#138. 'Dirty Harry'

2022-09-16 · 1:02:55

Listen to this episode ↗on Substack, where the show lives now

The main event is Dirty Harry (1971), which Vic rewatches and crowns an outright "quadrant killer," handing out A-pluses across the board — plot, duration, and action/violence are all A-plus, with the copious go-go-bar and peep-show nudity also earning an A-plus for casual excess; Sonny, who watched with the Richard Schickel Blu-ray commentary running (and found it only mildly informative), and JVL are just as admiring, with all three digging into the film's spare, bell-and-hydraulics sound design, its helicopter-shot stadium zoom, Lalo Schifrin's score, Andy Robinson's gleefully hateable Scorpio killer, Pauline Kael's "fascist" takedown and how oddly that label has curdled since, the film's roots in the Western genre by way of Eastwood and Charles Bronson, and its status as an unmistakable time capsule of early-1970s San Francisco vice culture; they also detour into the sequel Magnum Force, the same-year Siegel/Eastwood pairing The Beguiled, and the Charles Bronson quasi-remake 10 to Midnight. Before any of that, the episode opens with its usual long banter stretch: JVL delivers an epic, furious blow-by-blow of a multi-hour New Jersey DMV odyssey to get a Real ID (duplicate hand-copied cards, endless numbered lines, a suggestion he should have tipped someone), Sonny announces he has reluctantly become the volunteer coach of his preschooler's YMCA soccer team (the Hornets) and jokes about filing down cleats and buying trophies for favorites, and Vic recounts a viral tweet theory that the best Chinese restaurants get exactly 3.5 Yelp stars, plus a memory of a beloved, abusive mom-and-pop Georgetown Chinese spot. There's also a quick box-office check (Barbarian overperforming, Brahmastra and Bullet Train rounding out the top three) and chatter about the X/Pearl horror franchise before the group settles in on Harry Callahan. The episode closes with Vic recapping a heartwarming/unsettling local-news segment about a paralyzed veteran regaining the ability to walk via an exoskeleton, which Vic and Sonny can't help comparing to Doctor Octopus.

Guest00:00:00Callahan sir, I don't want any more trouble like you had last year in the Fillmore district Understand that's my policy. Yeah. Well when the adult male is chasing a female with intent to commit rape. I Shoot the bastard. That's my policy intent How did you establish that? Well a naked man is chasing a woman through an alley with a butcher knife I figure isn't out collecting for the Red Cross. I Think he's got a point
Vic00:00:46Hello and welcome to another edition of the sub beacon on Victor Mattis along with Sonny Bunch and Jonathan V last Just a reminder the sub beacons now available through patreon go to sub beacon comm you'll easily find Us, please subscribe tell your friends and don't forget about the sub beacon merchandise store at T public.com Gentlemen, how are we JVL? What is going on? gentlemen, I
JVL00:01:12Have been to hell. Oh I Had to go to the DMV. Ah I Look, I've never liked Virginia. I did not enjoy living in the state of Virginia I thought Virginia as a Commonwealth was very bad at many things one thing Virginia was good at was the DMV Virginia has a very efficient DMV. You have to go to it once every decade basically Yeah, the funny thing is by the way
Vic00:01:42If you've lived here long enough and you complain about it, then it's like you have no idea how bad the other ones are
JVL00:01:47I don't understand no idea and you know, you can do everything online. Basically when you show up, it's very efficient Can I recount to you what happened to me at the DMV, please cuz I idea I had to get I had to get a couple things done if you can't do it on the sub beacon Where can you do it? That's what I say. So uh, so first of all For the New Jersey DMV to do anything you have to make an appointment and the appointments are booked like eight to ten weeks out Oh, you can't just walk in. Is that a hold on? Hey, hold on one second JVL. Yeah, I
Vic00:02:19Don't I don't think I have much of a memory at all of my last experience at every DMV So I imagine things I mean I don't know if you remember either. Oh, I remember. Well, what is worse? It's worse. Okay, that's my question
Sonny00:02:33Is this a covert era thing like that? You had that you had the oh
JVL00:02:37No, oh No, let me let me take you down the river in my personal heart of darkness So I walk in and the very first thing you do as you come in past two armed guards is you are told to get in line So I get in line this line is Aligned to see the receptionist I get up to the receptionist the receptionist looks up my appointment sees that I am in fact They're on time for my appointment and she hands me two Identical information cards and tells me to fill them both out. Why do I have to fill out two identical information cards? Why can't there be one with a you know a carbon copy next to it? Yes Why couldn't these things have been done electronically before I showed up? These are questions that I learn over the course Of three fucking hours not to ask She gives me my two cards tells me to fill them out and then once I am done filling them out Get back on the same line. I was just on
Vic00:03:40So I do that could be like oh, hey hold my spot
JVL00:03:43No you can't so I go and I fill out both of the cards identically and then I get back in the first line and then I Wait, and then I get back up to this lady again, and she looks at the cards and says, okay You can now go to the line for ID verification so I walk across the room to the line for ID verification and I stand there and watch as a series of Wonderful human beings in front of me are called sequentially to the window And right as I am the next person to be called up to this window another Employee of the DMV. I don't know she wasn't wearing any identification But she just comes over and waves me says come here you come here. Come here. Follow me Ooh, that is a mysterious accent. Okay, so I you know, like a good little and okay She drags me all the way across and she says you go to this window for ID verification Get in line. And so I I am on to a new line I I was just about to be next at the old line, but now I'm on a line for ID verification So I sit and I wait my turn and I finally get up to that window and I hand my two cards my duplicate cards to the customer service man and he looks at them and then scribble some things on the back of them and then Hands me a ticket with the number on it. He says you go wait in line again until your number is called
Vic00:05:09So I go and I wait
JVL00:05:12Now at this point I should say that it's a lovely day. Yeah, I'm sorry wait
Sonny00:05:17They wanted you to get it. They wanted you to get in line so they could call your to get the number
JVL00:05:21Oh, it's just to get the number deadline to get a number and then once you're given a number go and get in line again and
Sonny00:05:29Isn't that the whole point of getting the numbers that you get the number you go sit down and they call the number so you're
