was like this. Every, every episode is like this. No, it's like, it's like, oh, that's, that it's like, that's my experience. Um, so, uh, the three year old was able to hang. Like I said, he, it was like, he, speaking of bluey, by the way, this is, this is the thing that we live with right now. So he, I think this is in like a bluey mini sowed, which of course he's also seen like those 20 times. Um, but it's like something where bingo is getting potty trained. And she says, she says something like, I think what she says is like, I have to go to the toilet. I'm bursting or something like that. Um, but he says, uh, he says it wrong. He says I'm busting. Um, and so literally like three or four times a day, he'll just be like, I have to go to the toilet. I'm busting, which he said like multiple times while we're in this. Um, so like that was like, he enjoyed eating the popcorn. He enjoyed like seeing the things from the trailer that he, you know, he recognized like in the, in the movie. Itself, he was like, oh, that's the bucket on the head. Um, that sort of stuff. Um, the, the, the funny, funniest part was as we were, it, it, it was not a problem until the very, until we were, the movie was over and we were leaving. As we're walking out, they have all of the like little dinky arcade games and there's a claw machine in there, which is also in a bluey episode. Uh, there's a claw machine in that blue episode. It's a great episode. Uh, it is a great episode. And. Uh, that, that was not only what he fussed about for the entire drive home after the movie that we didn't play the claw machine. Um, but like, that was his takeaway from the movie for the next two days, like talking to his mom, talking to his like, they had a claw machine. It was like, can we, he woke up the next morning and begged me, he's like, can we go back to the movie theater so I can put a coin in the hole and place the button? I was just like, okay.

JVL00:54:56Oh, I tried to explain this might be the most perfect physical distillation of the human psyche ever devised. It's filled with things that you wouldn't bend over to pick up if they were on the street in front of you, but because they are hidden away yet within sight. You are willing to pay money to try to prove that you have the skill to get them.
Sonny00:55:26Yeah. I mean, think about how great that think about how great that stuffed animal is going to look, though, in your bed. Yeah.
Mike00:55:32Next to the sheets, 30,000 other stuffed animals.
JVL00:55:36If you showed this to Aristotle, Aristotle would say, yes, I understand everything about this.
Mike00:55:43That's right. But JVL, if you just move that little joystick, those claws, I mean, it's you right on top.
Sonny00:55:50I think it's I think it's very cynical. Both of you not to acknowledge that everyone's a winner when you play the claw machine every time. You never, never. My favorite are there. They do have at the at Dave and Buster's. They have like claw machine games are like every every time's a win. And it's these shitty little ducks. My daughter loves those. She has 7000 of those little rubber ducks.

Sonny00:56:51Honestly, it was a Sutton Foster. Surprise. Big surprise. That's right.
JVL00:56:55So Hugh Jackman moved to New York City to take a role in a Broadway musical and divorced his wife. Because he had an affair with a woman. What? The world is full of no part of that makes any sense. The every part of it makes sense, except for the punchline.
Sonny00:57:14The the no huge. I mean, I don't think it's that. I don't think it's that weird. I feel like I guess he made that.
JVL00:57:20He made that. He does stuff like that. Yeah, that's true.

But it's OK to touch loss, but not like big metaphorical metaphysical questions about like, you know, see, it's the nature of existence.
