#128. 'Thor: Love and Thunder'

2022-07-15 · 1:01:41

Listen to this episode ↗on Substack, where the show lives now

The main event is Thor: Love and Thunder, and it's a rare unanimous dud: Sonny, who can't stand Taika Waititi's shtick and calls the movie's story structurally broken (you could cut half the plot and change nothing about the ending), says he's glad it made $144 million because it means more "crap like this"; Vic calls it "largely mixed negative" and complains the trailers falsely sold it as a Guardians of the Galaxy team-up movie; and JVL, who thought it was "pretty good actually" while watching, admits that within two hours he couldn't remember a single thing he liked, calling it one of the most disposable MCU entries yet. Vic's Quadrant lands on Duration C, Action a "gentleman's" B, and Sex/Nudity C, and he floats his own theory for why Jane Foster got Mjolnir (traces of Thor were already in her). The one thing everyone agrees works is Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher, who all three say looks like he wandered in from a far better, creepier movie — JVL recounts taking his son G-Money to the IMAX 3D show and having to flee during the shadow-tentacle fight when G-Money begged, "Dad, I do not want to stay for this" — plus Russell Crowe's broadly comic, Greek-diner-owner take on Zeus. The opening third is dominated by Prime Day spoils and temptations: JVL's near-purchase of a self-recirculating "nugget ice" maker and a lecture on replacing Sonicare brush heads, Sonny's new Sonicare and a three-pack of 4K Kubrick Blu-rays, and Vic's haul of Joan Didion books plus a rewatch of First Blood and Rambo back to back (giving Rambo an A+++ on duration alone). There's also box office chat (Thor's huge open masking Disney's underlying weakness, Nope and Bullet Train looming, Minions, Top Gun: Maverick still going strong, Lightyear cratering), a long JVL riff on Nuvi pitchwoman Maria Menounos, and the show closes on its recurring James Webb Space Telescope stinger, with Sonny ranting that the new images are barely distinguishable from Hubble's and demanding NASA put a man on Mars instead.

From the show notes

Celebrating Prime Day and complaining about the latest MCU movie.

Sonny00:00:00"Kids get to pop corner. Let me tell you the story of the Space Viking, Thor Odinson. He was no ordinary man. He was a god. After saving planet Earth for the 500th time, Thor set off on a new journey. He got in shape. He went from dad bod to god bod. And after all that, he reclaimed his title.
Guest00:00:30As the one and only Thor." "Oh, spoke too soon." "Jane?"

JVL, what is going on?
JVL00:01:07"Blessed Prime Day to both of you. Did you guys..."
Sonny00:01:12"All hail the sacrifice made by Optimus, giving up his spark so the rest of us might live."
JVL00:01:18"So this will come out on Friday, after Prime Day. We are taping on Wednesday, the second day of Prime." "Yes."
Sonny00:01:26"You know, I kind of feel like..." "The holiest day of Prime."
JVL00:01:28"I kind of feel..." "So that's a first question." "Which day of Prime do you think is better, day one or day two?" "And why couldn't there be, like Hanukkah, eight days of Prime?"
Sonny00:01:38"Well, the thing about..."
JVL00:01:39"Eight crazy nights!"
Sonny00:01:41"The first day of Prime, for me, is the day dedicated to consumerism." "That's when I do most of my shopping." "The second day is the day I like to sit back and reflect on all..."
JVL00:01:54"You don't keep buying things?"
Sonny00:01:56"All that Bezos and Optimus have given us." "Over the years." "No, I usually do all my shopping the first day." "Unless there's some great lightning deal that comes up." "Sometimes that happens."
JVL00:02:06"Do you watch the Prime, like the Amazon version of QVC?" "Which they stream to your phone, starting on Prime." "It's like Kevin Hart." "They get people who are like giant stars." "Just on the Prime show, talking about all the great lightning deals." "That's the power of Bezos."
Sonny00:02:23"What's the power of having a 17 trillion dollar company?"
JVL00:02:26"I bought so many things."
Sonny00:02:28"What did you buy? What did you buy, David?"
JVL00:02:30"I just got a bunch of a couple mattresses." "Mattresses?"
Sonny00:02:38"You buy mattresses from Amazon?"
JVL00:02:41"We came this close, this close to buying a countertop ice maker." "Which, I don't know if you guys have seen this." "It is to go on your countertop and it makes a pound of ice an hour." "But it claims that it's like the good ice." "I forget what they, like the ice briquettes or the, not cubes." "It's something, something fancy." "Not spheres." "Some fancy kind of like really good ice." "But it's basically, are you using just filtered water?" "And I think so, but here's the deal." "It's always full of ice because as the ice on the bottom melts." "Because it's not a freezer or anything, it's just making fresh ice." "And as ice that's in this thing melts, it goes down." "It sluices through a grate and then gets recirculated and turned into new ice."
Sonny00:03:31"And there's a, there's an internet enabled version of it." "I'm sorry, we need to, I want to back up a little bit." "So this is, it just sits on your countertop." "And it constantly makes ice."
JVL00:03:44"New ice, you're always getting fresh ice." "On your countertop." "You never have to have ice that's two hours old, like a farmer."
Vic00:03:50"Well what happens to the ice that you don't use?" "It melts."
JVL00:03:54"So the ice you don't use, it melts." "And goes through the floor, the sluice grating." "And is then sucked back into the ice maker to be reconstituted as fresh ice."
Sonny00:04:05"I don't, I don't..."
JVL00:04:06"24 pounds of ice per day."
Sonny00:04:09"I'm not a green." "Bluetooth enabled." "As you guys know." "I'm not a, I'm not like a, but that seems like an awful waste of energy." "Just to be constantly making ice that is then..."
JVL00:04:19"Oh I'm sorry, was it a waste of energy to send the web telescope into space?" "I mean surely you could have used that energy in some other ways, right?"
Sonny00:04:28"We'll talk, we'll talk about that in a minute." "Hold on, I got thoughts on that." "But uh, but no, I just don't quite understand." "I have one conspiracy thought on that, but we'll save that." "I don't quite understand why..."
JVL00:04:37"It's the GE Profile Opal."
Vic00:04:39"Oh my gosh."
JVL00:04:41"I'm looking it up right now and they make a Bluetooth enabled one." "So the, the one for the poor people is $429." "That's the one that you can't control with your smartphone." "The one with your smartphone that you control with your smartphone." "Which is important because I have two dehumidifiers running in this house." "And they're both Bluetooth enabled, they're connected to my smart hub." "It's amazing." "I don't want to be that technologically dependent, it's frightening." "I love it." "It's, oh it's the Opal Nugget." "Wait till the EMP." "Here, ready for this?" "The Nugget Ice Maker." "Nugget Ice." "Pellet Ice." "Nugget Ice is the best." "Drive-In Ice." "Nugget Ice is the best." "Whatever you call it, you know it's the good ice." "Those soft yet crunchy nuggets." "Nugget Ice is the best." "Almost like tiny snowballs that float in your favorite beverage." "Now that chewable ice is available from the convenience of your countertop with the GE Profile Opal." "You know, we're taping, I still have three more hours, two and a half more hours of Prime." "Maybe I'll just do it."
Sonny00:05:40"Do it live on the show."
JVL00:05:42"You should, you should do it live on the show."
Sonny00:05:44"Could you imagine that?" "Proceed to checkout." "Then you can write it off on your taxes, because it's a bit." "It is a bit." "It's a bit on the show." "Good luck with that." "You can write it off on your taxes."
