#150. 'Violent Night'

2022-12-16 · 1:02:42

Listen to this episode ↗on Substack, where the show lives now

The main event is Violent Night (2022), the David Harbour Santa-does-Die Hard action comedy also starring John Leguizamo as the leader of a mercenary crew invading a wealthy family's compound; Sonny calls it a "definitional B-minus, two-and-a-half-star, it's okay" movie with no great jokes and no great performances and none of the action panache of Bullet Train or John Wick, comparing it unfavorably to the far better Fat Man. JVL agrees the script needed several more passes, though he singles out the dysfunctional rich family as the film's best element, calling it "a homeless man's Arrested Development." Vic runs his Quadrants — Plot A, Duration B, Violence/Action A++ — for an overall B-minus, praising David Harbour (who reminds him of Hopper from Stranger Things) while knocking the movie for being embarrassingly identical to Die Hard, down to a Die Hard 2-style twist where the rescue team turns out to be in on it. Woven through all of this is a much bigger story: this is Vic's last episode after more than six years on the show, and midway through he reads a prepared farewell statement — heckled mercilessly by Sonny and JVL the whole way — about moving on to other things. The long opening stretch covers Vic's lament over his Chopped salad kiosk going full-automat, JVL's ode to an ancient Sicilian "Mama" who tallies restaurant bills from memory for cash-paying regulars, a Swingers rewatch, Sonny's alarmingly low 46 bpm resting heart rate, box office numbers (Wakanda Forever, Violent Night, Strange World), an extended preview of Avatar: The Way of Water and its high-frame-rate 3D presentation, and the Cocaine Bear trailer. The episode closes with Vic reflecting on his six years on the show — naming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood the best movie of his run and rattling off a top-five-worst list (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, The Eternals, The Beach Bum, High Flying Bird, and a fake-out jab at Widows) — before a goodbye that keeps getting derailed by Sonny and JVL's bits about never letting him leave.

From the show notes

It's a show alright. Hope you enjoy it!

Guest00:00:41- Who the hell are you?
Vic00:00:52- Hello and welcome to another edition of The Sub-Beacon. I'm Victor Matus along with Sonny Bunch and Jonathan V. Last. Just a reminder, The Sub-Beacon is available on Patreon. Go to subbeacon.com, you'll easily find us. Please subscribe, tell your friends. Don't forget about the Sub-Beacon merchandise store at tpublic.com. The holidays are now here. I usually joke about the tpublic.com royalty checks. And the big news is I always make a joke about spending it at Chopped. Chopped went under a renovation and when it reopened next door, for some reason, I don't know why, what happened in the space where it was, it's all kiosks now.
Sonny00:01:35It's all just automated.
Vic00:01:36You press a button, you no longer talk to humans.
Sonny00:01:39Well, that's better. I mean, that's a huge improvement.
JVL00:01:42Is it still Chopped or is it different?
Vic00:01:45It's Chopped. It is Chopped. So, you know, that whole model, which I can't remember who invented that first. Maybe it was...
Sonny00:01:53It's basically Chipotle. Chipotle. Yeah, right?
Vic00:01:57Yeah. You tell them what to do and you walk yourself down the line. Sweetgreen does that. Cava. Yeah, so everywhere. Pandex Press. So Chopped is now moved beyond that and it's like when you walk into a McDonald's, you just press the buttons and then they give you your thing.
JVL00:02:15Do people do it or is it robots who do it? Because there was a place on K Street for a while where there were no people anywhere in it and you had to order your food on your phone ahead of time and when you got there, it was like an automat. It would tell you your food is in cubicle B8 and you'd walk up to B8 and the door would slide open and you would bring your food out and the food was made by robots supposedly.
Vic00:02:43That's really disturbing. And I just made a joke about it. I said that, you know, I get the sort of kiosk thing, but I said it's not an automat. I said I think humans still do it. So in any event, but I did make an automat reference. I still think the humans do it.
JVL00:03:01Can you see the humans?
Vic00:03:03I've only been told this. I refuse to walk in since they changed it.
Sonny00:03:08You haven't actually experienced it. I haven't had any roughage. I haven't had any roughage in the last two weeks. You've just been downing cookies. I haven't even gone to the bathroom in the last two weeks. You've been opening up nut or butter bars.
Vic00:03:22Because it's either all or nothing, you know. And Sweetgreen, I'm not paying 20 bucks. I'm paying 20 bucks for a salad. Okay. Gentlemen, how are we? JVL, what's going on?
JVL00:03:34So I'm at my favorite local pizza place, which is a pizza place, but it's also an Italian restaurant. It's a little bit of an institution. Oh, wait a minute.
Vic00:03:46Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Hold on. Hold on.
JVL00:03:50In Belmar or up by where you are now?
Vic00:03:51Up by me.
JVL00:03:52So you have a new favorite place up by you. That's good. Yeah, I've got a place up by me. Five pizza joints just on Main Street. That's a very Jersey thing, by the way. It's such a Jersey thing. And this one is my favorite. And it's like noticeably better. They're all pretty good. Like every single one of these would be the best pizza place in Northern Virginia.
Vic00:04:13Oh, yeah. Oh, the line would be out there because all we do is search for authenticity around here. Yeah.
JVL00:04:18Yeah. So I go into this place the other night and it is run and owned. I don't know how to describe them except to say that they are these two Sicilian hobbits. I'm in. And they are they're a couple. So far as I can tell, they are somewhere around 87 years old. They cannot be taller than five foot one. Both of them very round. When they speak to each other, they do not speak in English. They speak English. They, you know, they'll talk to. They'll talk to you. Talk to you and me about what you want to order. Right. But when you so when you order your pizza and you call, they just they just sound like these these newfangled places where they put your, you know, they know what your phone number is already and all that. They just say, yeah, your number is 19. And when you you go to pick it up, they have literally, you know, those black and white marbled, you know, binder books that everybody have. Yeah. You mean like in seven? Yeah.
Vic00:05:27Yeah.
JVL00:05:28They just have one of those. And the orders are written down with numbers next to them. And so you walk in and say, I'm, you know, I'm number 19. And they say, oh, yeah, you got the two large cheese pies.
Vic00:05:39It's the same ledger that Al Capone used. You know, that's what you're saying. Okay, great. I'm in there the other night.
JVL00:05:45And there's a dining room attached to this because they don't just do pizza. It's like a little Italian restaurant. And it's weirdly enough on a Saturday night, it is hard to get in. Everybody goes there. So I'm waiting for my pizza and I watch a string of people leaving the dining room. They are finishing dinner and they come up to the register and they say to Mama, which is what everybody calls her. I don't know her name. So evidently what happens is you don't get a bill in the dining room. You have a waitress and the waitress takes your order and she brings you your food. But then when you're done. You walk up to Mama and you just tell Mama what everybody at your table had. That's amazing. And Mama does not type things into their cash register. Mama just listens to what you have said and then says a number. Okay, stop right now.
