This week's review covers Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Daniels-directed A24 multiverse film starring Michelle Yeoh as an overwhelmed laundromat owner. Sonny loves it unreservedly, describing it as a live-action cartoon somewhere between Rick and Morty and a Tex Avery short, calling it laugh-out-loud funny and unexpectedly moving, and singling out Stephanie Hsu as the film's best performance (his only knock: it runs a touch long). JVL says he doesn't know if he liked it but he loved it, predicts it becomes a cult classic that film students will write dissertations on, and raves about a 15-minute pre-show Michelle Yeoh interview he caught at the Alamo Drafthouse on date night with Shannon. Vic scores the plot a B ("multiverse — that's the answer to everything"), admits he needed Kate to narrate the film for him throughout, gives action/violence an A (praising the fanny-pack fight), and sex/nudity a C, but grows genuinely exasperated by the film's themes of cosmic insignificance, eventually declaring on-air that he's burned out on movies and needs six months off. Before the review, the trio open with Easter/Passover/Ramadan jokes and a tangent about a Unitarian wedding, Sonny previews his upcoming Disney World trip (magic bands, Thunder Mountain, Star Wars land, Avatar), JVL recounts his kids' baseball team getting demolished by a private school featuring a bearded eighth-grader, and Vic tells a long bit about a fellow parishioner's suspiciously long confession, before running down the box office (Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on top with $72.1M, Morbius cratering 74% in its second weekend). Vic closes the episode with a bewildering aside that Asian women aren't usually his thing, but he found Stephanie Hsu's Joy oddly intriguing.

From the show notes

Sonny's going on a trip. JVL beats the spread. And Vic needs a little love after his trip through the multiverse.

Guest00:00:00I'm not your husband. I'm another version of another universe. I'm here because we need your help. Very busy today. No time to help you. Across the multiverse. I've seen thousands of Evelyn's. You can access all the memories, the emotions, even the skills. There's a great evil spreading throughout the multiverses. And you may be your only chance of stopping it. Don't make me fight you. I am really good. I don't believe you.
Vic00:00:48Hello and welcome to another edition of the Sub-Beacon. I'm Victor Matus along with Jonathan and Sonny Bunch. Just a reminder, the Sub-Beacon is now available through Patreon. Go to subbeacon.com. You'll easily find us. Please subscribe. Tell your friends. And don't forget about the Sub-Beacon merchandise store at tpublic.com. Gentlemen, how are we? Happy Easter. Happy Passover. Happy Ramadan. Sonny, I get confused which one you celebrate.
Sonny00:01:18All of them.
Vic00:01:21Everywhere. All at once. Oh, hey, speaking of which, sorry.
Sonny00:01:27As a Unitarian.
Vic00:01:28Oh, then you would celebrate everything. All faith traditions. That's right. That's right. I've been. Have you ever been? I have a home here. I've been inside a Unitarian church.
JVL00:01:38I've been to a Unitarian wedding.
Vic00:01:40Oh, okay. Well, let me, you know what I noticed? And then you first. I've got a friend who's the editor of the Unitarian Universalist magazine. Wow. Wow. He is the editor-in-chief of the whatever their magazine is.
JVL00:01:54Universalist?
Vic00:01:55Universalist? Unitarian Universalist. It's in Maine. And it was an old church. Unitarians have been around for a long time vis-a-vis America. But inside they have all the symbols that go across. Yeah. Above. The wedding I was at. Yes.
JVL00:02:12Was because it was a.
Sonny00:02:13Is it just a coexist bumper sticker?
Vic00:02:15Basically. Yes, Sonny. It's coexist.
JVL00:02:17Basically. It was a, it was a very Catholic girl and a very Jewish guy. And so they decided to get married with neither. That happens. But also both. And so the Unitarian ceremony. This, this Unitarian pastor who kind of looked like a hobbit was gender indeterminate. They just did all of these, like they burned, they lit a candle together and they poured two colors of sand into a bottle together. And then they poured two types of wine together.
Vic00:02:48It was just all of these weird symbols. I hope they broke glass.
JVL00:02:52And I just thought to myself, they're really hidden for all the, they're gonna try to touch all four.
Vic00:02:57They're gonna cover all the bases just in case. Just in case. Anyway, it was lovely.
JVL00:03:01It was a lovely, it was a lovely wedding. And I, I am sure the two of them are still
Vic00:03:05very happy. Good. Sonny, how are you? What's going on? What can you tell us?
Sonny00:03:10Uh, I, by the time folks are listening to this, I will be on the grounds in Disney world.
JVL00:03:19Are you staying in star Wars?
Sonny00:03:20No, we're S I can't remember exactly where, which by the time it's pretty good. I don't,
Vic00:03:25it's not a really crowded time. Is it this time of year, I mean, I think it's, I think I will say, I think it's always kind
Sonny00:03:32of crowded. It's always kind of crowded.
Vic00:03:34Is this technically spring break too? Is it spring break for spring break for, I mean,
Sonny00:03:39it's not for us. I'm sure somebody somewhere has spring break spring break and I like in my county, but in, in, uh, in Texas we already had spring break. We had spring break in like March.
Vic00:03:49Question question. Uh, I meant, I assume it's one of the busiest times of the year, Easter time in Disney world. Uh, do you have bracelets?
Sonny00:03:57Yeah. So we have like four bracelets, magic bands. I, my lovely microchips implanted in your, the back of your neck. No, they just activate the COVID vaccines. When I walked through the gate, it's all, it's all good. Uh, no, I, uh, I, I, my, my lovely long suffering wife has organized this whole thing. So I'm planning on just following her around the park. So we've got, we've got bracelets. We've got like the four wrist bands. We've all got, you know, a wrist band. Uh, there's some, there's some sort of app that she has downloaded that like lets us plan the different rides. You can monitor what the time, what the wait times are. We have like, we have like two fast passes or something. I don't know.
JVL00:04:44What is your, what is your kingdom order that you're doing?
Sonny00:04:49We're doing, we're doing Magic Kingdom the first day. We're doing Hollywood Studios the second day, which is the, uh, that's where the Star Wars is and also like car, like cars stuff.
Vic00:04:59Oh, they do a car thing. I thought that was just Disneyland. That's exciting.
Sonny00:05:03I guess. And then we're doing Magic Kingdom again the third day. So we're, we're there for three days. So we're doing Magic Kingdom two days. You figure we can't do everything in Magic Kingdom in one day, two days, two days probably.
Vic00:05:14When we were there many, many years ago, I, the kids were so small, they didn't know any better. So I said, let's just do Magic Kingdom. They thought it was amazing because they don't know that there were other things. Yeah. Now of course they're wise to it.
Sonny00:05:26Disney, Disney World is very intimidating. There's too much stuff there. Like I'm, I like, I don't.
Vic00:05:31I did all the planning. I did all the planning.
Sonny00:05:32I am not a, I am not a Disney person outside of the fact that I generally enjoy Disney products, Star Wars, uh, Marvel, you know, uh, the, the cartoons, the various Pixar cartoons. Like I like, I like Disney fine, but I'm not a Disney person.
