Listen to this episode ↗on Substack, where the show lives now

In the first installment of what may become a recurring "hey, remember these movies?" format, Sonny, JVL, and Vic revisit The Quick and the Dead (1995, Sam Raimi) — newly on Netflix — starring Sharon Stone, Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe, and a young Leonardo DiCaprio, and all three love it. Sonny delivers an extended "big boy review" praising Raimi's economy in sketching eight distinct characters inside the tournament's first fourteen minutes and the escalating, Dutch-angled reverse-dolly-zoom style he brings to each individually staged shootout; JVL calls it his single favorite Gene Hackman performance and walks through the star trajectories (Crowe pre-L.A. Confidential, DiCaprio pre-Titanic, Stone post-Basic Instinct) that make the movie retroactively loaded, plus the lore that Stone used her clout as executive producer to cast Crowe and personally cover DiCaprio's salary; Vic, watching it for the first time straight through, awards it a Quadrant of A-plus plot, A-plus duration, A action/violence, and C sex/nudity, while debating with Sonny and JVL over whether Sharon Stone's boob is actually visible in the 4K transfer. Before any of that, the trio opens with a long stretch of banter: JVL's houseguest Father Harrison Ayer blessing his son's Little League bats with a Latin prayer about Aaron's rod and "the mashing of many dingers," a story about punishing a base-running mistake à la Bull Durham's Crash Davis, Sonny's sinus infection and glute steroid shot, and a lengthy, increasingly horror-movie-inflected saga of Vic's dental woes — a botched extraction, a cadaver-tooth bone graft, and the discovery via CT scan of a second, undescended childhood tooth lodged behind his nose that needs to be drilled out — plus quick box-office notes (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness still #1, Everything Everywhere All at Once on its way to being A24's biggest hit ever) and a pan of the new Firestarter. They close with a brief, unimpressed first look at the She-Hulk trailer.

From the show notes

Please enjoy this look back at The Quick and the Dead , which may be the first of several "Hey, remember these movies that we enjoy?" episodes. Who can say.

Guest00:00:00I'm confused. All I hear from you, you spineless cowards is how poor you are. How you can't afford my taxes, my protection. And yet somehow you've all managed to find the money to hire a professional gunfighter to kill me. Where's all this money coming from? What am I to think? If you've got so much to spare, I'm just gonna have to take some more off you. Because you clearly haven't got the message! This is my town! If you live to see the dawn, it's because I allow it! I'm in charge of everything! I decide who lives or who dies! Your gunfighter's dead. Old news.
Vic00:01:07Hello and welcome to another edition of the Sub-Beacon. I'm Victor Matus along with Jonathan V. Last and Sonny Bunch. Just a reminder, the Sub-Beacon is now available through Patreon. Go to subbeacon.com, you'll easily find us. Please subscribe, tell your friends, and don't forget about the Sub-Beacon merchandise store at tpublic.com. Thank you, Sonny, for sending us the latest round of royalties from the merch. That was a big one. That was a big one.
Sonny00:01:35Well, that was also for three months, or like five months. So, don't spend it all in one place.
JVL00:01:41You know, that's not just merch. It's advertising, because I was out in the cul-de-sac today doing a little BP with G-Money and having a conversation with one of my neighbors who said, I listen to a podcast. You're on. I said, oh, which one? She said that you were wearing a T-shirt for some podcast, the Sub-Beacon, and I went and looked it up, and it was you. I said, oh.
Vic00:02:09And we now want to move away.
JVL00:02:11Which one did you listen to?
Vic00:02:13She said, oh, it was the episode with everything everywhere all at once.
JVL00:02:16Oh, that's not it. That other guy was really angry. I said, yeah, yeah, well. He doesn't like multiverses.
Sonny00:02:22Does not care for the multiverse.
Vic00:02:24You said, they were like, what's his name? You said it was Don Geronimo. You like that reference?
Sonny00:02:29Don Geronimo and Mike O'Mara. Don and Mike in the morning. Don and Mike.
Vic00:02:34JVL, what's going on? How awesome are these people?
Sonny00:02:36If you're Don, I think, all right, so if Vic, I think Vic is Mike. I think Vic is Mike. I think JVL is Don. Who am I?
JVL00:02:46I don't know who any of these people are.
Vic00:02:48It's local radio. Sonny would know because he grew up in the area. I get mixed up, though, with that's, right, it was, no, you know what I was thinking? Also, Jack Diamond in the morning. Oh, Jack Diamond.
Sonny00:03:00Jack Diamond in the morning is, Jack Diamond in the morning, though, that was, like, very, like, straightforward. It's office. Music. Music. You know, whatever.
Vic00:03:12Yeah, they would allow that to play in a cubicle, that kind of music.
Sonny00:03:15Don and Mike were, like, shock jocks. They were, like, junior varsity Howard Sterns.
JVL00:03:21Anyway, listen, the answer is things are great because back in my house, and I have a house guest for the week.
Vic00:03:30Oh, right. Friend of the show, Father Harrison Ayer. Is he sitting on the tape? Is he sitting in the taping or no?
JVL00:03:37No, he's upstairs hanging out. And he did something very special for Flash. So we had a game, and Father Harrison came out to the game, and before we started, he did a blessing. Uh-huh. Of the bats. Wonderful. And here is the prayer that he put together. He put together. O God, who didst imbue the rod of Aaron with thy power to stifle the magics of the Egyptians, and who didst deign to permit thy servant Paul to be thrice beaten with rods, and so to share in the sufferings of thy Christ, vouchsafe, O Lord, to bless and sanctify these bats, that these rods of iron may bring about the kingship of Christ through the mashing of many dingers. Per eindem Christum Dominum Nostrum. Amen. The kids went crazy. They must have loved that. They went crazy.
Vic00:04:49Is this a Catholic school? Yeah. Oh, thank God. All the kids on the team are Catholic. You'd be in the news. Public school, I'd be in jail. You'd be in the news. Yeah, absolutely. You'd be in jail. It's Catholic school. All the kids are Catholic. We're the crusaders, Victorino. Oh, that's right. We're the crusaders. That's right. Excellent. I forgot. And that's great, interesting references of the rods, not just for good, but also for the sufferings. Sonny would have added also the bats that were used on Nicky Santoro in Casino in the cornfields.
Sonny00:05:24I would have given a much different.
Vic00:05:26The way that Frank Vincent used.
JVL00:05:28So we got two games left. We are one game under 500. If we win both of them, we get to finish the season with a winning season. Flash now has 20 strikeouts in seven and one third innings of work. Wow. Got to do the math there, Sonny. What? 20 Ks in seven and a third.
Sonny00:05:49Oh, am I doing the Ks per nine?
JVL00:05:51Yeah.
Sonny00:05:53That's about. That's about 23 Ks per nine.