Vic00:06:39Stop right now. Do they accept credit cards?
JVL00:06:43So and this is the final piece of it. They accept credit cards. But as I am sitting there on Saturday night waiting for my pizza, I watch a dozen people leaving the dining room. Every single one of them follows us. They walk up. Hey Mama, I had the mussels and the chicken parm and then we had two Diet Cokes. And she would say, "It's 37.45." And every single one of these people would reach in their pockets and pull out a roll of 20s and just peel them off and hand them to her. I have not carried cash on me in a decade.
Sonny00:07:16So you – what you have – you have stumbled into the Vesuvios of – you don't understand. You don't understand this reference because you didn't watch the Sopranos.
Vic00:07:25Oh, Vesuvios was the pizza place or is that – that's not the –
Sonny00:07:29No, it's like the – it's the fancy restaurant. Oh, right. Oh, yeah.
Vic00:07:32Oh, yeah. That's right. I'm sorry. I totally forgot the name. Yeah, that's right. Vesuvios.
JVL00:07:38That's right. That's what you stumbled on. It's just – it was fascinating. I mean – Artie Bucco's place. I do not believe that Mama is doing math in her head. I think she just knows what she charges different people and everybody seems to know her and she knows the like Richie. Richie, you charge Richie like 40 bucks.
Sonny00:07:55No, I think she – I think that she has an internal calculator that has been precisely attuned to like 20 items and she can do the math instantly in her head. I used to be able to do the math instantly in my head when I worked at a McDonald's. It's not hard. It's just when –
JVL00:08:10She's not doing the math with tax, is she?
Sonny00:08:12Well, if they're paying in cash. It's fine. It's fine. No, that's – So wait. Do the people then get – do the people then get changed and then go back to their table and leave tips and then leave? How does that work?
JVL00:08:24No. No, they leave.
Sonny00:08:26Is there like a tip jar?
JVL00:08:28So, no. I assume they have left cash at the table.
Sonny00:08:32Are there waiters or is it like do you go up to a bar and get your food and take it back?
JVL00:08:36No, there's like a waitress but the waitress is not just a waitress. She also sort of works in the kitchen. It's all very close together. It's a very – I feel like when I'm there, I feel like I am in a foreign country where there are very – like you've gone to Tokyo and like they've got the card ceremony where they present you their business card. It's this highly regimented thing except that I have shown up here. I have been dropped in in media race and I have no idea what any of the mores and rules and customs are. I would – And I feel bad already just paying with a credit card. So, they accepted your credit card? That must have been very – They accept my credit card. Do they have like a – Every time I go there, I pay in credit card.
Sonny00:09:18Do they have like a square machine or is it one of the old school – Like they put it down. Please. They run it.
JVL00:09:24They run it over the like carbon paper. No. So, it's not a run it. It's not square but it's like a little terminal. They swipe it down across. And my view is – look, I understand. Small businesses, especially American Express. American Express fucks you on every transaction. Yeah. That's right. And I feel for that. I don't want to carry cash around. I don't want to do it. Of course. And so, I want small businesses to charge me whatever they need to in order to be made themselves whole. I don't begrudge them that. If they have to charge me an extra 3%. An extra 3% to cover their costs from American Express, please, go ahead. I don't – I'm not broke up about that. I fully accept that. Jamie, now that you're back in New Jersey.
Vic00:09:59That's great. I do not care about cash. Now that you're back in New Jersey, this should be your like New Year's resolution. A wad of cash. You know?
Sonny00:10:07You got to get – On the outside.
Vic00:10:09You got to invest in some rubber bands. You know, they got to fix on the outside.
?00:10:11The whole thing.
Vic00:10:12You know? Make sure that you just peel it off. I would order so much food just for mama to say, "Okay, you owe $69.69." Oh. That's right. I'm going to buy you a money clip.
Sonny00:10:22That would be like the veal.
Vic00:10:23Ossobuco.
Sonny00:10:24I'm going to send you a money clip. Yes. JBL. And you can use that.
Vic00:10:28That'll be great. Money clips are great.
Sonny00:10:30I think you whip that out. You whip out that money clip. You're in. Don't you – you have to carry cash when you go to Vegas, right? You got to – I got a money clip. I just like – it's funny. I was watching –
JVL00:10:38I haven't been to Vegas in a decade.
Sonny00:10:39I was watching Swingers last weekend with Beth. We just threw it on, you know, because it was late at night and we needed something to watch. It was like 95 minutes long. And the best sequence in that film – look, the best sequence in that film is when they go to Vegas but it's not because it's like, "Vegas, baby, Vegas." It's because it's how awkward they are at the tables when they get there. Oh, it's a great scene. Like, it is – it's the perfect representation of the person who has never been to Vegas before and is trying to act like a big shot and, you know, he's trying to, like, hand the dealer $100 in cash and the dealer's like, "You got to put it on the table, sir." And he's like, "I don't – I don't want to bet it all at once." Because that's exactly – literally exactly how I felt the first time I went to Vegas. I was like, "I don't want to bet all this. I just want chips to make my bets."
Vic00:11:22And then they appropriately end up at the $5 minimum table with the old lady who's, like, hitting on – That's where you always end up. The old lady gets comped. Yeah. That's where you always end up. That's right. No, I tell you, that's a very intimidating thing in Vegas, particularly – and JVL can remember this with craps – like, when – if you've never played before, if you've never played before, when do you enter in? And some people will just jump in all the time. Everybody's different. But if you've never played before, it's very intimidating. Right, JVL?
JVL00:11:53Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Now, you got to watch for, like, weeks before you're ready to actually play craps.
Sonny00:11:58Yeah. I've literally – I have literally only ever played craps with Vic Matus, I think. I don't do it. I don't do it.
Vic00:12:08Was it like a switchboard? I don't do it. Was it like air traffic control, Sonny?
Sonny00:12:11What else? Oh, it's like an octopus. It's like an octopus at the voice phone telephone. Yes, that's right. Telephone operator board.
Vic00:12:20You're like –
Sonny00:12:21That's right. That's right.
Vic00:12:23That's right. That's you. It's like a Looney Tunes cartoon. One other thought, JVL, on the Italian restaurants. It's funny because every time if I'm talking to my sister or going up for the holidays, going to see my sister, she's like, "Oh, well, there's this new Italian place that just opened up. Oh, we just – we found this new great place." Every time I'm talking to her, there is a new place. Like, where are they going? They're all filling – there's like – you think that there's no more space in town and yet, as you mentioned, if you haven't been to the state, it's really tricky. It's the best. It's really true. They're everywhere. Every few blocks.
JVL00:12:51I was in a place last week, Vic, and I – one of the specials, I thought of you, was the Ossobuco. Oh, my gosh. Do you remember the Ossobuco? I'm so jealous. Do you remember the Ossobuco?
