Mike00:00:00I'm melting melting. Oh what a world, what a world. Who in the world could look like you to destroy my beautiful wickedness?
?00:00:10Ah look out! Look out! I'm going.
Mike00:00:30Welcome to the Sub-Beacon Podcast. I'm your co-host, Mike Warren. I was having a dream about being on a podcast, but it wasn't a dream. It was a place. And you, JVL, and you, Sonny Bunch, you were there. But you couldn't have been, could you? Hmm. I forget what I was supposed to say after this. Anyway, join us over at the Sub-Beacon. Sub-Beacon.com. Check us out at Instagram at Sub-Beacon. Join us over at Sub-Beacon.com. Tell your friends and family if they want to listen to this show. They've got to do it at Sub-Beacon.com. We're going to be talking about, well, what are we going to be talking about? We're going to be talking about The Wizard of Oz at The Sphere.
Guest00:01:20Oh, yeah.
Mike00:01:20Later on in the show. That's where there's a pained intro.
Sonny00:01:25All sorts of Wizard of Oz talk we could do here, but we're going to be talking Wizard of Oz at The Sphere.
Mike00:01:30Later on, though, in the show. But first, Sonny, what is going on with you?
Sonny00:01:39I have a confession to make. I'm not proud of this. It's not a thing I'm really excited to share with everybody, but I am now a two-Apple TV household. Oh, you're not. We have two TVs. We have two TVs in the house, right? Sure. One in the house. One in the living room, one in the entertainment room, whatever, however you want to divide it up. And on the main TV, we've had an Apple TV for like five or six years now. It works perfectly. It's great. It's like, I don't like using the native software on any of these smart TVs. I just want my TV to be a monitor that emits perfect imagery. That's all I want. I don't want, I don't need...
JVL00:02:25That's why I use Roku, because the Roku OS is so good.
Sonny00:02:29I don't use any of these. I don't like any of them. I don't like any of them. So I, on the main TV, I've had an Apple TV for a long time. And on the other TV, we've had a Fire Stick, like a $20 Fire Stick, you know, that we've...
JVL00:02:43That's a garbage OS.
Sonny00:02:44The Fire Stick is almost worse than just using the native TV OS.
Mike00:02:49Is that different than the Amazon TV? Same, it's the same operating system.
Sonny00:02:55Yeah, I think it's the same OS.
Mike00:02:56Because that's what we, we have an Amazon TV.
Sonny00:02:58And I hate... It's just fire built in. It's just, it's very slow and it's clunky and it doesn't, it doesn't work very well. And it like, it, it, I've always, I've always hated it, but we haven't had to use that TV very much. Well, the, the main TV, as folks will remember it, the motherboard went bad on it. So we've been spending a lot of time with the other one. And I moved the, I, I eventually just got so tired of the Fire Stick that I unplugged it and brought the Apple TV over and was like, we're using this over here now. We're using this over here now. And then once I did that, I was like, we can never go back to the Fire Stick. The Fire Stick is going in the trash. I'm going to put it in a shredder. What's that?
JVL00:03:36Are you a farmer?
Sonny00:03:38Right. I like, I can't live that way. Even if I'm only watching like one thing a week on that TV, I don't watch, we don't, we're not going to use that TV very much. But I'm not going to, I'm not going to subject my family or myself to that Fire Stick any longer. So I went to, I went to the Apple store and I bought, you know, the third. Generation, whatever the new generation of Apple TV 4K is. And let me tell you, big upgrades all around, especially with the remote, the remote, the new Apple TV remote folks. It's a real marvel. The original one, it's a little too thin. It's a little too thin. It kind of slips into place.
JVL00:04:17Does it control the entire television?
Sonny00:04:19Yeah. Oh yeah. It can.
JVL00:04:22It can. The beauty of the Roku TVs is it's one remote for everything. It's for the TV and the operating system.
Sonny00:04:29So I have it now set up that, uh, if I press the, if I press like the home button on the Apple TV, the TV turns on, it goes right to the Apple TV screen and I can turn on the soundbar right there too. With like, if I press the, if I press the volume button, the sound, the sound bar comes on. So it's, it's pretty, it's pretty perfectly. And it was easy to trade. So like the, the training, the Apple TV to work, the soundbar was very easy. You just had to hold the, the, the soundbar remote next to the Apple TV remote and you press the volume up button and work perfectly. Um, but it's, uh, I do feel like I feel, it feels a little bit decadent, frankly, to be a two Apple TV, like that's the sort of thing that the richest Kings of Persia would have done back in the day. It's not that it's like a hundred, it's $129 was how much it costs.
Mike00:05:25I mean, with that and your, and your fancy luxury fridge. I mean, you might as well, you might as well, Sonny. That's true. Can you put an Apple TV connected to the fridge?
Sonny00:05:35Uh, no, there's one of the great things about this fridge is that it's a dumb fridge. I like all, I want my, I want all of my appliances to be dumb appliances. I don't want anything connected to the internet.
Mike00:05:45We've had this, yes, totally.
Sonny00:05:46I don't, I want nothing. I want none of it connected to the internet. I don't want anything. I don't want anything that hackers can get into and start ruining my life with.
JVL00:05:54I don't want them the internet of things.
Sonny00:05:57I'm against the internet of things. I am against the internet of things. The internet of things is bad. I like to the extent that like, at one point I was considering foolishly and very briefly, the, the, you know, the thermometer, like the, the temperature, the thermometer, I guess, what do you call it? Thermometer in the house, thermostat, thermostat. Thank you. Thermostat nest. Well, it's not a nest, but it's one that you can connect to the internet. And I thought, well, maybe I could do this and then I would turn it on. I'd be able to, I'd be able to like set it. So I, it, it would run on program. And then I was like, no, you know what? No, I don't need that. I don't need that. I don't want that. I don't want to, I don't want anybody coming in and messing with it. I don't want that. So I'm just not doing it. Some of these, some of these new lights, some of the, you go to the home depot and you get these lights and they're like connect to the wifi and then you can change all the colors. I'm like, why would I ever want my lights to be connected to the wifi? Why would I, what on earth? What on God's green earth would I ever do with wifi? Connected lights question.