JVL00:05:33Like getting a number to get a number so outside. It's beautiful. It's one of these great fall days. It's like 65 degrees inside It is a minimum of 87 There's no air conditioning and there are video screens playing like weird insane Imagine the elevator news but subtract a thousand IQ points That's that's what this is like and There so there are there are the numbers for the people who've gotten their numbers Up on a board and display in these video screens with you know So that'll be the number a one two three and then I'll tell you Windows 17 and below that number are oh one Oh seven Windows six et cetera et cetera. And in addition to Having them displayed on these video screens in very very loud volumes robotic voices read these numbers on an endless loop a One two three, please go to Windows 16 and then a female voice says all of that again in Spanish And then it moves on to our one Oh seven. Oh, please go to window three and it does this ceasingly Over if there's never a second of quiet It just goes on and on and on and at that that's I'm what you can't even hear it anymore It's just like it's there in the background They could have announced your number, but you were so numb by then it would be like, huh? So I finally get my number called and I go up to a new window with a new agent He takes my two duplicate cards and I hand to God
Sonny00:07:21hand to God
JVL00:07:23What he does is he gets out? two more of these exact same cards and Begins rewriting my cards by hand one at a time. I Stand in this front of this guy for 45 fucking minutes in order to get a temporary license now You might say well at least all you had to do is just get it done Right what you go you suffer through it and then it's over No No, no, no, no Because you see even though I have a real ID on my Virginia license And I brought my passport my birth certificate my social security card my utility bills of all those things It wasn't enough to get a real ID New Jersey license. There are some more documents I need to bring now why you should need The whole idea of the real ID is that it is the the Trump the ultimate top I would feel with the real ID that is like the retina scans and Minority Report But evidently not so much that you can't take your real ID from one state and swap it for a real ID in another state So I have to go back. I have to go back. First of all, they didn't give me my license They're gonna mail me my license in 20 days We'll fucking see about that So I have to wait for 20 days to get my license and then once I get it I got to make another appointment six to eight weeks and then go back to this place with all the new documents To get my real ID New Jersey license, but that's not the best part
Sonny00:09:00The best part is that I also need to change the registrations on my cars Oh, but to do that
JVL00:09:06I have to go to a different DMV because the New Jersey DMV has Some DMV places for licenses and some DMV places for vehicles Why would you do be able to do vehicles and licenses in the same place? is
Vic00:09:23the other place a question the other place that you have to go for vehicle registration is at the same place where you have to get where you go for like vehicle inspection your yearly inspection because I think so I think in Unlike in Virginia where you can go to your local gas station. I think in New Jersey. It's all state-owned
JVL00:09:41Yes, it's like in DC. Don't like two locations, right? So here's my question. Oh, man On the one hand I Was driven mad I was I was like you could Go post the prisoner in a Kafka novel or a doves give it. I literally came out shaking Yeah, I bet I was just so everything. I felt like Manuel Noriega Remember when Noriega was holed up in the Vatican Embassy and then they played all the music
Vic00:10:11Nowhere to run by Martha and the Vandellas. Yeah, I
JVL00:10:15Felt like that, but then it occurred to me. Maybe Maybe I've got all of this wrong Maybe I'm looking at all of this the wrong way Maybe I'm a sucker a punk because this is New Jersey. Oh, maybe this entire thing Is just an elaborate nudge for you the customer to give some consideration Yeah, like if you walked in maybe if I had walked in and shaken hands with the receptionist and ponder a 20 a Jackson she would have said oh, hey. Oh, sir. Yes. You just go right over window for Mario will take care of you over there Vinnie and then I go over To Mario and I palm him of the grant and he says here you go, sir Here's a real ID and you just walk out in ten minutes I mean, maybe that's the way it's supposed to be and I just didn't have that in me I'm the guy who still thinks that when I have a contractor over here And he hands me a bill that the bills can be the same whether I pay cash or or a check Not that he's gonna say yeah, baby. Cash. I'm gonna judge, you know sales tax That's right. I think
Vic00:11:24It probably applies across the board JVL. It's like it's like Henry Hill walking into the Copa I think you just go there's a bet. I mean lunch. Look I know people Mm-hmm in my group of friends who we went to a restaurant. We just walked in without any reservations I'm not gonna say where but it was like, oh, sorry. There's ten of us She's like that's at least two three hours. What a make Todd We're like, what is Todd the one who took care of actually not it was another friend and He just who would happen to be at the time in the restaurant business because what it helped You know what a couple Jackson's help but she goes she was a young hostess. She's like, yeah, probably and so he said, okay Hey, yeah, you know, here you go. And she's like great. I just give me five minutes
JVL00:12:10There are all these families waiting in line Jackson's what are Jackson's 2020s? Yeah. Yeah, that's it. Just 220 exactly JVL. Just think about it That's all it might have taken. Here's my question. Here's my question
?00:12:24I
JVL00:12:27Should I try it cuz I gotta go back we know that I have to go back do you remember when I walk in? Yeah, he's shaking. I just he's shaking his head right off the bat be like, hey, what's your name? Mariella Mariella, it's good to see you. You look great today. Did you get a lot of sleep? That hairband goes real nice. I don't know with that accent I don't know if I might backfire but I'll tell you what it's very nice to meet you I was wondering if you could I got some things I gotta Do this afternoon down to the bottom Bing could you think you could help me? Could you just give me a little bit of help?
Vic00:13:00Do you remember and just yeah, do you remember Larry Miller telling the story about? Like you know how the best way to get better service like at the airport, you know, like in the front desk Yeah, you palm you tip like, you know at the front. Oh, hey, thanks a lot You give him a tip because he said I think he got the tip from George Wallace the other comedian and said yeah But he's very good at it. He's Very not the southern politician hot you southern politician a very much different looking George Wallace and also larger But you know, but he's much more cool about it and Larry He panicked he couldn't do it at the he was sweating, you know, it's like how do you bring it? I mean, he just couldn't do it. But I mean look so it worked there. I don't know. Maybe it works at the DMV
Sonny00:13:45Should I try it Sonny? What do you think? I gotta say I I'm usually in favor of trying to use money to improve Your life that is a that's that's a that's a thing I believe in however, this does feel like the sort of thing where you could like very quickly wind up in prison I don't know. I don't know if that's if this is necessarily trying to buy a fake government Identification your honor. I swear to God. I was not trying to buy a real fake ID So I'm just trying to get the line about faster. All I wanted to do honor. Have you ever been to the DMV Sonny?