JVL00:05:53"Good luck with that." "Just write it off, Jerry."
Sonny00:05:55"Yeah." "Just write it off. This is an expense. You're entertaining the people by buying the Opal." "Well, I appreciate." "I don't think you're not going to get audited for that, my friend."
Vic00:06:04"No, not at all, when they check out your home office. I appreciate having good ice, because if you have ice from the fridge, the one that just makes it, when the ice melts, it smells. And, you know, it's like a metallic smell, because it's coming from, you know, is that also going through the filter, or is that just directly, basically, from the tap?" "No." "So, what we have, we had an ice maker, and then it died, and then we went to the trays, which I don't mind, because I fill the tray up with the filtered water, and it's delicious. It's very nice ice cubes, old school style, with the tray, except for, you know, fill up the bucket with ice." "We've talked about this before." "And other people, but other kids will not do it, and you've got to be on them about, 'Hey, the bucket is empty. What am I supposed to do now?' So, fill up..."
Sonny00:06:50"I forget, I always forget that you live in..." "1975." "Like, Hoboken, New Jersey, circa 1956." "Yes, that's right.
Vic00:06:57So, we have the ice trays, we use the ice trays, but here's the weirdest part. From time to time, the ice maker in the fridge will suddenly fill up with ice, like, it'll be like a year later, and it's working again, and then it goes, disappears. It's like the ice maker of awakenings." "The Willingham tooth." "It is the awakenings of ice makers, and then we had, like, we had a power outage, this is, like, a couple weeks ago, and then when the power outage started..." "When the power came on, it just started making ice again." "The next day, my son opens the fridge and goes, 'Oh, there's ice back here. I used it. Ignore the black specks.' I said, 'Ignore the black specks.'" "It's fine.
JVL00:07:30It's fine. You know, I don't need to use filtered water because my water comes from a well underneath my house." "Oh, you do the well, yes." "And so, it is some of the best tasting water I've ever had. And I can only imagine how good the nugget ice from my well water would taste." "Sonny looks skeptical of the well water from New Jersey."
Vic00:07:45"Oh, that's delicious." "Look at the look on his face."
Sonny00:07:47"Delicious." "I'm sorry. You have a well right next to your septic tank?"
JVL00:07:51"I'm pretty sure they're separated by at least five or six feet."
Sonny00:07:54"No. No, thank you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm not interested."
JVL00:08:00"Tastes like dogs."
Sonny00:08:01"I'm not interested in having my poop ice. All right? That's not a thing I want anywhere near my food or drink." "There's a slight yellowish tinge."
JVL00:08:11"All right. So, I'm going to ask a serious question. A serious question. I have never once abused my Prime membership. Never once." "I don't know what that means. What does that mean? To abuse your Prime?" "Lending it to somebody? Giving it to somebody who doesn't have Prime?" "What it means is ordering something you know you're not going to keep. That you know you're going to send back." "Oh my gosh." "Just have it in the house and open it up and see what it's all about. Should I order the GE Opal Nugget Ice Maker?" "You can use it and then send it back is what you're saying." "Maybe I won't use it. Maybe I'll just take it out of the box and look at it and see."
Sonny00:08:49"I don't think it's abusing Prime to get it and see if you like it. If you get it and you like it and you keep it, that's fine. If you send it back, Amazon is built on like a no questions asked return policy. And if you get it and you don't like it, I don't think that that's abusing Prime. What would be abusing Prime is if you got it for like a party, you bought it for a party and then you're like, ah, you know what? I don't like it. And then you send it. That would be abusing it." "The frozen margarita right now, which is what you're doing."
Vic00:09:21"You got the frozen margarita machine for the party."
JVL00:09:23"Here, Sonny. How are you doing, Sonny? How's your weekend? I'm just going to -- don't mind me with my phone here."
Sonny00:09:28"Well, I wanted to -- so I did partake of Prime. I did partake of Prime Day. I got a -- after months -- or I'm sorry. Well, not really months. After some heckling by my dentist during the 17 dental visits I had to make. Did you get an Oral-B or a Sonicare?" "I got a Sonicare."
JVL00:09:48"Sonicare is much better." "I got a Sonicare." "Sonicare is the best one."
Vic00:09:51"That's the greater sign, Oral-B."
Sonny00:09:52"Yes, I have a Sonicare as well." "I got a Sonicare." "I got a Sonicare. I can't remember exactly which model, but it's one of the --"
JVL00:09:56"It's the one that's Bluetooth-connected.
Sonny00:09:57You can put it into your app." "No, I don't need -- I don't get any of the Bluetooth-connected stuff. I don't want any -- I don't want the Internet of Things."
Vic00:10:00"You know the app that you get bonus points for how long you spend brushing your teeth, and it tells you how much time to spend on each quadrant. It's ridiculous."
Sonny00:10:08"Four minutes."
Vic00:10:09"Don't want that." "Four minutes."
Sonny00:10:11"I don't want any of that.
JVL00:10:12I don't want any of that." "Two is the important thing." "Two is for normal people. Anybody who's actually clean inside their mouth should do four at a minimum."
Vic00:10:18"You know what, Sonny, though? Read the directions, because I read it, and one of the important things is Sonicare, it says, 'Only to be used in mouth.'" "Good to know." "I'm not kidding. It says that. I go, 'Oh, a little too late for that.'
JVL00:10:34Okay."
Sonny00:10:35"Good to know."
JVL00:10:36"Sonicare Toothbrush/Personal Massager."
?00:10:39"Something."
Sonny00:10:40"I got the Sonicare Massager, and in addition to that, I spent a lot of time on Amazon Prime not pulling the trigger. I could have spent like $400 just upgrading 4K Blu-rays in my house. There was an Indiana Jones sale. There was an Indiana Jones set I almost bought. There was a Lord of the Rings set I almost bought, the Godfather set I almost bought. All of the sets were like 50% to 60% off. I almost bought like 10 of them."
Vic00:11:17"It's important to own because people who buy these movies on their TV, that's..." "Hold on.
JVL00:11:23Follow me on this math, Sonny. If you saved $400 by not buying those things, and then you spent $200 buying half of them, it would be like you were paying... No, it's not even. It would be like you made $200."
Sonny00:11:41"Yeah. The only other thing that I bought aside from the Sonicare was, there's a three pack of Stanley Kubrick 4Ks that I've had my eye on for a while."
JVL00:11:53"Barry Lyndon?"
Sonny00:11:54"It was $30. No, not Barry Lyndon."
Vic00:11:56"It always comes up. That guy always comes up."
Sonny00:11:59"It's the Shining 2001 in full metal jacket." "Two out of three ain't bad." "That's a pretty good ... I also only have a full metal jacket on HDDVD, not even Blu-ray, it's HDD. So I'm upgrading from HDDVD to 4K Blu-ray. Big step up there. Anyway, those were my two purchases. I was very good otherwise.
Vic00:12:22I did not-" "Victorino, what did you buy on Prime Day?" "I had in mind certain things I wanted to buy for personal care, if you will. I love the look on your face." "I'm a big fan of the Jack Black products. Not the comedian, but the various soaps and shampoos and shaving creams and things like that. It's unrelated to the actor. It's called Jack Black. It's really great. None of it was on sale, so I was like, 'Oh, forget this. I'm not going to get that. I'll wait till later.'" "The kind of soaps that have the hard, the exfoliating, big, manly soaps, I love that sort of stuff. So I didn't get that, but I ended up getting-" "The manly soaps?" "Manly soaps. They smell like scent." "Are you using these in the prison shower?" "Sandalwood. No, no, no. But it's more expensive than Duke Cannon, if you know Duke Cannon, the enormous soap. So I just like a nice thing like that. But they were not on sale. But I ended up getting three books that were all on sale, which were two ... I can't believe I'm sharing this. "Books." "Two collections of Joan Didion's essays, and then The Year of Magical Thinking. Because I really want to be magical. Matt Contenetti. I've decided that."