Mike00:07:01What about, what about Alexa or Google home or whatever those connected, uh,
Sonny00:07:09outlets I have, I have, I thought against having any of those in the house for a very long time and eventually I ha I got one, I got like the kids, Alexa for my daughter so she could listen to streaming music in her room and like, that's the only thing it's used for, but if I could get rid of that and just give her a CD player or a tape deck, I would, I would give her a compact disc player and she could listen to music on that.
Mike00:07:38If she wanted to listen, so, so, so, so no internet connectivity for your appliances, but like go all out balls to the wall when it comes to your TV. Yeah. I mean, that sounds like that sounds on brand for you, but no, but it's very
Sonny00:07:52specifically like I, again, I don't have, I don't want my TV to hook up to the internet. I don't want my TV to. Hook up to the internet. I don't want my TV to hook up to the internet. I want the Apple TV to hook up to the internet. That's a different thing. Oh, I see what you're saying.
Mike00:08:05Cause the Apple TV is its own device.
Sonny00:08:07The Apple TV is its own device. Okay.
Mike00:08:08Yeah. Yeah.
Sonny00:08:09Okay. I don't, I don't want my Blu-ray players connected to the internet. I very rarely will connect my PlayStation five to the internet. If I need to download a game or something, but like, I don't want that just constantly running on. I want as few entry points into my house as possible from the outside. That's what I want.
JVL00:08:26That's how they get you.
Sonny00:08:28That's how they get you. That's how they, it only takes one. It only takes one. And then you have a router, right?
Mike00:08:37Exactly.
Sonny00:08:38Because once they, once they get in, once they get in, then you're wearing the tin foil full-time. I only wear it part-time right now. It's fine.
Mike00:08:45That, that, that is like the plot of a great movie, right? It's like the, the, the, the dad who is, uh, you know, who's kept all of it out, but he's got the wifi in there. And that's actually how they, how they get into your, into your house and they lock the doors and they, whatever. So, um, no, I'm sure you'll be fine. I'm sure you'll be fine. Sunny. Uh, well, good for you. Congratulations on your second TV.
Sonny00:09:06Thank you. Thank you. A big day, big, big fun purchase for me there.
JVL00:09:11JVL boys. I think I found the saddest place on the internet.
Sonny00:09:17Is it this podcast?
JVL00:09:18You've not that bad. I, uh, I was on the reddits and I, uh, I belong to a number of watch subreddits as I'm certain. You would assume. And I would say that in most of them, there was a great deal of, how did the French say, uh, bon ami, just a lot of good feeling and just guys who love watches talking about their watches, showing each other some dick pics with their watches and I'm just, you know, it's just good times. It's good times.
Sonny00:09:49Sure.
JVL00:09:50And, uh, I don't know why, but I was curious the other day to see how the other half lived. And so I joined the Patek. Philippe subreddit. Now, do you boys know what Patek Philippe is? Of course I don't.
Sonny00:10:03They're very expensive watches.
?00:10:05Okay.
JVL00:10:06Patek Philippe is the, the granddaddy of all of the, I'm going to say large brands, but Patek, I mean, Patek makes, I don't know, 10,000 watches. A year, right? So Rolex. Patek makes a million watches a year. Uh, Omega makes like 300,000 watches a year. Yep. Patek is, we're considering it mass produced, even though they're all missing made by hand, but they, they, they are like the biggest of the pure Geneva, you know, high, high horizon. What? What? Or are the, or are you? Yeah. Did you see that? Anyway. Um, so I went on to the Patek Philippe subreddit and, uh, it is not like the other watches, uh, as a, for instance, somebody posted a thing, uh, saying, Hey, I just found this Patek Philippe Nautilus with a, uh, with a quartz movement in it. What do you guys think? And the replies were a parade of people making fun of the poster for being poor. And just so you understand, this is a $25,000 watch. He was talking about sure. And everybody's response to him was like, Oh, just go get a Casio poor person. Anyway, uh, and there was another post, which I found in which a gentleman did. So within watch Reddit, a thing that people do is they sit in their cars and that right up against the steering wheel, like the center of the steering wheel, they do a wrist shot with their watch. So you can see both the watch they're wearing and the brand of car they drive. This is the thing. Sure. And somebody posted a picture of his Patek in front of the steering wheel. And it's a mini, so a mini Cooper. And the, the replies are a succession of people saying, ha ha, that's a fake. That's not a real Patek.
Mike00:12:29Because how could a mini driver be wearing a Patek?
JVL00:12:33Who could say why? But the, I mean, the point is that a whole mess of people who are part of this felt the need to say, no, no, that's fake. That's not real. Why would they do that? Who, what do they care? But what's sadder is that the gentleman who posted this then went running to the moderators and insisted on providing the moderators proof that this was real. So we give him his real name and he showed them the receipt for where he bought it for him and how much he paid and all of this. And he browbeat the moderators into then going into the post, into the thread and saying, well, we have now looked at the evidence and this is a real Patek. I just thought you fucking people. Every fucking one of you ought to be fired into the sun. That's all.
Mike00:13:32It's incredible to find a subreddit with like the most insufferable people because like that, that is quite a, that is, it's quite a bar. I mean, wow. Wow. That's all I got. So you're not buying a Patek, Philippe, is what you're, this is not your way of introducing.
Sonny00:13:57What does like a, what does a non-quartz movement Patek run? Well, I just looked, I just looked while JVL was, while JVL was talking.
JVL00:14:06What was your question again? What did you, what number did you say?
Sonny00:14:1050, 60,000, a hundred, a hundred thousand. What, how expensive are these watches?
JVL00:14:13You think it's some of them in the forties to seventies? Some of them.
Mike00:14:17I will just say, I'm looking at one right now on Patek's website. I'm not a watch guy. This will shock no one. But I just was looking. I was looking at the whole gallery of them and the one that I would like, the one that as I was scrolling through that caught my eye.
JVL00:14:33You probably looked at the Calatrava. No, it's the Grand Complications. Oh, the Grand Complications are nice.
Mike00:14:40It does look very nice. It's listed as $243,000.
JVL00:14:46Yeah, well, I mean, the good news is you can't just buy that. Like if, if you had $243,000 to buy it, you couldn't because that's the other thing with Patek's. Like you gotta, you gotta. You know, there just aren't very many of them because again, they're making these things all by hand. It's a bunch of guys, little gnomes in Switzerland. And so you've got to establish a sales history with the Patek authorized dealer and you have to buy a bunch of cheap, cheap versions of the watches, you know, the $40,000 to $70,000 watches before they will then sell you one of the Grand Complications. Yeah, that makes sense.