Vic00:14:20I actually I want JVL to do this just because there is that
Sonny00:14:23Possibility it'd be great for a story. It would be well, we could do the show from prison like over the county lockup
JVL00:14:30You'd have to yeah live from Morris County lockup
Sonny00:14:34You know, I don't know what you'd have to smuggle a smartphone they do that by the way at a cost
JVL00:14:40Well, they have I mean they have very so they have very strict Warnings all over the DMV no photos. No photos or videos punishable by fine and/or imprisonment because they don't
Vic00:14:53want anybody to see what goes on that's exactly right like you know, they they don't it's the state they're applying the same rule when You're at like an international airport in the customs area, but this is it's the DMV But it's precisely because they don't want proof. Yeah, they don't want you to see the duplicating of documents is mystifying. Oh
JVL00:15:11My god, everything is done by hand there
Sonny00:15:14Everything is done by hand. Well, that's all I mean, that's all because these are like patronage jobs, right?
JVL00:15:23Something to do Sonny. I Thought about this as I was standing there This is the worst job I have ever seen I can't imagine getting out of bed every morning doing that to sit in that room for eight hours with the A123, please go to counter for wait. What is what is a worse make work job the
Sonny00:15:48reprinting the handwritten ID cards or pumping gas as
JVL00:15:53Like the gas station that has the light pumping gas. You're out doing your outdoor box you get to meet different You can listen whatever you want with JV guys there walk around then with Chuck They took in the phone all day to their friends, you know, you know, you could be high
Guest00:16:08as a kite as
JVL00:16:11Okay, the other thing I would rather be the septic pumper guy and work in this DMV I'm tight but here's the thing though, you know what?
Vic00:16:19they might like it because everybody is All the same stat. It doesn't matter who you are. They have the power over you in this one air I felt the same way when you when you go to the DC DMV I was always nervous like my heart was pumping like for inspection because they wielded that power and it's the same thing in any DMV they have that and I think they enjoy that
Sonny00:16:40Yeah, I the DC DMV was never that big of a hassle for me because a I did it before Real ID but also be like I I had I had a new ish Car that like would never fail inspect. Oh, yeah So I would just I would just show up there and be like you it's got 10,000 miles on we can do Yeah, you know you're gonna fail it. Come on. Come on. Let's let's yeah, I know
Vic00:17:03No, they'll find they would find like a little you know Like crack in the windshield from like a pebble and then slap a giant big sticker on the windshield red X Yeah, and it's like you know
JVL00:17:14Give them some all you gotta do is give them some consideration and they can look past that back
Vic00:17:19You know what? I thought about I thought about the great line from The Simpsons Patty and Selma who work at the DMV what they tell Bart and they say sometimes
Sonny00:17:28Sometimes we don't let the line move at all. We call those weekdays some days and sometimes that's right That's what I was saying of this whole story. I was like, this is where Patty and Selma come from the New Jersey TMV That's almost certainly. I mean like I don't know I like the Dallas DMV wasn't too bad But again, I've been here during kovat so it was like you had to make appointments and everything was just done online and then you show up with like you Show up with your documents. They do it and then you go. I mean it like wasn't it wasn't hard
JVL00:17:57also, what is that you I do not understand that in the moment when Everything in the world is moving to be digitized and all of all of the information Yeah, that's what winds up in the DMV is digitized But for some reason they want you to go from digital to paper mystify to bring the papers to them so they can read digitize the papers yeah, what did that
Sonny00:18:22I Never understood why they don't have a better system of transferring from state to state I mean just especially now that we're in like again the real idea. They could use the blockchain sunny
JVL00:18:33We could use the blockchain you think I'm kidding, but I'm not this is a perfect application for blockchain
Sonny00:18:39Or just have like the systems all talk to each other just be like yes
JVL00:18:44This person is in fact who he says he is I have finally calmed down. It took about 48 hours Yeah, how are you blood boiling sunny? How are you?
Sonny00:18:52Good good. I've made it. I've made a terrible life choice. I've made a terrible life is the best kind The other the other day we signed we signed my youngest up for pre-k soccer Ah pre-k soccer and it's all it's through the it's through the YMCA Through the YMCA so we saw it we sign him up and you know When I get an email like a week later, it was like your team has no coach who wants to volunteer Oh Coach Sonny two weeks after that like a week after that your team still has no coach who? We need somebody to volunteer to be the coach on this so I like waited today I was like, please god Let anybody else let literally anyone else do this and then nobody had done it and I was like what would what would JVL do in? This situation he would be the coach. So I am now coach Sonny of the Hornets. It's gonna be just like ladybug
JVL00:19:48That's a good movie man
Sonny00:19:51so it's
Vic00:19:53It's I see you think that the other dad does the ankle monitors going off the dad says? Oh, I see your son's seeing a lot of my daughter and Ronnie Dagerfield. You have no idea
JVL00:20:08It's it's crazy, I mean like
Sonny00:20:11It's a bunch of three and four-year-old so it's like, you know, the the guys the the people at the Y were like You know just do one practice where you hand out jerseys and stuff And then like meet 20 minutes before the games and like do do, you know mini practices there So it's basically like I bet I basically am in charge of like seven thing I have to I have to well I have to bring stuff to seven games and that's it
JVL00:20:35That's like the the extent of my responsibility. Sunny is a champion of excellence and winning. I hope that you are going to Teach these kids to play the right way
Sonny00:20:47Manded I've already demanded that they all buy cleats And I've shown them how to file them down to points So when they go in for the slide They can break through these flimsy shin guards that all the kids wear just go right to the bone
Vic00:21:02It's a sunny. I think that probably one of your big selling points was that you were in England They're like, oh, yeah, there's no selling like
Sonny00:21:10It's not like I have to pitch myself to these people It's like they were like literally anybody needs We will take literally a hobo off the street as long as you can pass the background check
JVL00:21:21I was like, oh that's that's me pay you cash money to show up for the first practice wearing a Roy Kent. Yes
Sonny00:21:28I should what so I we've already had the first pack. So I uh, I there's a coach's shirt that you they give you It's like a coach, you know, I've got like a blue coach's shirt and on the back of the shirt It says it says something like the kid first the sports second I was like you guys you've already made a steak the printer messed up the printer messed up the table Yeah, you've reversed it. You gotta pull a Willy Wonka and flip it around. So anyway, it's a very exciting time in my life Are you in charge of the orange slices? Well, so I'm bringing them to the first to the first game I was like I will handle the first game that reminds me. I actually have to go by Capri sense But I've got I've got the I've got the I've got the orange slices and I I have a sign-up genius for the rest of the parents
JVL00:22:20To sign up yeah zero the same parent group where nobody volunteered to coach you think they're gonna sign zero zero zero people
Sonny00:22:28So I wouldn't it's so much easier though. I mean like it's the oranges and you know, you gotta buy them
JVL00:22:32You gotta cut them. You gotta put them in the bags It's gonna be great. Now. Do you have to apportion playing time?