Vic00:05:50Yes. Jonathan, Jonathan and I actually know, we, we, we know somebody who, uh, a former contributor to where we used to work who is big Disney person. We'll do to be discussed off air, but you know who I'm talking about person was also big on Lord of the Rings.
JVL00:06:07You're describing, you could be describing me. Yeah. I like that. That really doesn't narrow it down. Judging by the ages of your children, the very first place you go when you get into the magic kingdom, you make a beeline for the hall of presidents because that is electrifying time is of the essence. Do, do, do try to get to the magic kingdom before it opens. We are that so that you can be there for the opening ceremony. Cause the opening ceremony where they come in on the train, cause they've got a real train, everything. That's super cool. Uh, without telling. Have you ever been to a Disney store for the opening ceremony? I know like, like the one in the mall, the one in the mall, every Disney store when they open does like a whole magic thing. And if you happen to be there, they'll like rope, your kids are like, do you want to work the magic to open our store? And it is like that, like every day at 10:00 AM. Yes. Every single day at 10:00 AM at Disney. Somebody kill me again from the citizens. Yeah. That's it's like the itchy and scratchy land. It is like itching scratchy land every, every hour on the hour. It's New Year's Eve. That sounds amazing. But if you've got a four year old kid, you know, like they think to themselves in this giant interpersonal, you know, impersonal mall, there was a store that was waiting just for me to work my magic. Yeah. It's beautiful.
Vic00:07:31Um, I, are you, uh, where you are staying? Is it, um, um, monorail accessible or launch
Sonny00:07:38accessible? Cause there's a boat too, right? I don't, I think we have to take a shuttle
JVL00:07:43to the magic kingdom. I think you're in, you're in the Disney world properties, but not in
Sonny00:07:51one of the resorts. No, we're, we're at a Disney world resort, but it's not on the monorail.
JVL00:07:57They're there. So now you're like the Hilton or something. No, it's like one of the, it's
Sonny00:08:02like one of the Disney, it's just not like on the, the monorail. I mean, it's, it's the far moon of Endor. It's it's we, we, we, we couldn't, we, we had all our choices. Like we, we, I dunno, there are like five different, this is what I'm talking about. There's too many options. There are like five different Disney properties. Sure. So like we, you, because we're staying at one of them, we can go before it opens. Oh yeah. Well that's key. And the other thing
Vic00:08:26is, I mean, they may Peter out in the afternoon because they, you know, if it's a long day, depending on like what the crowds are like and things like that.
Sonny00:08:34I, yeah, I assume that we're, I assume that they're going to be asleep by like
Vic00:08:38five. Ah, yes. Oh. And then when they're out, they are conked out. But, uh, for me, uh, I planned the whole thing cause I'm, I'm the travel planner in the family. And the one challenge I had, and it was a wonderful trip, but the one challenge I had was meals because it's like, you know, you do have a meal plan, but I didn't, you know, the meal plan JV,
JVL00:09:00I did not do it. No, it's not really worth it. Cause there are lines everywhere for the meals. You just sort of catch as catch can. Yeah. And it's okay. I got to get them on thunder mountain railroad. Oh, because that is the best training wheels roller coaster ever. Yes. It's the perfect level of thrilling, but fun. Yeah. For kids. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So your kids are probably too young to do space mountain Santino. Oh yeah. But the thunder mountain railroad, my smallest is under 40
Sonny00:09:31inches. Yeah. Oh right. The hike creates some, creates some issues. Thunder mountain do thunder
JVL00:09:35mountain. Okay. Okay. Not counting haunted mansion. Yes. I would say Eddie Murphy floating
Vic00:09:41around. Stop. Stop. Uh, go steady. Murphy doing raw. I love of all those rides, the haunted mansion is my favorite. Uh, but uh, there, there's no, there's no, you liked Ariel's grotto where you're riding at a shell. Yeah, that was, uh, it's that I've done that one as well. That used to be, I believe Ariel's grotto is used to be where, uh, 20,000 leagues
JVL00:10:08under the sea was. It was, that is correct. Okay. How about, uh, how about jungle cruise? Have they redone jungle cruise post rock or no? Oh, that's a good question. Or is it
Sonny00:10:18still the, the, uh, the OG guys now? Cause I'm sure that's a, that is a ride that we
Vic00:10:23can do with the OG, but you know, they, I don't know. They, a lot of these things, pirates
Sonny00:10:27of the Caribbean. I'm just hoping they have some free guys first. What was that? Sunny? I'm just hoping they have some free guy rides when I did a long time ago, the old pirates
Vic00:10:37of the Caribbean is great. And then when I, we went back with the kids, it was Johnny
Sonny00:10:41Depp. Yeah. I don't know if they're still about the animal herd. Yeah. Now it's the animal herd. It's actually, he's chasing Amber heard around. Right. Cause they, they actually remove that because I'm sure. I'm sure. It's funny because that's still in the movie. That's like, there's like a shot in the movie and the first one where they, they actually have that. But I'm sure that's not allowed. And then are you going to rapey? Are you going to go outside of Disney? Go to like wet and wild? No, no, we're not doing, we're not doing any of the like, we're saying my goal is to never set foot on any property that is outside of like the police zone of Disney. Like I want, I want, I don't want to go and I don't want to risk going anywhere where they're not in charge and you could get groomed. Yeah. I, well, I mean, that's the goal. Let us know how the Mulan ride is. I'm excited for, I'm excited for the protests. I assume there will be protests. Um, no, I, uh, it should be fine. I'm again, I'm, this is all, I'm leaving all of the, the planning up to, I'm, I'm mostly muscle at this point, just grabbing the children anytime they try and wander off. Yeah. They
JVL00:11:57have lockers when you first go into the magic kingdom. And so depending on how much gear you've got for like $2, you can just get a locker and stash everything there. We did
Sonny00:12:07not do, we did not. It's not like we're bringing like, well, I don't know. We're not going to be, we did not do strollers. We're going to bring wipes, a backpack, water, sunscreen. We're renting a stroller there. We're renting a stroller there for the park because Charlie still small enough that his legs will get tired after like two hours. You don't want to just carry him. Yeah. Cause I carried, I carried our daughter. God, no. That would
JVL00:12:30be a nightmare. So Shannon and I used to go to Disney world once a year together. Does
Vic00:12:36this mean you are technically before we had kids technically consider yourself? Did you
JVL00:12:40have like membership privileges? You got to be a member of the Disney vacation club to really be a Disney person. I think. Right. You have to have signed on for the Disney vacation club. Uh, right. And we have friends who are full in Disney. Like when you're in our house, the only Sonos channel they stream is the Disney channel. Like they, they do Disney, you know, 10 times a year. Uh, I have to say we had so much fun doing it without kids that the prospect of doing it with kids seems kind of horrible. Well, I heard that
Vic00:13:13story. Oh, so you haven't done it with, you
JVL00:13:15haven't gone with never done with kids because it can't possibly as much, be as much fun
Vic00:13:19as it was without kids. Uh, well, it depends. Uh, uh, believe me, you could not possibly
Sonny00:13:26be as much fun with all the, you've got like, you've got like 17 children, so it would cost
Vic00:13:32like a million dollars a day. It might be really expensive. Uh, yeah. And, um, you know, you can also do, uh, with audiences with various, uh, characters too. Hmm. How about bell princesses? Yes. I did many of the princesses. I mean, I think
Sonny00:13:52they're still all socially distanced. I think you can't like go and hug. You can now go up to Mickey mouse. They said, I'm the thing I'm most excited for obviously is star Wars land, which sounds like, but like my kids haven't my, my, my oldest has watched star Wars once. They will, they, they, they do love baby Yoda. So maybe there'll be some baby Yoda stuff, but like they, it's not like they've watched the Mandalorian. Are you going to
JVL00:14:18buy your kids each one of the lightsabers that you use to go around the, and you buy a special mystery crystals and maybe you get the rare black crystal. And then you're dragging
Sonny00:14:27them everywhere by the way. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. But we are doing the, we are doing the build a droid thing. We're not, we didn't do build lightsabers, but they have like a build a droid. Huge mistake. Build a little. No, no, you need to get them each lightsabers
JVL00:14:39so you can beat the crap out of each other with them. See, that's, that's exactly what
Sonny00:14:41we're trying to avoid. I would build.