Vic00:13:02Yes. Yes, I do. Are you thinking about – okay, let's think about this. The Ossobuco at where? Where? Where? Is this Ossobuco – The Ossobuco we used to discuss. Oh, right. That's right. That's a big one. That's a Ossobuco. That's a big one. Okay. Sink your teeth into that. Okay.
Sonny00:13:24Sonny, what's going on? I have no idea what that was all about. I watched all – I watched all your signals back and forth. I have no idea what you guys are talking about.
JVL00:13:29It's a thing we used to talk about back in the workplace in '98, '99. She's probably 50 now.
Vic00:13:37Okay. Sorry. Stop. Anyway, go ahead, Sonny. What's going on?
Sonny00:13:43Talk to me. So I went to the dentist this morning. I got my teeth cleaned. Congratulations. It's a standard thing. And as part of it, for some reason, the dental hygienist wanted to get my heart rate and blood pressure, which –
Vic00:13:58They always do that now.
Sonny00:13:59Sure.
Vic00:14:00That's a thing that they do now. They've done that only recently and I disapprove of it.
Sonny00:14:03I don't understand it. I don't understand it. It's a trap. What are they going to do? Be cardiologists on the spot? It's just another – well, it's not like I'm going under. You're barely a doctor. They're not putting – they're not giving me anesthesia. I don't need to make sure that my heart is fine. But it's whatever. It's just another part of it. It's another reason why everything is more expensive. Fine. So they put on the little – it's one of the things – it's one of the ones where you put it on your cuff. It's like a little wristband. Oh, yeah. Even that. That's questionable. You hold it against your chest. So I did that and I just wanted – I wanted to let JVL know. I wanted to let JVL know about my resting heart rate. JVL, would you like to know what my resting heart rate was?
JVL00:14:4462. Forty-six.
Sonny00:14:46What? My resting heart rate, 46 on the cuff.
Vic00:14:53Now, that's a little bit low. What does that mean? That's a little bit low for me. So that's not your blood pressure. You're talking about pulse rate?
Sonny00:14:58No. My blood pressure was like pretty standard. It's like 119 over 70 or something like that. But resting heart rate, 46. Now that's not – I wouldn't say that's the normal.
JVL00:15:09Were you on Quaaludes?
Sonny00:15:10What's that?
JVL00:15:11Were you on Quaaludes?
Sonny00:15:12Well, no. I just hadn't had any coffee yet in the morning.
JVL00:15:15That's the resting heart rate of an elite marathoner.
Sonny00:15:18Yes. Well, that's what I wanted to tell you, JVL, is that I'm in the best shape of anyone you know. I'm the healthiest person that you – my heart health is the – I have the highest heart health of anyone you know. And let me – I will give you – I will give everyone who is listening to this podcast right now my secrets to great heart health. Here's what you do. Mm-hmm. You go to the gym for 30 to 40 minutes four times a week. Three times a week, two times a week to five times – it's just whatever you have time for and you do light cardio on the machines. That's it. That's all you got to do. You do what I do. Sounds amazing. You do what I do and you'll be as healthy as you've ever been.
JVL00:15:58I wait – And George W. Bush famously had when he was in office a resting heart rate in the high 30s. Yeah.
Sonny00:16:04Yeah. And he – Well, I'm not – I probably – I don't think I can get that one. He benched 204 and I believe that's a real number for him.
?00:16:08Yeah.
Vic00:16:09Yeah. That's right. I – the weather is bad. I don't have any sort of cardio. I don't have any sort of cardio machines in the house. There's no room. So it's just been all weightlifting but it's been great because I've been really working on my muscles and my heart is pounding right now probably from all the drinking I was doing today. But other than that, it's –
Sonny00:16:29Well, sure. Yeah. That's – I mean that's normal.
Vic00:16:32That's it. Was today the free-beacon Christmas party? No. That's next week. That's next week. This was just a very long lunch today. Where did you go?
Sonny00:16:39Oh, where? Where else would I go?
Vic00:16:41Of course. Did you go to the Palm? Yeah.
Sonny00:16:44I went to the Palm.
Vic00:16:45Who did you have lunch with? Oh, my father-in-law and Father Steven Fields, a friend of ours from – Father, did you do the magic show? Yeah. He was telling us what he was teaching this semester and it's just – you can't see because we don't have video. It's just way over my head. It was something called – what was it called? Eros and Caritas and had to do with Benedict. Oh, yes. Benedict. Okay. He's like a foremost expert on Karl Rahner. Again, just way over here, over my head, not my area. But I did that. Yeah. Love Father Fields. Yeah. And here I am.
Sonny00:17:23Oh, that sounds fake.
Vic00:17:24What?
Sonny00:17:25That sounds like fake stuff. Those aren't real things. There's only one way to – He'll do your CIA, Sonny.
Vic00:17:31You'll love him. Thank you. There's only one way for you to find out, Sonny, the truth. That's it.
Sonny00:17:39Is that – go to Wikipedia?
Vic00:17:41You're killing me. You're killing me. You have one week left, one week left before, well, you know, that holiday where you open up presents. That one.
Sonny00:17:53Hanukkah? Yeah. That's right.
Vic00:17:56Seven days. Yeah.
Sonny00:17:58Well. Eight days.
JVL00:18:00Eight crazy nights. Eight crazy nights.
Sonny00:18:02By the way – Hey, congratulations to Adam Sandler, friend of the show. I think he's well-deserved. Winning the Mark Twain Prize for humor. Yeah.
Vic00:18:13It'll be great. Kennedy Center. That'll be great. I was happy to hear that. That's one good thing that's happening in the world. Okay. Other than that, I realize I'm not able to do the next two weeks of shows for different – because it's every – tonight was a party. I missed tonight's party. Tonight was Kate's party and I missed it, but here I am. And so when I came back after several martinis, I wrote a statement and I'm going to read the statement now to our listeners.
Sonny00:18:36You're going to read a statement?
Vic00:18:37I'm reading a statement. Okay. Here we go. Oh, boy. I haven't really edited the statement. Okay. Because I wrote it when I was –
Sonny00:18:43You sure you don't want to save this for outtakes?
Vic00:18:45No. It's too long. It's too long. Hmm. Okay. We'll get people to digest it. Well, because by the way, I write everything down, as you know. Every episode, I write –
Sonny00:18:58Your process on this show is suboptimal, I think, but –
Vic00:19:03It's brutal.
Sonny00:19:04But –
Vic00:19:05Okay. Well, I – it doesn't matter now. I guess I should tell listeners. Because this is my last show. After six plus years, it's time for me to move on. I've been thinking about this for the last couple of years, and I just didn't want my unhappiness – Last couple of years.
Sonny00:19:23I've been thinking about this – I've been thinking about this for the last couple of – I have! Years I've been – I've been trying to get out of this show for so long. Years I've been yearning to get out of this. You know I've been trying to get out of this facility. I'm going to interrupt your fucking statement as many times as I want. But this is real this time. I want – What? This is – I'm going to interrupt your statement every time. Keep going.