JVL00:05:56Yeah. And four walks, no hits, no runs. So it's been a good, good season for him. And so here's, here's, here's how hopeless my team is. At our game on, on Tuesday, we have in the course of the game, two of my little kids, like the fifth graders, they, they drew walks and got to first base, each of them. And then on the next play, uh, the batter behind them hit a pop pop-up and these kids ran on the pop-up and, uh, and of course got doubled up, right? Double, double play because they're, they're running and I'm the first base coach. So I'm standing 10 feet away from them, shouting over and over, come back, stop, turn, what are you doing? Get back here, get back, but, but it was really funny is, uh, in the, in the, the second time this occurred, the kid who was playing first base for the other team was like my kids, you know, clearly didn't quite know what he was doing.
Sonny00:07:05So the shortstop who catches the pop fly
JVL00:07:08throws the ball to first base, this kid catch it and he's just standing there. I'm shouting at my kid, trying to get him to turn around and come back. And this first baseman turns and looks at me like with utter terror in his eyes, like what am I supposed to do now? I looked at him. I said, Hey 23, just step on the base. And then like his eyes change and you can see him like, is this a trick? Is this coach from the other team trying to trick me? I said, just step on the base. He's out. The innings over. It's okay. He like very tentatively touches the base. The umpire calls him out and then he looks and he's like, Hey, thanks. Yeah, you got it, buddy. No worries. That's funny.
Sonny00:07:54It was great. Why would you do that?
JVL00:07:57Because my kid was like halfway to third. That's why the kid, you should tell, you should
Sonny00:08:03tell, you should tell that kid with the ball, like go run to third, go touch third base.
JVL00:08:09My kid was never coming. And also, also like, uh, like, like, uh, uh, crash Davis, right? When nuke disobeys him and he then says to the, to the batter, it's going to be right down the middle, thinking of me kindly. You got to punish your own kids for their stupidity and idiocy. So I wanted to make sure that he was out. So he learned his lesson.
Sonny00:08:30That's true. I guess that's a good point. You do have to, you have to punish the people who don't listen to you. It's smart, smart thinking. I approve.
JVL00:08:37That's what I got. How are you sent to you don't sound so good. You feel okay.
Sonny00:08:41No, I got a, I got a, I, uh, woke up. I, it was, it's very weird. Like Friday, I felt fine in the morning. Uh, and as the day went on, I was feeling a little, little kind of grody. And then, uh, by Friday night, I was, I was like asleep by like eight. I was like, I don't feel good at all. Woke up the next day. I could like not really breathe. Uh, you know, and I, I, I, out of your nose, out of your nostrils, out of my nose. Um, and I felt real congested and like, didn't have any, but I wasn't coughing. I didn't have a fever. It was, so I was just like, ah, maybe it's just allergies, maybe it's, you know, whatever. Didn't get better. Went to the doctor. They're like, yeah, you probably have a sinus infection. Oh, um, uh, so we're gonna, we're gonna, what we're going to do is we're going to give you a steroid shot to clear up some of that pain.
JVL00:09:27In your sinuses?
Sonny00:09:28No, in my, in my glutes. Oh, right in the glutes, down the pants, just like prison stuck it in. You went to a prison, stuck it right in my butt, uh, um, but it was, uh, able to hold
Vic00:09:41Sonny's both shoulders with both hands, but,
Sonny00:09:44uh, it was fine. It was fine. So now, now I feel, now I feel slightly better.
Vic00:09:50That's an old joke. Sorry.
Sonny00:09:51Now I feel slightly better, but not great. And, uh, I don't understand what you guys were talking about, but you, um, uh, and the doctor, the funny part of all this was the doctor was just like, I'm going to prescribe you some, uh, some like amoxicillin. Yep. Cause it's probably a sinus infection, but if you feel better by Thursday, don't take it. Yeah. Like, just like, don't start taking it until Thursday and if you feel better, don't take it. And I was like, what, that's not how this is supposed to work. You're not, this is, you're, you're, you're putting a lot of pressure on me here. What if I, what if I single-handedly.
Vic00:10:28Yeah, wait, just wait, don't get on those antibiotics quite yet. That's a big one. And I'm the one who didn't get into medical school. That's a big one.
Sonny00:10:35Anyway, I'm, uh, I'm like just sitting on these pills now. We're taping this on Wednesday night. Yeah, I got them too. I'm probably, I'm probably going to start taking them Thursday cause I still am very congested. Uh, not, you know, not feeling. So you're going to take it. You're going to take it. Not feeling. It's a mild, that's a mild antibiotic.
Vic00:10:51It's not like in a strippy clean.
Sonny00:10:52Yeah, it's like a, I don't know, it's twice a day for 10 days. Pills are real big. You're supposed to take them with food.
Vic00:10:59Vic, are you sick too? Oh, well, you know, I had the tooth extraction last week. Oh God. JVL. We're going to talk about that. I told, I told a G rated version of this with Mary Catherine Hamm and I saved the R rated version for this show. No, you're giving me nightmares. So instead of gout update, it's going to be really be dental update. Thank you. So, you know, for, for, for listeners who enjoyed movies like hostile or the dentist starring Corbin Bernson, did you ever see that one? The dentist, the dentist too. That's late night on HBO. I stumbled upon it cause I was hoping to find something else. No, that's Larry. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. He was in a different one. He was in a candy man movie. Corbin Bernson is in the dentist. I had to double check. I looked it up.
Sonny00:11:49Are you thinking Dr. Giggles?
Vic00:11:51Yeah, that's what he's thinking of. Yes, that's what I'm thinking of. This is, um, sorry. This is, uh, Corbin Bernson, the dentist, which is really towards the end kind of, of Corbin Bernson's art. He was a hot commodity. He was, he was big. So, uh.
Sonny00:12:05Major league star, Corbin Bernson.
Vic00:12:07Yes, that's right. Uh, forever. Um, I, uh, went to the dentist and I was supposed to take 20 minutes.
JVL00:12:15Did you go to a different dentist than the first one who couldn't even tell which tooth was cracked?
Vic00:12:20No, no. I went to the same dentist. Oh, okay. Uh, this one, I usually go to his, I usually go to his dad. He did it and he was not able to get the whole thing out. So then he had to refer me to an oral surgeon. Oh, at least I didn't get charged. Uh, go to the oral search. Of course, nobody is around on Friday, the weekends. Everybody's gone. Everybody's gone. So I lived with the half tooth until Monday. I went to the oral surgeon. Oral surgeons are great. They really are very cocky. Except for my dad. They're very cocky. They know what they're doing. This guy looked like Bradley Cooper and he was like, oh, I do 10,000 of these really next time. Just go to, you know, the surgeons know what they're doing. And, and, uh, instead of taking like an hour, you know, of, of, of, of pulling and tugging and, and not being able to get it out. Uh, it was like, you know, the whole thing was maybe 10 minutes and he go boop, just like a great. And then he stitched it up, put in the graft. He goes up bone grafts ready in there and everything else. And I said, oh, um, so he goes, you may feel better. You may feel bits of it, but don't worry. It's just the graft. You know, it's like, feels like sand. Don't worry. It's totally normal. If you feel it come out because we, we pack it up, we pack it a lot and then you come back and do a, you know, a thing. And I said, what, what, what, what is that graft made of? And he goes, oh, cadaver. That's what I'm feeling in my mouth is cadaver, which is, I assume it's cadaver teeth that were like, I should never have asked.