JVL00:13:37"I was going to make fun of you, but the Didion stuff's amazing." "Yes." "And you eat it like candy." "Yes. I know.
Sonny00:13:46I mean, you know how it is."
JVL00:13:47"It will only take you five years to read." "I was going to make a joke about how long will it take you to read these three books."
Sonny00:13:50"That's what I was going to say.
Vic00:13:51Apparently, I mean, that means I have to read it. It means I have to read it." "You'll be done these in a month.
Sonny00:13:55What did you get?
Vic00:13:56The White Album?" "No, no, no. Just put them on your shelves." "No, no, no. Slouching Towards Bethlehem. The White Album." "The White Album, isn't it? And then Your Magical Thinking."
JVL00:14:04"Do Your Magical Thinking last?" "Yes, of course, because otherwise I won't care as much.
Vic00:14:09But truth be told- "Dude, you're going to love it." "When I was a little ... Yeah, because her writing is great. When I was ... But as people in our world know, in our trade know, if you read something that reads so easy, it means it took a lot of work, because our human brains are not that simple. And it's what's all- " It's contorted and discombobulated, and we got to do these things. And then most people just ... And then there it is, and you have to go back over and over. So I actually saw the doc ... When I was alone, the documentary, there's a Joan Didion documentary that was done by her nephew, you know her nephew, Griffin Dunn. And I found that to be oddly compelling. And so that's how I ended up on this, and of course, he's a big fan of Didion, so that's great." "Young Joan Didion?" "Yes, yes." "Such a dish." "Oh my gosh." "She was very slight." "She was very slight."
JVL00:15:04"She's elfin, but also with this incredible sense of style and the pictures of her smoking in a Corvette at like age 25, and you're just like, that woman has it going on.
Vic00:15:18She's amazing." "Yes, I agree."
JVL00:15:20"I envy you getting to read her for the first time."
Vic00:15:23"Well, thank you. So I did that. You know, when I was in Annapolis a couple of weekends back, went to a used bookstore, Back Bay Books, and actually got a $15 first edition of a James Thurber collection. And that is great. And from 1953." "Wow." "It has, you know, has that great smell when you open these books up. You know, it's that nice old texture and great short stories. I like short stories. You know me. Done."
JVL00:15:54"They score high on the quadrants."
Vic00:15:55"I am almost through the second chapter. So that's what I got. What else is going on? JV, I wanted to ask you really quickly, and then we can move on, with the toothbrushes. You do have the electric. You should tell this to Sonny. How often do you change the electric toothbrush head?"
JVL00:16:13"So you got to pay attention to the toothbrush head because they've got dye on my, am I, I can hear you." "Can you not hear me?" "You're on." "No, you're on."
Vic00:16:27"You were making these weird things." "This is my hand. We don't have video. You don't have to watch the show, but this is my impression of the bristles going out."
JVL00:16:35"Yeah. So you got to watch the blue dye on the bristles, and when the blue dye is like 40% of the way down, don't wait for it to get all the way to half, but a little bit before half, then you replace the brush head. And the reason you do this is because over time of use, the tips of the bristles will become sharpened by using your, and when they are sharpened at the edges and the tips, they are the tips. That is bad for your gums." "Yes, yes. People end up bleeding." "So you want the tips of the brushes to be nice and rounded, and the reason we replace our toothbrushes is because with frequent use, the tips then become shaved off. So that's what you got to do." "Interesting." "Here's the other thing. So electric toothbrush heads are insanely expensive." "Yes." "They're like $9 to $15 per head." "What?" "I highly recommend just buying one." "I'm buying them once a year at Costco. So once a year, Costco has like a 12-pack, $35 off. So it's only like $35 or $40. Just buy two of them." "Yeah." "Buy 24 brush heads once a year, and then you're just done."
Sonny00:17:49"Okay." "Sounds like a scam. I'm just going to use the same brush head forever."
Vic00:17:52"Forever. Well, you have perfect teeth. The other thing I was going to say is, you know what's interesting, yesterday I watched for the first time in its entirety, from beginning to end, because it's on HBO Max and then today I watched the sequel. But yesterday, I had never watched from beginning to end, First Blood, Sylvester Stallone, First Blood.
Sonny00:18:13And that is-
Vic00:18:14"The first Rambo movie?" "Yes, the one with Brian Dennehy. It's really interesting. I mean, it's the whole thing about the drift." "It's very different." "It's a slow burn." "Yes, it is." "It's a Vietnam movie.
JVL00:18:24It's a Vietnam vet movie."
Vic00:18:25"And, you know, drifters. You know, after Vietnam and these guys and how they were treated and so on, it was quite touchy. I mean, it's interesting because it was a move for him not doing Rocky at the time and he did this thing and then today we watched Rambo. It is, first of all, on the quadrants, the duration is A+++, an hour and a half. Hour and a half. "But action-packed." "Oh my gosh, insane. In Rambo where he uses the explosive arrow and the guy blows up, like he just uses it to blow up. The dude. Okay. That's amazing. And of course, the Hind D. It's completely ridiculous at the end of Rambo with the Hind D helicopter being blown up because Rambo is pretending to be asleep in his Huey. And then he takes out a rocket launcher and that's how it ends. But I'll accept it because the pyrotechnics, I appreciate it so much having seen so many awful movies in the last few years that use CGI. CGI overload.
JVL00:19:27Now, will it bother you to know that actually the character, John Rambo, that's in Rambo is the multiverse version of the John Rambo first blood. That would be awful. I'm never going to watch it again. So those are different characters.
Vic00:19:39Thank you.
Sonny00:19:40Thanks a lot. In separate worlds. Thank you. It makes a lot of sense though if you think about it.
Vic00:19:44Oh my gosh. Because they're very different. Awful. They're very different. Yes. And he's fighting his way through purgatory. That's my understanding. In Rambo, the girl is gorgeous in that. And she's a sort of half Asian girl. You know who I'm talking about? She's the love interest. But her English is so awful. Why'd you leave Army? Rambo? Take me with you. And I was like, yes. Oh, sorry. Sorry. I guess it said that out loud. Yes. Yes. JVL. I said it. And on the quadrants. So sex, nudity, technically in Rambo, the first one, I would give it a C because you do see his ass. And that is technically-
Sonny00:20:20Yeah. You see Rambo.
Vic00:20:22Yeah. That is right. And speaking of showing male asses, over the weekend, Thor Love and Thunder clinched the box office with a hundred. $44.2 million, followed by Minions: The Rise of Gru with $46.1 million. And in third place, Top Gun: Maverick with an additional $15.5 million. My sister finally took my dad to finally see the movie last Sunday. He loved it, didn't he? In the theater. He loved it. Not knowing anything about what's been going on in Val Kilmer's life, my dad is like, "He wasn't acting. That's real." He says. He thinks he had it. He goes, "I guess he had a larynectomy or something." With steroids and everything else. I said, "Yes, it's real." And by the way, this morning I had seen a friend, Mark Clemente, who was an F-14 pilot in the '80s, and he saw it, liked it, and said it is true about ... He loved the F-14 scene at the end because he said that backseat, 800 circuit breakers. And you just had to call them out by name like, "A-26," and then just flip it on. So, insane. Box office thoughts.