Vic00:14:44I don't want 88 assassin droid. Oh, and don't forget Sonny avatar, which is people say John Potter, John Potter, it said most amazing ride of all time. Is that in Hollywood studios
JVL00:14:59and might be animal kingdom. I don't know. Is it now now Disney's animal? How would the
Vic00:15:07avatar fit into animal kingdom? I don't know. They just, cause it's like jungle planet. Yes. I don't know. They stuck. Okay. Uh, JVL, good luck, Sonny JVL. What is going on with you? Big news. Huge news. Had our first game today. Oh, wait a minute. What was the one before
JVL00:15:25it was always scrimmages right now? Right now. So we've been practicing for, this was week three, right? It was a long rainy week before we had a rain out last week. So we missed our first game and we played, I won't say the name of the school, but a very Richie rich private school. $46,000 a year. Wow. For the middle school tuition, not the high school for the middle school, the high school gets more expensive. And this is a K through 12 place. I want to
Vic00:15:57throw a name, but we won't throw names.
JVL00:15:59Uh, so a very, very large school. So big that they in fact have two middle school teams. Uh, one of them, uh, features a, a young fellow whose father is currently a starting shortstop in the, in major league baseball. That's not fair. Uh, and we show up with our team that is half fifth and sixth graders and is 50% now 40, 40% has never played baseball at any level before three weeks ago. And, uh, we're sitting, you know, looking across the field at these kids who were a huge, cause they're almost all eighth graders. There are a couple seventh graders, but they're all eighth graders. Wow. They all play travel ball. One kid, no shit, has a beard. Stop like a Sonny Bunch beard. I am not kidding. Probably
Vic00:16:52better than mine. I'm not kidding. That's a, that's ridiculous. Eighth grade. Oh, so
JVL00:16:58I, uh, anyway, they, they have a button. They, this team had three or four, this team had three or four kids taller than me and I'm six two. Uh, and, uh, and we lost for nothing.
Vic00:17:12That's a respect. And I gotta tell you, no, you were, you know, that feels like winning
JVL00:17:17the world series. Yeah. Uh, I, I honestly thought we're going to, we're going to give up 12 runs an inning. Now there's some caveats, uh, because of scheduling, a scheduling foul up on the part of the fancy school and not on the part of our school. Uh, the game was time limited to one hour, not two hours. Uh, and the, the other team, the other team clearly, the other coach, clearly having watched us in warmups understood exactly what was going on. They were not playing to win, but on the other hand, neither were we, I didn't pitch flash flash. Didn't pitch in this, in this thing because I didn't want to, you know, we had an hour and I didn't want to roll him out there. I wanted other kids on. I didn't want the coach's kid to like, you know, who's your starting pitcher, the coach's kid. That's, that's beat. So, uh, you know, we could have gone harder than we did. Obviously they could have gone hard. We all went down for nothing. That's tough. We had runner. We got runners on base. I was going to ask you a couple times. That's great. Uh, and it was, it was, I felt I coming away from this, I feel very confident that at least some team we run into, we will be able to beat because this was a, did you, this was essentially a travel league all-star team. Yeah. And you know, like there's no world in which we would have beat them probably unless I just started flash and made him throw until his arm fell off. But on the other hand, uh, how many innings do you get through in one hour? Uh, in our case to two innings, uh, not great. We didn't really even get the full hour cause we started a little bit late. But, uh, but the point is we were basically competitive and they pitched their best guy. So they, they, they pitched their, their actual number one starter. And we did not scary to some of your players to face that, uh, some of them were overmatched. They basically hung
Sonny00:19:17in, you know, uh, we got a couple hit by pitches, which was great. And you know, the, the boys
JVL00:19:22very bravely didn't rub them, didn't touch the spot where they got hit, just drop the bat and jog down to first base. Uh, but I didn't, I didn't play a couple of the fifth grade kids who had experienced before because I just thought I'm, I'm, I am not comfortable putting you in the batter's box. Speaker 2: Against an eighth grader who weighs 170 pounds, who's throwing like 60, 65. That's cause these kids aren't, they, they just aren't ready to protect themselves. So I feel bad cause I want everybody to play, but also probably thankful they didn't have to face that, especially if they were, maybe, I mean these, these kids, the, my, my little, my little kids on this team, they're little and they look, you know, they look like they're closer to Charlie's age than they are to flashes.
Vic00:20:10Speaker 1: So anyway, Victorino, how are you buddy? Speaker 2: I'm doing fine. As you know, we're reaching the tail end of, uh, Lent. Uh, so last weekend I went to confession. Yes, I went to confession, uh, three hours of your life. No, no, no. But we're going to get to this. Uh, I like, I like not go to be like one where like the priests, if I know they're going to be, you know, like if, if either they know you too well or the, you know, they're particularly hard. I tried to go to a different church, you know,
JVL00:20:39Speaker 1: I don't go to confession. Speaker 2: Anywhere where I know the priest.
Vic00:20:42Speaker 1: Right, right, right. Exactly. Or if I do, I, I go to a, use the screen and I talk in the, I talk in the dub voice, you know, like the one for the date line. I put on the date line voice.
JVL00:20:51Speaker 2: The people who are like, Oh, it's fine. You're just like Neil next to father pass.
Vic00:20:56Speaker 1: Yeah, it really depends. Uh, so, but here's the thing. So we get in there. I said, I want to get at, you know, uh, you know, get in early, but of course there's a lot of other people there. And, uh, you know, there was at, at, at this point there's just one priest, right? There's one priest. So, um, guy goes in, eventually comes out. This old lady goes in and you know where I'm going with this old lady goes in at least 15 minutes, a lot to get off her. That's what I'm wondering. I said like, what on earth are they doing it? Well, 30 years ago she
JVL00:21:25killed her husband.