JVL00:13:42I know you should just assume it's vibranium. Okay. It's vibranium. It's a high tech material. It's like bio ceramic. I like to think you would like
Vic00:13:50to think that it's the same.
JVL00:13:51What we do is we mash up the moon swatches. I was going to say the case of a moon swatch. We use that.
Vic00:13:57That would have been nice to know. No, it's cadaver. That's why it's sort of meshes. Um, but that's not the big revelation. So they did a CT scan and he comes back. He goes, I know you've come here to, uh, have that tooth extracted, but, uh, we found something else. And he shows me, it turns out I had another tooth from when I was a child or when I was a baby and it's buried in the other direction going up behind my nose above my palate. And he says, it's formed this cyst and we got to get it out. And he says, it's not a rush. This has obviously been something decades in the making, but it's going to make a mess of all your, you know, everything in there. Uh, so we got to do this. It's going to take, you know, the procedure itself is not long, but the recovery is going to be long. And, uh, it's, uh, yes.
Sonny00:14:45Did you watch the movie Malignant? That's what this is.
Vic00:14:47You've got that. What was in that? Who's in that movie?
Sonny00:14:51Yeah. With, uh, did we do that? We did. Yeah. Cause you and I did that because JBL didn't, didn't you didn't. Yeah. You weren't, you weren't going to watch it. No, uh, that's malignant. It's malignant. You have no, I just text you.
Vic00:15:03Look at the CT scan. Look at right. Be look, look at that CT scan.
Sonny00:15:08I want to see Sonny's reaction. He's got a, he's got a tooth in his nose.
Vic00:15:14Yeah.
Sonny00:15:14That's why you got a tooth in your nose.
Vic00:15:17It's wild. What's it do? I don't know, but I mean, I'd be really scared except for the fact that, well, why does it have to come out?
JVL00:15:24You're 48 years old. Yes. Why does it have to come out? He says that you made it this far.
Vic00:15:28That's what I'm thinking. Although he's going to come right up. It's going to come right up through your nose. It's going to destroy your teeth are going to be all affected and you know, your teeth look fine.
JVL00:15:36You weren't, you weren't eating all of pits at a diner. You would never even be in there. I don't know, man. I got to get it. You go get a second, second opinion, third opinion, second opinion. You go talk to a bunch of doctors before you let somebody go cutting into
Vic00:15:51your heart. I'm actually going to Sonny for my second opinion.
Sonny00:15:53You got to get that out. You got to get that out today. I don't understand how that doctor left it in there. That thing's going right up to your brain. It's going to get in there and fuck things up.
Vic00:16:02It's like a cyst. Okay. Well, what?
Sonny00:16:06I mean, that's like an actual tooth.
Vic00:16:08Yeah.
Sonny00:16:08It's not a cyst. It's a tooth. No, no.
Vic00:16:10But around it, around it. It's like, you know, cause usually it's a, it's like a sack. I see. I can see all that.
Sonny00:16:15I can see it. I can, I can see there's, there's angry reds. There's a lot of angry reds in there.
Vic00:16:20My daughter, my daughter said maybe that's why my nose is so big. That's what she said. Um, anyway, that was the big thing. Uh, I've been on pain meds because how are they
Sonny00:16:30going to get that out?
Vic00:16:31Uh, they'll drill through my skull right below, up here, below my, yep. JVL. Oh no. Aren't you? I told you it's like the dentist too. This is the dentist.
?00:16:45They're going to
Vic00:16:45drip. Drill in your face. Yeah. Don't do this.
Sonny00:16:47They're going to drill right in your face.
JVL00:16:49Do not let these, these sickos, these vivisectionists touch you. Yeah. Vivisectionists.
Sonny00:16:58JVL is an anti-dentite. Don't listen to him. I am not.
JVL00:17:02This is no shtick. No shtick. It's in there. If you do this without getting a second opinion, I will murder you. Yeah.
Vic00:17:09Yeah. No, I will. I will. Uh, why? So explain to me, why does he? Oh, he's. He says that it's killing your roots. Look at here. Because look at this. It's formed the sack that when you're a baby, the baby teeth are in a sack. The sack has now formed the cyst and you got to drain that cyst because it's, it's killing all, it's, it's killing all your roots here. Look at this.
Sonny00:17:27It's going to take, it's going to take over the rest of the mouth and it's going to, it's going to take over. And your teeth are
Vic00:17:32eventually going to fall out. He says this is not good. But again, this has been in the making for 49 years.
Sonny00:17:39The Vic twin that you absorbed in the womb. I think that's what it was. That has created this is going to take over your brain. Sonny, it was the only
Vic00:17:46thing left. The only thing that I was unable to resorb.
Sonny00:17:49It's the only thing left and that tooth, that tooth is going to take over your brain and you're going to be walking backwards, doing all the crazy things.
Vic00:17:56I didn't realize I was in an A24 or a Blumhouse.
Sonny00:18:00You're in a Blumhouse picture now, my friend. You're in, you're in an Eli, you're in an Eli Roth. This is turning into
Vic00:18:06Eli Roth.
Sonny00:18:06You are, you are.
JVL00:18:08How are you taking this so calmly? Are you, are you doped the fuck up right now?
Vic00:18:14I'm maybe a little bit, but you know, there's, I, I've been on pain meds since Monday and the worst part is even with it, you'll still be up like between one and four AM just because you'll have this throbbing, this dull aching because it was a deeply rooted tooth and it was like, you know, it's, it's, you know, this whole thing. I'm sorry.
JVL00:18:32I thought the, the rogue tooth was killing the roots. So you have a rogue tooth killing the roots of some teeth, but then the tooth that's broken
Sonny00:18:39has deep, was it synaptic? Wait, I thought it was a bottom tooth. It is.
Vic00:18:44No, no, it's an upper tooth. It's an upper tooth.
Sonny00:18:45Oh, it's an upper tooth that was broken. Oh, and that doesn't make sense. I just got a piece of the cadavers in my mouth. Hold on one second.
JVL00:18:52Pull your screen up.
Sonny00:18:54I can't. Question.
JVL00:18:55Yes.
Vic00:18:56Yes, Sonny.
Sonny00:18:56Question. Uh, do you think that the cadaver that is now jammed into your mouth is going to reactivate is going to reactivate the baby tooth?
JVL00:19:07Or maybe they'll go to war against each other. Yeah. Maybe, maybe the cadaver will kill and defeat that baby tooth. The baby tooth for you.
Vic00:19:14The Michael Caine movie with the hand.
