Guest00:00:00When the waters began to rise and war broke out, nostalgia became a way of life, there wasn't a lot to look forward to, so people began looking back, nothing is more addictive than the past. No, no, no, no, no, put me back, put me back.

Sub-Beacon is now available through Patreon, go to sub-beacon.com, you'll easily find us, please subscribe, tell your friends, and don't forget about the Sub-Beacon. Sub-Beacon is a world-devouring cultural phenomenon that you have never heard of yourself, but which is honestly on par in terms of its total value with, like, Star Wars. The guy who created it, oh God, what's his name? Keith something or another. He lives in fucking Monaco, Keith Chapman, okay? It makes about a billion dollars a year in terms of merchandising. Merch. It's done more than $10 billion total. It is in brand sales almost every year, ranks number one ahead of both Frozen, the Disney Princesses, and Star Wars. The episodes just on the Nielsen's do something like 2 million viewers per 2 million viewers. The primetime hosts on Fox News would kill for those numbers, right? Toothpaste, backpacks, macaroni cups. Lunchboxes, toys, apps for your Kindle kids. Paw Patrol is everywhere. And the reason is, are you ready for this? Because Paw Patrol is the brazzers of children's cartoons.
Vic00:43:48It's that good. Wow.
JVL00:43:50No, no, not that good. So where children's cartoons used to traffic in things like characters, or episodes, or adventure, or stories, or ideas, like space. Paw Patrol is this. It is like when Johnny Doe shows up at Jack Horner's house and is like, we could just shoot it on VHS and just shoot the good scenes. You know, we don't need to tell stories. We just do the money shots.
Vic00:44:24Get right to the action, right.
JVL00:44:25So what Paw Patrol presupposes, so what is it that young, young, young children like? Well, they like puppies. They like trucks. And they like, they like it when children order grown-ups around. So what if, I'm just thinking out loud here, we had a bunch of puppies who drive trucks and they all serve under this seven-year-old child who orders the grown-ups around who he is saving. And these puppies are rescue puppies or something.
Sonny00:44:57Yet, even though they are rescue puppies, Municipal service puppies.
JVL00:45:01They also, so one of them drives a police car. One of them drives a fire truck. But you also have a construction vehicle. You also have a garbage vehicle. Why would we have a garbage vehicle in a rescue team? Kids need to learn about recycling, man. The answer is because little kids are fucking obsessed with garbage trucks. That's why. They love them. And so we'll just put it in there. And we'll have a girl puppy. And you'll know she's a girl because she wears pink. And she gets the... You're saying it's basically marketed. She buys a helicopter. She gets the helicopter slash... It's not even a focus group. This is like from Big. You know, when you sit around with the kids, you're like, what do you want? Like, oh, you know. And then we'll do that. The grown-up is like, well, I have a building that's a transformer. No, we don't want that. We just want puppies that drive garbage trucks. And that's what this is. It's Brazzers. It's all money shots. And it is with this pulsating music. All right, pulsating. All right, now. Hold on. A billion tiny hammers going into your skull at all times. And it's herky-jerky. And it is the most insipid kids cartoon I've ever seen. The movie is the single worst kids movie I have ever seen.
Sonny00:46:19And the movie is a million times better than the TV show, is the funny thing. The movie is actually much, much better.
Vic00:46:25You asked me to watch on YouTube, and my goodness.
JVL00:46:29About every seven minutes, G-Money turned to me and shouted at the top of his lungs,
Vic00:46:34"This is the greatest movie I've ever seen! Dad, I love this movie so much! Dad, did you see what Chase just did?"
JVL00:46:43And I was just like, "Oh, my God."
Vic00:46:46I was going to ask you, because I saw it is an hour and 26, which is... Is it? In the quadrants, that's like an A+. But for this purpose, was it the longest hour, 26? 26 of your life.
JVL00:47:00No. Well, I mean, you know, so here's the... But here is, you know, here's something we talk about a lot, about the joy of the theatrical experience. Paw Patrol is simultaneously streaming on the Plus. I guess Paramount. We don't have a...
Sonny00:47:13Paramount Plus.
JVL00:47:14On Paramount Plus. Paramount Plus. I chose to take my kid to the theater to see it.