Vic00:21:26Speaker 2: I picture, you know what? I told this to Kate cause she's, I said, I leaned over, I go right now. I'm wondering if she's saying to the priest, all right, well they said it was going to be a clean hit, but it wasn't, you know, and there were some civilians and I had to take care of them too. Speaker 1: And then, you know, I didn't have enough lime. Speaker 2: Father, I used arsenic. Speaker 1: Right. You know, I mean like really 15 minutes. Um, as opposed to me, when I go in, I know what I'm going to say. I am in and out.
JVL00:21:51Speaker 2: You've done your examination of conscience.
Vic00:21:53Speaker 1: Yeah. You know what? I in and out lightning speed. Speaking of lightning speed over the weekend, Sonic, the hedgehog to race to the top of the box office with 70, wow, 72.1 million dollars followed by Morbius in second place. Speaker 2: Which tacked on another 10.2 million, followed by the lost city with 9 million box office thoughts. Let me just say this.
JVL00:22:16Speaker 1: Is that a 77% drop? Let me say this. 10 million is a lot of money. That's
Vic00:22:21all I'm going to say. You know what? We don't have 10 million. That's a lot of money. Good for Morbius. Racking it up. Uh, box office thoughts, fellas. I, I told you guys that
JVL00:22:32there was something in the water on side out that not only G money, but all of G money's friends and like every kid I knew under the age of, of nine was like hyped up at talking to each other about this movie, a sequel. The first one I think aged very well on streaming. Uh, it was the, and the truth is now that I've seen the first one 19 times, it's fine actually. Like of course it's a mess and all that stuff, but it's, it's kind of cute and it's an actual movie. It's an actual movie with characters who have arcs and there's, there's a first act, a second act and a third act. And it's, you know, it's not like a great movie, but it's a movie. And that, and the weird persistence of Sonic in the culture as a character that people care about for reasons I don't understand, but uh, but they love it. He's on all the Nintendo games. He's a playable character. And do you remember how they had to redo the graphics and stuff for Sonic and it was, Oh
Vic00:23:35my gosh, what a nightmare this is going to be and everything else. Well, it was because
Sonny00:23:38he had like people teeth, right? Something like that or like his, he had, he had weird teeth and people were like, how dare you besmirch the good name of Sonic. The problem wasn't
JVL00:23:48the fidelity of it. It was the creepiness of it. Like it didn't look fun. It looked
Sonny00:23:53creepy. Uh, okay. So I saw it. Did you boys see it? You guys, you went to go see Sonic too, JBL. You said it was terrible. Uh, it's very bad. Yeah. J pods are the same thing.
JVL00:24:08At one point, G money turned, not just to me, but literally turns to the other dad sitting on the other side of him, a grown ass adult who he has never met before. And G money exclaims to him, isn't this movie amazing? The guy who's there with his own, like three kids under the age of seven looks at him. And honestly, he basically gives G money the mad max, like
Sonny00:24:32thumbs up. Uh, that's the magic of the movies, baby. Yeah, that's right. Bringing people together.
JVL00:24:45That's right. Love it. But it was a absolutely packed auditorium in the big show at the Alamo and almost every, almost every, almost every showing was, was close to sold out. Does your,
Sonny00:25:01does your season pass cover the big show? There's a surcharge. Okay. It's like a dollar
JVL00:25:06surcharge or something.
Sonny00:25:07I'm happy to pay it. How is, how is Jim Carrey? He's barely in it. Jim Carrey, who's retiring after this. He's done it all. He's done enough. He's done enough. He's done it all. He is
JVL00:25:17barely in it. Uh, James Marsters is barely in it. James Marsden. Marsden. Yeah. Marsden is barely in it. Uh, the, the very attractive woman who plays his wife is barely in it.
Vic00:25:27Is there a, another sort of main famous actor or no? How about knuckles?
JVL00:25:31Uh, the, the, the, this is basically a cartoon. I would say 80% of the movie is nothing but the animated characters interacting with each other.
Sonny00:25:40Uh, okay. And Morbius. Yeah. Morbius dropped like a rock. I mean, 74% 74% is very, very bad. I mean, it's worse than like X-Men, dark Phoenix and you know, all sorts of, all sorts
Vic00:25:56of terrible, terrible movies. Do you remember dark Phoenix? Because the trailers went on
Sonny00:26:00for, I think 20 years until we, I do remember dark. I remember, I know for a fact that I saw it. I couldn't tell you much about it.
JVL00:26:10Game of Thrones girl. And, uh, your, your sweetheart, Jessica Chastain.
Vic00:26:15Yes. Yes. Very weird. Not sure what's happening role. Uh, but kind of, kind of hard. She wasn't
Sonny00:26:26Emma Frost, but she was some sort of like, no, she's an alien. Oh, that's right. Aliens.
JVL00:26:33That's right. Aliens. Well, I, you know, at, uh, yeah.
Vic00:26:36At, uh, at the AMC, uh, I had seen Morbius. They put it up in auditory mate, which is a big one, big theater. And then the next week when I went to see everything everywhere, it was said that was auditory mate. And then Morbius got shuttled down to like the basement.
Sonny00:26:54I mean, it's, it is, uh, it's an enormous, enormous drop. There were, there were definitely people on Twitter who were like, Oh, the critics are being too mean to this movie. It's so good. You fans love it. Fans will love it. And the critics hate it. And first off, it got a C plus from cinema score, which for a comic book movie is very bad. Um, but on top of that, it was clear. It was like all the, all the exit polling, the, the, the rent track and everything was, was terrible. It was like a 40% recommend or some, some ridiculous number. Um, so the fact that it drops 70, almost 75%, you know, 74% or whatever is not at all surprising. It's a bad movie that people don't like. Uh, and it's good. That it, that it is, is dropping down the charts. I just, I, I don't understand. Again. I like the only reason for this movie to exist is to set up further Sony movies. And it does that so poorly that it is really just failure on every level sex. Oh, that's, that's what
JVL00:27:57this is. The sinister six movie that they were hoping to do with Jamie Foxx.
Sonny00:28:05With Andrew Garfield. Yes, but they basically made going back to that. No way home is basically
Vic00:28:10a sinister six movie. I know you have the three guys that I just like, they're going
Sonny00:28:14to, they have a, they have a standalone Craven movie coming. I mean, they have a Craven the
Vic00:28:19Hunter movie coming. Who plays Craven the Hunter? Aaron Taylor Johnston. Oh, okay.
Sonny00:28:26He's the guy he was in a, he was in, I think the first Godzilla, the one with Bryan Cranston remember, but he was also in a tenant. He was the British. Soldier. He was like the British commando at the end of the movie, the other guy. No,
JVL00:28:40no, that's Robert Pattinson. Not Robert Pattinson. Let's get to the real movie because there
Vic00:28:44is a lot to talk about. Yeah. Okay. Everything everywhere all at once. As if, as we have been dropping hints throughout this episode, this is what we're discussing this week. Everything everywhere, all at once, uh, strictly in theaters, Sonny, how about a big, you know, Sonny make
JVL00:29:00Vic do it. Make Vic describe, make him describe what the movie is.