Sonny00:22:39Do you have yeah more than you have starting positions the rule the rule it so we have there are seven kids on the team And it's four v four and I think the rule is everybody is supposed to play Like 50% of the game, so we just like flip them get a lot of goals So yeah, really high scoring affairs. I'm sure I'm sure well not with my in in our in our league There are no keepers So you're just supposed to go but I'm gonna have somebody camp out in the goal and just just like lay across it No money all this shit. I look you there. There are inefficiencies in Pre-k soccer that I am already very aware of frankly, you know, these kids don't have any idea what they're doing So if I can just get One ringer out there who can just do can actually dribble and kick the ball further than six feet I've I've got the whole thing. I've got that. I've got it locked up. I've got the league locked up they're they're like actually, I don't know if there are playoffs in the pre-k, but the But the I don't I like I sat in on I sat on like a two-hour Coaches call the other day and it was literally just like going through a PowerPoint slide Most of it was like don't ever be alone with the children Most of I suspect is about sexual abuse must have it most of it was like most was like don't be alone with the children Don't don't offer them rides. Don't give them gifts or candy. Oh, that's okay. This is does it? I it was like only anyways there there they will they all get a Participation trophy and you're gonna go along with that saying oh, they're all gonna get purchase the mighty have fallen I mean, I'm gonna I'm gonna buy my own trophies for the team
JVL00:24:20MVP and I hope that setter have seven kids on the team. I have only buy two trophies. Well, I'm gonna buy six
Sonny00:24:29You've been by six who's the who's the odd man out?
JVL00:24:32So anyway, it's uh, you all pay attention to Jaden all of you have truth Jaden doesn't cuz Jaden sucks Go home and play your video games Jaden. You're not an athlete. He's uh, he's uh, we did not have the makings of a varsity athlete
Sonny00:24:48so anyway That's what that's what my next seven weeks is like on Saturday morning either 10:15 or 10:30 Which is like it's actually like that's actually the perfect time because it's not hot yet It's early in the morning. I can do stuff stuff the rest of the day, but The love of the kid better get my my kid better get a lot out of this league You better be imbued with the love of the sports. Well, this is forever
JVL00:25:12This is that look you can't get into Yale if you don't start with the pre-k. Yeah, that's got to start now
Sonny00:25:19It's too late. No, it's too late. You're like no, no He should be he should be on a travel team already. Yeah, he should be like going he should be like going to England Like for week-long trips to hone his Cruyff turns and what yeah while also doing service work Well obvious, I mean the service work never stops. He's she should have run six blood drives by now
Vic00:25:43Victorino, how are you buddy? I'm doing fine A friend of the show I saw This this was on Twitter. This is very funny. So a friend of a listener to the show friend of the show David Suggs He he asked me for my two cents on a video By this foodie. You're gonna Freddie Wong. Oh, you're not doing that other thing. What other thing? Oh the the the the truck the traffic Today but I did have I did have a great reply which was traffic is coming to a head. Thank you Um, so anyway, Sonny doesn't know what I'm talking about. Okay, so I have no idea what you're talking about. That's okay
JVL00:26:25Okay, so a tractor-trailer truck carrying dildos and oh, I just see that I did see that build its contents everywhere
Vic00:26:34Was it going to one place like a gigantic warehouse like like the one from me?
Sonny00:26:40Like why would you not have them all on the same truck? I'm sure they're like
Vic00:26:44I'll come what else was that? I know what else was in there. Okay now So this was a this would say it's a tweet a video from this other foodie Freddie Wong who said that the best Chinese restaurants I don't know if you saw the best Chinese restaurants get exactly three point five stars on Yelp I that's very funny not five not one or whatever or not what it has to be exactly three point five and his theory was that if you have Really good Chinese restaurants will have really bad service so that you know typically so that people will rate it low for that reason and Then other places will have you know, really great service And they'll give it a very high rating But the food is mediocre so that you in the end it sort of averages out somewhere in the middle Is like the sweet spot he made he makes a joke that if it's too many stars That means too many white people like it, which is pretty funny in any event. He says that For certain, you know, like Chinese restaurant is just one of these places where the service should be just at But the food is normally very good and I thought about It and and there is real truth to that and I don't you know, at least with Chinese restaurants I remembered a place I used to go to it opened up while I was at Georgetown It was on Prospect Street called choose and it was a mom-and-pop an old mom-and-pop Chinese restaurant and the the father or the husband was this like old long-suffering cook He he never complained. He never said anything. It's just in the back and the wife this old lady was in the front dealing with the customers and she was she was just always yelling and mean and You know like if you if you didn't get your like soup Nazi level or if you did an order right or you use the wrong cup for water because they have the cups with the coke logos and then the styrofoam ones she'd chew you out for it and Write your name down a little red a little red, but yeah so bad that my friend Peter actually called her the c-word It was really bad, but he coming. Yes. That's the one that's The one and and he could do it he's Peter Lowe does not like that he's part Chinese so he's allowed to say this but in any event I remember going there once and There was nobody in there said oh good. It's just me, and I said you know what I'd like I'd like I didn't bother to know if it was on the menu I just said I'll just I'll can I get like a like a pork egg foo young and Then she just says that's not on the menu What you know we don't have and then she goes back and she leaves and starts talking and yelling in Chinese to the Husband and she comes out. She says you lucky no custom quiet. You know whatever. She's not a lot of customer Well, he make for you, so then I said okay. Thank you. Here's my money It comes out it is to this day the best egg foo young I've ever had It's fantastic It was like you know what I mean like fresh the eggs are cracked in there with the bean sprouts and then the pork It's just like the glaze on it. It was so Amazing, but I thought to myself. I would I don't think it applies to other ethnic cuisine does it
Sonny00:29:48Well, I would so on this point I I saw the initial tweet, but in I didn't like watch video or any read any follow-ups or anything and the my theory just going in was like you want to have you want to have like a Lot of five stars and then a handful of one stars because you want the one stars the people who go they're not expecting it To be like authentic Chinese right But like I know I don't think there is another no cuisine like that at all like if I went to if I went to a like Italian restaurant, I'd be like I know what I'm gonna. I know what the thing like yeah
Vic00:30:23I'm gonna be pretty friendly carbonara. Yeah, right exactly so I thought about that and I thought about some other I said I don't think it's With French certainly I don't I don't even think really with Indian speaking of which over the weekend Brahmastra part 1 Shiva Curried its way to second place at the box office With four and a half million dollars behind barbarian With ten point five million and in third place bullet train with three point three million Are we gonna am I gonna end up getting to a week where I'm gonna be like in first place for it's seven hundred fifty thousand dollars What's going on here box office lots?