Sonny00:47:19You took three kids to the theater.
JVL00:47:20Three kids to the theater to see it, because I thought, you know what? It'll just be different. It'll be an adventure. It'll be an experience. I never take G-Money to the movies. You know, G-Money was like three and a half years old when COVID hits, right? You don't take three-year-olds to the movies. And I, you know, I spent whatever it costs to take like four people plus popcorn, plus the delicious soft-baked chocolate chip cookies that they serve at the Alamo. You get meal.
Vic00:47:45You get meal at it.
JVL00:47:46And you know what? It was totally different than watching it at home on Paramount Plus. And at home on Paramount Plus, it would have been entertaining content that G-Money enjoyed. But having done it at the theater... The theater was an adventure and something that he loved. Yeah. Because the theatrical experience is different and better.
Sonny00:48:05Yeah, yeah, yeah. Different and better. Sorry. I actually saw, I saw Reminiscence on IMAX. Ooh. Which is probably one of the reasons why I have given it more of a pass than anybody else. Maybe. Uh, question. At the Drafthouse, did you only have to buy one thing of popcorn? Yeah. So, this, this, I took, I took, the whole family went to go see Paw Patrol here in Dallas. And our theater was full. Our theater was sold out. Uh, but the, we bought one, eight dollar order of popcorn and they gave us an immediate free refill, uh, and, and our two year old just ate popcorn, just shoveled popcorn in his mouth the whole time, uh, to the point where we had to get a refill just for him basically. Um, and then, uh, and so it was like $8 for like bottomless popcorn for four people, which is the greatest innovation in the movie going experience.
Vic00:48:59It's $36 at AMC at least, maybe more, but the, the, the, the getting the refill is what you're saying is that you have to leave in the middle of the movie to get, no, they come to you. Have you never been to an hour?
Sonny00:49:11Have you never been to a draft house in there? No. Wow. You're missing out. And I come to you and they just bring you more popcorn. That's insane. And I said to a waitress, they just bring you a new metal, Dave, these metal bowls and they bring you to a new metal bowl full of pop.
JVL00:49:25I said to, I said to the waitress when we checked in, I said, do you, do you need me to order two popcorns? Since there's four of us. Same. That's what I said. And she said, no, I'll just put it in two separate bowls. And when you're ready for refills, let me know. That's all. Yeah.
Sonny00:49:38I was like, thank you. We also, we also bought four beers, uh, you know, one for one for my wife and I, and then one for each of the kids.
JVL00:49:44We did not. I, I tell you what, uh, into the spider verse is playing for one show only tomorrow, uh, that is G money's favorite movie of all time. That's a good movie. And I've only seen it on the big screen once. If I can make it work. Yeah. With the various work stuff I had going on tomorrow, I think I'm going to steal out of there and take him to go see spider verse on the big screen.
Sonny00:50:05Nice. It'll be good. I, uh, I have to say, uh, do you hate it as much as I did Sonny? I'm a little, I'm a little surprised. I'm not surprised to hear you down on this show in this movie, because as we all know, you are an all pups are bastards figure. You do not. You want to defund the paw patrol and let the, you want to let Mayor Humdinger run wild on the streets with his auntie antifa cronies. Uh, and I, I get that. I get that. But I have to say, I really appreciate a show that is willing to, uh, make the police are heroes and to teach children the importance of obeying authority in the figure of dogs and seven year old boys. Uh, I think that it is a, I think it's a, it's, it's really nice to have a, have somebody out there saying, you know, we need to, we need to listen to the police pups, uh, who are just there to help us. Who are there to help us. They are there. The, the thin, the thin blue paw between law and order, uh, it's, it's Chase and Ryder and the rest of the gang of the Paw Patrol. So kudos to the Paw Patrol for teaching right and wrong to the young people of our country and Canada.
JVL00:51:16Did you pick up on the two problematic aspects of the movie Sonny?
Sonny00:51:20No.
JVL00:51:21The first is that the villain, Mayor Humdinger is a single gentleman with a village people mustache who loves cats and wears, loves dressing well, wears fancy purple clothing and pink boxers.
Sonny00:51:39Top hats. Top hats. He's a dandy.
