The hosts split hard on David Leitch's Bullet Train: Sonny disliked it, arguing the constant flashbacks kill momentum and the plot is needlessly overcomplicated when all he wanted was ninety straight minutes of people fighting on a train, though he singles out Brian Tyree Henry and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's bickering twins as the strongest part of the movie; JVL loved it — he went out and bought the source novel Maria Beetle by Kotaro Isaka, argues Leitch's changes (recasting the all-Japanese assassins as American, British, and Russian) make the characters far more interesting than in the book, and ties the whole film together via the old Chinese fable about fate and the farmer's horse; Vic was more mixed, scoring it Plot C, Duration F, Action/Violence A-, Sex/Nudity C on his Quadrant, complaining the wall-to-wall pop soundtrack gave him a headache and that the two-hour movie felt like five, while still laughing hard throughout at bits like the toilet gag and the quiet-car assassin. Vic00:22:04that coming up i had a a separate uh anecdote i wanted to tell now that we're on well we're 20 minutes in uh i was uh up in connecticut and down in jersey and actually sort of spur the moment managed to sneak in a few days in cape may which i absolutely love uh and uh two things one they used to have a trolley that was a free service everybody loved it the trolley has been discontinued but a lot of the hotel services and areas all a bunch of the b&b's they all use golf carts now to go up and down the town and so we like oh we got to go because it's like a mile and a half or whatever if it's hot and you want to walk just take the thing um these golf carts go 25 miles an hour which uh you know when you're in a car it's slow when you're in a golf cart that's all the wind that is the wind whipping through oh you feel it it's great it's fantastic okay here's the other thought my other my other thought was um so we stayed at our the usual place and we loved it was the only place that was the only room that was available and it was wedged in uh between two uh very big italian families uh celebrating like an oni's birthday or something you know what i mean it's like they usually have these things where they all get together love italian families the bad news is they were from philadelphia philly i'm kidding i don't have nothing against philly italians no i'm joking but they were all from philly sitting around families listening to their philly's baseball game on the radio

JVL00:31:10i have never seen it was a four screen amc which is labeled as an amc classic i don't know what that means except that uh that's like a pre-multiplex design so it is it's pretty multiplex i believe it was put into this is what's interesting so the theaters themselves uh the seats were all new they were reasonably comfortable but nothing they were not stadium it was the old style seating you know just like gradually uh sloped from front to back um so like no buttons for reclining or anything it's no buttons for no but no no buttons were inclined just normal it was like normal seats but nice normal seats you know like like not sticky they they felt very new uh not sticky the the you have to be of a certain age to appreciate that one the screen quality was okay it was a small screen i mean all all four theaters are quite small i was in the largest of the auditoriums and the concessions offerings are just popcorn and candy no like all the other you know pretzel bites nachos with cheese they don't have any of that i don't even got their own popcorn they're pulling the popcorn out of big bags you know not like most amcs they've got like little pop yeah yeah of course um so it was uh but i believe this building uh was originally a car dealership and had been converted from a car dealership into a movie theater whatever why do you say that um because i i was just looking at the layout of the property and then uh overhearing a another patron talking with one of the two staffers i believe the entire theater was staffed by two people

Sonny00:34:56director david leach who uh co-directed the first john wick movie and directed deadpool 2. uh he is a stunt guy by trade who has gotten into directing founded the studio 87 11 the really like the fight group 87 11 they're the guys who designed all of the fights in the john wick movies that studio is seven north whatever like point is uh this is this movie is basically uh it's like it's like john wick on a train as reimagined in a sort of snatch like way it's like guy ritchie inflected um with a with a smattering of deadpool smarm to it um uh so bullet train is a true ensemble picture in that there are you could you could make the argument that brad pitt is the lead but i don't think he actually is the lead in this movie the real lead in this movie uh are two the two guys who play the twins brian tyree henry and uh aaron taylor johnson and these two guys tangerine and lemon right so the the basic plot of the movie is uh a the the head of the japanese mafia who is a russian emigre for some reason um uh his son has been kidnapped these two twins have recovered the as well as the 10 million dollars in in ransom money that the uh the right the remnant of the japanese mob had demanded uh for for his return uh and they have to get the sun and the briefcase back to this uh mob boss the white death uh who i i got yelled at because i said who he was uh so i don't spoilers maybe you mean that it was played by michael sheehan that he was played by michael shannon yeah but he's in the trailer i mean if you saw the trailer he's in the trailer why would you get yelled at for that i don't know people are anyway uh so brad pitt is