Mike00:15:24Of course. All right.
JVL00:15:26Well, but what's. What's funny is the the prototypical Patek owner is somebody who just like really loves watches. The guys on the subreddit, I was like, what the where the fuck did you come from? Like, these are like the most toxic Internet trolls. Right, right. Is how they're acting. I mean, or like toxic comic book fans is how they were acting. Like the worst kind of, oh, I can't believe they brought Firebrand.
Mike00:15:56Back. Everybody knows that she died and kept a Marvel 73, but I'm sorry. What is the point of being someone with that with with that kind of luxury good? If you can't lord it over the people with a lesser luxury good, I am sorry, but if you
JVL00:16:16have a luxury good like a Patek Philippe, what the fuck are you doing on Reddit? You surely live in a world full of wonders, right? Like a world of like weird. You're this is everything you want is on offer.
Mike00:16:29Why are you on Reddit? JVL, this is the secret. All of that material like does not bring you happiness. All of that material wealth does not bring you happiness. You still are mining the depths of Reddit. So maybe that's that's that's all I got.
JVL00:16:43How are you? Did you like the green complication? Which one were you looking at? Were you looking at the perpetual calendar?
Mike00:16:49Hold on. It's the let me go. Let me go back to it here. That's the 5160. Oh, retrograde. Yeah. Retrograde. What's it called? Perpetual calendar.
JVL00:17:02Yeah. Do you know what a perpetual calendar is? I have an idea. So a perpetual calendar. So keep in mind, this is a mechanical watch. So this is all accomplished with gears and springs and screws. It is a mechanical watch that keeps track of what month it is. So I see that what day it is meaning with the numbers of days in each month and what year it is. So it knows your leap year.
?00:17:36Yeah.
JVL00:17:37So it knows that it's like February 29th and it knows that it's in a year with a February 29th and then it ticks it. I mean, I am sorry, but just as a matter of like somebody built that with gears. That's impressive.
Mike00:17:53That's impressive. Pretty impressive.
JVL00:17:54That is pretty impressive.
Mike00:17:55That's also appears to have like a start, a mini star chart on it. I'm not sure.
JVL00:17:59Oh, that's a, that's a moon phase as well. It's a moon phase. So moon phase also. Come on, man. That is just ridiculously hot.
Sonny00:18:11Well, the moon phase makes more sense though, because that's just the same.
JVL00:18:15That's just on a cycle. Well, I mean, actually.
Guest00:18:19Actually, the moon phase is not a static 28 days.
Sonny00:18:2628 days, 17 minutes.
JVL00:18:28And it does. So IWC has created a perpetual moon phase where the moon phase will be right for the next 500 years. Again, mechanically.
Mike00:18:38They did that with gears. Yeah. The moon phase part is actually what grabbed my attention. That and the, and the, the, the type of the, of the numbers. Yeah. Looks really cool. Patek is hotness. Anyway. How are you, Michael? Oh, I'm fine. I got a lot. I go in a lot of different things going on. Um, if I mentioned the book, the bookcase project that I've been working on for almost a year.
Sonny00:19:06Um, which is mentioned something about building a bookshelf. Oh, about a year ago.
Mike00:19:12Yes. So it's in the basement. Um, Oh, that's still ongoing. Yeah. Okay. You and my wife, both. Um, no, it's just, it's a matter, it's a matter of like, it's your, it's fake built-ins. And I've never done, you know, I've never like done molding and trim before.
JVL00:19:33So I have accomplished, are you making your own molding or are you just buying the molding?
Mike00:19:39I'm buying it and, but cutting it, but it's like, it's that thing where it's the basement. And so the, uh, the floor and the ceiling is, is not, yeah, none of it's square. Yeah. And, um, and like, I, I've also got this situation where the rest of the room has like a, as a pretty short, uh, crown molding, but for the bookshelf, we wanted something tall crown molding wise. Well, I've got to join them at a corner in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. So my, uh, my solution was to get a transition block for the corner that I could put there. And then you could put the one and you can put the other and it's supposed to look somewhat nice. Uh, but of course the transition block is too, that, that can fit there is too short for the wide crown molding. So I've got to use a coping saw to cut in the form of the, the rest of the mold, you know, of the rest of the transition block. And it looks awful. And I tried so many times to get it right. And I finally have just been like, the quality of doneness is what matters here. And caulking will solve cheap with cock. I love it. I'm going to, I'm going to, I've already cocked it up, so I'm going to cock it up. Um, and, uh, so, so that's that. So, so that's basically all that's really all that's left now is the caulking and then the painting, which, which, uh, Melissa is going to do.
JVL00:21:19Um, so it'll be done by Halloween.
Mike00:21:23Yeah, we, we got it. We got the, the, I, so the Ikea bookshelves that you're, that you use to make these faux whatever. We got them for Christmas last year. Um, so it's like my shed. It's almost done. It's almost done. So, you know, the, the other thing I was going to mention is that, uh, before we, before we recorded this, uh, before they went to bed, I taught my two older boys how to play blackjack, which I feel like I could have taught them earlier, obviously. Like they're, they're at the age where like they could have learned earlier, but like we just never gotten around to it. We'd been learning other card games. And then like my middle son who, um, I'll just say this here. He is the one whose affection I crave the most and who he gives the least. He's just holding. He's like Lucille Bluth. That's right. He reserves it. And for perhaps for that reason, I, you know, seek it out. Um, he's also the most like me, uh, of, of my three children. And, um, so there's a lot, anyway, there's a lot going on.
Sonny00:22:38What does that tell you? What's that tell you about yourself, Mike?
Mike00:22:40Oh, the, the things I would tell a therapist if I ever saw a therapist. Um, so, but I had the, um, I, I had the experience of him like out of nowhere coming up to me as I was like doing some chores around the house this evening. And he just said, um, he, what are you doing now? I was taking the trash out. He goes, what are you doing after you take the trash out? I was like, uh, just stop. What, what, what, what's up, bud? And he's like, do you want to play a game? And I was like, yeah, sure. I'll drop everything. I'll drop all the things I have to do tonight. If you want to play a game and then to add to it all, when I was done with my, with this chore and I said, all right, what, what, what did you want to play? And he said, I don't know. So he was like then asking me to provide something. So I said, well, let's get, let's get deck cards. And, uh, I was like, and I'll teach you how to play blackjack. And then my older son came and he wanted to learn how to play. So all three of us did a bunch of pennies and nickels. No. So we're going to move to, we're going to, we're going to work our way up to that. So I just really needed to get them to kind of start understanding. I'm, I'm going to teach him the book eventually, but for now, it's just let them like kind of intuit, you know, the book or like, you know, do that sort of like, okay, let's think about this. If you're at 15, you know, I was sort of just trying to do like an almost a math lesson. Like let's think about how many cards would, would, you know, how many cards in this deck would put us over? How many cards in the deck would keep us under and all those sorts of things.