Vic00:19:38I can barely hear you. You're going to have to – Start over. You're going to get closer to the thing. Okay. I've been thinking about this for the last couple of years, and I just didn't want my unhappiness to ruin the show, but more importantly, ruin the friendships, which I value more. There's just too many other things that I want to do, and I haven't gotten around to doing them.
Sonny00:19:59And at the same time – You're going to go to Australia? Yeah. What are you going to do?
Vic00:20:03You're going to go traveling? At the same time – You're going to go traveling? You know, this is not working out the way I imagined it. This is working out – Okay. I thought this would be like a very special episode. I no longer have the – I'm going to fucking heckle you the whole time. – any interested movies or TV. I think we saw a flash of this during the "Everything Everywhere" episode. What was that? That horrible movie. Okay.
Sonny00:20:24Best movie of the year. One of the number one movies of the year. It sucked.
Vic00:20:27That was so overrated. It's just not worth it. I'm almost 50. I can't believe I just wrote that. I'm almost 50. I –
Sonny00:20:34But you're not 50 yet?
Vic00:20:35I'm moving on. A couple months.
Sonny00:20:37When do you turn 50?
Vic00:20:38A couple months. Less than two months.
Sonny00:20:40No. I thought you were 50 already.
Vic00:20:42I thought you were already in the – That's what I hear. That's the worst thing people say, Sonny, by the way.
Sonny00:20:45Okay.
Vic00:20:46I thought you were like 53. But I want to thank you guys, JVL and Sonny, and I want to thank our listeners for these last six years for your support during some very tough times, a lot of laughs. We had a lot of fun times together, Gene, the Quadrants. It also meant a lot that we helped some of you in your darkest times, physically, mentally, or both. I know you've reached out to us and you've told us this and it means a lot. Keep listening and subscribing to this show. It will be great. It will continue to be great. They don't need me to be a continued success. I could literally be dead and the show would be fine. Speaking of which, over the weekend, Black Panther, Wakanda Forever dominated the box office with 11 – you like that? That was a what's-his-name-who-died reference.
Sonny00:21:34Vic, are you trying to tell us you have colon cancer? Is this – Was that what he had? Are you saying you have colon cancer?
Vic00:21:42This is much sadder now. This is much –
Sonny00:21:44I took it dark.
Vic00:21:45I'm sorry I heckled you before. I blame – I blame Tim Rice. I'm sorry I heckled you before. I said – he asked me what kind of a transition. I said, "I don't know how to transition," and he said, "I got an idea." He said, "What was at the top of the box office?" I said, "Wakanda." He said, "Oh, you should do something with that." Okay. So there you go. Wakanda Forever dominated the box office with $11.2 million followed by Violent Night – I'm losing my voice here – with $8.7 million. And in third place, Strange World with 3.8, which is not great. Box office thoughts. How long is Wakanda Forever going to go on?
?00:22:20Forever?
Sonny00:22:21I – well, I will say that I am – I'm a little bit surprised by how sharply it's fallen even though it's not very good. It's probably going to max out at like 4 – I don't know, 30, something like that, 40, 450, somewhere in that range. And I thought it would get to 500 at least for sure and it's definitely not going to do that. So, I don't know, man. I think it's – I think it's a combination of the – it's not very good, frankly. It's not very good. The losing Chadwick Boseman hurts them, but also it's going to be on Disney Plus by like Christmas. It's going to be – it's going to be on Disney Plus, I want to say, in the next two weeks. So, like – So, just siphon it right off. There – there – there's a certain segment of the audience that is simply just like, I'm not going to see these things in theaters if I don't need to and I don't need to because it's going to be on – it's going to be on Disney Plus soon.
Vic00:23:15No. I don't know. And next week is a big movie, supposedly? Is that next weekend?
Sonny00:23:20Well, Avatar, The Way of Water, it's in theaters tonight. We're taping this on Thursday nights. It's going to be – it's going to do for, I would guess, about 450 worldwide. Somewhere 450 to 500 million worldwide.
Vic00:23:34How about in this country?
Sonny00:23:36And then the big question is how well does it hold? There is an interesting little – there's an interesting little subplot here that the – it is oversold at high premium – the big screens. It's oversold at IMAX, Dolby Atmos, those sorts of screens. It is not selling very well at just like the standard 2D screens. Even the regular 3D screens are like not selling – they're like half full. But people are being very picky about how they want to watch this movie which is interesting. It also – it could – it suggests a whole bunch of stuff. It could mean longer legs because people are going to take longer to see it because they're waiting to see it on a – in a chair they want, on a format they want. And I will say now, I will just – I will say to the listeners of this show if you're going to see this movie, A, you should see it in theaters, B, you should see it in a premium large screen format, a PLF format, either an IMAX or the Dolby Cinema system. You should see it in 3D. You should see it in HFR. You should go to the high frame rate showings and watch it in that, the HFR 3D because there's – it's really the only reason to see this movie. The plot is – it's barely a narrative feature. You've seen this already?
Vic00:25:01You've seen it already, Sonny?
Sonny00:25:02Yeah, I've seen it already. I've got a review up. Well, by the time people are listening to this, my review will already be up.
Vic00:25:09But it's – Does James Cameron – I mean, he want – does he intend people to see it with the full thing?
Sonny00:25:16If you don't – there's no reason to see this movie if you don't see it in 3D and there's really no reason to see this movie if you're not seeing it in 3D HFR. I really strongly believe that. It's a – it is a visual experience unlike anything else that you have ever seen in theaters unless you went to go see Gemini Man in the IMAX 3D HFR. Like that's the only reason to see this movie is if you are going to go see it in a theater on a big screen. There will be people nine months from now who watch it on their phone, on an airplane and are like, "I don't understand what the big deal is."
JVL00:25:56It's such a fucking sadness to me.
Sonny00:25:58Yeah. I mean, like I – it's like it makes me want to channel David Lynch and just be like, "You haven't seen the fucking movie." But like this is not Shakespeare. It's not – it's not – It's a ride. It is a ride. It is – It's a theme park ride. Like it's not even – like I would say it's even – I mean it's not even like Terminator 2 or Terminator or something like that. True Lies. Like those are movies that are like fully developed and have humans doing human things and it's like –
Vic00:26:30That's like my favorite of James Cameron movies is like True Lies and Terminator 2. That's great. True Lies is great.
Sonny00:26:36But this is – this is not that sort of movie. It's a movie that you go see to experience a different audio visual thing than you have ever experienced before and it's worth it. I think it's worth it.
Vic00:26:48It's much, much like the Avatar ride in Disney World, right? Never been on that. Unlike any other ride.
Sonny00:26:54Never been on that.
JVL00:26:56Sonny, can you do 3D high frame rate on a Dolby Atmos screen? Or are these things – to get the high frame rate 3D, do you have to be on an IMAX?