JVL00:21:31Highest grossing Thor movie ever, Sonny. Yeah. This is what the people wanted.
Sonny00:21:36It's interesting. I'm kind of curious to see what happens with this in the second weekend. It's gotten to the point with all these Marvel movies that it's the second weekend that's more interesting because, you know, $144 million, a lot of money. It's a lot of money. And the opening weekends for these movies are papering over a lot of weakness in Disney overall right now. Basically the opening weekend. Mm-hmm . Of all of these MCU flicks are doing a good job of hiding the fact that Disney is in more trouble, I think, theater-wise than people care to say. I mean, $144 million, you can't ... There's nothing to say about that that's bad. It's a good open, you know, people showed up. The more interesting, the most interesting box office figure this week is the fact that this phone ... Yes, I saw you mention that. ... passed 100 million worldwide. It's made 60-some domestic and more than 100 million worldwide. It reportedly had a budget of $18 million. So that's a big win for Universal, but what I find really annoying about that movie is that it's hitting VOD this weekend. I mean, I don't understand what ... I don't understand what these studios are doing. Make more money. It's holding really well. It's holding really, really well. People are showing up for it. It's got great word of mouth, and they're throwing it up on VOD. Maybe it won't make any difference. I don't know. But I feel like it's a mistake to go that route. But what do I know?
Vic00:23:15I don't know. And people are calling. Did you see it? Is it interesting?
Sonny00:23:19Is it good? I saw it. So I think the movie itself is kind of a mess insofar as ... I don't want to do a full big boy review. But the way the movie is structured, you could get rid of literally half of the plot. You could cut one half of the movie entirely out of it, and it would have no impact whatsoever on the end of the film. It just wouldn't make any difference to how the film resolves, which is wild in a way. But also, people really seem to enjoy it. It's got a B+ on CinemaScore, which is really good for horror movies. Horror movies usually do in the B- to C+ range if they're passable. So, B+ for a horror movie is very, very good. People seem to like it. It's, again, good word of mouth. It's holding really well. I don't understand why Universal and Blumhouse are pulling it, or not pulling it out of theaters, but just putting it on VOD. It feels like they're shooting themselves in the foot, but again, what do I know? What do I know? So, that is the most interesting thing at the box office.
Vic00:24:25And Lightyear is completely dropped off, huh?
Sonny00:24:27Yeah. And Lightyear dropped another 60%. Oof. I mean, this is what I'm talking about when I say that Disney has a lot more problems than I think people are willing to say.
JVL00:24:38Sonny, is it possible that we're gonna get another opportunity to see Top Gun on IMAX? Or is that just gone? I think it's...
Sonny00:24:46There has to be one. No, no. I think that is very likely. I mean, if you look at the movie calendar, you basically have... Yeah. You have the Nope coming out next weekend, not this weekend, but next weekend. That's the new Jordan Peele horror movie. Looks scary as fuck.
Vic00:25:05I don't know. It looks... I didn't... I'm like trailer overloaded. Every time I have to see that trailer, I'm like, "I feel like I've seen the whole movie now."
Sonny00:25:12I'm sure they're hiding something because Jordan Peele is pretty clever. But you've got Nope coming out that weekend, and then you have Bullet Train coming out either the weekend after that or the second weekend after that. And then there's nothing. There is nothing in theaters up until Black Panther II in November. It's a crazy... There are movies that are coming out, but there's no obvious big-
Vic00:25:42I didn't even know there was a Black Panther II. Is it known who the new Black Panther is then?
Sonny00:25:48Black Panther II, Wakanda Forever, they have not announced to the new Black... They're not... T'Challa, the king of Wakanda, he is dead. They are not replacing... Chadwick Boseman in that role. The character will not be replaced. They'll have a new Black Panther. It makes sense because Black Panther is a title. It's like king or queen or whatever. It's not like Peter Parker's Spider-Man. It should be Killmonger. It should be Killmonger.
JVL00:26:20I feel like when Magneto went from being chief bad guy to headmaster at the Xavier School.
Sonny00:26:27Yeah. Yeah. But I think there's a very good chance that at some point in late August, we'll get another week of Top Gun in IMAX. I think that's a safe bet.
Vic00:26:40Have you met anybody, realistically, not somebody who's trying to troll, have you run into people, anyone who has said, "Oh, I hated that movie," who has seen it?
JVL00:26:51I mean, Vic, there's always one. There are even people out there who say, "Oh, what's the big deal with the Webb Telescope?"
Vic00:26:58Oh, you want to save that for the stinger, the Webb Telescope? I'll save it. We'll save that for the stinger.
JVL00:27:03Because I want to talk about Maria Menounos from The Singer, and I guess we could do both, but I have some very deep movie thoughts. Wait, hold on.
Vic00:27:09Maria Menounos? Why don't you talk about Maria Menounos now? Did you end up going to the theater like an hour early? Is that why you started thinking about it?
Sonny00:27:15Yes. Yeah. Why did you get to see it?
JVL00:27:18Why were you watching The 20? No, not The 20. I was watching Nuvi. Nuvi. The thing that goes on before the movie with Maria Menounos.
Vic00:27:25I saw her at a gas station. At a gas station once on the screen.
JVL00:27:32On the screen. Because I took G-Money to see Thor: Love and Thunder, which we could talk about later. That itself was an experience. We went to see the IMAX 3D presentation. And because of the vagaries of the things that were happening in my house at the time because we had a COVID outbreak and I was just trying to get G-Money out of the house because he was the last. The last person not to be sick. And I just ran out of things for us to do. So we got to the movie theater early and like really early. We were there for a good 20 minutes before Nuvi started.
Vic00:28:11And so I got to watch the entire movie role, which is something I haven't seen. Hold on now. What happens? What's in the theater before Nuvi? Nothing. Nothing?
JVL00:28:20We were literally the first people to walk into the theater. That has not happened to me in a very, very long time. Yeah. There's no way when you need to have to like show up and get in line. Yeah. To fend off people. To save a seat. To save a seat. Right. But I was watching Nuvi and I just, Maria Menounos, she's not really an actress, although she has acted. She's not really a model, although she has modeled. She's a, and not an influencer. I think she's just a personality. Yes.
Sonny00:28:57Well, she wasn't. She was like an extra TV host or something like, uh, wasn't she like a extra host or
JVL00:29:04something? Wasn't she was a correspondent for entertainment tonight who then did a tiny bit of time and access Hollywood. But each of these were very brief periods. And then she like showed up and I come, I mean, she really is just a person. It's just a person who is famous for being famous. You know, I, well, she's, she's the Nuvi girl and yet, you know what she, Maria Menounos and Nuvi is like Dick Clark. And New Year's Eve, there's no reason for it, but it's perfect. She's exactly right for that. It's this amazing mesh of the talent with the, the weird talent with the really weird slot. Yeah. And, uh, and I don't know, she's 44.
Vic00:29:48She is still getting it done. Yeah. I w I was also, I should've mentioned this when I was in New York, I also was in a cab with her. She was on the screen.
JVL00:29:58Sorry. Anyway. I just, I just find the entire Maria Menounos interesting to somebody should, you should do a profile of her.
Vic00:30:05I bet she'd say yes.
JVL00:30:06What's the deal with Maria Menounos? You know what?