Sonny00:24:16And they started, how many ones have you counted? How many zeros have you counted? How many negative ones have you counted?
JVL00:24:21What's the count? What is the count on? The deck? Is it plus three or minus five? Cause that's when you start increasing your bets. Did you, there was a moment splitting and doubling down.
Mike00:24:34So I did not, but there was a moment where like I dealt out, I dealt, I dealt out like two fours or something like that. And I was like, all right, so doubling, hold on. Let me reel that. Let me reel that back in. Let me reel that back in. And this is what to my, to my 11 year old. He was like, he was like, what'd you say? I was like doubling down. It's a thing where you can bet. And he was like, Ooh, betting. And I was like, we're just going to, we're just going to stop.
JVL00:24:58Did you know that you can make money playing this game?
Mike00:25:02Oh, believe me. If I told them that it would, that we would not do anything but play blackjack for like the next three months,
JVL00:25:11you should have your boys. Maybe, maybe this can be a boy scout thing where their troop comes over and you have a casino night. Like everybody gets, you give everybody $20 in change. And you set up a table and maybe two tables. One of which is like a, a 5 cent minimum. The other is a, is a 10 cent minimum. And you just see how everybody makes out for the night. Really teach them about the world.
Mike00:25:39So then, so then I can identify which dads I need to invite over for poker night. Is that, was that your,
JVL00:25:45no, I just think the kids that have, we did a version of that with father Harrison. We had father Harrison over. We like, you know, got like $20 worth of change. We sat around, it was, it was awesome. Yeah. The kids like winning and losing like 50 cents on a hand. If they split, you know, we're a quarter ante and then split tens. And they just like,
Sonny00:26:06Oh,
JVL00:26:07so we do have, we do have like a,
Sonny00:26:09you taught them to split tens against a three.
JVL00:26:14Yes.
Sonny00:26:14No, no, no, no, no. That's not what the book says. That's not what the book says. Don't split tens. No, no,
?00:26:18no, no, no.
JVL00:26:19And then you double down. You split the, look, if you're against a, JV,
Mike00:26:24you want to come play blackjack with me?
JVL00:26:26You're against a three. I don't mind splitting those tens. And then you get dealt an ace. Yeah. And he's still looking at that. So you're sitting on 11. You double down that bitch right there.
Mike00:26:37Before we move on this, all of this puts me in mind. I don't know if we talked about, I don't think we've talked about this on the show, but the first time that I ever played craps, it may be the last time I ever played craps. Do you remember this JVL? So on a cruise ship, on a cruise ship, on a weekly standard cruise, uh, I was 23 baby. And, uh, fast. It was one of those things that no fast. Eddie wasn't there. Um, it was one of those things where like, I was invited on the weekly standard cruise, like very last minute. I think, I think Catherine was like, Hey, you want to come on a cruise? I was like,
Sonny00:27:13sure. Awesome. Can I bring my girlfriend?
Mike00:27:16Uh, she was like, yeah. Uh, and the whole time in the run up to the cruise, you and Vic JVL were just like, uh, you know, oh, craps. You haven't played craps before. You got to play. Okay. And you were like building craps up to the, to, to be the most exciting game. It is. Ever. And like, we're getting on the cruise. You guys are talking about craps. Oh, craps was going to be so much fun. Craps. We're going to play craps. We're like getting through all the stuff. The first night we're going to go down to the casino. We're going to play craps. And you guys are just, you guys are building me up so much. You're like, you're going to have so much fun. It's going to be a great time. You guys are going to, you're gonna have a blast you're gonna have a blast so i go there and i put whatever little money that you know i didn't get paid a lot of money jvl you know i didn't have a bunch of high salaries so so i uh i put down whatever pittance i could on the craps table and i'm like i'm so excited at this moment like this is this is it i'm on this cruise ship i'm working my dream job and i got these these guys that i've been i've been reading them they're telling me they're they're all rubbing my shoulders going you got this you got this and i crap out immediately like and you're out of money totally out of money and like literally on the first roll seven yeah and then and then and i was like they're like that's it and i was like what and i can't remember if it was you or vick you're just like that's how it goes and then you like went back to playing and i was like well i guess i'm gonna go play black jack then because uh i could i got like a dollar left here i can throw it on whatever it was five dollars left uh it was uh it was a it was an experience you know the best thing about those
JVL00:28:59casinos on uh the ships literally zero regulations could they be you there is no nevada gaming authority making sure that they the slots pay out at a certain international laws jbl international laws we're in international
Mike00:29:18waters
JVL00:29:19word vick's theory was that on like on the crafts table early in the cruise they use dice that are favorable to players yeah yeah and then like last night they bring out the loaded dice and it's like yeah we make it all back because everybody's all lubed up and yeah do you remember by the way before
Mike00:29:40you do you remember the guy there was a guy this is on another cruise that i went on but i think he was on some other cruises he's from like here in northern virginia he would go with his wife his wife would be the only one to go to the sessions with the weekly standard riders to hear us yap about whatever his whole purpose there was the casino and he would just like as soon as this casino was open he would like park himself there he was there the whole time he was awesome i went on a cruise me and mccormick just played uh played blackjack with him for like three nights in a row
Sonny00:30:11it was great that's so much fun anyway all right what are the what are the stakes at these tables because i never i was never invited to go on the weekly standard
JVL00:30:18cruise they're all like five dollar tables back then this is all 40 years ago but uh they were five dollar tables yeah which is all i can do i honestly i don't know that i could sit at a ten dollar table even if i could find one i assume ten dollar tables no longer exist in the world very rare very rare to get like spending more than ten dollars like i'll go i'll go break the bank for my arcade machine but for a hand of craps the idea of putting down ten dollars even just seem or for a hand of blackjack like come on yeah i mean i when i was in vegas like
Sonny00:30:54uh this this we're going about to talk about it but then i finding a 15 blackjack table was like
Mike00:31:02yay 15 all right treasure island and and the last time i was the only time i was in vegas which was for uh i was covering trump there uh the only place i could find like a something like 15 table or whatever it was treasure island i could have gone down if you go if you go to like
Sonny00:31:23excalibur or like even the you know harrah's sad places yeah like the further the further like i mean you can find them you just go down the ladder yeah if you go where hobos go anyway um i'm making