Sonny00:27:11So, you need to pay attention to where you were seeing it and what the theater says. So the – here's what I'll say. I saw it in high frame rate on a Dolby branded cinema at an AMC and every critic screening that I have heard of. It was at one of these theaters. It was at a Dolby branded AMC in 3D with the HFR. That's how – but not – my understanding, again, my understanding is not all Dolby systems are necessarily set up for this. I don't think the Georgetown AMC for instance, their Dolby, I do not think that that is a 3D compatible system. My understanding is I do think all of the IMAXs should be showing it in high frame rate 3D. Should be, I think is my understanding. Again, you got to – this is one of these weird things where like – I'm very curious to see the cinema score on this movie because I do think that a lot of people are going to go in not expecting the high frame rate and get it or expecting the high frame rate and not get it and be like I don't understand what the big deal is or like I got this and I'm annoyed by it or possibly –
JVL00:28:26Why does it look like a soap opera?
Sonny00:28:28But I also – here's a low key – I think this is an underrated fact. Underrated factor that Cameron is counting on. I think so many people have motion smoothing on their TVs all the time right now that they
JVL00:28:38are just not even going to fucking notice it in the theaters.
Sonny00:28:41They're just going to be like, "Oh, this looks like my TV at home. It's fine." Yeah. Just a little blur. But I – like to describe it as motion smoothing is incorrect. As our friend Tony Davis has talked about with me on another podcast, like the reason motion smoothing doesn't work is because the TV is essentially creating data for you. It's creating frames. It's creating frames and inserting them into the film and it creates a weird uncanny valley thing. It doesn't work. But high frame rate is just showing you more information. It's showing you more information. The – God, I could talk – we'll talk about this all next week. But like the – Please do. The thing that's interesting about Avatar: The Way of Water is Cameron switches from 48 frames per second to 24 frames per second. 24 frames per second is the standard cinematic frame rate. That's like when you go to a theater, you are watching something that is being displayed at 24 frames per second. The Way of Water, the high frame rate is in 48 frames per second and he switches back and forth between these. I think that's a big mistake, frankly. I think he should have just kept it at 48 all the time because switching from 48 to 24 is like when Christopher Nolan switches from IMAX ratio to regular ratio in something like Dunkirk. It really calls attention to itself. I don't care for it.
JVL00:30:05Is he doing it when you're underwater? You got a high frame rate underwater.
Sonny00:30:08There's no good rhyme or reason to it. It is literally, I think, mostly when there's a close-up on a dialogue sequence. He switches to 24 frames per second and when it's a bigger action sequence or when people are flying through the air or whatever, it's 48 frames per second. That is the best distinction I can make between the two. There's really no rhyme or reason to it. If he had done it in a way, like remember First Man, the Damien Chazelle movie. So remember seeing it. Did you guys see it in IMAX and so when Neil Armstrong gets to the moon, it goes into like full IMAX format. If it had been like that with the high frame rate, if it was like only underwater or only during action sequences or like something, it would have made more sense. Instead, it's very just like switching back and forth and I didn't.
JVL00:31:04Maybe by the time you see this for the fifth time, you will pick up on his rhyme and reason.
Sonny00:31:11I'm going to be spending a lot of late nights at the theater because it's a million
Vic00:31:16hours long. How much of this movie did James Cameron film underwater? Is it like abyss level of underwater or is it?
Sonny00:31:28It's not quite like that, but it's a lot. That's a lot. There's a lot of water. There's a lot of water.
JVL00:31:33More than more than film under actual water, though, filmed in tanks, filmed in tanks.
Sonny00:31:39Really? Films filmed our CGI.
Vic00:31:41Why would they film computer generated images in tanks?
Sonny00:31:44It is amazing. Look, it is genuinely amazing looking. It is the best looking movie I've ever seen.
Vic00:31:50I'm sure it'll be amazing when I see this in the level three auditorium basement at Clarendon Courthouse AMC when they show it there, we'll see this on a plane.
JVL00:32:00The next time you're heading to Australia.
Sonny00:32:01I think you're never going to see this fucking movie.
Vic00:32:02You're never going to see it. I am never going to see it. Years from now, I'm going to come back and I'll say, "You know, folks, you were right. That was something else." It's going to be like that. Tell me now, who's the villain in this? Who's the villain in this movie? Are there like other-
Sonny00:32:14Horwich is back. What? Stephen Lang is back. No, he's not. We'll talk about it next week. We'll talk about it next week with whoever we get to fill in for you on the show. Oh, don't tease me like that. He was killed. Since you're a fucking quitter.
Vic00:32:24He was a pimp. You quitter? Yeah, now I really want to come back. Let's move on because that just killed me right there. I almost hit leave session. This week, we're talking about the number two movie at the box office, Violent Night, starring David Harbour and John Leguizamo. Is that like almost equal billing really or is it just David Harbour? It's David Harbour. Okay. Sonny, how about a big boy review?
Sonny00:32:51This is an interesting movie for me to review because I watched it like two and a half weeks ago. I don't remember anything that happened in it. So the setup here is basically it's Santa does a die hard. Santa does a die hard.
JVL00:33:05Bad Santa does a die hard.
Sonny00:33:07He's a sad Santa. Well, he's more of a sad Santa than a bad Santa. He's sad. He's disappointed in the world. The children have let him go, let him down and he's embarrassed by them and that's why he's drinking. He's drinking at an English pub and he throws up on the innkeeper and this is how we know he's a sad Santa because he's drunk. He's just drunk and he's going all over the place and he goes to a family compound of very, very wealthy people. They're bad because they're rich. That's one thing we need to take away from this. They're bad because they're rich and when he gets there, the compound is being invaded by John Leguizamo and his band of stunt men.
Vic00:33:50There's literally a safe scene. There's a safety. The only thing that's missing from that is Beethoven's Ninth.
Sonny00:33:57Again, it's Santa being John McClane from Die Hard. He has to go around the house and save the family that has been taken hostage by the evil invaders and he takes them out one by one and we learn that Santa, he was a Norse warrior many centuries ago and he used to have a hammer called Skull Crusher and he's got to get back in the rhythm. It's also kind of like. Home Alone. There's a Home Alone element to this because there's a scamp, there's a young scamp who is hidden in the attic and she has to like make traps.
JVL00:34:35She just watched Home Alone. The night before this. She just watched Home Alone.
Sonny00:34:38She watched Home Alone. It's not a subtle thing. It's not subtext. It's the thing above the subtext. What do you call that? It's the text. I don't know, man. It's the guys who made Bullet Train and the John Wick movies. And it is very much in that vein of wouldn't it be cool if we had stunt guys coordinating Santa doing a bunch of fights with bad guys who are also stuntmen? And it kind of works except for the fact that there's nothing great about anything. It's just all kind of fine. It's just all kind of fine. There are no great jokes in this. There's no single great performance in this like in say a Fat Man, right? Fat Man, which we did a couple of years back, is so much better than this on every level. It's the same basic kind of movie, but it's just leagues better than this.