Sonny00:19:17But then the Michael. No, but then the cadaver tooth will take over. Yes. We don't want cadaver Vic. We don't want killer.
JVL00:19:22We basically have cadaver Vic already.
Sonny00:19:23We don't want psycho killer Vic.
Vic00:19:25I can't even laugh. It hurts.
JVL00:19:28Look, you've got the Wolverine blood. That should solve everything.
Vic00:19:31I do. I will say this.
Sonny00:19:32So they're going to have to drill through your face.
Vic00:19:35Yeah. To get to the tooth. Underneath my lip above. And then he says it. So like, is it like through your gum? Because people have this all the time. Through your like gum? Buried inside.
JVL00:19:43Yeah. Does he say, I do 10,000 of these a year?
Vic00:19:45No. But I mean, I talked to my dad. He goes, oh yeah, I had, you know, that's normal. He says, you know, people have got to find these random teeth underneath their chins and different parts of their skull.
JVL00:19:54What sort of recovery time is he talking about? A week.
Vic00:19:58A week at home because he says, don't we want to take any pictures? He goes, yeah, it is. He goes, you don't want to take any pictures.
JVL00:20:03You could play a lot of civilization during a week.
Vic00:20:05But that is general anesthesia. That is going on for that. Can we do a special guess? I will not want to be awake for that. No. Yeah, he goes, you do not
Sonny00:20:11want to be awake. Yes. Can you do this operation at one of those teaching hospitals that's in like the arena? And then can we do a live episode from the operating room? Yeah, like they did like in the, you know, there's paintings.
Vic00:20:25There's Thomas Aiken's paintings from like Philadelphia.
Sonny00:20:27Vic is passed out. He's all spread out. And we can just hear like the whirring of the drill in the background.
Vic00:20:33Yeah, JVL will be in the front row.
Sonny00:20:35JVL is like making retching sounds off to the side. And I'm screaming, kill it! Kill it with fire! Kill it! Kill it! Kill it! The evil tooth!
Vic00:20:43Kill it!
JVL00:20:44Sonny will have the junior mints. Once you get the tooth out, you got to take it out to Mount Doom.
Vic00:20:49Yes. Throw it into the fires of Mount Doom to kill it. I do want to keep the tooth. I was talking to
Sonny00:20:54Well, you have to give it a proper Christian burial. Otherwise, it's going to come back and haunt you.
Vic00:20:57I, you know, I saw our friend.
Sonny00:20:59You got to get Father Harrison out there to fucking last rights, man.
Vic00:21:03Father Harrison needs to exorcise that tooth. You know, it's funny. I talked to a our friend. I saw our friend Christine Rosen today. Hey, she's doing great. I told her my situation. She said the same thing happened to they found a tooth that was like buried inside her cheek and they had this whole operation to get it out when she was eight. Anyway, it's weird that this thing was never found until now. That's the weird thing.
Sonny00:21:26Also, that is where I that didn't show up in any x-rays or anything. I mean, you get x-rays done like every six months or whatever. That's what he was saying.
Vic00:21:33OK, the doctor. Anyway, the good news is I have the pain meds. There's only one bad side effect to the pain meds, which is it tends to slow things down. But I won't get into those details. Anyway, speaking of no movement over the weekend, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness remained at the top of the box office with a rock solid sixty one point eight million dollars, followed by the bad guys in second place with seven million and in third place, Sonic the Hedgehog, two with four point seven million. It's the same three movies that have not moved except for the numbers box office, thoughts.
Sonny00:22:09I mean, the big number is everything everywhere all at once had just moving up percent decline. And it's now over forty seven million dollars. I think it was the highest grossing. It's going to be the highest grossing a twenty four film of all time at the end of this upcoming weekend. So big, big hit, big word of mouth win. Everybody loves this movie. Everyone who sees it loves it, raves about it. Nobody says bad thing about it. And it's a huge hit. It's going to get nominated for Best Picture. It's going to be one hundred percent, one hundred percent chance it gets nominated for Best Picture. That's a huge word of mouth hit.
JVL00:22:44Last weekend, while we were exiled to the Best Western, I went to the theater to see both Sonic 2 for the second time and the bad guys. So still not Doctor Strange. You went to see those two movies. I was entertaining kids. Oh, right. Got to find something. It was raining all weekend. It was cold. There was no you couldn't do outside. And so, you know, you can only spend so much time in the hotel room. So we went to see those. Those are both very bad kids movies. Yes, they're not. They are not great. But I heard it's made a lot of money, hasn't it?
Sonny00:23:17Yeah. Sonic made a lot of money. I mean, people were real excited for that Sonic movie. I mean, I've heard good ish things about the bad guys, though. People seem to like it. You didn't care for it.
JVL00:23:27I mean, it's not it's not aggressively bad. It is just disposable kid product. Is this remind us again? It's not. It's based on a series of books. Yes.
Vic00:23:37But the studio
JVL00:23:39it's DreamWorks. Oh, DreamWorks. And DreamWorks animation, whoever owns I think is owned by Paramount now. Is that right? OK, so because and I believe it's also streaming. So what I believe is a simultaneous release on Paramount Plus and in theaters. But it is one of these again, the theaters were both crowded for both Sonic and this. There's because parents are desperate to get their children out of the house. And these are it. And this is I mean, I
Sonny00:24:06I was looking I was looking at the upcoming release schedule. There isn't a kid's movie until Lightyear.
JVL00:24:11Yeah.
Sonny00:24:12And that's like a month from now. Like, it's crazy. The the the I will have
JVL00:24:16seen those two movies three more times. Oh, by the time I don't know comes out.
Sonny00:24:20I don't I don't I like I don't understand a lot of what the studios are doing. But the thing I understand least is Disney's decision to move so much of the Pixar content to directly to Disney Plus and skip theaters entirely. I just like it does not it does not make sense to me. I mean, I've seen it seems like a huge mistake and you know, asserting
JVL00:24:43dominance over Pixar.
Sonny00:24:45Well, I mean, I mean,
JVL00:24:46you know, you guys used to think you were hot shit. It turns out we do all the good animation now.
Sonny00:24:52No, I don't think I don't think it's that. I just think it's like I think they I think they did not have faith in a bunch of those projects and, you know, for whatever reason, we're like, we're going to we're going to put it on on Disney Plus. I the whole Disney Plus strategy is sometimes very weird to me because on the one hand, I get it like you want to build up your your your your service. But I like at the same time, I don't think people I don't think people are thinking, well, I'm if if I can't go see you know, soul immediately on Disney Plus, I'm not going to sign up for Disney Plus. I don't think anybody was like I I'm going to sign up for Disney Plus to see soul. I it didn't make any sense.
JVL00:25:34I can't remember the last good Pixar movie. I was pretty good. Okay, so I lost track of all is not very good. Oh, wait a minute.
Vic00:25:42Well, you know what? I get confused because
JVL00:25:44I'm one with the the the magical kids with the half dad is terrible.
Vic00:25:50Oh my gosh.