Mike00:31:39degenerate gamblers out of my kids um let's move on shall we and let's talk quickly about the box number one at the box office this week wicked for good opening number one at uh impressive 147 million dollars in its opening sunny is that high or low that's a little bit lower than
Sonny00:32:03it's it's high it's it's high for uh for what the like tracking was kind of coming in um but i will say it's it's a little bit under what the uh it's a little bit under what the early numbers on on saturday like friday night saturday morning were suggesting i i had seen 155 first one i think was one i want to say it was 110 or 120 something like that
Mike00:32:33um uh so i mean it it's fine it was 150 i think 150 is opening was was that what the first one
Sonny00:32:40did the first one did the first one opened to no first one opened to 112 oh 112 okay
Mike00:32:46yeah so uh oh sorry 150 was almost what what wicked for good was okay sorry yeah wicked for
Sonny00:32:53good was wicked for good uh was 147 and again like i i had seen 155 so that's it's a little it softened a little bit over the week a little more front loaded um maybe then people thought i'm curious to see what happens the second weekend because wicked played like last year we could play for a long time it did 112 million in its opening weekend and it had like a 4x multiple or something it was it was a it was that was like it was a big open and it held well i am curious to see if this one holds as well because it is the movie's bad it's just it's like i don't know i don't i've never seen the play and you know even people who really love the play always say that the first act is much stronger than the second but the but like the movie itself is just it's not it's not good it's dour it's dark it's like i mean when i say dark i mean it's like darkly lit it's like hard to see it's it's it's not it's just not fun it's not fun like the first one was um which again i didn't love the first one not for me but at least i understood why people liked it this this one i don't know i don't it doesn't it did not work for me on any level and i don't understand how it could work for people question question yeah as someone who
Mike00:34:10knows absolutely nothing about this product this this franchise whatever wicked for good what does that mean this like if like what is for good like i get that it's it's like she's she's gonna end it and she's wicked playoff it's a play on words michael
JVL00:34:30like something is for good meaning like it's done like this forever but for good but it's also for
Mike00:34:36good okay but like is it a reference to a song it's also a reference to like the big song from this from okay that was my that was my question that was my questions
Sonny00:34:44is there a song called for good or i i i said in my review there are no good songs in this movie and a couple of people were like what about for good that's such a good song and i was like i couldn't hum a bar of that song i i like literally do not remember that song from the movie i just watched 12 hours ago like i i don't i don't know what you're talking about uh so it's no hundreds
JVL00:35:05songs what are they popular and uh chance to fly or define gravity rather popular
Mike00:35:14popular is the literally the only one i have any sense of what it is and it's because some in some of my doom scrolling over the last few years i've seen kristin chenoweth singing it and i'm like i
Sonny00:35:26i know what that is i was a little bit surprised when there was a there was a not a surf cover in the first uh wicked movie i was a little bit surprised by that but that was no nobody nobody remembers not a surf's popular no that's that doesn't matter never mind i not a surf i get
Mike00:35:42wasted wasted joke
Sonny00:35:43wasted joke on these philistines the not a not a surf was an alt rock band was a one hit wonder in like 1995 or three or four yeah yeah it's like i like that song you guys seen kristin chenoweth lately no no yikes i don't i don't spend a lot of time uh going to broadway shows jbl that's not my not my uh thing what is what is that
JVL00:36:13in reference to just no i just like i saw her like you know in some wicked promo somewhere and uh like she's just because you're one of these people who just had a ton of work done
Mike00:36:25and it's recognizable yeah so the other thing the other question i have about wicked is to the extent that i am aware of the marketing of this movie it's been these interviews that the two stars are doing and the commentary around those interviews is that they're very weird like the the two stars ariana grande and cynthia riva are very strange and like strange together like so what what what is
Sonny00:36:56that like what am i what is this about there's theater kids man the the whole okay that's
JVL00:37:02all i need to know no though like so ariana grande is a disney kid and cynthia riva is a british right and so she's a b she's more of like a theater diva like she she is a i think has the reputation of being very difficult in the workplace uh but she's got fucking pipes i mean man she can sing you know uh and i don't like ariana grande i i have never been able to shake the ariana grande we saw in that um was it a nickelodeon or what like the dark we we did some documentary about like the sexualization of kids on oh um network yeah it was on nickelodeon it was it was about nickelodeon yeah and like she was she was a nickelodeon kid not a disney kid right i think she became a disney kid i'd have to look at anyway the point is i've never been able to get that out of my head as being just like weird as shit yeah
Mike00:38:12i just i don't know any any other um thoughts on the box office or wicked for good no no
JVL00:38:21how'd fall guy do oh well you mean the running man sorry right sorry
Mike00:38:26good one uh the running man dropped considerably to what 60 uh it dropped to number four it dropped 65 two so five million five and a half million on the second weekend wow yeah uh predator badlands holding i guess a little bit um it's doing better than now you see me now you don't um which dropped almost 60 percent um anyway that's that's what we got all right tell us about the sphere sunny yeah so sunny you're going to tell us all about seeing
Sonny00:39:05the wizard of oz at the sphere it's um i gotta say it's uh it's a wizard of oz at the sphere no wizard of wizard of oz at sphere they don't call it the sphere it's just wizard of oz at sphere it's cleaner um it's uh it's it's a fascinating it is a fascinating thing it's a fascinating thing so like the so the first thing you have to understand about it is that it's not the wizard of oz really it's not it's not the wizard of oz at all the wizard of oz is 107 minute movie that was released by mgm in 1939 and it's you know it starts off kind of sepia tone black and white goes to color uh but it's got all the it's got it's got multiple so this is a 70 minute version of that first of all it's
JVL00:39:55like 70 minutes it's truncated better that way which of us it's cut way down well well but it's
Sonny00:40:00interesting though because you you you don't want you don't want this thing that we are watching to be any longer than that and and what i mean and i like i i'm gonna say a bunch of things that are gonna sound like they're gonna sound like they're gonna sound like they're gonna sound like they're gonna sound very negative and i don't want to sound very negative because i i i actually think it's a really interesting experience but it is a bizarre experience so like the first thing that you the first thing that you you see when you come into the auditorium you know you you have to you have to be seated when the movie starts there's like a countdown outside like doors shut and there's no previews or anything it just it goes so they they want you sit it sit it seated and ready to go when you get there and you sit down there's like a screen there's this brain