Sonny00:29:05Let's have a dramatic dialogue about, uh, Vic, Vic, what would you say? Describe to me the setup. Cause this is the easiest part. Describe what is the set before we get to
Vic00:29:19any of the sci-fi stuff. A woman's life. Describe to me the setup. A woman's life is falling apart, both as a mother and as a wife and as a daughter. And she seems to be suffering as a business owner and a business woman. And seems to be suffering some, some sort of midlife crisis, psychotic break where she starts to hallucinate that there are other universes entering her life. And in fact, she's using this idea of a multiverse, uh, to reconcile all these contradictions and in the end finds peace by sticking with her husband who she was thinking of divorcing. The end.
Sonny00:29:57Okay. That's a, that's a read on it. That's a, you know, I don't want to say that you're bringing your own things into this. I just think, I just think that it's a movie about Kate, you know, it's a movie, it's a movie about a woman who is settled and she needs to realize that she's happier having
Vic00:30:15settled. You know what I thought about, because these are, I mean, they're some movie about choices and decisions and you do wonder what happens if you didn't do this, you didn't do that. There's lots of things. And I think about this not to get off, cause I want to get back to, you know, the, the big boy review, but, uh, you know, if I, if I didn't agree to go to Kate, uh, to, uh, her brother's wedding, or if I ended up not, you know, go, she, or I went to another school instead of Georgetown with Northwestern or something. And, uh, and then what? And I think for her, she probably still would have ended up with somebody, uh, very successful and handsome. And I think I probably would still be probably an intern coordinator. No, no, you are Kate's final destination. Oh, okay. There was no way there was no way
JVL00:31:04she was going to be able to duck you. No matter what choices she made, you were coming for
Vic00:31:09her. There's that theory. And that is also ties into everything everywhere where she's very successful and yet still meets him and still wants to, there was an episode of mad about you exactly about this. Okay, go. I'm done.
Sonny00:31:20All right. So, uh, Michelle Yeoh stars as Evelyn Wang, who is, as Vic mentions, a woman whose life is kind of falling apart. Her husband is played by Ki Kwe Kwan, uh, AKA short round from, uh, Indiana. And the temple of doom and also data from, uh, from Goonies. Um, he plays her husband. He wants to divorce her because he's unhappy. Uh, she is also unhappy as she is, uh, you know, kind of miserable running the laundromat, her daughter, uh, who's played by Stephanie shoe in this movie, uh, who her name is joy. She is a, uh, she, she is a lesbian and she doesn't want, uh, Evelyn does not want her father, uh, to learn that joy is a lesbian. Um, is played by the great James Hong James, uh, the great James Hong. He gets a great, um, you know, Michelle Yeoh gets a great to the great Michelle Yeoh, great, great James Hong. Anyway, uh, in the midst of all of this, the tax woman come, the tax woman has cometh for, uh, for the laundromat because they have been taking excessive expense deductions made me sweat a little bit. Uh, cause I was thinking about, you know, the fact that I wrote off every trip to the, to the Alamo draft house last year, you know, cause, uh, that's, that's a, that's all business. It's all business baby. Um, uh, but, uh, you know, pay a visit to your home office. Jamie Lee Curtis is, is excellent in that role. Uh, and in the midst of all that, uh, we find out there's a multidimensional interdimensional crisis. The multiverses, uh, is on verge of, of collapse because an evil entity known as Jobu Topaki has been running rampant through, through the multiverse, taking, uh, trying to kill everyone infecting it with, with her nihilistic rage about the, the emptiness of life and existence in a, in a world where if everything can happen, nothing really matters. So that's, that's the basic, that's the basic setup. Michelle Yeoh's character, Evelyn, she has to-
JVL00:33:20You're making it sound much more linear than it actually is.
Sonny00:33:23Well, so this is, I'm trying, I'm, I'm trying to explain the, the basic thrust of the plot before I get to what the movie actually is. And what the movie actually is, is a live action multiverse cartoon. It's something like Rick and Morty crossed with a Tex Avery cartoon. Because the, the thing about this film is that, I don't know, I don't know how many people, I don't know how many of our listeners actually watch Rick and Morty, but Rick and Morty is this really amazingly good animated show on Cartoon Network. It's extremely popular, millions and millions of people. It's like one of the most popular shows on basic cable. But that show is basically just steeped in complete nut cynicism. Um, it is, it is an absolutely cynical, you know, look at, at a, the multiversal world and, and also like what it means to be alive. Uh, this movie is the opposite of that. This movie is like very heartfelt and genuine, almost like I, I have had people describe it as treacly. And I think that you could, you, there, there is a, there is a, it is not an unfair thing to say, but the treacle is totally leavened by the, uh, by the insane goofy silliness of it. I mean, it is, it is, it is a movie that matches up film genres. I mean, they're switching between from the matrix to like Wong Kar Wai dramas to, uh, again, literal cartoons to, um, crouching tiger, hidden dragons type stuff to there's a Ratatouille reference, all of this, all of this kind of gets thrown into a blender, mixed up, cut, splice, and just thrown back in audiences faces at about a hundred beats per minute. I mean, it is a, it is a fast paced, um, to describe the film as experimental is not correct exactly, but it is, it is experimenting with how much you can mix and match genres before people, uh, bail on, on the thing. I love this movie. I really think it is. I really think it is wonderful. I, I am, I, as a fairly cynical person, I found myself unexpectedly moved by it. Um, and as a, uh, as a lover of film, I loved how the directors, uh, who are known collectively as Daniels, it's a two director team, um, how they put this thing together, uh, how they mixed and matched genres. And again, it is just laugh out loud funny. I, I was, I, the theater I was in was constantly rolling. I don't know about you guys. I don't know what your, your experiences were like. There were definitely, there were definitely laughs. I mean, it was just like, uh, it was, it was, uh, it was, it was a big hit where I was. I loved it. Um, I, I found it both funny and touching, uh, and really well done. And I it's a hair too long. Probably. That's the only, that's the only complaint I would, I would have
Vic00:36:37with it. Anyway, loved it. Victorino JVL. Tell me your quadrants. I want to know. I want, okay, fine, fine. But then I want to get to you. We'll get, I'll give you my quadrants and then I want to flip to you about what you think, because I'm listeners don't have the benefit of the video that we get to see people's expressions and yours is, is very cryptic. So, uh, I gave the plot a B, you'd be surprised. Why is it a B? Because post-Marvel anything could be explained by
JVL00:37:05multiverse. Oh, why is this? Oh, it's multiverse. I cannot believe that this gets a B. The quadrants
Vic00:37:10are a lie. Now, why would you say an F or an A? From where you sit on plot? Oh, well, again, I've been watching this thing. F minus, minus, minus, minus. No, no, no, no. I texted Sonny as
JVL00:37:21I got out of the theater. I said, I can't wait to hear Vic give the plot score. It's a B because
Vic00:37:26who are all these people? Oh, they're just different people from multiverse. That's the answer. The answer is multiverse. It's a catch all now. So, okay. Well, I mean, it's kind of a cheat, but I mean, okay. So whenever I didn't understand something, oh, it can't be a cheat. If that's,
Sonny00:37:39it cannot be a cheat. If that's the whole premise of the film, if the premise of the film is that
Vic00:37:44why is this happening? Who are these? Oh, multiverse. Okay. So that's all. I just kept on going back to that. And that helped me get through two hours and 19 minutes.