JVL00:25:51This is I'm yeah, they
Vic00:25:53they had such a hot streak, but that was during those years with what's his name up there? Lasseter Lasseter Mr. Grabby hands.
Sonny00:26:00Yeah, he got he got me to he had now they saw
Vic00:26:02do you remember that the the the it was in 2020 but it was one of those kind of shows that you know, devoted a whole segment to interviewing the the man behind, you know, he was 60 minutes. It was 60 minutes and and he had a train. He had a she was that he was an engineer like he would put on the whole thing. Mm-hmm. Totally normal. Perfectly normal.
Sonny00:26:26So she Hulk she Hulk's gonna save it though. All right.
Vic00:26:28So this is I didn't even I thought this was a movie. This is a TV series on who know on save this for
JVL00:26:33the let's save this for after the show for our chit-chat for the chit-chat because I I don't have anything else.
Vic00:26:39All right. Okay, me too. You know what? I thought we were going to talk about a possibly what you know, there was a new movie this weekend Firestarter. Oh, I saw it. I went to go
Sonny00:26:49see it. Terrible. Oh, terrible. It was like so here's here's my my like one sentence description of Firestarter. Yeah, you remember the story.
Vic00:26:58I hope it's not CGI fire.
Sonny00:27:00Remember? Well, there's definitely CGI fire, but you remember the story about from casualties of war how at one point they were trying to get a reaction out of Michael J. Fox for a shot and Sean Penn went up to him like behind his ear and whispered television actor into his ear to like get him all riled up.
JVL00:27:18Is that what he did?
Sonny00:27:19Wow, that's that's what I that's what I imagine every other movie in the movie theater multiplex going up to Firestarter and saying when it's playing like when it's done. Hey, hey TV movie because that's what this is. I mean it it is cheap-looking. It is really shoddily done. It's blunt. Some house it like they they did they day and dated it on Peacock. So it's like it's on Peacock, but it wasn't made for Peacock. This was made to be in theaters. This was made to be a theatrical release and it is genuinely one of the like it's just incompetent. It's just incompetent. Okay, what percentage
Vic00:27:55of the pyrotechnics is CGI?
Sonny00:27:58I don't know man some percent. I some some of it some of it is fake. Some of it is real.
Vic00:28:03Okay, I hope there's some real because remember that Angelina Jolie firefighting movie the forest fire
Sonny00:28:07that was like a
Vic00:28:09hundred percent fake now Victorino critically if I'm
JVL00:28:13wrong, but the original fire star. Yes, I love that movie was the first time Drew Barrymore had ever done coke on set of the movie.
Vic00:28:22Oh, was she already of that age?
JVL00:28:25Well, she was eight was like 10. Yeah.
Vic00:28:26Yeah, I know her. She did her
JVL00:28:29first lines of coke on.
Vic00:28:30No, I don't know about fire starter. I thought she was yeah, George C. Scott's in it. I thought she was a little bit older. When she started hit, I remember because I looked at some more recently she when she started drinking and it's like one year started drinking and like the next year got into that stuff, but I she was still kind of young at and during fire starter, but it was I like that movie. It's it's those are some great pyrotechnics, you know, it was like every actor had to be the you know, where they're you know where they're covered in flames, but you can tell they're wearing something underneath it the suit and then they can last for a couple seconds and then
Sonny00:29:08yeah, well that you got to keep walking forward. Yes, I'm going behind you. That's how that's how those things work. Yes, you know, you stop if you stop you're screwed because then the flame goes all in front of you and you're like, oh, I'm dead. That's what you say right before you die. That's what everyone says right before they die. That's what that tooth is going to say right before they pull it out of your head as as it's coming out. I'm dead.
Vic00:29:30They say, you know, Christine was said they saved that tooth for her because it looked like this. It looked like a thing inside that was inside her skull and apparently it's common. Do you know, do you remember who played Drew Barrymore's father in Firestarter?
JVL00:29:44No.
Vic00:29:45David Keith.
JVL00:29:46Not to be confused. You see where I'm going with David.
Vic00:29:49David who starred in the movie we are discussing on this show, which is now on Netflix, The Quick and the Dead from 1995. 1995. Five.
Sonny00:30:04Ninety five. Yeah.
Vic00:30:05So that's what we are talking about. All right. This show Sunday. How about a big boy review?
Sonny00:30:13So Quick and the Dead is basically imagine a a Bruce Lee martial arts tournament movie except it's a gunfight movie. Right. It's not it's it's it's a it's about a shootout draw in a tent. It's like a sweet 64 shootout. And the the a woman comes a mysterious woman not quite a woman with no name. She does have a name. I think we only actually hear it once. She's usually just called lady. But but but she does actually have a name in the credits. And I believe Russell Crowe's character says it once. Anyway, she comes to town and the this movie is masterfully made in the sense that in the first 12 minutes or so we are introduced to something like eight different characters who will essentially be all of the main characters from the shootouts. We meet the lady. We meet the criminal guy that she scars scar or whatever who she meets on the way in. We meet Ace Hanlon who's played by Lance Hendrickson who's a he does card tricks during his during his shootouts. We meet the barkeep the cowardly barkeep we meet the let's see we meet the shootest we meet the kid we meet Herod we meet court Herod who is played by Gene Hackman court who's played by Russell Crowe and a handful handful of other characters again this is in like the first I think like 14 minutes of the movie we are introduced to essentially every main character and we learn enough about their character like these these these sketches are so precisely and so quickly done that we learn enough about the characters that we really don't need to know anything else about them for the rest of the movie there's they're sketched out broadly but distinctly and they feel lived in before any of the shooting actually starts and then we get to the shootouts and it's just shootouts one after the other all of them are shot in a unique unique style Sam Raimi directed this and it is it is the first time Sam Raimi had a real budget I mean he had he had made Army of Darkness a few years before and that was you know decently budgeted compared to the other Evil Dead movies but was still like an 11 million dollar film was a Dino DeLorientis picture it wasn't you know wasn't a wasn't a huge budgeted thing this was I think 35 million or so he had made I can't he had made Darkman as well like a couple years before that but again that was like a 10 million dollar movie it's not not a huge not a huge budget so he had a lot of money to kind of play with and actually make a proper Western and he he he used that money to imbue it with his style and every every one of the shootouts is shot slightly differently he does a lot of Dutch angled zooms a lot of you know to describe what a Dutch angled zoom is it's the the zoom where you kind of tilt the camera in you come in at an angle right and there's there's a great sequence towards the end of the film where Herod and the kid are in a shootout and he essentially does a series of escalatingly sharp reverse dolly zooms so like you know what a reverse dolly zoom is think of the famous shot from Jaws where the camera is pulling back but we're still zooming in on Roy Scheider's face right where he like realizes that everything's about everything's about to go wrong that is a reverse that is a reverse zoom right reverse dolly zoom and he does this and throws in the kind of standard Sam Raimi you know tilted angles to it but he does it in such a way where each one of these zooms is quicker like the first one's five seconds the second one's four seconds and three seconds and two seconds and he does them at sharper and sharper removes so I think the first one was like a hundred millimeter lens then a hundred twenty millimeter lens hundred forty millimeter lens so the effect is more pronounced every time until finally the last one is just like a very quick zoom in on the guns as they're going off and then we see the two characters fall down and it's like well who hit who hit who it's just really well done it's really it's really fantastic technique it is a lot of Sam Raimi it is a very stylized movie you don't you know you don't see movies like this anymore because or at least you don't see movies of this sort made in this way very much anymore because studios don't know how to handle that kind of style unless you're you know unless you're you're working with somebody like I don't know the Wachowskis or whatever you just don't you don't get a lot of that anyway I'm rambling here because I I am I am I've long been in love with this movie huge bomb on release critics kind of panned it audiences didn't show up for it