JVL00:40:42there's no more in the sphere beforehand because there's no i'd like to see what she looks like
Sonny00:40:47spherized i don't i bet it would be horrifying frankly nobody should be nobody should be seen on the sphere frankly um you don't you don't want that in your head the uh but the but you go in and you sit down and it's like a it's like a movie palace uh type screen right where they've got curtain across and um and and you can see like uh an orchestra pit of seats and one of the people i was we were i was watching it with leaned over and said are those seats real and it's very like this is how good this is how good the resolution on the screen is it is hard to tell where reality stops and the image on the screen yes it's like are those like is it a live orchestra no it's it's not it's not it's not at all it's it's it's it's on the screen it's on the screen you just can't see it you like you you can't you your brain can't quite figure it out and that's that's a fascinating thing and this is this is what um the things that are and this is the distinction i want to make for everybody the things that are made for the sphere are genuine marvels of visual engineering right so like i saw i saw the darren aronofsky movie postcards from earth uh i've seen it twice now actually and it was it was a it's amazing he shot the thing with 16k cameras it like the whole thing is immersive and it it is designed and sounded and everything for the sphere like it is it is truly immersive in a way that i've never really experienced before this is not this is not because it's again it's a movie from 1939 it was shot on regular film stock you know 35 millimeter or whatever uh they they still have the the the negative somewhere i'm sure it's in very good very good shape but the but you know it's it's a it's a film that was shot on film stock so there are inherent limitations to it and there are other inherent limitations to it which is that it was shot in academy ratio right it's shot in four by three it was not shot widescreen so there's there's an even more limited amount of information right in the big box so what they have done and this is the only way i can describe it that will make it make sense it's i don't think it's technically what they did but it's it's functionally what they did they have rotoscoped out all of the actors they have they've essentially cut out the actors and they have placed them in front of a newly created digital background and so what you have is you have information from 1939 that has been run through it has been upscaled and run through ai programs to within an inch of
JVL00:43:49its celluloid life you're talking about the background or the no no wait wait no the actors
Sonny00:43:55the actual people the actual people they have been cut out and they have been upscaled and they have been and your little dog too they have been made they've been made to look like horrifying wax figurines basically like all of the all of the life
JVL00:44:11is nightmares
Sonny00:44:12drained from their face it's it's it's it's like it's actually it is this is this is especially bad in the sepia tone sequences I would assume because they have less visual information to work with right it's kind of black and white and um and then they have taken those figures and they have they have grafted them on to a newly created digital background that is 16k 18k native and so it looks amazing it looks the backgrounds of all these shots looks looks amazing and this is especially true once you get to the land of Oz and you're you're seeing it in color and you see like they newly
JVL00:44:54created you mean out of whole cloth I mean
Sonny00:44:58they I mean they have their they they must have had artists digitally create new backgrounds entirely new backgrounds at 16k resolution based on based on what we saw on the film in the film I mean there is some there's still some original backgrounds and they do they like extend the sequence you know they expand the shots so you see more and that that stuff's all created but a lot of it is just I would I would be willing to bet a not insubstantial part portion of the backgrounds of these sequences are fully newly created just like brand new visual imagery and those are again those are made with somebody somebody's working on somebody has put together a 16k digital file that the the the inhuman monstrosities that have been upscaled are then kind of inserted in front of so it's like you have it's like you have all of the the actors in this movie working against the most amazing green screen ever created except because they look old and terrible and upscaled it's it's there's there's just a weird parallax thing going on where things are happening and it nothing looks like it's in the same place now I say all this and it sounds very negative and I don't
JVL00:46:39yeah yeah is are you is what you are seeing only in front of you or does it wrap all the way behind you and above you
Sonny00:46:48so basically so all right so you're inside the sphere right and you're sitting you know you're basically there's a big stadium seating right so the stadium seating takes up you know let's say 90 degrees or so of the screen
Guest00:47:03I
Sonny00:47:05don't know what the rate the full range of coverage is but it goes up above your head and it goes out to the sides you can look up and see blank spaces on the screen okay like you can see where it stops if you like look up and around but it it's pretty pretty immersive coverage if you turn to the
JVL00:47:24side can you still see screen
Sonny00:47:26yes unless you turn like way to the side you know okay you know what I mean question
Mike00:47:33are the characters generally in the front of
Sonny00:47:40your field of vision they're always like right in the front they're always they're always right in the front and they're usually like down towards the bottom too so there's lots of open space there's like somebody jokes you know when the first previews of this thing where it was happening like I'm sure Victor Fleming really planned on having eight eighty percent of the screen be negative space for this for this for the sky of
Mike00:48:03Oz the cornfields of Oz or whatever yeah
Sonny00:48:06but it but it like it it's I mean it basically works it basically works because you're just of like again it's it's meant to be kind of immersive and rapid you the way where you are sitting where you're looking it makes sense for them to be there even if there is lots of open negative space the the the stuff that is on the screen of course is only like half of the half of the story though because you know the the whole thing about the sphere is that it is it is like 4D it's like the most impressive 4DX system you've ever been in like the seats all have like rumbling haptics and you know they're
JVL00:48:44misters and wind the wind and there's yeah there's
Sonny00:48:48there's wind and they have smell generators and you know it like it the whole thing at one point in the in the show which was I was kind of they had a you know you know the you know the scene in the Wizard of Oz where they go into the forest and the apple trees are throwing apples apples fell out of the sky onto us in the in the thing well not real apples they're like little little you know foam apples that are branded Wizard of Oz they're like little tchotchkes they're keepsakes to take home you get to keep them that's what your that's what your $200 ticket is paying for and that's the other thing is that again the tickets for this thing are $200 like there's not capacity I look this up and I forget what it is but it's for so the for the movies they the movies have a smaller seating capacity than the concerts for the concerts they open up the whole thing like it's you know for the for the movies you're only in like the three middle sections but I want to say it was I want to say it's I'll effort this in a second