Vic00:30:08I bet she wouldn't say yes. I bet she wouldn't. No, I mean, what else is she doing? She's doing Nuvi. Sonny, how about a big boy review of Thor Love and Thunder?
Sonny00:30:17Thor Love and Thunder picks up more or less where Avengers Endgame left off. I think at least in terms of Thor and his life. He's, he's traveling the cosmos with the guardians of the galaxy, AKA Star-Lord, it's played by Chris Pratt and the rest of those guys, uh, saving planets from stuff, but he's kind of, he's kind of down in the dumps cause he doesn't have anybody special. Uh, good news for him is that, uh, the one special lady in his life, Natalie Portman, uh, AKA Jane Foster is dying. She's dying. Good, good for Thor. She's dying. Uh, because now they can get together because she... Yeah, it's Mjolnir, the, the hammer that was blown up in Thor Ragnarok. Uh, she gets, she gets Mjolnir for some reason and they have to stop Gorr, the God Butcher is played by Christian Bale. He's a, he's a guy who was given a magical sword to kill all the gods.
JVL00:31:16Ford versus Ferrari mode.
Sonny00:31:18Well, there, there's something I want to...
JVL00:31:21Elaborate on that later by the way.
Sonny00:31:22I want to talk, I want to talk about his performance in this because I feel like he's in an entirely different movie. Yeah, absolutely. Yes. Um, but the, uh, but Gorr, the God Butcher, uh, is mad because the gods and the people who are worshiped in the Marvel, uh, universe are all kind of dicks. Like his, his kid dies, his kid dies and he finds a, he finds his paradise and his God who he had worshiped is like, I don't care. I don't, I don't care about your kid. Go die some more and worship me. I don't, you know, I w anyway, he wants to kill them all. Um. Uh, is directed by Taika Waititi and it is very much in line with Thor Ragnarok, uh, in the sense that it is a movie in which it treats Thor as a goof, as a goofy goofball character and the whole, that's what, that's what the people want and the, these movies have been very popular, very successful, uh, but I can't stand it. I can't, I can't stand, I can't stand Taika Waititi. Taika Waititi's whole shtick.
Vic00:32:28Interpretation of, or just his shtick, yeah.
Sonny00:32:31I don't, I don't like him, I don't like him in, I don't like his movies in general. The only things that he has done that I have really liked are the FX on Hulu shows that he barely has anything to do with. What We Do in the Shadows. So What We Do in the Shadows is great, like one of my favorite shows on TV, but that is based on a movie that he starred in and I think directed and co-wrote, um, but he, he is like, he was the driving force of that and he, and that movie is only 80 minutes long and at minute 50. I was like staring at my watch. Wow. I was like, please fucking God end this thing. I, I just, I don't, I've never, I've never cared for him and he's, he's also the show writer, he was a creator, um, he is a, or a co-creator of a show called Reservation Dogs which is very good, uh, FX on Hulu again, um, which is set in an Indian reservation and is, is very, is very funny and poignant, uh, I like that a lot, but all of his movies, Jojo Rabbit I did not care for, this I do not care for, Thor Ragnarok did not care for, Hunt for the Wilderpiece. Hunt for the Wilderpeople, okay, I didn't, but I just don't, he, he has this.
JVL00:33:31Free Guy?
Sonny00:33:33I hated him in Free Guy, I, he's the worst part of Free Guy. I know. I'm sorry, I'm just trying to wind you up. I, I like Free Guy. I like Free Guy a lot, um, and his, like, kind of shticky, oh, look at me, I'm doing, I'm doing my improv, man, I fucking hate, I fucking hate that stuff so much, he's the worst. So, um, I don't care for this movie, I don't care for his interpretation of Thor, I prefer the Kenneth Branagh. Uh, Thor from the first film, we've discussed all this before, um, but the, the, the problem with this, there are so many problems with this movie, first off, it has no idea what it wants to be about, second of all, uh, as I said, Christian Bale feels like he's in an, in an entirely different and much more interesting movie, um, where he is, uh, there, there's, there's one scene in particular where, so the, the plot of the film such as it is.
Vic00:34:21Yes, explain to some of our listeners who want to know what, what happened here, she's
Sonny00:34:24sick. The plot of the film such as it is, is that Thor has kidnapped all of the kids from new Ragnarok and is trying to get Thor to come save them so he can get the magical hammer to go find a turn, whatever, it doesn't fucking matter. Um, but the, but he kidnaps these kids, he kidnaps these kids and there's a moment where he's like, the thing about Gore is that he is, he doesn't hate people, he hates gods, right? He, he is like trying to, so there's a moment in, in this movie where he is trying to, um, make these kids. Kids feel better. He's trying to like cheer them up a little bit, like he's captured them. He's trying to make them laugh. So he conjures up this like little snake creature thing and rips its head off. He's like, this is funny, right? We're all having fun here and it's funny and they're all terrified and horrified. And he has this like confused look on his face. Like why don't you appreciate this humor that I'm doing for you again, Christian Bale is doing a lot of interesting things in this movie and nobody, nobody else is doing anything interesting.
JVL00:35:22I'll tell you what he did in this movie. Crap out of G money.
Vic00:35:27Oh yes. He he's very, if you're a kid, if you're a kid, I was thinking about this cause my kids are already too old. So they were sort of like, you know, a little bit of the shoulder shrug or at least pretending that it's not, it is a disturbing image when he emerges from the shadow. So what happened?
JVL00:35:43Uh, so G money has seen, I believe every Marvel movie to this point he's seen, I, I, maybe there's something in the MCU he has missed, but, but he's been through for all of it through the infinity.
Vic00:35:56He's lucky. He missed eternals.
JVL00:35:58Yeah, that's right. He didn't see, he had no interest. Even he had no interest in the eternal.
Sonny00:36:04Did he see the Dr. Strange movie, the new Dr. Strange movie?
JVL00:36:07No, I guess he didn't see the new Dr. Strange. We haven't done that one yet. Okay. Okay. So, uh, he, from the very first moments of Christian Bale showing up on screen, he went into like hiding his face in my shoulder, like what's happening. I do not like this. I do not like this. And then he really didn't like it when Christian Bale shows up in the cage with the kids. Oh yeah. Like that was like, ah, cuz it's, it's both a, this creepy character who feels more like a Freddy Krueger type than a, than a Marvel villain type. But it's, it's with children who've been taken from their parents, which ups the ante. Yeah. And then when we got to the, uh, the weird shadow fight where he was conjuring the tentacle monsters that were, were strengthened. Strangling Valkyrie and maybe pleasuring. I don't know.
Vic00:36:58Who can say, who can say. It was a tentacle you said.
JVL00:37:00There were, there were, there were tentacles happening. Yeah. Uh, G money turned to me and he goes, this has never happened. He looked at me. It was because he goes, dad, I do not want to stay for this. Can we please leave right now?
Vic00:37:10Wow. Okay, buddy. Sure. Wow.
JVL00:37:14So we, you know, I picked him up and we, we ran out of the movie theater as fast as his little legs would carry him.
Vic00:37:19It's not for, it's not for kids. And you would think it's comic book movies. Oh, good. Bring the kids. And then you see content like that. It was too much.
Sonny00:37:25It was too intense. But this is the first one.
JVL00:37:27And it was Christian Bale. It was Christian Bale's that off kilter aspect of it.