Sonny00:31:04There's nothing there's nothing new in theater. There's there's There there are three new releases this week, so you'll you'll have some Some new stuff coming the woman king gonna be gonna be a big hit. That's I'm not gonna Say or Viola Davis. Yeah, Viola Davis. It's actually it's it's it's it's it's fine It's actually fine, and there are there are things about it that are very good But like I I don't I don't foresee it being a being a big hit
JVL00:31:31No, I'm like can I just break in here to talk about barbarian because over the weekend I had to stay in an Airbnb Oh in the middle of fucking nowhere In bumblefuck, Virginia where there was zero cell service zero cell service You could not make any phone calls and when I walked in there was a door that led to a basement and There was no way to lock it And I thought to myself it great an hour and a half ago I read Sonny's review of barbarian and now I'm staying in the barbarian You're staying in the murder house room with a murder room with the downstairs murder room. This is great
Sonny00:32:12Barbarian is an interesting movie. So I
Vic00:32:15Sleep shave ale. Did you get any sleep? Did you prop a door against it? Did you just shove a door up under the handle? Did you sleep on your stomach? Sorry, sorry, sorry. Okay, go ahead. Thank you. Thank you. Yes. That's that's the scary thing. Okay, go ahead Killing is one thing but you know, I was stabbed in a matter of speaking. That's right. That's right you guys
Sonny00:32:45barbarian First off it did better than tracking suggested it was tracking at like four or five million it grossed about ten million which is you know double that I'm surprised frankly, it wasn't a little bit higher because the Trailer for it was very good as JBL mentioned a couple shows ago It's like the most terrifying trailer that he'd he'd ever seen and the movie is actually not Quite as scary as the trailers the the movie is the trailer is selling a slightly different movie than what the movie actually is The movie itself is a little bit weirder and funnier There there's like the whole Riot the well, the whole first act is like that horror movie. It's like the you know murder murder room in the murder house You know, you don't go in the hole where the murder is, you know, you don't want to do that but then it shifts it shifts perspective to To it to an entirely different character for the second act who is like a asshole actor who gets metooed and he has to sell his Airbnb Which is a house in Detroit with a murder room and so he comes to the murder house and and it's very Funny because he's like he goes into the the scary murder room and instead of being scared is like excited because he's like look At all this extra square footage. I've got he's played by Justin long. It's very it actually it's it's it's kind of again It's like a very different sort of movie than what the trailer has been selling So anyway, sorry, sorry for the spoilers that people are speaking of horror movies, by the way
Vic00:34:09It's been popping up on my Twitter this prequel to the movie X Pearl That trailer looks disturbing
Sonny00:34:19Well, so the trailer is trailer
Vic00:34:22It's really I Mean, I'm partly intrigued obviously there's parts of it does other parts that look like wow really dark stuff
JVL00:34:30I said you didn't see act right cross. Let me just tell you Vic I am NOT seeing either X nor policy next but I can already tell you that This is gonna be one of those things where it takes the two quadrants The sex nudity and the violence and it mashes them up in ways that you will not appreciate I
Sonny00:34:49Would the first one the X would have been very high on it would have been a plus in all four quadrants I mean, it's not long. It's like a hundred minutes It's got lots of sex and nudity lots of violence very easy to follow. Okay. I think you would I think you would enjoy it I haven't seen I haven't seen pearl But I I would assume it's not that different In terms of in terms of appeal and it's old time
JVL00:35:16Me. Yes. Well, it's so it's yeah
Sonny00:35:18So like the so X is basically like a Texas Chainsaw Massacre riff more or less something something along those lines And this is more of a like classic Hollywood 1950s Hollywood riff 1940s Hollywood riff which is interesting. I'm curious to see what they do with it But I have not watched it yet. So I don't know. All right, well
Vic00:35:42You know what else is a quad quadrant killer Dirty Harry? Dirty Harry So, you know, it's funny and in my office Josh Josh Christensen was saying that we he likes when we do these old movies I said well you're gonna be in luck This coming up episode because that is what we're doing is Dirty Harry which happens to be now on Netflix this is the movie from 1971 starring Clint Eastwood
JVL00:36:09Sonny Big boy, can I just yes before Sonny starts it? Can I do the starring Clint Eastwood? would Got you to do that starring Clint Eastwood. He's a loose cannon cop who plays by his own rules. That's good That's very good. Sorry, but ever since we started watching and I've been thinking of that
Sonny00:36:32Dirty Harry so dirty it's also on HBO max by the way, so if you if you don't have Netflix, it's also on HBO max I Suggested we do this just because I was literally scrolling through Netflix and we were trying to find something to watch I was like, oh I like Dirty Harry people, you know, it's almost the 50th anniversary. We just missed it. Whatever Yeah, you know we could make we could make cases but uh, so, you know Dirty Harry is In a very real way the movie that's cemented Clint Eastwood as an icon I think even more than like the man with no name trilogy and all that That was like people like the man with no name trilogy obviously was big hit and he had been around for a long time but like Dirty Harry is is the the movie that kind of cements that iconic Grumbly gruff Cop who was a loose cannon, you know thing that basically Clint Eastwood did for 30 years after that Or you know 20 years after this until unforgiven and then still kind of does on and off in in various deconstructive forms You know, the movie setup is very simple Dirty Harry is a he's a detective in San Francisco City is changing around him He does not like the way it's changing. He's got you know minority partners and that sort of thing poppy sign and and he he has to he has to solve the Series of killings by Zodiac Killer by essentially the Zodiac Killer of the the a riff on the Zodiac Killer and You know, he does it and when he catches the guy tortures him for information and then because of the libs On the Supreme Court there, right? It's he gets off It's very He gets off and then he goes and he commits more crimes their Miranda with their Miranda rights. I love so it yeah So obviously this is all amazing and fantastic and true. This is what happened. This is what Miranda has done