Vic00:35:43You know why? Also because it's like less is more with, is it called Fat Man?
Sonny00:35:48Fat Man, yeah.
Vic00:35:49Yeah, Fat Man.
Sonny00:35:50The Mel Gibson.
Vic00:35:52It's so focused and concentrated in the storyline and the characters that it's just for me that worked better because this is so, it's so crazy out of control this thing with all these people involved. Yeah.
Sonny00:36:06Anyway, continue. Anyway, this is a, once upon a time this was a programmer. People would go and see something like this to kill the time. It'd make about $50 million at the box office and we'd all move on with our lives and that would be that. It's not terrible, but it's also not great. It's fine. This is the definitional B minus two and a half star, it's okay. It's nothing special, but it's nothing terrible sort of movie and I'm fine with that except I feel like there's a much better version of this film somewhere in there. One that is not only better scripted. It has actual jokes in it and has actual characters instead of sketched out archetypes. But also there's a better directed version of this movie. This movie does not have any of the action panache of Bullet Train or John Wick. It is very plain and while it has some interesting ideas kind of like the magical Santa Santa sack that you stick your hand into and you pull it out and then you've stabbed a gift or what like there's just nothing there's nothing special there they do nothing with the reindeer they do nothing with I don't know I just found the whole thing like kind of mad and this is why I can I can I get very genuinely say that I have not thought about this movie in two weeks since I wrote my review. I just I have not thought about it at all because it's it is a very forgettable sort of film.
JVL00:37:50JVL what did you think so the the best stuff in this movie is the family because the family are a group of total shitheels and they're all terrible and they're terrible to each other and it's just it's not funny enough and this is like a homeless man's arrested development. Yeah, you know what a homeless I just watched the Kristen Bell Allison Janney Amazon movie the ones we hate at the wedding and I felt exactly I didn't even finish it and you guys know how I feel about Kristen Bell. It's just not funny enough. Well, you just look at how you can't understand how like it's a comedy and the jokes aren't good enough. Yeah, and like it's not even up to get like to get it to par. And that's what this a lot. This is like slightly funnier than the ones we hate the wedding but but not enough like you need another five versions of this script needs to be home.
Vic00:39:02Why is I feel like there's so many movies that we've seen that are like this though that there was potential and it just and it's like if we know that don't they know that it could be better and it and some of it I think is movies that end up on streaming post
JVL00:39:15pandemic, right? I mean the pin the pandemic broke the movie making process. And the pipelines got fucked up and the shooting things got fucked up and we want to be we saw this with the the George Clooney Julia Roberts movie a few weeks ago. These things are not good enough.
Sonny00:39:34Yeah to be turned into feature films and it's not say they couldn't be was again.
JVL00:39:39I think as you say Sonny that there is a pretty there is an instant classic version of this film which could have been made with nothing being changed. Except. Except the script being sharper and you know we giving the family more like that the kid the so the family we care of the family kid is a mother who is a ball buster and she has two children a son who is married he's the father of the the little scamp who is doing the home alone stuff and his wife that's right the mother is Beverly D'Angelo that's Beverly D'Angelo God that's depressing and she's great in this. It's but it's depressing and and there's then a daughter who has a youtuber bro son and a a boy toy boyfriend and there are like little flashes of like you could see where these characters could have been quite funny right and it's just not enough yeah the you just need to be done. This the families take up like half the movie half the movie needs to be about the family dynamic and needs to have the comedy really sharpened and amped up in particular since
Vic00:40:59the sort of supposed not counting Santa main a character is the other son who is trying to rekindle his marriage and and loves his daughter he's an actor I I don't I don't know him but not that that should be a knock against him but I did not find him sympathetic at all. I'm not rooting for him I didn't really like him you know and John John Leguizamo who is
JVL00:41:27fine in this doesn't have enough to do and doesn't have enough the character just doesn't have enough meat on the bones to make it interesting and it's not John Leguizamo is not neither good or bad you could see how with a better written character he could have done more
Vic00:41:49with it and just sort of there right if you almost feel bad because you know I mean he's just working with the script they give him and that script included a whole thing about why he hates Christmas you know really we have to get into that but it's just so it's
Sonny00:42:04just so it's such the basic a bare-bones version of that story there they're like having having a villain who hates Christmas and that's why he is doing like whatever that that could be interesting. But like it's it's like a tenth as interesting as the story from gremlins about the dad going down the chimney you know and that's like a tossed off character beat that's like not even that's not even a like the the motivation of the characters or anything it's just like a good it's just like a good interesting kind of clever story in here it's just like I hate hate Christmas didn't know the sister in this movie is played by is played by Edie Patterson who is in the righteous gemstones she plays Judy gemstone and she's fantastic in that show and you can see moments here where like yes that that is like she's bringing that Judy gemstone energy to this role but there's just nothing for her to do with it this needed another pass by like what's his name the foot fist way guy like the Danny McBride it needed something it needed like a genuine. Comic filmmaker or TV producer to come in and be like here are some actual jokes that your characters can say to each other right there were not enough there was not enough
JVL00:43:29of you know I I feel before we get to do you your big I feel a little bit as though maybe I'm not giving the movie a fair enough shot because the last thing I saw before it was the trailer for cocaine there which looks like it might be the greatest. Cinematic experience ever. Had you guys known this before you caught the trailer for it had you heard of no the
Vic00:43:56film cocaine bear it act that act it actually happened up there in Georgia in the mid-eighties
JVL00:44:01a real thing you know the uh yeah well I'm real in the sense that there was a bear who ate cocaine yeah he didn't die on a murderous rampage killing men women and children and jumping into ambulances which are driving at seven miles an hour but it looks that looks like the snakes on a plane sequel that America has needed for fifteen years well I'm just
Sonny00:44:22gonna throw this out there though I I said to you this looks like snakes on a plane JBL but that's not necessarily a compliment because nobody went to go see snakes on a plane it looks like so kind of hammy and hacky and one note that I I don't know that folks are
Vic00:44:35actually gonna show up for it I'll tell you what my concern is number one a reason to see it reason to see it of course is Ray Liotta is probably one of his last roles Kerry Russell of course as well. But uh that's that's CGI bear man it's just not doing it's too much I know it's fake.
JVL00:44:53No but that's what you want you want it to be like the sharknado right I mean you don't want it to be a good CGI bear. If that's what they're intending if that's what they're intending then I have to I would
Vic00:45:02have to adjust my expectations for that. You don't want it to be Cujo. But I I wanted Cujo I wanted like even give me a fake bear like from the great outdoors which is clearly like somebody inside a bear outfit. Man in a suit. I would take that yeah I would take that over over CGI bear.
JVL00:45:16But yeah I was I was waiting for some wacky off the wallness and Violent Night didn't deliver enough of that for me.