Sonny00:37:31Again, he's doing something interesting in this movie. He's the only person who was doing anything interesting in this movie. And they're like, there are some bits that I kind of enjoyed, like the idea of, uh, Mjolnir and Stormbreaker being like jealous, right? Like the two, like the two weapons being kind of like, there's, there's some funny stuff in it, but like enough, none of it works. None of it gels. Uh, and it also looks like shit. The whole movie looks like absolute dog shit.
JVL00:37:59I disagree. Uh, like two, I, I read that in your review and in IMAX 3d, it looks quite good.
Sonny00:38:07Well, I, and so I, I wonder, you didn't stay, no, but you didn't, you didn't stay for the worst part though. You, you were gone by the time they got to the fight at the end. So there's a fight at the J Vic, back me up on this. There's a fight at the end. There's big, big final battle. Right. And it's set to. It's set to the guitar solo of November Rain. Oh, oh yes. The kids. I like November Rain. The kids fighting. I like, I like, I like, I couldn't see a fucking thing that was happening in that whole sequence. It was so dark and muddy. It looked like, it looked like complete trash. I just, I couldn't.
Vic00:38:40Well, I would say. It was bad. Not only was it bad, but the parts that I did see were very, as the kids say, cringe. There was a little girl doing some sort of thing with her new powers to the monsters. I mean, it was silly. So that, I mean, there are aspects that your son. JVL probably would have liked, oh, the kids are fighting back, you know, so it makes it sort of a little bit more empowering, but at the same time, so ridiculous.
JVL00:39:03So Vic, you hated it. I assumed.
Vic00:39:05I just assumed that you were going to hate this largely mixed negative. Okay. Sonny, are you, are you good on your.
Sonny00:39:14I'm done. I didn't care for this movie. I don't, I don't like any of these movies. I'm glad this movie made $144 million on its opening weekend so we can get more. Crap like this.
Vic00:39:24I love it. Okay. I gave the plot. It's okay. The plot to be, I mean, it's, it is what it is, but I mean, there are questions. Is it hard to follow?
Sonny00:39:35Was it hard to follow?
Vic00:39:36How did, how did she become mighty? How did the, how did the hammer and Mjolnir become her friend made no sense that none
Sonny00:39:44of that made any sense. And I here's, here's no, but like beyond, so you are the hammer, but you were, you are, you are, you, what you are sensing here, Vic is a real structural problem with the story, which is that. All right. So Thor makes Mjolnir promise to take care of Jane Foster, right? And what does, and so Mjolnir comes into her life when she has this terrible inoperable cancer. And it turns out Mjolnir is killing her every time, every time he shows he's sucking more of her mortality out of her. And that's, that's like an actual real problem. With the story. It creates it. It like it is all designed to set up, but no, well, that's, that's what, that's what
JVL00:40:29you think, right? You think like, oh, Lord of the rings, Mjolnir in theory, right?
Sonny00:40:34Mjolnir should be giving her strength and health. But as we find out at the end of the movie, you may have missed this, but I was going for it as, as we find out at the end of the movie, Mjolnir is actually sucking the mortality out of her. And every time she transforms, it kills her a little bit more, but the cancer is already
JVL00:40:50killing.
Sonny00:40:51Does that make any sense?
JVL00:40:52So the Mjolnir is the cancer or the, no, but you don't see her.
Vic00:40:59You don't see her sick when she's mighty Thor, Dr. Jane Foster, as she had some great lines in there, Sonny. I mean, she could just say, you can call me Dr. Jane Foster.
Sonny00:41:10You mean, you mean lady?
JVL00:41:12Oh, why doesn't she just call her mighty Thor stay lady Thor then? Right. Yes. That's my question.
Vic00:41:20Sucks a little life force when she flips, when she switches.
JVL00:41:22Ever like, cause I like the, I thought it was a nice choice to have the hammer saving her. The hammers like her. I had, you know what? I wrote this down by the way. I wrote this down.
Sonny00:41:32Or, or I'm sorry, Dick, one more thing. I'm sorry. Or the way that you do this is you have her be mighty Thor the entire time. And the sacrifice she makes is like giving the hammer back to Thor to save the kids. Like she gives up the hammer and so she transforms and she dies. Right. And that is like, okay, it's sac big sacrifice, big heroic sacrifice instead. And it is literally Mjolnir is killing her every time. So Mjolnir, so she has to transform one more time to save everybody. And then she does.
Vic00:41:59And it's weirdly shaped. She dies. Formed. Yes. Yeah. She dies at the end. She goes, she goes. So I have, oh, don't even get me started on that sting. We'll talk about the stingers later. Cause the stingers are so bad now. Uh, I, I wrote this down and I figured out what I meant by it. I said, how did she become mighty Thor? I have a theory. And the theory is the hammer went to her because she had traces of Thor in her. Oh. Right.
Sonny00:42:23Makes sense. Thank you.
Vic00:42:25Yep. Thank you. JVL.
?00:42:28What?
Sonny00:42:29I don't think that's quite how it works. I don't know.
Vic00:42:33I got it. I figured it. I figured it out. I figured it out. Okay. Duration is a C. I think it was just under two, but it felt longer. Uh, action and violence. I just give it a flat B. I mean, it is what it is. Gentleman's B. Yeah. And sex nudity is a C. I mean, you do see him obviously, technically speaking, however, It's like too hard. You know, there's so much potential there, especially Natalie Portman. And if they did it in the Eternals, albeit in the Eternals, you know, that scene that was like, that was like turtle speed.
Sonny00:43:01The saddest-
Vic00:43:02The saddest. Yes. Thank you.
Sonny00:43:05Uh, the other, the other thing I did like about this movie is Russell Crowe. Again, Russell Crowe was in a slightly different movie. I think. Russell Crowe was great. He's like closer to the goofy spirit. He's playing- I thought it was very funny. I thought exactly-
Vic00:43:17Because he's playing like a Eurotrash. Yeah. No, I, I, I had this thought. He's playing a Greek. Todd said the same thing in his review, which was like, he is like the owner of a Greek diner. And just like, "Hey, you want a Spanakopita? I give it to you." You know? And, and, and lightning bolt. You know?
Sonny00:43:33And he just- He's playing, he's playing a total Greek stereotype. There's no reason that that role should be as funny as it is, but it's very good.
Vic00:43:39Except for, okay. It's funny. Uh, wow. You know, he was a thick guy, right? Like in Gladiator, he was a solid buff guy, but he was never thin. Russell Crowe's never thin. And you see him in his old age. You see the arms. The flabbiness is so, it's terrifying.
Sonny00:43:54Did we do, uh, did we do his Road Rage movie?
Vic00:43:58Yeah.
Sonny00:43:59Yeah. Yeah. He was, I mean, he weighed like, he looked like, he looked like Earthquake from the WWF. Earthquake. In that movie.
Vic00:44:07One of the most, by the way, uh, really, really brief digression. Uh, I'm still, I'm, I'm still troubled by, you know, how certain scenes will haunt you. And one of the scenes that haunts me is Road Rage, where he kills Sonny Bunch. In the diner is so horrifying. And the way he's so good, uh, Jimmy Simpson, he, he acts it out. So convincingly that, you know, I'm slowly dying and it's, it's horrifying because he, he can cut, he gives, you know, he slams the coffee mug and then he's disoriented. And then it's a slow death and it's so awful. Okay. Now back to the show JVL, uh, you, so when did you, you left, uh, at which point again? At the tentacles. Okay.
JVL00:44:52Tentacles.
Vic00:44:53Yeah. When the tentacles are in the three, it was, uh, you know, here's the thing though.