on the train to grab the briefcase with 10 million dollars in it there are a bunch of other assassins who show up on the train and they're all we they all get their introductions and their stories they they want the case of money but there's a there's a deeper secret here there's a darker story it's all convoluted there's a there's a sassy young girl who you know is clearly uh hiding some sort of mystery and then there's a japanese father whose son has been pushed off a roof of a department store and he is there to get revenge against the pusher um and his grandfather or his father shows up Hiroki Sonata played by the great Hiroki Sonata um he shows up and he's a uh i so here here's the thing about this movie is that it again it's it's like it's like fights designed by the john wick guys and there are some kind of cool fights in this that are all premised on essentially every fight in this movie is premised on an idea like the the fight with brad pitt and the mexican hitman who comes to kill him it's played by the the singer i guess bad bunny he's like that's his actual name i don't know yeah um uh is like what if what if brad pitt brought a briefcase to a knife fight like kind of a cool idea yeah there's the space of the train it's like there's there's an interesting idea or there's another there's another great sequence that's like what if you had a mexican standoff uh but it was with a poisonous snake and you had to get the and you have to get the the like again like kind of interesting stuff most of that works okay it is inflected with the tone of a guy ritchie movie uh again the movie that kept coming to mind for me was snatch because it's really kind of unnecessarily complicated and all comes together at the end and it also has a smattering of smoke and aces in this the joe carnahan movie with all that i don't know if you guys have seen that but it's this movie with all these crazy assassins who are converging on uh trying to kill an informant for the fbi who turns out to have this long convoluted family history with a mobster i like all of those movies a lot i did not like this movie i did not like it did not work for me it's it the momentum of it is all wrong uh all of the fight scenes are very good and then we flash back and it just slams it gets rid of all the momentum that you've built up it it destroys everything it is unnecessarily complicated in ways that like tarantino does and it's kind of interesting or guy ritchie does and it's kind of interesting or again joe carnahan does it's kind of interesting not interesting here it doesn't work doesn't work for me it just is like oh look at they're all here for a reason yeah i don't care i don't care if they're all here for a reason i just want to see people fight that's all i want i want a 90 minute version of this movie where they're just fighting on the train well it's also

Sonny00:39:53that's yeah that's like i i don't need everything to be interconnected in the story i it's fine with me if they're just like random dudes showing up to steal stuff that would be okay but they are all connected they're all connected to the white death he has to you know whatever um so anyway i didn't i didn't like this movie and i wanted to like it i i was really into the first 30 minutes or so it's like yeah yeah and then it just lost me because it kept kept flashing back kept breaking up the the story um the stuff that is cute like the thomas the tank engine so the one of the twins the guy played by brian tyree henry just describes everybody as characters from thomas the tank engine it's kind of funny it's tarantino ass gets you guy richie i like it didn't did not care for the whole thing i feel bad i wanted to like it a lot didn't jvl what did you think
JVL00:40:43i uh i really liked it and i i really liked it all the way until last 10 minutes at which point i felt like the lights was just having trouble landing the plane yeah well you just didn't know how to how to finish the movie but the next morning when i woke up uh i found that that complaint no longer really mattered to me and i liked it even more and i liked it so much that i went and picked out the now picked up the novel that it was based on um so it's it's based on a reading it at the beach yeah it's uh it's called maria beetle by kotaro isaka is that oh is that did i pronounce it you pronounced that perfectly uh it's uh and this is one of the very few instances in which uh i think a very good movie has been made out of a very mediocre book and the the book has almost no and here here i this may not be fair because what i'm reading is is a translation from a japanese novel and so maybe you know maybe maybe everything is just better in the original japanese um but it is not a very dynamic story uh and what leitch has done with his screenwriter whose name i'm forgetting um is taken the very the barest bones of the plot and then augmented it by by adding like real character work to it uh and and changing the characters and filling them out and fleshing them out and then adding a central idea to it which is the the idea of fate and what fate and luck mean and what they do and uh i don't know if you guys know that there was there was a there's like a stupid woke white washing argument about about bullet train during production i missed that uh which was that uh how dare they take this uh this this story in which all of the characters are japanese uh in the novel and and cast them as uh an american two brits in the twins and then two russians in in the prince and uh and the white death and in the in the book everybody is japanese um and the answer is because this version of the story is is infinitely more interesting and because it serves