Sonny00:37:51Explain, explain, explain to folks how, how does the multiverse hopping actually work?
Vic00:37:55What is the actual mechanics of it? That part is never, never explained, but it's never explained in any Marvel movie. Explain the everything bagel. Yeah. It's multiverse duration.
Sonny00:38:05C minus direction. B minus. It's a B. He doesn't understand any of it, but it's a B. Yeah.
Vic00:38:12Multiverse. Okay. Fine. They're just other dimensions that come into play and here they are. Okay. Actually it's all in her head. Oh, okay. So none of this really matters.
Guest00:38:21Solid dream. It's Dallas. Yeah. It's Dallas. It says why?
Vic00:38:26St. Elsewhere. It's not the end of St. Elsewhere. It's the little snow globe. Okay. Uh, action violence. I gave it an A. It was entertaining and it was, uh, and there were parts of it that were funny, including using the fanny pack as a weapon. Very funny. That was great. But I do feel that it was just too long. So I mean, if it's just tighter, it'll be better. Uh, sex nudity. I gave it a C. It got some bonus points for sex toys. It's pretty funny. Including the pixelated part where the guy hops on the thing. I love that. Let's just say the thing. The pixelation makes the joke easier. Yes, exactly. It would not have been. Uh, and so those are the quadrants JVL. Yeah.
JVL00:39:05I think, you know, I got a weird conflict. So I, I took a Shannon to see him. We went on a date. I'm, you know, I was glad you took Kate actually. Cause I said to Sonny, I said,
Vic00:39:16I hope he brought Kate. That might be why I gave it a B because I think I figured it out on my own. But in fact, she was just telling me throughout the movie what was happening.
Sonny00:39:24How many times did you ask her? How many times did you like me? Never say who is that?
JVL00:39:29Continue JVL. I, I don't know if I liked it, but I loved it. If that makes sense. Like I, and I don't know that I would see it again, but maybe I would, and maybe this will reward repeated viewing. And I'm sure that many film school candidates will write dissertations on this thing. It will become an absolute cult classic. It is wildly original, even though it's derivative. And it wears its influences on its sleeve. Yeah. And it's just joyous. Am I wrong to say that just like it is an unapologetic, it's a production by people who love film and who are celebrating film while telling this crazy story that maybe all hangs together or maybe doesn't, or maybe is intentionally left so open that you could interpret it in 500 different ways. You really could interpret it with the Vic Mattis, you know, nothing. It's all a dream. If you want to do and, and it's original and it looks great. It looks like a million bucks, even though I assume this is like a $40 million. Yeah. I'd love to know 25, 25. I mean, I just,
Sonny00:40:46so I movie was made. This is what we relatively movies to be that does that I guess is what
JVL00:40:53I would say. Um, that this is when we talk about the movies and what we what we care about with movies, why they matter to us, why we want them to be saved. It's because of this and stuff like this, that doesn't work as like a streaming show. Yeah.
Vic00:41:12So this thing about what this would look like on your TV, right? I mean, it just wouldn't. I was curious about how well it's doing because everybody's talking about it is now becoming critically acclaimed, but, uh, it hasn't made a lot of money because it's not in a lot of
Sonny00:41:27theaters. Well, it, it opened, I mean, it opened three weekends ago. So this, by the time people are listening to this, it'll be it's fourth Friday. I think the first weekend it was only playing in New York and LA second weekend. It was playing in New York, LA, Austin, Chicago, DC, um, couple other places. This, this last weekend, it was in 1200 screens. I think it's going to be in more, this weekend's going to be 1500, 1800, 1800 screens, something like that. So it's, it's doing a fairly traditional platform release where, you know, it is, it is, it opens in the cities. It does really well with critics. I think it's 97 or 96% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. Um, and it's, it, you know, I don't know, I don't know what the, uh, I don't, I, there isn't a cinema score yet cause it hasn't played on enough screens to qualify for a cinema score, um, uh, rating. But, uh, my understanding is that the, the tracking is all very, very good. It's the sort of movie that I kind of expected, frankly, more people to really hate. I expected this movie to be kind of a, one of these, these films where like 80% of the, 80% of the people give it an A and 20% give it an F and not much, not much in the, you would have to, not much in the middle. Nobody who
JVL00:42:37loves movies could hate it. I don't think you don't, you don't have to fall in love with it, but you can't hate it. It's just too earnest in its celebration of cinema and
Sonny00:42:48it's love of cinema. But it's so weird. It's so weird. It is like, it is, it is a very, very weird movie. It is a very, uh, it is, again, it is, uh, people are describing it. I don't like this term, but people are describing it as maximalist cinema, which is a, you know, is, is a, I think of it is, it comes across as derisive because I, uh, because it feels like they're trying to, you know, reduce it to a thing, which is this kind of scattershot shotgun approach to, to filmmaking. I don't think it is that. Um, but it is, there is a lot, there's a lot going on here. Uh, and, um, folks for like really being put off by the muchness of it. Um, but I film is not trying
JVL00:43:34to overwhelm you with the muchness. It's, it's inviting you into it. I, I just think it's a very welcoming feel. I agree. Uh, so your guys theaters were into it. Yeah. Into
Vic00:43:46it. Yes. And, and, and there, the, the moment there are even for my, I didn't, you know, I chuckled. I didn't really laugh at love, but the part I probably was most amused by is when you got to the, um, the hotdog finger situation where everybody's in the alternate, the mo the universe where people's fingers are hotdogs and you're, and they're trying to figure out how, how, how the hell did this happen? And they do a 2001 where the, the, the actual, you know, with opposable did, you know, those though they died, they, they lost the battle. And then the, the apes with the, with the, the hot dog, the big feet day
JVL00:44:20one, they want that. It was very funny. Uh, yeah, I mean, so there, okay. So the, the thing I love most about it actually is the choice to center this idea around a laundromat and taxes, because those are the two most eternal things that exist in our day to day lives, right? You, there are always taxes every year and there's just always more laundry. And when you are talking about the re because this movie, it really is there. It's a fractal, right? It's, it's, there's, it's endlessly recursive. You know, you focus on any little bit. It looks like the whole of it. And the ideas of laundry and taxes fall to that so perfectly that it just, I don't know. I just admire the care in, in which those choices were made. Uh, I, you know, I literally wrote down to myself, how is it that this movie got made without casting Aquafina in it? Because doesn't Aquafina gets cast and everything. She would have been the daughter. No. Well then I, I went to, she was, she was the daughter and I went to, and I, it's funny. What happened? Because she was cast as the daughter. I, I don't know, maybe Sonny does, but Stephanie Sue. There was a conflict. Who is fantastic in this. And I would have. Maybe the best thing in the movie. I would have hated Aquafina in this. Yeah. I don't like her presence. I'm, I'm sure she's a wonderful human being. I don't like her screen presence. You, you never liked her in, in movies that were seen. And Stephanie Sue, I think is actually the best thing in the movie and she's just fabulous. Yeah. And it's one of these, thank God Aquafina got too busy. Because she had to go star in a bunch of Marvel movies or something. Yeah. Because Stephanie Sue, who I've never heard of before is just fab. And the other thing is did Sonny, did you go to an Alamo?