Vic00:45:27By the way do you remember speaking of snakes on the plane do you remember the uh the promos the how they tried to spread uh you know by you know before they had social media how they tried to you know get word of mouth out there about go see this movie do you remember what do you remember the thing that they did? No. Do you remember? You could get it was all pre-programmed but you could get on the phone an automated Samuel Jackson to tell whoever give them a phone number and the name of a of a friend and Samuel Jackson would say hey Steve Samuel Jackson go see snakes on a plane and he would do this which meant that Samuel Jackson had to like sit there and record a million names.
Sonny00:46:13Well that's he would just record the names it would just be like. Yeah. That's right. It just. Steve.
Vic00:46:19Steve. John. John. John. Yeah. Right. Right. And that was the thing that they did.
Sonny00:46:27I remember. Think about how many he would have to do just for you. Vic would be like Vic. Victor. Victorino. Victorino. That's right.
Vic00:46:34That's exhausting. Um. Did you like it?
JVL00:46:37The quadrants.
Vic00:46:38You didn't like it did you? No. I wanted to like it but it was kind of almost embarrassing. The head on fire? How identical it was to Die Hard.
JVL00:46:46Yeah.
Vic00:46:47For me. I was like this. It was just too identical. I'm like again with this. The safe scene. Well. Okay. So. The quadrants. Plot is an A. There's not much not to understand. I mean. Questions. There's questions about how do certain things work in this. But you know. You can. Their default of course. Sometimes the default is multiverse. In this case the default is magic. Magic sack.
Sonny00:47:12Is that what he calls it? Santa magic. Santa magic.
Vic00:47:15Santa magic. Christmas magic.
Sonny00:47:17But nobody knows how the Santa magic works.
Vic00:47:18Christmas magic. He doesn't know how any of that works. Thank you. Christmas. Like he barely knows how he got there. Okay. Yeah. You just throw that in there. Okay. And it was very weird because you know. This idea that he was some. A Norse thing. It would have been more. You know. Convincing if he was. Obviously from Turkey. Which is where Saint Nicholas is from. Well. Modern day. Right. Myrna. Smyrna.
JVL00:47:40Duration is a B. It's less than two hours. But it could have been shorter.
Sonny00:47:42Felt long.
Vic00:47:43Felt long. Felt long. Action. Violence. I'll give it an A++. There were some interesting death scenes in there. Including John Leguizamo's. Which you almost had to figure out. Hey.
JVL00:47:53I didn't understand what happened.
Vic00:47:56His body. Santa took John Leguizamo's body. Which is another weird unexplained trick of him through the chimney. Well. He travels through the chimney. He goes up the. But he's physically. Because John Leguizamo cannot turn. Right. Into that.
JVL00:48:10Oh.
Vic00:48:11John Leguizamo. Flaming. I see. So instead. Physically. What happens. He's bent into a. You know. These chimneys are. Okay. Yeah. So the only thing that's left is a stump. And a torso. That was pretty interesting. And then sex nudity is enough. There was nothing in there. Even though this is. It's an R. It's an R. A very hard R for a lot of violence. Yeah. So it comes out to a B minus. Which I think is what Sonny said. So. Again. Not only Die Hard won. And the whole thing about. You know. Because he's not invited to this party. Right. They're like. Who's the Santa? The safe. We've got to open up the safe. I said. Why don't they do a thing where they shut the power down and then it'll just open up on itself. Okay. The third thing is also a similarity to Die Hard 2. Which is the Arctic outfitted special unit that comes to save the day is in fact in cahoots with the bad guys. Is exactly what happened in Die Hard 2 with John Amos and his team. You know. When they're there. The dullest.
Sonny00:49:11The dullest.
Vic00:49:12Yeah. With William Sagler.
Sonny00:49:14I haven't watched that movie in like 25 years.
Vic00:49:18I like that one. And then it turns out they're all on the same team. They were shooting blanks at each other. The whole thing. So that was just too much for me. And I guess the only one I really liked is David Harbour. But I like him because it reminds me of Hopper from Stranger Things.
Sonny00:49:35Yeah. I like David Harbour. I think he's good. And I like. Yeah. Again. He's a funny actor. Who. He's got a lot of different stuff to work with is pretty solid. Even in like the Black Widow movie. Like he's so much better in that than in this. Much better. Yeah.
Vic00:49:53Like he. Which is another one that was streaming. Wasn't it? That wasn't.
Sonny00:49:57We didn't see that in the theater. No that was. Well it was. It was on Disney Plus. It was both. Yeah. It was on. Premier Access. Yeah.
Vic00:50:06It was on the Premier Access and also in theaters. I saw it in theaters. I don't know about you guys. That was one that turned out to be a mistake. I guess according to Scarlett Johansson.
Sonny00:50:11Because she thinks it would have been. Well the big. out a press release blasting her being like she's so greedy she wants people to go to theaters when there's this deadly pandemic on like yeah you're killing us so i i risked my life i by the
Vic00:50:24i risked my life to see tenet that's what i have to say for what i have a question good movie for one of the best movies of the 2020s i died seeing tenet goodbye sir michael in my theater too on
JVL00:50:38it was more crowded than i expected i went on a wednesday night i think and it was a quarter full in a large theater and i gotta tell you the movie killed movie killed in my same me same but everybody was laughing out loud almost all throughout the movie like people really liked it and i don't i don't know what to do except to offer that to you as a data point of did you guys have the same experience
Vic00:51:13i had that exact same experience this is at the amc courthouse in clarendon and it was semi-crowded and it was like boisterous and people are laughing out loud and there was some clapping and and i'm like really and that tells me people are starved i for entertainment it did very well in
Sonny00:51:33my theater too i don't know about your guys uh theater but my theatrical experience was more african-american than than not and they were super into it they were uh super i don't
JVL00:51:46want to generalize but i think mine was heavily italian well probably that's hey that's kind of
Sonny00:51:52unfair now how can you okay the movie did um i was i was frankly surprised that the cinema score was only a b plus on this because i saw i saw it like the thursday it came out i saw it that it would be at least an a minus maybe an a because my audience was again they were like i they were weirdly into it i was just like you really you find this funny and i don't think i
Vic00:52:20don't know i would say the same thing sonny and and it was the same crowd uh well not the same exact i mean just well gotta go uh i mean it's the same sort of demographic demographic was that and uh but it's just but i do think it's just because people want they want to go out and give them something good it can't be that hard give them cocaine bear i don't know uh you know what's funny if this came 40 years ago it's probably not exactly 40 years i'm sure it's not exactly 40 years um there was such an uproar when uh the movie silent night deadly night came out right it was maybe the first time how dare they take darkly sinister like oh you know openly like this is a horror movie involving a guy dressed as santa let's let's let's see how that works out and people were so upset about this thing and they had commercials on tv and kids were getting upset understandably at the time in the 80s um and now of course you know violent santa i mean obviously in both cases of this and fat man santa is on the good side so he's not bad but it's it's it's interesting to see that change uh also uh the uh silent night deadly night um i think it did really well on the quadrants even though it's about to say it's a mess
JVL00:53:38probably pg right it's like pg just boobs everywhere