Vic00:35:06did they pan it because they were expecting something else or was it following on the heels of something or
Sonny00:35:12no I know I think it's I mean it's just it's just a it's a slightly weird movie I mean it is a very it's a heavily stylized but very also like weirdly traditional western you know you could you could call it a revisionist western if you want to because it stars a woman it's also
JVL00:35:29three years post Unforgiven and at that point Unforgiven was still hanging over the landscape in ways that are hard to remember if you weren't there right Unforgiven was best picture and yeah just an enormous triumph
Vic00:35:43and this is post basic instinct for Sharon Stone post basic instinct yes but pre-Titanic
Sonny00:35:50this is yeah we'll go into I'll talk to you
JVL00:35:53about all the acting in a couple we can talk about
Sonny00:35:56that in a minute but I
JVL00:35:57I really think Sonny this is one of those movies that actually can't be appreciated on release because you have to live with it for a few years to really get all of what's great about it
Sonny00:36:10I think I think a couple of different things have to happen and and one of them is impossible to foresee which is that Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio go on to become two of like the six biggest male stars in the world and these these were you know DiCaprio already had an Oscar nomination because of What's Eating Gilbert Grape but this was Crowe's what what of Crowe's first couple roles in America in Hollywood
JVL00:36:36It is he so Russell Crowe He had made Romper Stomper Three years post Romper Stomper he this comes out the same year as Virtuosity which is his first American studio
Vic00:36:47with Denzel Washington
JVL00:36:48Look that is a terrible movie It's a terrible movie but Russell Crowe is electric in it Yeah Like it's it's just a bad movie and Russell Crowe is so good and you can't take your eyes off him and so this comes out the same year as Virtuosity and then two years before L.A. Confidential Yeah So you are we are on the cusp of Russell Crowe blowing up
Vic00:37:10It's funny watching it backwards though because you expect more of a role for Russell Crowe in this movie when of course it's before that happened
JVL00:37:17And DiCaprio this comes out the same year as Basketball Diaries and it is two years pre-Titanic So you so we are this we are coming out two years before career-defining movies for those two guys Sharon Stone this is three years after Basic Instinct the same year as Casino this comes out in 95 same as Casino and so she is at the high point of her career before she would get an Oscar and Hackman is I mean Gene Hackman has been around for forever right he's been around since the French Connection but it's three years after Unforgiven which was really the height of his yeah his career and he then is in a stretch of like five years where he makes The Firm Crimson Tide Absolute Power The Birdcage Get Shorty and Enemy of the State all in five years like that's a tremendous amount of quality work
Vic00:38:11and with such versatility he is so funny in The Birdcage so funny in The Birdcage and he's great
Sonny00:38:18well he's very funny in this he's very funny oh he's fantastic in this the thing about Gene Hackman in this movie is how subtly he plays almost everything with the exception of the big you know if you live to see the dawn it's because I allow it speech right with the exception of that it's just a lot of like he'll say something and Ace like Ace Hanlon will you know come back with a snappy retort and Gene Hackman will just go huh and it's perfect and it just is like amazingly powerful every time
JVL00:38:49so there are three moments of Hackman's in this that I love two of which are acting moments one of which is a writing moment and the first the two acting moments are both where he is bemused about the world around him and so he's having a conversation with Sharon Stone at dinner I think and he says my father was a judge does that surprise you you know and it's in that conversation that he reveals that the reason he's obsessed with court is because he's offended by the idea of conversion he doesn't think people can convert that like you know you are what you are and you have to recognize your nature but the other thing he's talking at one point when Sharon Stone is you know glowering at her he says to her do you have some particular problem with me as if like he understands that everybody in the world hates him but he's he can't understand what specifically it is that she hates him but it's great it's like this throwaway
Sonny00:39:47like he's it's so good what I love about his performance is that he is he is entirely under control with every single character except for court who he gets visibly kind of nervous and like like almost like I mean look I don't want to you know make the homoeroticism in the you know the American Western but like there's there's this weird like vague almost attraction that he has to court that that kind of comes up in this awkward energy that that he gives off and it is it is just really fascinating what Hackman does as a as a performance choice in this because again with everybody else he's just like huh okay yeah and with him he's like I can't I can't stop thinking about it court would have been like our first time together like like okay
JVL00:40:39this is my favorite Gene Hackman performance
Sonny00:40:42wow
JVL00:40:43it's not the best movie that he is in but it is my favorite
Sonny00:40:49performance yeah
JVL00:40:50it is where he just he does so many things that are off kilter in addition to being this great presence that the movie revolves around and so the other moment that I love is a it's a writing moment not an acting moment but as he is meeting Sharon Stone at the door of his house when she has come to dinner when he has the robe he steps aside and he says to her a prevu and this this educated guy suddenly switching to French in that moment I picked up that one is so great he's all what what performance of his do you like better it's certainly top five right
Sonny00:41:29I don't know I mean I it is one of my favorite Gene Hackman roles for sure I mean the the others that I would probably put up there right Unforgiven obviously French Connection Crimson Tide Crimson Tide I could see that Royal Tenenbaums as Royal Tenenbaum I mean he is he's very very good there I like them in no way I like them
JVL00:41:54in everything it's great heist right yeah but again a lot of those are sort of he's got one thing that he's doing and in this he's doing a lot of different things yeah
Sonny00:42:05the cast in this movie is stacked I mean like we we mentioned we haven't even talked about Gary Sinise but Gary Sinise is in it is Gary is the Gary Sinise so there's a story about this movie that Sam Raimi shot it and he wasn't in love with the ending and they were trying to figure out how to fix it and they went to Joss Whedon apparently the studio called in Joss Whedon Joss Whedon came in and you know was like oh this is what you should do at the end is the was that an addition the Gary Sinise stuff was that all was that all put together by Joss Whedon I've never quite understood what exactly it was that Joss Whedon contributed to the end of this movie