Sonny00:46:07I did. Did you get there early? No. So I went to a preview. There was no, there was no like, there was no like pre-roll. It was just like, they didn't, they didn't have like the pre-show.
JVL00:46:19So a big part of the pre, we got there pretty early cause it was date night and there was a 15 minute pre-roll, which was just an extended interview with Michelle Yao. And it was fantastic. Her very, so she was a ballerina. So she had studied ballet in England and then went back to, went to Hong Kong, I think. And her first bit of casting she's cast, she's 22 years old in a commercial for this fashion watch. Like, you know, which has like some French like neighbor and is her and Jackie Chan.
Vic00:47:00Yeah, that's funny. Isn't that fantastic? She must be old now. And so she then got cast
JVL00:47:08with like Sammo, Sammo hung Sammo, Sammo hung and got into all of his movies. And it was largely because of her ballet background that she just picked up the, the intense and very, you know, Baroque choreography. For the fight stuff was very easy for her because she was intensely flexible and was just used to, you know, being at a bar, seeing somebody do a bunch of positions and just, you know, repeating it. Anyway, it was just fabulous. The whole Michelle Yao 15 minutes was honestly worth the price of the ticket all by itself. She's fascinating and great.
Vic00:47:45That's good. Uh, that, that, that sounds like a nice little treat. If you go to Alamo, uh, we got another trailer for dark Phoenix, I guess. I don't know when it's coming out, but did you get the new top gun trailer? Oh, that is fantastic. The, the, the, the one. Okay. Well, that's what Vic's looking forward to. You know, is it, I haven't been looking forward to a movie that that's coming up a hundred hours of footage. I have great, I have great concerns because they show, uh, Val Kilmer as an Admiral and I get the story. I already know what's happening, but is he in the movie in the movie or just not just his picture, his portrait. Don't know. Because of the thing.
JVL00:48:23Maybe he's like grand Moff Tarkin, the grand Moff Tarkin, another voice on him. Well, animated,
Vic00:48:30right. You know, yeah, that was, no, I hope not, but I, it looks great. And I hope it's because they actually use jets the way they did in 86. Tell me they did. Oh, thank God.
JVL00:48:43I was, you know, all that footage. Sunny, do you love all the same? Oh, hung stuff.
Sonny00:48:47Are you a Hong Kong cinema? I'm not, I'm not, I'm honestly not a big Hong Kong martial arts. Uh, guys, I, I find it all pretty, I, any, I I'll put it this way. Anytime I watch it, I'm like, oh yeah, this is, this is good. This is well done, but it has just never been
JVL00:49:03the sort of stuff, uh, I'm into. So I see why people are so into it. And a big part of it is because again, show you, I've talked about this. She said, you know, it was very much a grindhouse scene and it was being put out by these guys who, I mean, there, there is no USC film school in Hong Kong. And then period, right. It's, it is all piratical. It is, you know, guys who just want to make movies and you know, they got their friends, they can get their hands on a camera and like, let's just go shoot it. You know, we'll shoot it in, in three weeks and we'll just use our friends and quick and dirty. And I get that. Like there's an energy to it, which is great
Sonny00:49:44in which you, and that, that energy is in this movie. I mean, a lot of this stuff, the, the, the, the Daniel's talked about this in one of the interviews, one of the million interviews that they've done for this movie, but they, they were talking about how like the, the fight choreographers on this film were just guys who learned it from watching YouTube videos who learned like watching like choreography from YouTube and, and like watching, watch tons of movies and figured out, you know, kind of how to break it down scene by scene and shot by shot and do it that way. You know, it's, it's, it's, it, it has that sort of kinetic energy to it. And again, I like, I like Jackie Chan. I like Sam along. I like I, they, they, they are fine talents. I just has never been my, my scene. So I watch, I watch the old ones. So what I watch for
Vic00:50:34the Bruce Lee, the Bruce Lee, Fists of Fury, also known as the big boss. And then a return of the dragon, enter the dragon, even though it's they do it, the return of the dragon came first and editor, the dragon, uh, the Chinese connection, which I think was after Fists of Fury and then game of death, which was not finished because so far. So Sonny,
JVL00:50:52tell me if this sounds crazy to you, but everything everywhere, all at once felt to me like a movie that in an alternate universe, Quentin Tarantino could have directed early in his career.
Sonny00:51:06Yeah. I mean, there's definitely that sort of, uh, pastiche vibe to it, but, but again,
JVL00:51:14past each born of love. Right. And, and there's an energy to it and of a faciousness. The
Sonny00:51:21closest, the closest Tarantino equivalent would be the kill bill movies. The two, the
JVL00:51:26two kill bill films, but even those are much more self-important. I mean, you had to go
Vic00:51:29back to like early Tarantino. In fact, when Evelyn meets her sensei in the alternative universe, which was very funny about how did she become a martial arts? Everything is Kung Fu. This cookie is Kung Fu. The, the woman, uh, I, that reminded me of, I think it was a woman, but reminded me of the, of Uma Thurman sensei and kill bill. Yeah. The white hair.
Sonny00:51:51I liked it. Maybe I would go see it again. I don't know. I, I am definitely going to go see it again. The, I came out of the theater almost woozy. Were you weeping? I was, well,
Vic00:52:01I wouldn't say weeping, but also when people say, when people who I, I hear this a lot and, and seeing the reaction to this movie about people who cried, what, why are, what part of it do they, are they crying about? I mean, I think it's, it's a movie about
Sonny00:52:21parents and children. I mean, like, I, I, like, I, I could, I can see that. I, it's a movie about, you know, uh, a trying to make the best world for your children and like not quite being able to do it or not quite connecting with them. Um, and realize, I don't know, man, I like it. It's very much a vibes film, right? That's, that's what everybody, the vibes, vibe shift, the vibe shift is towards positivity, positive, positive thinking. Um, but no, I like, I came out of the theater. Like I, I have not felt that way coming out of a theater since the first matrix, since the original matrix, like that, that movie. Well, there's a matrix element to this as well, because what is the reality? Um, the, the bagel constant, the everything. It's not really, what is reality Vic? It's, it's, nevermind.