Vic00:53:42practically g yeah a woman got impaled on antlers that wasn't the only thing she got impaled on but anyway she got impaled on the antlers and you know i mean it's just so like it's it's deranged but uh now it's like eh whatever i'd never seen by the way everyone talks about bad santa i've
Sonny00:54:02never seen that oh it's great yeah you should see it yeah that's what everybody says the one
Vic00:54:07with billy bob thornton
Sonny00:54:08the first one the second one is cinematic abortion but the first one is great
Vic00:54:14good to know good to know do we have any other thoughts on violet night i think that's as much we can say about violet night um okay um i have uh do you have any uh shout outs corrections nope anything i have a shout out congratulations to listener peter christiansen brother of josh christiansen who i work with peter christiansen who uh loves the show just got married this uh past this past weekend uh and congratulations to his lovely bride katherine i would say remember jvl's advice when things get tough tamp it down not that we do but that's the advice and when you don't follow that advice you'll say well it's the secret to happiness i'm paying the price because yeah okay that is all the time we're giving to this episode questions comments uh questions comments compliments tweet at sunny bunch uh you can still tweet me at victorina mattis again be sure to subscribe to the to these guys on patreon just go to subbeacon.com they are there tell your friends until next time
Sonny00:55:28you know it's the the first show that we do uh when you're not here vick i'm gonna be i'm gonna be telling everybody that the reason that you uh left the show is because you you don't like them anymore you you don't like the listeners you mean the listeners listeners and there are no they have i don't think there's anybody i don't care about their validation anymore they've disappointed you and they're tired of your shit and you you you just what you're you're just you're just you're just you're just you've had enough of them and you don't want to hear from them anymore so you're gonna lose you're gonna lose uh you know the next uh race for the love president of
Vic00:56:14the the class i don't know we'll see i'll tell you the first thing i'm gonna do when this shows up canceling my stubs a list that's i may never go back to theater again i'm canceling that i don't even want i cut i already canceled apple plus i i'm canceling hulu i just i don't even i'm sure
JVL00:56:31you don't even pay for apple plus they give away apple plus like lollipops at a at a diner oh no
Vic00:56:37i've gotten no you know what they're offering now is apple music freebie but i'm i don't know if that's any good anyway i'll tell you what i have here um uh let's see here uh the i'd say looking back over the last six years best movie maybe that i've seen is maybe once upon a time in hollywood could that be correct in the past six years is that the best movie sonny you have a better memory about this that i think we we went through marvel dark knight rises yeah uh no that we weren't we weren't around for that that's that's way before our time i'm trying to think um
Sonny00:57:17i mean i could i could i i think you could you could make a strong argument for that it's the movie that i have revisited the most over the last three years uh certainly um it's really
Vic00:57:30something about widows okay but but i i do have you'll be happy to hear before i leave i do have
JVL00:57:37top five worst movies i had to see on the show wait can hold on can we each guess one of them
Vic00:57:45okay but do you want to do you want to write it down and then and not let me read it first you're right you're not even gonna guess okay all right jvl you could write it down or you could just yeah you go ahead do you uh i'm gonna guess the beach bum oh wow oh
JVL00:58:07okay well i'll give i'll give you my five i'm just guessing that that's one of the five
Vic00:58:11that is definitely wow look at that uh number number five number five is uh now i just thought about this like right before i got here so this is this is i could be i could be missing some real horrible movies all right um first of all i you know i know for jvl the movie that you may have hated the most was the the adam sandler movie that you walked out on uncut gems did not like it okay number five doctor strange in the multiverse of madness now come on man that's too much that's on every level it was too much okay number four the eternals that thing was what is happening there well that was horrible okay number number three is the beach bum it did very well part of the quadrants it was like a plus plus right part it was so shockingly a plus plus i mean it's really graphic but there were there was almost no other redeeming qualities in that movie okay uh number two sonny you're gonna love this one number two high flying bird it's a movie that steven soda jvl it's the one that he did on the iphone the whole movie was done on the phone great okay there
JVL00:59:30was like no action happens there was literally nothing happens we we did there was not even any
Vic00:59:36basket i was like okay here comes the basketball there was they didn't even show him playing it was the weirdest thing okay uh and number one is widows i'm kidding i just threw that in there i just i was not in the mood to see that movie and it always remained i knew that you loved it so much that's why i always
JVL00:59:53kept on bringing up widows but it's i'm convinced that you would love under the silver lake if you saw it not drunk i remain convinced all right we did that show that got an asterisk just all show long you were like i hated it i didn't understand it and then when sonny said had you been drinking when you saw you were like oh actually yeah i was really bummed when i watched that that is the one that i think if you went back
Vic01:00:18you would reconsider it i you know and it's funny because and that would that's a jet's a real if you go back i don't know if they can go back and this is you know i'm not counting the substandard this is like episode 184 of of the sub beacon uh that's a genuine moment uh that that was not planned or rehearsed in any way i genuinely went in there thinking that movie sucked not only that but i had realized once that sonny brought that revelation out that i had uh basically slept in i was in and out of consciousness watching that movie so i'd wake up and there's a guy playing the piano and then he kills
Sonny01:00:58the guy it's like what is happening here you you were not in the right frame of mind to watch under the silver lake god we i mean we have been doing that we've been doing this show for a long time now what was i what was the first really good movie that we saw was it rogue one was that the first
Vic01:01:12movie that we were like yes this is great yes yes we were doing is it the weirdest thing is it would have been so obvious now going back to the first episode that all we had to do was see a movie what what's out that week and do that and i don't think that came
JVL01:01:28to us like i don't think it was no we had different blocks and when we started the show and you know we had like an a block yeah block a c block you know
Vic01:01:37and yeah elements that's right yeah and and that's all but but a lot of things like shows like this they just happen organically and so you know that's the the reason why it works is because it's not you know we don't you know you can't make fetch happen just sort of yeah and then happen like that somebody looking forward to i'm looking forward to
Sonny01:01:58somebody blows it up future they hate the listeners you know it's too bad it's time
Vic01:02:04to be how come i can't leave session that's what i wanted i'm sorry look it's like it's like pale you're here i'm pressing it if we never end the show then
Sonny01:02:12you just have to stay on the show forever you'll just have to do your work here from here and we'll we'll do whatever phantom zone in here every thursday every thursday night you'll be here again it'll be a it'll be a i'm sure it'll be a hour i gotta say to end the show hour 1265 on this squad cast recording i'm spending thousands of dollars a month just to keep it running just to keep it going jerry lewis telephone
Vic01:02:37of podcasts. I'm sure it's good. All right.
