#276. No Episode This Week!

Listen to this episode ↗on Substack, where the show lives now

There's no real episode this week — Mike was traveling for work and Sonny was in Austin for a wedding, so instead of a full show Sonny records a short solo bonus ramble in place of the usual trio banter. Most of it is one shaggy-dog story: having forgotten his deodorant, Sonny Googled the nearest pharmacy and landed at Austin's People's Pharmacy, which stocked exactly two options — a $14 spray bottle he balked at and a colloidal-silver stick, which he wore to the wedding and reports worked fine (no patchouli, no hippie funk). The wedding itself was held in the old Alamo Drafthouse headquarters building, still owned by founders Tim and Carrie League, and Sonny geeks out at length over the space: Mondo posters lining every wall, lockers stuffed with old physical issues of the Birth.Movies.Death magazine and plushy film-reel tchotchkes, a climate-controlled room housing the American Genre Film Archive's 35mm prints, a guitar school, and DCPs of a decade's worth of Alamo pre-roll reels. The prop presidential desk from Idiocracy also lives there, and it's where Sonny's friend signed his marriage license; Sonny's groomsman gift was his first bolo tie, fittingly topped with a death's-head moth. He signs off with a bit claiming the real reason there's no episode isn't scheduling at all but a principled one-week boycott of David Zaslav for declining to give Clint Eastwood's Juror #2 a wide theatrical release.

From the show notes

Sorry, we were going to try and get something together, but travel and work and personal lives all conspired to keep us apart. But I do have one fun short story from Austin. Kind of fun. Fun-ish. At least to me. The image up top will make more sense once you listen!

Sonny00:00:00Hey, everybody. It's Sonny here. Just as a heads up, we don't have an episode this week. We thought we were going to be able to get one together and it just didn't work out. Too much travel this week. Mike was all over the country. I was in Austin for a wedding. It was kind of, it was pretty, most Austin story ever. I'll just do one quick weekend update bit for, to say to you until next week. But the, so I was in Austin for a wedding. I was helping with setup and everything. I figured I should get some, I forgot my deodorant, you know, I forgot my deodorant. So I Googled, you know, what's the, what's the closest pharmacy to where we were setting up, which is a very cool space. I'll talk about that in a second. But the, but the, the closest pharmacy was the People's Pharmacy in Austin, Texas. And I was like, well, this is too good not to, too good not to check out. So I walk in and I'm like, hey, do you have any, I walk in and I look kind of confused. And the lady's like, hey, can we help you? I was like, yeah, I need some deodorant. I need some deodorant. She's like, oh yeah, we've got deodorant over here. Come here and I'll show you. And it was, I swear to God, the only deodorant they had in the place. They had two, they had two kinds. They had one that was like $14 for this tiny little spray bottle. And I was like, I'm not buying that. And then they had another one that was using the power of natural ingredients and colloidal silver. So colloidal silver is what kept me from smelling at this wedding. It seemed to work fine. I don't think I, I didn't smell like patchouli. I didn't smell like, you know, I didn't smell like hippie. It seemed, it seemed to be okay. The wedding itself was very fun, though. We were in the space that we were in was the, the Alamo Drafthouse headquarters. I don't know exactly what their corporate structure is right now. You know, Alamo got sold to, well, first got sold to a private equity company. The private equity company sold it to Sony. But this building that we were in is owned by Tim League and Carrie League, you know, the founders, the previous owners, founders of the Alamo Drafthouse. And it is still, I think, where the Alamo Drafthouse is. And there's all sorts of cool Mondo stuff. You know, so, you know, the big, the poster company Mondo, they used to be owned by Alamo. There's lots of, there's lots of, you know, interesting detritus, cultural detritus kind of hanging around there. But just all sorts of cool stuff. Like, for instance, one thing they had was the president's desk from Idiocracy was they just like a prop, you know, Mike Judge lives in Austin or lived in Austin. I don't know if he still lives there, but he's from Austin. And the the desk from Idiocracy that the president with like the all the, you know, funny corporate branding on it is is in the space. That's where my friend who was getting married signed his marriage license on the on the president's desk. But the walls all have all the old Mondo posters, you know, like you could do it. You do a heist movie about somebody just breaking in there and stealing all the stuff off the walls. You'd make a ton of money if you just did that. It's my my retirement plan is to break into the Mondo headquarters and steal all their stuff. But it was yeah, it was a cool space. It was it was very there were all these it's so it's in an old school. I'm sorry, I'm rambling about this this this wedding venue, but it was it was pretty neat. So it's it's in an old school and like all the rooms are, you know, kind of set up for different things. The the what is it? The film genre archives, the American film genre archives are there and like a climate controlled room. Just, you know, all the old thirty five millimeter. Prints that they have. And then there's like a guitar school there. But the the the walls were lined with lockers. They're lined with lockers, you know, because, again, it was an old school. And in the lockers, they had all sorts of like, again, random Mondo things. Now, some of them were like hard copies of the magazine version of Birth Movies Death, the now defunct Mondo backed website. But like the actual physical magazines that they. Put out for a couple of years, like dozens and dozens of copies of those. There was there was a there was one locker that was full of these like plushy film reel things. My wife was like, we could just take one. No, we can't take one. We can't take one. It's not it's not right. That's stealing. It's not for us. But those those were funny and cool. And, you know, if you're into that nerdy sort of thing, the the there was one of the lockers we opened up and it was just like DCP. So. So like digital cinema packages are what DCPs are. That's like what you send to a theater to play a thing. But like if you've ever been to an Alamo draft house, you know, they do the pre-rolls before the movies. Right. They do like national pre-rolls. They put together little clips for all the movies that are coming out and little montages and they send them to the theaters. And that's what plays before instead of, you know, standard ads or, you know, whatever. It's like clips from old movies, old interviews, et cetera, et cetera. But they had the DCPs for. Like 10 years of Mondo or 10 years of Alamo draft house pre-rolls. It was crazy. Like I don't even know. I don't even know what the movies were for. It was just like July 20, you know, 18 national DCP. It was crazy. Anyway, lots of lots of cool stuff in there. The wedding itself was fun. I was in the wedding. Groomsman gift was my first bolo tie. I shall treasure it always. It's like it is not specific. Specifically a Silence of the Lambs bolo tie, but it is a bolo tie where the little, you know, metal thing at the top is the death's head moth. So, you know, it fits with my fits with my general interests. In addition to being very stylish. Anyway, it was fun. So sorry. Again, no episode this week. You get a little bonus ramble from me, but that's that's going to be it. We'll be back next week. Hopefully I consider actually. No, I take it back. It wasn't because we were too busy. We're taking. We got in protest of David Zasloff not doing the right thing and putting Clint Eastwood's latest movie in 3000 theaters. If this if the jury number two had been in 3000 theaters, we would have an episode this week, but he is screwing Clint. So we're sitting a week out in protest. It's, you know, it's very principled. Not that we were too busy. So, you know, just think about that. Think about that. Anyway, I hope you guys have a good week. We'll be back next week with another episode of the sub beacon. hopefully we'll see you guys then