Vic00:53:20It was pretty interesting. It was pretty easy to understand in my universe. I guess I didn't really think too deeply about it, but, uh, yeah, you know, I mean, what is, I don't know. Is any of this real? I don't know. It's just, it was like a philosophy class. Uh, I, I, I thought it was just okay. I, I feel like so many of these people are really yeah. Sunny. We found one. I know it's rare. It's rare. There you go. One, one, two, three, three,
JVL00:53:44zero one, two. I thought you were going to like it, Vic. I feel sad for these people.
Vic00:53:50It's like, uh, you know, particularly the daughter or, or I guess, and in the embodiment of Joe boo, these are people who are not, they're lost and these are terrible times. But I think for these people who are going through the last two or three years and I know personally for me, it's like if you're not grounded in anything, in any particular faith, whatever it is, so here's looking for an answer for order in the universe and meaning in life. And that's where Joe boo is like, there is none, you know? And uh, but you know, and Oh wait, there is, it's the multiverse.
Sonny00:54:24It's not the multiverse. It's the family, man. It's not, it's not, she, she's not, she's not, she doesn't find order in the multiverse. She finds order and connection with her mother. But here's, so what's, what's interesting is another friend of mine, one of the other few conservative film critics, I know a guy named Victor Morton, he hated this movie, hated it. Um, and he is a very, he is a very religious person and his problem with the movie was mostly ontological. He simply like, could not accept the multiverse element to it. And I wonder if that's part of your problem as well.
Vic00:54:59Yeah. It's the idea of God forbid world. God forbid we're special. We can't possibly be alone there. Oh, the good. There's other versions of us because then how do we explain that we're the only people in the universe right now in these conditions? Sort of very weird. And Oh wait. Okay. Well there's other versions. So then we're not special. This is the rock. This is the Joe Boo as, or the daughter of Joe Boo as the rock was saying that, you know, Oh, we used to think we were the center of the universe, but we're not. And we thought the sun was the center of it. It's not, we're just one of many millions. We are nothing. And, and then she goes off the cliff and I'm like,
Sonny00:55:35But the whole point of the movie is not that we are nothing.
Vic00:55:37That's right. No, that's why I'm saying it's, you know, it was, I felt sad because you know, she's lost.
JVL00:55:44Victorino, you, you understand that the multiverse is a metaphor.
Vic00:55:49The whole thing is in her head anyway, because she's having a metaphor for a way to talk
JVL00:55:55about families in the way that intergenerational trauma is passed. This is basically half matrix and half in Canto.
Vic00:56:01Can you give me like a big trouble in little China? That's easy to understand with, with the great James.
Sonny00:56:07This has the big trouble in little China stuff. I mean, it's, I like, this is what I find very fascinating is that it is, it's a movie that is. It's never slow. It is filled with action. It is filled with comedy. It is, it is filled with references to movies that you like. I like, it seems like the sort of thing you would actually be into. I think I'm just getting tired of watching movies.
JVL00:56:33CGI overload, but there's not a CGI overload.
Sonny00:56:35There's no CGI any, there's no CGI in this movie.
JVL00:56:37I was waiting for Vic to complain about CGI overload, but it's. Yeah, no, you know, you know, just get, get the old man green mile.
Vic00:56:45What did Kate think? Just get the old man green mile. Interesting. She thought it was interesting.
JVL00:56:50Shannon really liked it. What did Beth think?
Vic00:56:53She hasn't seen it.
JVL00:56:54No. I was shocked that Shannon liked it and, and, and pleased pleasantly so.
Vic00:57:00The everything bagel concept is also very interesting. The more you put on it, the less it tastes like anything and then it's nothing. By the way, invented by Joe Bastianich.
Sonny00:57:10You realize it's, you realize it's not a literal bagel, right?
Vic00:57:15You guys are way too sophisticated for me. I think you need something. I think you need somebody with smarter than me on this show because I just want, I don't give a shit. I just don't give a shit of these fucking movies. I'm, I'm tired. I gotta take like, I need like six months off and I'll come back and maybe it'll be better movies. I can't do this anymore. This is like, ah, I just, I hate going to the theater and seeing these movies that I just don't give a shit about. Wow.
JVL00:57:39We're having a whole breakdown on the show.
Vic00:57:41Right here on the show before, I'm just so tired of these fucking movies.
JVL00:57:47Did you like Encanto?
Vic00:57:49No, of course not. I did like Tokyo Vice, but that's the bonus.
JVL00:57:57That's a tease. It is. Just the tip.
Vic00:58:01Do you have any other thoughts on, uh, everything everywhere happening all over the place? Really complex, deep metaphors of life and women, whatever it is. I don't know. I don't know. I'm just like, I'm looking at it. You like deep water. Yeah. Deep water was yeah. Well, for obvious reasons, which by the way, my dad, my, my dad, I'm on the phone with him today and I said, what are you watching these days? And he goes, oh, I saw deep water. And I said, oh, really? What did you think? He goes, that wife is crazy. I said, yes, yes she is. So there you go.
JVL00:58:39I don't even really remember what deep water was. What? Oh, it was the, the girl from the Ben Affleck.
Vic00:58:45I'd already forgotten. I'll blend together. Paul Crookston was asking me, you know, like, uh, was this, uh, the Morbius was, was that worse than moonfall? I said, what's moonfall?
Sonny00:58:55Hmm.
Vic00:58:56Okay. Do you have any other thoughts? Anything else? No.
Sonny00:59:02Okay.
Vic00:59:03We need to get you some brain pills. Spirit of the week. Corrections. Shout outs.
JVL00:59:07I don't have anything.
Vic00:59:08You guys are way too sophisticated. I'm sorry. That's all the time. No, I'm. You know.
Sonny00:59:13What? Go ahead, Sonny. I'm, I'm mostly just worried about your memory now.
Vic00:59:17You know. Uh, questions, comments. I remember the, I did. I told you, I forgot. Uh, Jean shallots, last name, uh, questions, comments, compliments, tweet us at Sonny Bunch at Victorino Mattis. Again, be sure to subscribe to us on Patrion, blah, blah, blah, uh, just go to Sub-Beacon. We're there. Tell your friends until next time.
JVL00:59:36I will tell you.
Vic00:59:46Uh, you know, Asian women, not really my thing. And yet that joy, I found her intriguing. That's interesting. I just, I found her intriguing.
Sonny01:00:01As the agent of chaos, Joe blue to Paki or as joy.
Vic01:00:05As joy. Okay. Ish. I don't know.
JVL01:00:09I, the, the costuming on Joe blue to Paki throughout the movie. Original. Is sensational. Yeah. It's so great. I like when she's as the golfer is again, so many levels. And then there's like a, as a, she looked great in manga video key in character. It's fantastic. Uh, Vic, I'm worried about Jerry. You're right, buddy. Maybe you need a glass of red wine. No, I'm just sick. Maybe. I really am. We get off from, from work. Hey, go on a vacation, go down to Disney.
Vic01:00:44I'm not going to Disney. Okay, I'm sure it's fine.