Mike00:49:59how many showings a day one
Sonny00:50:01and they do know they do three showings a day so I mean this this they're they're making they're making like I they're making some insane amount of money it was it was
JVL00:50:12hold on let me actually I'm looking up you keep
Sonny00:50:14talking yeah look up look up Lucas Shaw Lucas Shaw wrote a piece about this Lucas Shaw sphere daily gross or something he there that should be like the first Bloomberg thing that pops up but but he but it's it is like it's a mint they're just they're just generating tons and tons of money on this thing who knows what they they spent upgrading it question yeah
Mike00:50:39at the risk of spoiling this
JVL00:50:425000 seats for Wizard of Oz 20,000 for everything else for like concerts
Sonny00:50:50okay yeah that makes that that sounds about right so 5000 seats and they were it was probably 95% full when we went and you know we went on a random Friday so it was it wasn't it wasn't it wasn't the slowest day of the week probably but but it also probably wasn't even as
JVL00:51:08million dollars per showing basically at $200 a pop yeah million
Sonny00:51:14bucks that's amazing for showing can you imagine that's anyway it's a it's a it's it's a really it's it's I had a question I had
Mike00:51:24a question yeah on the on the plot on what is cut out of this movie and at the risk of spoiling it for the people who are going to go see anything
Sonny00:51:33anything that involves Dorothy and her friends walking from place to place was gone they basically just cut from like song to song action beat to action beat like any any like plot element that they need to keep the story moving they just cut straight to it there was no there was no wandering around there was probably better that way again
JVL00:51:54that is a padded movie
Sonny00:51:55it's it's it it I'll say I didn't I didn't miss a lot was a lot of what was cut I don't know it's like I don't agree with that
JVL00:52:05I think it's I think it's at least 30 minutes too long
Sonny00:52:08all right all right all right but it's a it was it was a it's a really interesting experience and the whole thing is is it's I find the sphere to be a real technological accomplishment and I think if they are showing things that are made for the sphere or if they're showing concerts right like I like I it's a great concert venue it's I heard the UFC fight there was amazing like the UFC fight they had like haptics in the seat so when the guy got hit you really felt it it really rustled your jimmies you know but but this this thing is such a weird hybrid beast that I don't know what I I would be really curious to know what the polling looks like of people who went to go see this and weren't everyone everyone in the theater seemed to really love it lots of clapping afterward people were wooing and eyeing the whole time I found it so weirdly disconcerting while also being like fairly enraptured by it I don't know it's such it's such a bizarre thing I don't know how to describe it I feel like that
Mike00:53:28that sums up Las Vegas in general it is
Sonny00:53:32and it is like the apotheosis of Las Vegas because it is this ridiculous human technological it's like the Death Star just put on the Las Vegas strip and they're massacring a classic piece of Americana just like strip mining it for profit in the most grotesque way imaginable and yet it's still pretty entertaining and they're making
Mike00:53:59money end of her fist
Sonny00:54:01it wasn't not fun I didn't even mind that I was spending $7 on the Red Bull I bought there it was fine
JVL00:54:10question so the closest thing I can think of to this is the advent of IMAX I remember when IMAX first happened and I was a kid and there were only like two IMAX theaters in the country I think at that point the first one was at the Smithsonian maybe I'm wrong about this Tony will correct me and you went and what they had were these 20 minute movies and they were about things like flight or hang gliding or Grand Canyon and you sat there and everybody was like oh my god I feel like I'm actually flying oh I got dizzy when they were swooping over the Grand Canyon this is the most amazing technical marvel and is that what the sphere is or is it too expensive to ever be recreated and so it's just a one off
Sonny00:55:09you cannot build this thing in more than like you could probably build one in Dubai you could probably build one in like
JVL00:55:20it's probably weather dependent because of the exterior screens
Sonny00:55:23probably it actually might not work because of sand well I don't know
JVL00:55:29Dubai is probably a place that it might work
Sonny00:55:32yeah yeah anyway the thing costs like 1.8 billion dollars or something it's an insanely expensive venue you could not it would have to be the sort of place where you are comparing the experience of going to it like you do compare the cost of a ticket to a Cirque du Soleil show that's the comp here the comp is not the local AMC it's not the local IMAX what's interesting there is this there's this thing called the Cosm the C-O-S-M and there's two of them there's one in Dallas actually it's not quite it's not in Dallas proper it's this suburb up north called the Colony but I have not actually been there I've not actually been there but they've been showing the Matrix in this thing and they it's like I would assume it's probably whatever the IMAX format was but it's like with your video game arcade JVL like they have when he goes into the room with all the guns and the guns come it's not just the stuff on the screen there's like surrounding imagery that's also like more racks of guns go shooting by right like or the the code the computer code is coming down it's kind of surrounds the screen it's it's it's a little bit like that you it's again it's that's like a that's like a baby version of the sphere right and that and that and that venue is designed more for live sports like they people go and they watch they watch a soccer game or a football game there and it's like you're in the it's like you're on the field of play basically that's how that that thing is supposed to be used I just don't I like I don't think you could have this I don't think this I don't think the sphere is financially viable anywhere outside of Las Vegas in the United States I just can't I there's nowhere I could imagine it working two more questions even even like New York or L.A. I don't know
Mike00:57:43can I please before you before you ask your questions I'm just a quick fact check the very first dedicated IMAX dome theater the Fleet Science Center in San Diego no kidding so here we go
JVL00:57:58so at Jerry World the Dallas Cowboy Stadium when they built that Jumbotron which I think is the largest Jumbotron in the world the first thing they did this may be apocryphal was but was to play Madden on it they fired up the PS4 and played Madden on it and do we think somebody has tried to do a video game on the sphere
Sonny00:58:29has somebody played somebody played God of War 100% God of War and the other thing is porn
JVL00:58:36I assume somebody has tried to put porn in the sphere and somebody has tried like this is the human mind which could build the sphere would of course do porn and video games on the sphere