a purpose we are not casting no it's not even that it's a i mean so tangerine and lemon are are british gangsters in the guy ritchie mold in a fish out of water situation which is hysterical uh the character of ladybug who is vastly different from from the book in the book he's like basically woody allen he's so neurotic and this it's a very american like just a guy in recovery trying to therapy his way through to a better self-help self-improvement sort of thing right the yeah strong strong gen x californian vibe yeah and but again this version of the character is is infinitely more interesting and has to be american in order for it to work and then for the the prince and the white death uh the prince who in this is is a girl played by joey king she is motivated by patricide uh which is a very russian sort of thing and uh the white death himself his entire character arc is all about the fact that he is a russian who's risen to the top of a japanese crime organization right i mean this is it is you know whatever the op whatever the inverse of xenophobia is where he is terrified and hates all of the japanese people around him yeah anyway and then the whole idea i mean you guys have heard like the the the old chinese parable right about the father and the son of the horse uh you know a chinese father has has a son and a horse and the horse runs away and his neighbors come to over and say oh bad luck and the father says oh yeah too soon to tell and the horse comes back and he brings other wild horses with him and the neighbors say well this is good luck and the father says yeah too soon to tell you know then the sun falls goes riding on the wild horse and falls off and cripples himself and the the neighbors has bad luck and he says too soon to tell and then war breaks out and the sun doesn't get conscripted into it because of his injury and uh and he's like oh good luck this is that's everything that this is and it's all made very very clear at the end when we learn that the white death's motivation throughout the entire thing is that he is fighting not against anything else but against fate because he believes that if you do not master fate then fate will master you and what bullet train is really about is showing the folly of that idea that there is there is no way to master fate like it's just it is going to be what is going to be and all of that i just you know like it's not the deep est thing in the world but combined with the high style and the it's very funny it's deeply deeply funny my one of my favorite bits in the entire movie uh so the wolf shows up onto this train because he is there to kill the assassin who killed everybody at his wedding including his bride now brad pitt's character was also at this wedding he was also working he was there to do something different and at the wedding he bumped into the wolf he was he was a waiter he was disguised as a waiter and spilled red wine over this garish white leather tuxedo and the wolf like was going to murder him at his wedding because he was so angry about it and here when the wolf shows up on the train and sees him he is equally excited to kill brad pitt's character in revenge for having spilled wine on his white suit as he is to kill the assassin for murdering his his wife that's hysterical i thought he just thought brad pitt was responsible for poisoning no because he has the picture of of zazie beats with him he's got the picture of zazie beats he is he is just excited to kill brad pitt for because of the wine
Sonny00:46:59can i it's hysterical question can i can i ask a plot mechanics question here because it's something that i i had missed in the theater and i haven't been able to ask anybody um everybody who is brought to the train is brought there because the white they have wronged the white death in some way so the the twins were part of the bolivian job right where they killed a bunch of guys and that's why the white death had to go and that's why his wife ended up dying right correct his son is there because he got arrested and that's where the the wife was going to the hornet is there uh because she had killed the surgeon
JVL00:47:32who could have killed the surgeon who could have saved her right right why was why was the wolf there the wolf was only there because the wolf was not there as part of the white death's plan the wolf shows up because he is independently tracking the hornet the assassin for all to also exact his own revenge and so he shows up to also kill her that's a plot mistake
Sonny00:47:54that's that is that is a he has to be there on the white death's urging he has to be there because of the white death he doesn't sure he does why if it's if it's all about him trying to bring all of these people together to wipe them to wipe each other out i mean the whole point of all of them being there is for them to wipe each other out and then he takes white death you know finishes the job or whatever like he can't just be there randomly and show up that that doesn't
JVL00:48:23work the old lady in the quiet car fishing them is also just like they're randomly it's i don't i mean you know the the quiet car humor it's very very funny the the bit where uh tangerine and lemon when we first meet tangerine and lemon they're sitting in their seats and uh uh stortus is coming down the line with a snack trolley and uh tangerine just nicks two snacks off of it and lemon is trying to don't steal don't you and tangerine is like i'm sorry i can't it's just a compulsion i have to steal things and he goes and looks at them and things he has stolen are some sort of like japanese crackers made out of goldfish not not the american pepper farm goldfish that are crackers shaped like these are crackers made out of goldfish it's like the reaction to that is the most classic british goldfish biscuits or something it's great i just the whole movie is filled with little gray stones like that and i just i love