JVL00:42:46well he's not credited anywhere right I believe the story on this is that Whedon came in they did a bunch of stuff that he suggested and then realized none of it worked and they threw it all out and just went back to what they had I believe that's the story on this which I mean there was a cut of this where Lady bangs court and they cut that but the other thing to understand is that so Sharon Stone this is really her movie so this is funny to think but when this movie is made she is the biggest star in the film and the movie only gets made because she's attached to it she takes an EP credit on it
Sonny00:43:27producer credit not an EP credit oh I didn't notice
JVL00:43:30yeah executive producer she has an executive producer credit on it and she is the one who fights to get Russell Crowe cast there was somebody else who they wanted and Russell Crowe was a total unknown and she was such a huge fan of Romper Stomper that she fought really hard to get him and she fought for DiCaprio too they thought DiCaprio was too young DiCaprio was nervous about that and she said no no no it has to be him and so she she drove a lot of the the choices made around the movie and this is the high point of her career as a movie star and I gotta say at the time this was like I think people made people were fixated on the idea that it was a gender bending thing oh look it's a western and it's the woman who's the gun but now that we're past all that I think this is a really good movie to have spent your like superstar credits banking
Sonny00:44:25totally I mean it's too bad that it took everybody so long to appreciate it but no for the record I just want so Sharon Stone and Binder what's his name sorry Chuck Binder are co-producer they have co-producer credits on it not executive producer credits EP credits often a bit of a wank but co-producer producer those are but no I think this is a good this is a good movie to like you know cash in your movie star chits to to get produced and like she there's a story about so the reason the studio was nervous about DiCaprio is because his quote was way more expensive than they had budgeted for the role because he was coming off the Oscar nomination they you know his quote was a million bucks or whatever right you know and the studio was like we're not paying this kid a million dollars for this you know for the fifth billed role in the movie like we can't we can't do that and Stone was like I will take it out of my end you know I will I will cover it she paid his salary I believe she
JVL00:45:27she paid his salary
Sonny00:45:28she paid she paid she like stroked a check for him to be the the in this movie in that role and I don't I don't know that it works I don't know that it works as well without him I mean I could see putting other characters in or other actors in that role but like again part of the part of the reason this has become such an enduring success is because like three years later two two of the actors in it are the biggest stars in the world
JVL00:45:58you know what Leonardo DiCaprio's performance in this is absolutely electric it's it's he's great in this movie
Sonny00:46:08absolutely
JVL00:46:10great
Sonny00:46:11he's very good he is still a little he's still there there are a little there are a few little things about it that don't quite work for me but he is very very good in it he's very and she is so like here's the other thing that I've always kind of thought about this movie is that like I'm I'm really glad Sharon Stone used her credit and her power to get all this stuff made I have always felt that she plays it slightly wrong in the sense that I I don't love the there's there's a combination of like steely eyed man with no name cold eyed killer stuff right and then there's also like sometimes she's kind of scared and like unsure of herself and like and I like I feel like you need you need to just do the man with no name thing I don't I don't think like having her like having her like
JVL00:47:02flinching you know like flinch
Sonny00:47:05flinch when when the shots are going off I don't eh it doesn't work for me yes hello
JVL00:47:11I'm back
Vic00:47:12how are you
JVL00:47:12am I imagining it or do we see her boob
Vic00:47:18no I thought the the scene that I liked is when she's in the bed getting out and she gets up and you get the side shot where it's covered the gown is covering between is it though it it's it's so I didn't see the boob but I
Sonny00:47:33I watched it in 4k
Vic00:47:34I thought
JVL00:47:35what do you see in 4k Sonny
?00:47:37you see it all
Sonny00:47:39you see everything with with Patrick Stewart voice you see everything
Vic00:47:45that's right Leo DiCaprio I he's very cocky but it reminded me JVL of uh um wasn't he uh that story about him and Ellen Barkin going at it at uh arguing in This Boy's Life remember that cause he had a real attitude
JVL00:48:02tell me all about it
Vic00:48:03you told me this story
JVL00:48:04I got this story from you oh dear I don't even remember
Vic00:48:07yeah where he no I mean where she was like you know um you know let the grown ups deal with you know she had some sort of a thing and he he just you know was very um um like pushed back a lot on it or whatever what's the word I'm looking for snappy or very uh rude or whatever you know I mean he was a kid you know at the time with Robert De Niro but he was like oh you know whatever I mean he was mean you know to her so I mean but and that sort of comes through in this character but I thought that worked effectively uh you love this right Victorino I'm not a western guy and I'm not really I've seen this movie this is the first time I've seen it from beginning to end really
JVL00:48:45yes I'm surprised I'm so amazed how much you know about this movie I don't know anything about this movie I've seen this I've seen this thing probably 25 times I thought the camera angles
Vic00:48:53were kind of cheesy with the the side thing going like that it's kind of silly but it does very well in the quadrants um the plot is an A plus there's nothing not to understand A plus plus I do have questions I do have questions um uh well first of all there's the terrible twist at the end you were talking about Gary Sinise and you know the ending I didn't expect I didn't I didn't expect that to be how I thought she just missed yeah that her shot is like that would be like me with the gun you know I mean it's like oh I just just killed him alright so that was a great twist um but the the way the tournament worked and I liked also plot wise they didn't mess around it's like you know there was like usually the beginning you gotta get through especially westerns let's get to it it's slow there's nothing slow about this movie meat and potatoes yeah
Sonny00:49:45this this movie this movie rides on rails it cuts to the chase okay
Vic00:49:49so the bracket okay I understand we understand how brackets work you know you eliminate you move on to the next but I feel like the brackets get interrupted by anybody challenging anybody remember
JVL00:50:00so it's not a set bracket it's a pool yeah it's a pool and in any round anybody can challenge anybody else okay so it's not a set bracket you can't think of it like a bracket okay
Vic00:50:12so that's what I was saying it's like well is it one or the other I see uh the actor he's a very small part in this movie Goodson who plays the Swede who sucks but you know he's there the big guy he and Russell Crowe of course would be in the same movie together and fight each other and that would be Gladiator he was Tigress of Gaul
Sonny00:50:33oh yeah oh is that him
Vic00:50:35we who are about to die salute you and that's
Sonny00:50:38I didn't realize
Vic00:50:39as soon as he opened his mouth I'm like wait a minute I think it's the same guy and I looked it up he's the guy
JVL00:50:43who has the lion helmet right
Vic00:50:44with the face shield it was a fantastic it was a fantastic that's a great sequence um duration is an A plus it's an hour 47 I mean it's perfect right
Sonny00:50:53and it's it's really like a hundred minutes too yeah yeah that's counting the credits
Vic00:50:56and stuff like that okay action and violence I give an A there was bad CGI but it was worth the laugh because there is a scene the hole through the head
Guest00:51:05yes yes the Cantrell that shot's great though
?00:51:08I laughed
Vic00:51:08they actually did that they actually did that to a person you know what's funny because I didn't see him act after that so I figured they did they got a cadaver uh yes speaking of cadavers uh it's so shocking it's so ridiculous but it's so shocking and then later on uh Gene Hackman has the the hole through him right there's a tiny hole through him yeah okay it's silly but I like that I give it points it's a little bit silly I give it points