JVL00:45:00So I, as I sat there for the first, however long, I guess it was the first hour 20, um, I thought to myself, you know, this is pretty good actually. And within two hours of leaving the theater, as I was putting notes together for this, I wrote down pretty good actually. And then went to write down the things that I thought were good. And I couldn't remember a single thing, but one of the most disposable MCU movies that I can remember seeing, which is saying something, cause a lot of them are very disposable in this. I mean, it just, yeah.
Vic00:45:39Also for me in terms of the content of like, what's going on in this Marvel universe with the gods. I feel like if I wanted to see clash of the Titans, I'd see clash of the Titans. And what are we getting? We're getting into here because this is, and you watch a wonder woman movie. Yeah. The first, yeah, exactly. Okay. Well then there we go. It's hair run this whole day. Okay. That's that world. We're mixing everything. We're so far removed from the first iron man in terms of like what the world we're living in. It's all, it's too crazy now. And the kids from the different planets, um, and, and Sonny, if we can just briefly jump to the, the first stinger, really Hercules.
Sonny00:46:19Hercules, the guy from Ted Lasso, Hercules is a classic, Hercules is a classic Marvel character. I mean, it really, you know, I wait, which guy from Ted Lasso, you know, the, uh, the,
Vic00:46:30um, oh, the angry, the angry one. Yeah.
Sonny00:46:34The angry. Yeah. Yeah. Um, uh, whatever.
Vic00:46:38I is Hercules. Yeah. Yes, exactly. JVL.
Sonny00:46:42Um, I, I don't actually, I mean, look again, there's, there's, there's like half of an interesting idea. In here about the gods and faith work in the MCU. Like they, they, they play with this a little bit in moon night. There's a, there's a scene in moon night where they're talking about, uh, the different afterlifes. There's a ancient Egyptian afterlife that w this, a character who is essentially a Egyptian God, uh, mentions briefly the, uh, the Wakanda and afterlife. So like the, there's this idea that you have all of these different afterlives that people go to. It's kind of interesting. And this idea again, that like the gods hate you and don't care about you and are totally irrelevant to, to how you, I like, again, there's something kind of interesting here. It's just that white TT is not at all the person to handle any of this stuff. He doesn't, he doesn't, there's no gravitas to anything he does and it is infuriating to watch. Are we, I hate it.
JVL00:47:40Are we hitting a point where Marvel doesn't get X-Men and fantastic for onboarded pretty quick. It's going to stop caring because we are, I can't, I mean, yes. Who cares about these characters when you, when you are at the level of moon night in the eternals and Shang Chi, these are not even sixth tier characters, which is like, nobody cares about them. They're not interesting.
Sonny00:48:09Uh, yeah. I mean, I think you could have, you could have folded them into that first group of Avengers films, but like simultaneously killing off all the Avengers. Getting rid of all of them and trying to give, get people to care about, uh, any, anybody in these. Yeah. It's a real problem. Isn't it?
JVL00:48:29I, yes. I mean, I understand that they didn't want to pay the, the original stars, but maybe
Vic00:48:34they should have kept paying them.
JVL00:48:35Yes. Vic.
Vic00:48:37Yes. I also, I was going to say, I also feel very misled having seen multiple trailers for this movie and thinking it was going to be Thor and the guardians of the galaxy together. If you go back to the trailer. The guardians of the galaxy figure pretty, pretty, uh, like a good chunk of the trailer time is seeing him with them and all of that's all front loaded and then they're gone.
Sonny00:48:58Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I, I joked on Twitter that I joked on Twitter that Chris Pratt is having a very good month. You know, he, uh, he, he Jurassic world dominion, huge hit, but you met by it and made ton of money. Uh, the terminal list is a huge hit on Amazon prime video. People, people showing up for that, people watching that and then this guardians of the galaxy movie is opened up to $140 million that stars Thor a little bit, you know? So I mean, I like it's, but it, but it, but the, the, the, but no, you're right. The, the advertising campaign for this movie relied very, very heavily on like, this is a guardians of the galaxy movie kind of, and it's not that it's just as a word of warning to anybody who's still considering going to see it.
JVL00:49:44Yeah.
Sonny00:49:45Also, I, but you did like it. I guess. You weren't, you weren't into it.
JVL00:49:49No, I guess. Into it is too strong, but I, you know, I was thinking to myself, this is, this is enjoyable. This is fun. This is good. And, but again, even 120 minutes later, couldn't remember anything that, oh, I, I do remember.
Vic00:50:02I do remember the rock guy is the product of two rock dads, cuz they had to get that in there. That's important. Well, they're all, they're all boys.
JVL00:50:09Yeah. Are there any rock moms?
Sonny00:50:11No, they're all, they're all. Well, no, it's, it's a, they're all, they're all, they're all men. They, and, and Valkyrie's a king.
Vic00:50:17They are. Okay. I get that. And I just feel like these things are just checking off boxes. They gotta, but you know, it's like, it's just not, it's, uh, you, that's fine though, but I just, yes, but I just feel like it's just so forced in there and it's not essential to the plot. I think about atomic blonde, that little lesbian interlude. Very essential to the plot. That was incredibly essential. You cannot have that movie.
Sonny00:50:39The movie doesn't work without it.
Vic00:50:41That movie.
Sonny00:50:42That's the story.
JVL00:50:43Movie would not have worked without it. That's the story. And honestly, I was thinking about this. You know what? I would love to see a lesbian, these lesbian subplots without actually allowing the characters to express love for each other on screen. It's like they're trying to erase the lesbian characters and hide them from, from it's actually worse. It is worse. And I, I, for one, I think we need more. Why can't, why couldn't Valkyrie and some of her, all that woman, she kisses the hand
Vic00:51:07kiss on the hand in eat a little heavy petting, whatever city, something. Why do, why? Just because they're not.
JVL00:51:16They're not straight. Please. They can't do that on screen in a Marvel movie.
Vic00:51:20Let's get some meat and potatoes. I don't, I don't need less messaging, more, more action. Okay. Less words, more action.
JVL00:51:27I will say the Tessa Thompson looked bored out of her mind. Yes. I actually like her.
Sonny00:51:33I think she's always looks at, she always looks at that in Creed. She looked, she looked that way in Thor Ragnarok. She looks that way in Creed and Creed two, she always looks like she's too cool. Too cool for school. Too cool for school. I, I, I do not care for her affect on screen at all.
Vic00:51:50I like her English accent better than her American accent. I think they're, I thought she was English when I first met her.
Sonny00:51:57I think she's, I, Natalie Portman not is, is like, is okay in this, like she's not given
Vic00:52:04very much to do.
JVL00:52:05No, she's not.
Vic00:52:06Yeah. Parts of the same thing. I think she's, oh yeah, well they got to get that in there just a little bit. Do you think that lowered the, did it turn it into a CBS kind of a, oh wow. Wow. Oh really? Oh yeah. Terrible. Just terrible. How dare you? I just thought it was because you know how the screen, they put, you know, when you're on camera, it adds a little, oh no, no, no, no, no, awful. Just awful. I don't know, man. I just, uh, okay. Oh, and how about the last, last, the final stinger is her in, not heaven, of course is heard Valhalla and, and Idris Elba's there. That's it. That's it.
Sonny00:52:47Well, she'll be back.
JVL00:52:49It's what is happening.
Vic00:52:52They're just mailing in the stingers now. It used to be like, oh, you got to stay. Cause it's going to be really interesting and a little, oh, a tease. Oh my gosh. Hydra is still alive and they've got, you know, um, Scarlet witch there and their contri and her brother. Oh, this is going to be, oh, you know what this means now?