Vic00:53:46and they did nothing with it for you no and and you know i hope that she gets nominated for like whoever does the costuming should get nominated because that's a great outfit um i saw this movie i i went on a date uh and then she was not my wife her name was paul crookston and uh and paul uh and i uh paul had said that it sort of had this strong film school vibe that he thought it was like and i thought my sense my vibe was that it was trying too hard uh and so that was part of it and the other part is i thought it was like a cameo overload it was like the masked singer and it was literally the mass cigarette zazie beats his game but then you have ryan reynolds in the end that was just sort of throw away and of course i knew it was sandra bullock and then they have to explain it the whole thing i have mixed feelings about the end when michael shannon is explaining everything because on the one hand it's a really long villain monologue about here's my life story i'm going to tell to you before i kill you on the other hand you know me i need all the help i can get it wraps up all the loose ends well yeah because i'm like okay i'm beginning to understand this um but uh again i just felt like i don't know it was it was a combination of you know it's funny you said snatch i said lock stock but basically snatch you know these brit sort of gangster buddy movies and and uh and partly that and other things and uh the stuff i

Sonny01:01:15my my oven story real quick oh yes so my i i so i i think i mentioned this on the show before but the people who lived in my house before me put in like a professional grade kitchen like very very nice appliances the the appliances the stove and the oven are decor d-a-c-o-r possibly decor i don't know uh but it's like a step down from viking but a step up from you know kitchenaid or whatever uh jealous um and uh and there's a sub-zero fridge like a fridge and freezer combo like again it's built in it's it's all very very nice it's like insanely expensive the amount of money that they spent on whatever they spent remodeling it is just unconscionable and i never would have done it but it this has been very nice for me because i like having a semi almost professional grade kitchen until we we the glass in one of the double ovens because it's a double oven yes the glass in the top double oven was cracked when we moved in finally shattered bro it like broke entirely and so i start i was like ah we're gonna have to replace so i start googling around turns out they don't make uh this model of double oven anymore doesn't exist the decor or double oven the decor double oven uh and they don't have replace there's no replacement part i'm like googling around i can't find the replacement parts so we call a guy and he comes out and he's like yeah i'm gonna look but i cannot uh promise you that i'll be able to find the parts so then i just start like i start looking around i'm like well how much would a new can i just get one oven turns out you can't get one oven when you got a double oven you gotta you gotta replace both at the same time that's the that these do not come in separate pieces no they don't uh um uh and i was like well how much would it cost to replace it with a similar oven uh worth like five or six thousand dollars five or six thousand dollars for and i'm just like well that's that's that's absurd that's an absurd amount of money uh so i've got like my fingers crossed and fingers crossed and eventually eventually the guy comes back he's like thank god i found i found the glass pack it'll be 500 bucks to fix it and like 500 bucks still feels very expensive but i was like thank god thank god thank god uh but anyway it was just like it was just this weird creeping horror and then acceptance because i start i start doing shop the shopping in my head i'm like well you know if i have to get a new double oven let's just look at let's look at what the things cost you know let's start go down start shopping this is the problem with no no

Sonny01:04:14no no no i and like the the sub-zero fridge has its own issues which is that we we have to replace the the like uh you know the lining the the weather stripping or whatever it is that's on the inside and i have the appliance guy out and he's like oh that's very expensive like what what do you mean it's just it's just a piece of plastic and he he shows it to me and there it's like bolted in in 30 places he's got to go and like i was like why would you put a professional quality fridge into a house like this why would you do it why would you do it so anyway well no he was so like that will actually replacing that will actually end up being more expensive than fixing the uh the oven was when i but JBL you said that you had a similar thing with your with your oven when you guys were
JVL01:05:01moving out as we were moving out the uh the contractor who was handling a few things uh broke broke the oven was was pulling the oven out from the wall to paint behind it and anyway the point is what broke was a small paper clip size plastic uh piece inside the oven door which like held the door and the glass to it and uh there is evidently no way to fix that like you just they don't make that anymore and they don't make that 27 cents that 27 cent piece and so otherwise this oven is great i love this oven you know i would it's very expensive and so we had to like on one day's notice replace an oven and range that we would never use because of a 27 cent