JVL00:38:27It's unleashed waves nobody ever gotten waves of Zodiacs of a crime since the Miranda decision
Sonny00:38:36But the But like I the whole thing is wonder and it spawned, you know, this movie spawns not only a whole bunch of Dirty Harry sequels But it spawns like a whole like genre genre of you know Cops who loose-cannon cops who play by their own rules like for instance one that was on it might still be on HBO max I watched it a year or so ago, but it's the Charles Bronson movie 10 to midnight Oh, have you guys have you guys ever watched I watch that it's so this so I want to digress slightly and just talk about 10 to midnight for a second because it is it's like it's like It's it's I'm trying to think of it. It's like idiot Dirty harry If like den of thieves is idiot heat this is like idiot dirty harry like the killer is this like monotonous Like robotic guy who runs around naked all the time for some reason. He's just naked
Vic00:39:27He's not you know one of those Charles Bronson movies the the killer was played by Jim Carrey
Sonny00:39:32But that's not 10 to me. Yeah, not this one. Not not this one, but like in this in this movie, you know, he He essentially he literally just like states the themes of dirty Harry Charles Bronson's like you got all these killers with their rights now. We can't do nothing about it I gotta and and the the final shot in the movie I'm just gonna spoil it here because you you you you will never you will see it coming perfectly But the final shot of the movie is just Charles Bronson shooting this guy in the face from like five feet away is like BAM That's it. That's so anyway Dirty Harry is is is obviously iconic on a bunch of levels. I actually didn't rewatch the movie movie. I rewatched the movie with a With the commentary track by Richard Schickel from the blu-ray. I listened to that. It's really not that good of a commentary track You're not missing out on a ton. He's it's not it's not super informative, but a couple of interesting little tidbits Obviously everybody remembers You know the one thing everybody knows about the critical reaction and the critical response to Dirty Harry is Pauline Kael calling it fascist And basically every every other critic more or less took their their cue from this and it's just kind of it's It is interesting to think about in retrospect because I You get critics trying to call things fascist nowadays And it usually doesn't stick like when people call like people there's a whole group of leftist film critics who call the Marvel movies fascist and like Really is that like that? That's that's a thing. I don't that doesn't that doesn't make sense
JVL00:41:11How the duck harkens back to revanchist patriarchy
Sonny00:41:17Exactly, but the the other thing the other red skull was kind of a fascist I guess He's the villain. I just but it's the one the one the one interesting tidbit from this this Commentary a thing that the commentary that I that I did not know is that Eastwood did all of his own stunts on that bus sequence kidding Where he is it's so like there's this great thing on the end where Dirty Harry jumps on top of The bus and you know the Zodiac killer is zooming all around trying to get him off there It's literally just a stagecoach sequence, and it's but it's no, but well you I mean you see he has experience
JVL00:41:54I mean, it's yeah, no, but it's a Western. Yeah, this is it's good. Yeah I mean it is not an accident that as Westerns were falling out of favor with audiences two of the guys who Who were big in the Western era Charlie Bronson and Clint Eastwood? created an entire Industry of of these movies, you know, but just loose cannon cops who play by their own
Vic00:42:20But basically trans, but but but it's just a different setting. It's the Western. It's the Western
JVL00:42:24We're like in the West wish right like in the Wild West which was you know? Everything is lawless and so this is is transported to a modern world where everything is lawless I mean, I don't want to freak you out But we are about as far away from death wish From death wish from Dirty Harry today as Dirty Harry was from World War one. Yes. Yeah
Vic00:42:49Yes, that is I mean did there were two things JVL. That's the first thing right? That's crazy When you think about I mean you think about because I'm watching this movie and it's like, okay You could sort of relate to what life was like. I mean, you know, I mean, it's not that you know It's just San Francisco and everything else but then to think about 50 years before that here's the here's the thing that I had I was dying to find out and And that is without checking How old Clint Eastwood was? When he did 41 days 40. Yeah for he's younger than us. I look at him and I still feel like he's older than us
JVL00:43:27Well, I mean the Clint Eastwood has never been yeah, I mean he's just he's a hard. Yeah Yeah, I mean it says this is funny. This is Clint When he had learned how to be a movie star, but had not yet learned how to act because his I mean he just The truth is the the do you feel lucky today punk? Speech is terribly delivered the first time like it's an iconic Moment because of what it is and because of the way audiences reacted to it But when you look at it It's it's really Clint Eastwood of 20 years later would do that would do that moment much much better because he learns how to be a Really really good effective on certainly in and this he doesn't quite in is it sudden impact?