JVL00:53:08Now it's just like, oh, so it's funny you say that about Idris Elba. One of the reasons G money may have been so terrified is that he was primed to be scared because we got a trailer for an Idris Elba movie about a giant aggressive lion. It's basically jaws, but with a lion, I skipped and I didn't see that it, uh, it looked terrifying and G money was like, we are not seeing that.
Vic00:53:32It's like, we could see like, I don't know, like not him, like with a lion pet or a raising
JVL00:53:39a lion. No, no, no, no. He's out in the African bush on safari or something. And there's a lion that goes to the darkness. But worse known as much more jaws than ghost in the darkness. And it looks terrifying.
Sonny00:53:52Not circle of life. I, uh, what about, what about a thousand years of longing or whatever? Did you, did you guys get the trailer for that? Another Idris Elba?
JVL00:54:03No, I've seen that trailer, but we did not get that one.
Sonny00:54:06I, uh, yeah, I just, I, man, I didn't, I didn't care for this and you know who else didn't care for it as audiences. Cause this movie got a B plus. B plus from cinema score. It's one of only four MCU movies to get below an a minus and three of them have come since Avengers end game. People are, people are getting tired of these movies.
JVL00:54:25Yeah. I bet it was. So black widow, eternals, this, and I forgot about black widow because that was streaming,
Vic00:54:33wasn't it?
Sonny00:54:34Well, the fourth was before the fourth was Thor. The, uh, the first Thor, I think the first Thor got a B plus.
JVL00:54:40Oh really?
Sonny00:54:41Not dark world? That's Thor dark world. Thor dark world got a minus. Oh, wow.
JVL00:54:45All right.
Sonny00:54:46Yeah. It just goes to show you that audiences are fucking idiots.
Vic00:54:50I mean, like audiences are made up because you hope that people will say enough is enough. I'm not going to see this. And they're telling people that it's not worth it to watch this movie, but you never know.
JVL00:54:59We'll see what happens next weekend. Okay. Uh, corrections, shout outs, anything? No, but I'm excited to be chomping on some nugget ice when we tape next Thursday. All right.
Sonny00:55:12Well, did you order it? Did you get it? What's it coming?
Vic00:55:15Oh, boy. Look at that. Oh, boy. Look at that. That is all the time we're giving to this episode. Questions, comments, compliments, tweet us at @SonnyBunch, @VictorinoMatus. Again, be sure to subscribe to us on Patreon. Just go to subbeacon.com. We're there. Tell your friends. Until next time. I'm sorry. I forgot to ask. How was Paul on the show? He was good.
JVL00:55:43He was great. It was good. It wasn't good, Sonny. It was great.
Sonny00:55:48It was great having him.
JVL00:55:50He's such a nice kid. I understand you don't listen to these shows, but did you know that he had asked for her parents for her hand in marriage twice and got nagged?
Vic00:56:00Oh, I know the whole thing. I saw Paul. I saw Paul. And actually, he thinks that he got permission, but I went in disguise as the father and gave permission and blessing. On the Zoom. No, I saw he came to my house because he was going to be out of town and needed to park his store, his bike, and I said, "You can store it in my garage." So there you go. Sonny, you look confused.
JVL00:56:30Okay. Do you want to complain about NASA, Sonny? Do you want to complain about science? Yes. So you're talking about James Webb.
Sonny00:56:37Which one is James Webb? I just like that you're storing young men's bicycles in your garage.
Vic00:56:41The James Webb telescope. Right? Is it James Webb? Yes. The Webb Hubble, yes. Would that be the Secretary of the Navy? James Webb. I don't know. Name that for me. I should know. Yes. Sonny, you just ... That was my whole conspiracy thing. Webb Hubble. Very funny. Why is that? Isn't that weird? Two telescopes. Webb Hubble.
Sonny00:57:02No. It's not weird. It's not weird at all.
Vic00:57:05Sonny, why don't you tell the people what you think about it? What about the other two telescopes? The other two telescopes, by the way, are Vincent Foster.
Sonny00:57:13First telescope said he had information leading to the arrest of Hillary Clinton.
Vic00:57:20The first telescope, yeah, crashed mysteriously.
Sonny00:57:22They blew it out of the sky. So here's ... I want to be very clear on this. I have avoided, I have stringently avoided trying to yuck anybody's yum on Twitter about this. People are very excited about this new telescope and the new photos of it. Photos of the galaxies that we're seeing.
JVL00:57:45No, I think you should share your opinion with everybody about this.
Sonny00:57:49Look at how great this is. Look at the before and after. Here's the Hubble picture and here's the Webb picture. Every time I see one of these comparisons, I'm like Pam from The Office in that scene where she's like, "Corporate asked me to figure out the differences between these two photos." They're the same picture. They're the same picture. I am totally unimpressed by any of this. I understand that I'm sure that there's some shit that they're doing with spectrometers and we're going to find out about the composition of deep space and like, "Oh, look, the black holes work at 0.2 microns per dick jack." What the fuck? I don't care. I don't care about any of this. It is such a marginal improvement. The stuff that they are showing us is such a marginal improvement that I'm like, "Why even bother with this?" Just tell us what- This. These are the right things are going to be ... Here's the other ... Look, if NASA wants to do some ... If NASA wants to impress me, Sonny Bunch, and I deserve to be impressed. I am a man of exquisite taste. I deserve to be impressed. Put a fucking man on Mars. Put a space station on the moon. Build the thing like in 2001 where it's rotating and you can travel to Jupiter.
JVL00:59:09Build a megastructure like in Moonfall.
Sonny00:59:11Do literally ... Do literally anything. Do literally anything except give me the difference between the 1080p photo and the 720p photo.
JVL00:59:19I can't believe you didn't tweet any of this. I can't tell the difference is literally what Shannon said to me when we installed our first HD set and went from standard definition to HD. She looked at the screen and said, "I don't know, it looks the same to me." The idea that you, Sonny Bunch, who have an OLED screen because black levels matter deeply to you. That you look at this and say, "Oh, I don't get anything in the picture is the same." That you, who when he is in a theater where the screen is not properly masked gets pissy because why can't they mask the screen the right way? The bulb in the projector is too dim. Why are they cheaping out? Those things bother you. But you look at this, you say, "I just can't tell the differences in audio visual matter."
Sonny01:00:08That's rich. Well, those things matter. I mean, those things matter. Those things matter and this doesn't is the real crux of the issue. I mean, again, it's just like, I get it. I'm sure there are big sciency things and we're going to find out that the planets are actually 47 billion years old instead of 44 billion years old and look at how the gravity lenses around them. That'll show us how we do the light travel that'll never happen. It's an 8K. All that matters is that it's an 8K. It's got more megapixels. If you want to impress, again, if you want to impress me, take a picture.
JVL01:00:44This is a 5,000 megapixel telescope. Boom.
Sonny01:00:48Roasted. Give the cinematographer who works with the Coen brothers, I'm stalling because I can't remember his name. Give that guy the 8K camera and put him on the moon and have him shoot some footage. That will impress me. Give us something. Let me put a package on my Amazon rocket and send it to the moon and put it up there. Then I'll be impressed.
Vic01:01:20Sonny, yeah. But these pictures, they're just pictures. Sonny, you know what will impress you is the signals that are coming back from that distance. They're coming back in the form of prime numbers. I'm sure it's fine.
JVL01:01:38I got you, Victorino.