JVL00:51:31physics of the guy who gets shot in the head and it flips him all the way over
Vic00:51:35yeah Gene Hackman the last shot he's right okay um and that's because she's using she takes out the Smith and Wesson hand cannon that's what it is right that's what she's using that one I think that's what it is um the why does he have all the dynamite I don't know but it worked you know to explode and I
Sonny00:51:52how did she get the dynamite in his house
Vic00:51:54yes also a bunch of different storefronts are exploding so how about the people who are suffering like wait that's my storefront
JVL00:52:01they're all bad all the people in the town are bad too no
Vic00:52:04right
JVL00:52:05you see the you see the no cowards you see the way the townspeople jeer at court and they don't like that he's a preacher that's weird
Vic00:52:12but didn't they pay to get rid of they paid they paid to get rid of them
JVL00:52:16but they're they're cowards they're bad people too that town deserves what it has coming
Sonny00:52:20that town deserved everything it had coming they just sat there and watched while the marshal was killed and anyway
Vic00:52:29sex nudity is a scene but there's a great scene there's that great scene with the nightgown do they do it or do they not do it does she do it with Leo DiCaprio because he brags about it she totally ignores
Sonny00:52:39she says she says that he passed out
JVL00:52:41look Sharon Stone shows her boob how does that get a C I didn't see the boob did you see the boob Sonny
Sonny00:52:49yeah really you see it yeah you'll have to go back and watch it again Victorino you gotta watch in 4K it's like a it is a very high definition disc it's
Vic00:53:02okay so good to know now this Netflix streaming crap the other interesting thing is it's true the other interesting thing is there is no actual and you mentioned this I guess now so I mean I just like listening to learning this on the show but I expected there would have been some sort of a romance between Russell Crowe and Sharon Stone and there is none and I thought I could have I could have sworn in parts of The Quick and the Dead that I've watched in the past that there was some scene but I guess that was just there's some tension there's tension but there's clear attraction between the two and it's funny the only thing they have in common is through Gene Hackman's character here right you know he brings them into it and in the end but but yeah it's again it's nice to have a movie that's very straight forward and cuts the chase and it's entertaining
JVL00:53:54in most movies like this the tournament would be like the third act and here it's just like hey the tournament's the whole movie the tournament's ongoing the tournament's the movie we get to the tournament 12 minutes in and it's the whole movie and you forget
Vic00:54:07it's all the good parts you forget another great line and I must have seen it because I'd seen it before because I expect in my mind I imagined that Gene Hackman was going to say it and he does say it which is after he kills uh Leo DiCaprio and he had only it's only the way that only Gene Hackman delivers the line that way like nobody can deliver it the way he does he's standing over him and he goes it was never proven that he was my son do you remember that? I mean it's the way he says it it's the way that Gene Hackman says it um
Sonny00:54:36great thing about great thing about this movie squibs lots of squibs oh yeah no there's no CGI blood in this this is you know this is uh all practical you could I you would have a hard time making this movie now uh frankly you for what reasons? well you wouldn't you wouldn't be able to make it how they made it just in terms of like with all the guns on the set and and everything just because of how how how nervous everybody is about firearms but like on top of that all of the blood work would have been CGI they they wouldn't have done it with um they wouldn't do it with squibs they would do it with you know post post effects and it's just
Vic00:55:15visually refreshing and I understand that the difficulties with movies being made now because of during the pandemic and stuff but remember that western we uh recently did a show on the black western yeah with Idris Elba with Regina yes and all those the sets were terrible the harder they fall terrible sets so you know this was it's these old movies are great and they're refreshing to watch so
Sonny00:55:37well there there are a couple of like kind of funny shots in this movie where I'm pretty sure that they were shooting against a a painted backdrop oh like old school the town in the distance I was like I was like okay that is that is definitely like yeah or like Wizard of Oz it's like this is this is a
Vic00:55:53okay
Sonny00:55:54this is definitely a painted backdrop but it you know it looked this is one where Sharon Stone
Vic00:55:59opens the doors to like the barn or something and then the sun's shining I don't know unless they caught caught it just right no I think
Sonny00:56:05I mean who knows who knows what sort of color grading they did to get that that specific shot but it's it's also very funny because they have that shot where she's looking out in this like golden you know sun dappled yes cloudy and then the reverse shot is her riding away and it just looks like kind of normal it just looks
Vic00:56:22that happens yeah after after her climax career wise did she was that deliberate like she just I feel like she just fell off was she did she star in a bunch of movies that just didn't do well or did she just stop doing movies because I really I just never saw her again right when was the last time I saw her no she's been acting yeah
JVL00:56:45she's been acting the whole time and
Sonny00:56:47okay she's been acting less I mean I like you know yeah
JVL00:56:53less
Sonny00:56:53that was by choice that was the height of her stardom
JVL00:56:56yeah the last thing what here today she's in the flight attendant she's you know what I honestly I've always thought that Sharon Stone was underrated as an actress because she was such a sex symbol I mean she's a really interesting screen actress she's sort of fearless on screen and makes interesting choices she's great casino she is she really is amazing she's really great casino yeah I don't know I've always liked her
Vic00:57:30I've always thought she was great it was quite the year for her alright any other thoughts
Sonny00:57:36no thumbs up everyone should watch Quick and the Dead good movie
Vic00:57:39it's nice okay Spirit of the Week corrections shout outs anything what do you got

JVL00:58:27it looks as bad as anything Marvel has ever made post Netflix
Sonny00:58:33it looks so cheap it looks just terribly cheap
Vic00:58:36intentionally like oh we're gonna do something cheesy or no just like this is as good as it gets they'll watch anything they'll watch anything so just get out
JVL00:58:46I can't tell if it's geared at a different audience like maybe this is an attempt to get like tween girls to watch it or something but it who plays is it a famous actress who plays She-Hulk
Sonny00:58:57Tatiana Maslany
JVL00:58:58okay that answers that maybe she's big on TikTok
Sonny00:59:02she's well known she's well known she's been in some stuff
JVL00:59:05so I mean there has been a recent-ish like last five years I think run of the She-Hulk comics which people like quite a lot okay and say is written very well uh I have not sampled it so I could not say but there is enough source material to make an interesting-ish kind of series, right? I mean the idea is that she's a lawyer and you know she spends her time
Vic00:59:31but then she turns into a Hulk but a sexy Hulk but with muscles
Sonny00:59:35I
JVL00:59:36I can't imagine if you had told me that they were making a She-Hulk series for Disney Plus I can't imagine a version of it which would have repelled me more than this
Sonny00:59:51Yeah I mean it's like the John Byrne She-Hulk comics from the 1980s but like she's a feminist let's joke about how women are scared and angry all the time
Vic01:00:07What is this, like a 10 episode run? God only knows I don't know
Sonny01:00:13I'm sure it's fine