Vic00:44:19Where he you know says the famous line go ahead make my day, right? I mean, that's uh, it's funny You should say it when when he first does it during the attempted bank robbery Dirty Harry and he begins a speech. He delivers it kind of fast and sort of just but then at the very end when he's with the score as opposed to Zodiac killer the Scorpio killer Then it's much more Deliberate and of course the ending was going to be different where he actually then gets to fire off the gun It I was gonna I was gonna say it does It's this great little time capsule about what was happening in San Francisco at that time because it is it's like one or two years After the Zodiac killer and the other thing is when you talked about Sonny how it sparked after the summer of love Yes, right and after the that's right all the stuff and when you were talking about how it sparked this whole genre one year after so 1971 is Dirty Harry 1972 was the begin the first season of the streets of San Francisco with Mike Douglas And that's again SF PD, right? I mean, so I mean there was a whole thing about San Francisco police
JVL00:45:30Which is well, San Francisco is the epicenter of that that whole movement, right? I would say there There's a lot to like In it just qua movie But the the two things which would really caught me and probably didn't catch you Sonny because you were listening to commentary track was how spare the sound design was and how it It really brought home the idea of relentless monotonous Forces driving towards you. So the two examples that really hit me were during the bank robbery In the beginning you have no score backing it But you have the bell the bell going off in the background and it doesn't stop like it's you through all of the chaos through all that the bell is just and then in the the roof jumper scene, which is and I can't the whole like people if you are under the age of 35 you do not understand that people threatening to jump off a roof used to be a staple in a movie With cops like a car chase right, right, you know, like every third cop movie had some guy threatening to jump
Sonny00:46:48Building yeah, well these will leave the weapon is like again like kind of a deconstruction of all that Yeah, it's like it's like let's let's get crazy. Let's jump off this roof together
JVL00:46:57Yeah, and I think that's the last time I saw honestly, I think actually that that sort of ended as a don't come near me You know, it's but but so the the scene so Clint Eastwood gets on his character gets on a Ladder ladder a fire truck ladder and there's this relentless sound of the pneumatic Expansion joints and the motors running as he's raised up and they don't shorten at all Like it just it takes forever and you get the sounds of the city around it And it's a again. I just thought it was really really good filmmaking
Sonny00:47:33Well, well one thing that's interesting about this movie at something shickle. It's a punch she'll make so I want to give him credit here But one thing that's interesting about the movie for Is that for how? For how zippy it is and it's a short movie. It's only a hundred two minutes or whatever It is it is weirdly languidly paced. I mean that whole chase through San Francisco where he's going exhausted location a location that that goes on and on and on and it it gets the viewer wrapped Up into it So you're as like frustrated and cranky and tired as Clint is by the time he finally gets this not in a bad way No, like it's no no no no no no no not tired like let's go on an end
JVL00:48:11But you're antsy you're anxious not antsy but anxious. That's exactly right Yeah, the pacing is really really good in it and there are a couple of shots Establishing shots which are great You know in the very very beginning. There's a long pull as Clint is going up onto the rooftop of the first murder and He's walking along and the camera just sort of dollies along with him and gives you the entire panorama of the city and it grounds you in in the place and you know, there was a Is it a helicopter shot? so towards the end of the second out of the stadium when you're in the stadium and he begins to torture and we get a Very fast zoom away and I think in the beginning of it you see a gust of wind Blowing Clint's hair back and I assume that's because this is all done with a helicopter
Sonny00:48:59yeah, yeah that that that shot the only way to do that shot at the time in history would be a Helicopter, it's too big a zoom to do with a crane. You could not you will it but it also doesn't have the flattening Effect of a zoom it wasn't it wasn't a zoom out Certainly, and it wasn't it wasn't it wasn't a crane because the crane it goes all the way out of the stadium I mean you're you're going back a long long way and I really like that. I love that shot
JVL00:49:23I thought it's a great way to transition out of that moment and into what becomes the third act and
Sonny00:49:30Yeah, I mean it's a movie. It's a movie of like giant wide shot establishing shots with like the 1970s kind of paranoid thrillers. Yeah, but like you know
Vic00:49:40Vic did you love I oh yes, I've seen it. I've seen it before and it is a quadrant killer The plot of course is an a-plus. There's a killer
JVL00:49:48He's doing terrible things and you don't even have to like they show you who the killer. Yeah, there's no mystery
Vic00:49:54It's not like oh my gosh. It's the chief. You know or it's the DA And you know it's so it's it's it's it's Chico Duration is an a-plus right it's it's it's short our 40 action and violence Isn't a here's the other interesting thing and I wonder you ever noticed there was a turning point in the use of these sort of the blood in movies at this time and these color movies because I think it's the same thing with the Wild Bunch and Other movies the blood that they used was extremely bright red and now I mean not counting CGI blood But the blood that you see in a lot of other movies now, it looks like real blood
Sonny00:50:39Well, if you see If you see blood now, if you see blood you saving private you're you're you're barely getting any of it because like the most You know most movies are trying to get a pg-13 it's hard to get a pg-13 with with with you know showing any sort of blood and also like The Chinese market is very antsy about that sort of thing. They don't they don't like having real blood But I mean, you know back in the I mean remember not too long after this a couple years after this Taxi driver comes out and one of the ways they got it down from an NC 17 was they had to Saturate the final shootout they had to like they had to mute the colors because it was like it was too bright The the sensors were like this is right horrifying. We can't you know So it they they they turned it back down to like a more brownish
Vic00:51:23Blood that's interesting because it does it has this kind of I don't know it felt like very much of a painted Blood look to it But still great action and sex nudity is an a-plus there there was you saw the full thing and and just a lot of casual nudity and that's what I want to say
JVL00:51:40Right we get the the fat girl. Oh, man, and then we get the the dead girl. They pull out of them
Vic00:51:45Yeah, but there's also the one there's the girl in the apartment. Yes, there's like a party going on and he's watching this and then and then He's with Chico and the thing is it just you know, the truth is it's not hard to be a quadrant killer You just kind of throw it in there. Just think randomly like oh you're looking with your binoculars. Oh, hey, look at this And I love it because they call what did they call her? Did that when he they could keep Clint Eastwood's a hot Mary a peeping Tom? They called her hot Mary and it's like this Asian hot Mary
Sonny00:52:19No, wait, there was so there there's hot Mary then there's the there's the other
Vic00:52:24There's a party in the room party or something
Sonny00:52:27Just walk. She's just walking around naked and then there's a couple like go-go bars. Yeah, and they're all and those are man
Vic00:52:34Those those you know, that was a different time you look at those bodies. That was it if they weren't as Fixated on doing Pilates and and you know, you know what? I kept thinking back. What did you think as we kept seeing?
JVL00:52:47Downtown San Francisco is just covered with peep show. Yes Yes, I look at that and I think about real estate prices per square foot. Oh, yeah
Vic00:52:57No from then to today. Yeah, it's a weird. It's a weird thing because I mean certainly reflecting sort of the feeling at the time if you go a little bit earlier before then and Movies like, you know vertigo and and how the the nice San Francisco and you start wondering when did that change? And why and how did that happen? You could see the dance right because it promotes all sorts of vice Elements when you have these things and it was it was the peep shows the strip clubs the porno theaters and an adult bookstores you saw that as an adult books books I what I yeah, I went in there because I was looking for Tropic of Cancer That's that's why I went in there but and all that stuff essentially not the strip clubs But essentially everything else just basically migrated to the Internet Which is its own sort of right? I mean, there's no that's true of everything
JVL00:53:54I mean you can't I mean there are there still are adult books I guess you know like you you pass them when you're driving the Pulaski Highway Route 40 Vic when you're heading from Jersey to DC and you're taking route 40. You're gonna pass yourself. It's still there
Sonny00:54:09It's still a you know, uh, is that the road to Atlantic City? No, no, do you take 40 to Atlantic?