Mike00:58:48100% it's not a great commentary on us as humans but there we are I mean it just makes sense
Sonny00:58:57so I've now seen these two movies there
Mike00:59:02you've been to the sphere a lot
Sonny00:59:04I've been to the sphere three times that's more than most people have ever been that's more than most people have been to the sphere think about that think about that it's like three Apple TVs
JVL00:59:18I
Sonny00:59:19so I I really dig the sphere I I think the sphere is a really interesting thing I'm pro sphere I'm not sure that I'm pro sphere for this sort of thing but of course this sort of thing is the only thing that is financially viable on the sphere because what do they always say you need to sell a movie you need pre-awareness and what has better pre-awareness than the classics of the library of Warner Brothers I mean I'm excited
Mike00:59:51it's FGM well
Sonny00:59:54but Warner Brothers owns the MGM library got it but the I can't wait for like the 70 minute version of Gone with the Wind that would be the only version of Gone with the Wind that I could probably stand to watch the immersive here's my final question
JVL01:00:15final question if you guys could each choose to have a spherized version of one movie what would you what would you ask for that's a tough one so you can ask Jimmy Dolan to make a spherized version of any movie in the world for you it doesn't have to be like a truncated like you know again this is done bespoke so if you say I want the full thing I want all two hours and ten minutes of it Jimmy's gonna say yes I'll do it
Mike01:00:49it might have to be it's either Star Wars or or I was gonna say Indiana Jones but I feel like I got that experience at the uh Indiana Jones stunt experience at Disney World um I don't know it's gotta right it's gotta be something with action right so like Star Wars is what comes to mind
Sonny01:01:16first yeah the answer is Dirty Harry and I want every time Dirty Harry fires his gun I want the air cannon blowing the I want the I want the air cannon blowing his uh the the you know the exhaust for I wouldn't even call that the recoil whatever I want to feel the bullets whizzing past my face
Mike01:01:35you want to be able to count whether it was six or seven um are you serious Sonny
JVL01:01:42that's uh no I don't
Sonny01:01:44know I I thought that was a funny answer I don't know I don't know uh I what would it be uh it would probably be I mean I would kind of like to see the Matrix in the Matrix would be cool version of the Matrix would be amazing
JVL01:01:57what's that exactly Barry Lyndon ordinary people
Sonny01:02:03I almost said eyes wide shut for my funny answer because eyes wide shut just got the uh 4k treatment from Criterion
Mike01:02:09I feel like if I were to take some drugs that like something like Lawrence of Arabia could be like something enjoyable on the sphere
Sonny01:02:20yeah
Mike01:02:232001 is another
Sonny01:02:252001 on the sphere
Mike01:02:28no oh I got it Wizard of Oz with Dark Side of the Moon playing and synced up at the same time you know about that right Return to Oz
Sonny01:02:40all the momby heads

Sonny01:02:50JBL what do you pick
JVL01:02:51what's your pick I don't know I mean it might well be New Hope I mean just the idea of what I'm just thinking of the opening scene where the star having the Star Destroyer come from literally overhead right like and with the Starfield would be all around you and first the Tantive 4 would come over you and it's small and then the Star Destroyer which would take up the entire sphere because it I mean that would be amazing I'm sorry I'm going to need a cold shower just thinking about that
Mike01:03:34It also seems like that is the best that is the best chance of happening right like there's got to be like a public interest in it right
Sonny01:03:48what's going to there's going to be there's going to well I don't know maybe it won't ever happen because it's too hard to do in 3D but there eventually James Cameron will do an avatar for the sphere he'll do like a 40 minute sphere avatar
Mike01:04:06great that's great actually what I'm imagining is the is the Revenge of the Sith show that Palpatine and Anakin are watching you know at the sphere
Sonny01:04:21you know
Mike01:04:22which is like it's like sexual intercourse happening in front of them
JVL01:04:29in the sphere they're at the Coruscant version of the sphere certain abilities
Mike01:04:36that would seem
Sonny01:04:37it would also be well served to be something that like so the best sequence in the Wizard of Oz thing is when Dorothy's in the tornado and like that feels like you're inside the tornado I mean it really does there's tons of wind and it's all blowing around and leaves are like they have real leaves flying around and you know it's like it's very immersive you could do like if you did like a twister or a towering inferno could you imagine disaster movies
Mike01:05:07like disaster movies
Sonny01:05:09or backdraft you could do like you know cliffhanger
JVL01:05:15oh cliffhanger there we go daylight vertigo yes totally
Sonny01:05:22what's the Sylvester Stallone in the tunnel movies yeah daylight
Mike01:05:27not over the top
Sonny01:05:30if you had something with like a lot of like elemental stuff I think that would be good you know or that Everest movie they could blow freezing cold air on you for 90 minutes
JVL01:05:42K2 Peter Coyote alright
Mike01:05:47tell us what you want to see on the sphere in the comments thank you so much for listening to us this is coming out the day after Thanksgiving hope everybody listening has a fine and wonderful and restful Thanksgiving join us over at subbeacon.com tell us hello on Instagram at subbeacon and we'll talk to you next time
Sonny01:06:21yeah well
Mike01:06:22I just keep thinking of Boogie Nights yeah there we go
JVL01:06:30that's what I want to say
Mike01:06:31in Star Wars the end where he's running you know doing the run through to shoot into the trench to the trench that would be like seeing it on VHS which is how I first saw Star Wars as a kid like that whole sequence was like living in my head for months afterward like just imagine what that would be like as a kid
JVL01:06:57to see that. Sonny just as a technical question does 16k offer the possibility of glasses less 3D
Sonny01:07:05I so I think it has to be pretty close I was wondering the same thing I would again I would I would love for I would love for well because the thing about 3D right is not 3D is not interesting when it's stuff coming into you 3D is interesting when it creates depth of field within within the image right it's not the stick of having like somebody shoots an arrow and it goes by your share whoa that's dumb but like the the creating creating the depth of field within the image itself is the trick that's what that's what Cameron has mastered and what he you know that's why that's why the Avatar movies look so good in 3D and I do think you could probably get pretty close to to a version of that if you shot native 16k and if you had somebody who understood how that should look but still even then maybe not honestly I don't know enough about the technology how many K's
JVL01:08:12do we need
Sonny01:08:13well it's not but it's not a function of K's right it's not it's not it's it's not that's not the issue it's created it's again creating that that it's it's simulating an actual depth of field where you have something closer at the front of the screen and further back I don't know I but I don't know I honestly don't know it's all it's all magic to me I don't know
Mike01:08:37I'm sure it's fine