Vic00:54:15Oh, that's the other one. Yeah, that's the different 40. So a very good memory though. Good memory No, and I remember I mean, I think it's been about it's been 10 years since I was in San Francisco And I don't remember seeing any of those sort of peep shows and adult bookstores, which is why I stopped going there. But Anyway, JVL or maybe and sunny - but I know JVL is more like this Did you feel uncomfortable at all with the whole thing with kids in in the style of a sunny feels the same way? I guess because it's a kind of thing that you don't see much in movies anymore and it's it's it's harrowing and I think because of You know the what kids the state of things now like kids as school bus hostages. It's kind of kind of you know, it's it's
JVL00:55:02You know, so like if it had been the kid who was buried in the well Then I would have been freaked out but for like a You know for what is essentially a stagecoach ride as I said, you know, wait. Yeah, that's right That with kids on the bus you are all because I that's just like that's just a piece, you know
Sonny00:55:21yeah, that that didn't that didn't bug me - again, I've been watching it with the commentary track on but like that that scene has never bothered me that much just because We all know what's coming. Yeah, we all know what's coming to the Zodiac. Um, I I just there there is one interesting little Colonel there so have you guys have you you guys have seen the sequel right Magnum Force? I mean not in for So so the you know the the reaction to the first movie caught Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood kind of unawares They were not expecting to be called like Don Siegel the director Don Siegel the director, you know, they were not they were not expected to be called, you know Awful fascists for like making this this, you know out of control cop movie and The next movie in the series remember has the the villains are like other cops, right? The cops who have like created a hit squad and are going around San Francisco and taking out You know the bad people the bad sword and that movie is like it's almost Dishonest in a certain way because it is it's it's Eastwood and I think that made it might have even been John Milius Directed that I wrote it. I think he's one of the versions of Dirty Harry. So Milius and John Milius and
JVL00:56:38Terrence Malick. Yeah, I think the Milius version was basically thrown out and what they shot was the first draft basically. Yeah. Yeah
Sonny00:56:48But the but like the there's I I feel like people Reacted more honestly to the first one than the second one because this the second one is like no wait Look, this is this is what actual police fascism looks like, you know, we're not Dirty Harry's not a bad guy He's just you know, he's just playing by his own rules. These are the real this is what this is where it and I've always just Felt like that was like a weird form of ass covering Yeah, like just some years later just do the thing do the thing
Vic00:57:14Did you I got the I got the little joke by the way where he walks around the corner and you see in the movie Theater, it's playing play Misty for me. Oh
JVL00:57:22Is that what I was wondering? I missed that a little this is the first movie he did after that, isn't it? I think this is the first movie. Yes, I believe so
Vic00:57:30So and you were talking about how great that the musical score is so distinct and that's because it's Lalo Schifrin, right? Who also did Mission Impossible and entered the dragon which is a very underrated sounds a lot
JVL00:57:44like the the riff that they use throughout Thor Ragnarok ah Wow. Yeah
Vic00:57:53Like the scarier segments there
Sonny00:57:5771 in 1971 Don Siegel and Clint Eastwood made two films together They made they made this and also the beguiled. No, I guess I've ever seen the beguiled but the beguiled is about a a Union soldier who gets stranded in a southern plantation during the Civil War But the plantation only has like five women in it and he sets about Seducing and manipulating and controlling them and like it's it's again. It's a very different sort of movie I read this in one of those books I purchased at the adult bookstore. It's it's it's not it is not like Dirty Harry at all Yes, but it's I mean again
Vic00:58:37What was it? What was what was the what does it say on the poster for that movie begot? Was it like the sass shall rise again now?
Sonny00:58:47Yes, that was it I had some other I had so I know what we're
Vic00:58:51We're near our time. I had some other thoughts and I can't find out I've lost. Oh, yeah Um, you know and when I first saw it, I was I remember not being that happy with the actor who plays the villain I thought I wish they had somebody who is more substantial, but then
JVL00:59:07On second viewing I think it fit. He and his name was Andy Andy Robbins instantly hateable. Yes, so instead. That's right. That's right
Vic00:59:15And I think that's all you want from this particular character is that I don't need to and you certainly Don't want we don't know anything about us. Yes. No, it's not We have to hate him without that's right. And he's perfect. He has his most hateable face and and so he he does that Well, I was so whiny in his mind in contrast to John Malkovich and in the line of fire
JVL00:59:36well, that's They have it both ways with him where he's this incredible shot And then he's super dangerous with his machine gun that never needs to be reloaded You come at Scorpio. Yes, Corbett, but he's also whiny little bitch Yeah, and that I will say this is a movie which has no interest in Presenting firearms in anything resembled looking a realistic. Yeah
Sonny01:00:07That would be different now with the exception of his steps revolver except for the first the first of last Shootout with the 44 Magnum in which he is very explicitly making the point about counting bullets Which I would imagine is like the only thing saved from the Milius draft Like a Milius speech right there. I don't know if it is or not
JVL01:00:25This movie is a this is there are very few movies that are so completely of the moment that it becomes Impossible to really disentangle them from yeah from the world that they were born into This is one of those. Yeah, it captures. Yeah
Vic01:00:40Okay, do we have any other thoughts? Corrections shoutouts. No, okay Wow That's all the time. He and I either Iraq or Afghanistan It was I think in 2007, so he's been wheelchair-bound But he went on this interstellar mission done obtaining Yeah, the body that you're not gonna believe a link to so that he was able to stand up for the first time Using this sort of I'm not gonna call it bionic technology But it's certainly this sort of you put braces on your legs and waist and on your back it was developed in Israel and Now he can stand up and walk. I mean he has to Use the crutches like you know if people who had polio do the you know the the crutches But he's walking for the first time and he was explained so they asked like well How does it work and he says well? You know I mean you you strap it on the legs and your your waist and your back and the computer is on your back And I thought to myself Isn't this how dr. Octopus?
Sonny01:02:28Well is it like is it connected to his is it connected to it?
Vic01:02:33That's unclear. I don't think so, but I don't know how It knows that he needs to move but in my mind I'm imagining that it's like connected to his spine, and then they're like well
Sonny01:02:42Let me just try to read jigger this you know oh now well when the when the thing blows up And he gets fused to it. It's gonna be bad. I'm sure it's fine