JVL00:51:42And yeah, maybe he's just a dandy and he's the bad guy somehow.
Sonny00:51:45Well, he's the most villainous person that anyone is. This is why we need police is to keep these perverts online.
JVL00:51:52Subtle anti-gay thing. It's like, you know, Putin's Paw Patrol. But the, the other thing is the, the new, this movie. It really only exists to introduce a new character to sell merchandise around, uh, Liberty in Liberty is, uh, you remember the pizza place near me at the beach and I sent you the, the, the, the picture of the box with the guy with the Marriott brothers mustache and two on
Vic00:52:17the nose.
JVL00:52:18Lisa is a, she's an urban, urban dog who's friends with Tony, Tony, the grocer, and she's got a little bit, she's, she talks a little bit like Marissa Tomei and she, her, when she finally joins the team, you talk about giving, giving, giving one of the dogs a short stick. What did, what is her vehicle? A Vespa scooter.
?00:52:40Ooh.
Sonny00:52:41What? So you're saying she's an Italian? Yeah. You're saying she's an eye tie.
JVL00:52:46I'm saying that this is, this is practically gabagool levels of, uh, stereotyping of Italian Americans.
Sonny00:52:54I'm not sure if I, I, I, the, the humdinger thing. I, I, I can. I can see I'm not a hundred percent sure about this.
JVL00:53:01Uh, it's you guys may or may not be shocked to know how many like dissertations have been written about the politics of Paw Patrol.
Vic00:53:11Oh, I knew there was a story, uh, some years ago on CNN, uh, about the authoritarian nature of Paw Patrol. Yes.
JVL00:53:19Yeah. Yeah. Yes. There is that. I did laugh when the, the very first adventure, uh, is that a, an African American gentleman goes to get rescued by the police. Dog. And when the police dog shows up, the African American gentleman is initially not too thrilled. I thought to myself, really no shit. Like, uh, it's, it's an amazing, you know, so do you guys have favorite kids cartoons? And I don't mean like hipster cartoons from adults, just like what they used to like when they, so things that your kids that are on now, no, not necessarily now either from your childhoods or from your kids' childhoods. So like stuff that when your kids watch Vic that you thought, yeah, you know what? That's pretty good. No. Boy.
Vic00:54:10Let me think. You know what? I loved, I loved anything on the, the good night show, uh, Nick at night with Nina, you remember her?
JVL00:54:18I remember her. And she's probably, you wrote about her.
?00:54:20Yeah.
Vic00:54:21Did I? She's probably, she's probably like old now, but you know, probably 25, she wore, she wore a, she always wore the same pajama pants.
Sonny00:54:33I don't know what this is.
JVL00:54:34I have no idea what you guys are going to casual about this is the pervious casual joke
Vic00:54:39about like, like if you auction off the pants, is that, is that what I was, I can't remember what I said.
JVL00:54:45Something like, I always wondered how they smell.
Vic00:54:46I don't know. No, that was in my head. I never put that down. I don't remember. I never read that into print to come on now, Claudia was trying to figure out why you would want to smell. She was so cute.
JVL00:54:58She ever needed. Sit someplace. She could sit on my face.
Sonny00:55:01Terrible. Terrible. That doesn't seem like a very comfortable place to sit. Could you explain? Right.
Vic00:55:08Oh, Claudia would ask that. Right. What does that mean? Uh, the, it was her and star was like the stuffed animal and the stuff star. Uh, but I'll tell you what I was never a fan of and nobody was in this house and Kate used to hate it. Is that the wiggles? Yeah, that was really sad. They were the worst. Um, my son used to watch a show that is no longer on called make way for naughty and it was terrible. But anytime I think about it, I always think about when he, when he was young. But I'm trying to think about for me as a kid, the answer is star blazers.
JVL00:55:42Sure. That was cartoon.
Vic00:55:44I was in third grade.
JVL00:55:45Let me, let me throw this at you boys, uh, on the Disney plus machine, not in the kids profile. You have to mean in the adult profile, look up Spider-Man and his amazing friends. This was a Saturday morning. Oh yeah. It's an eighties. I love that.
Vic00:56:02I love that.
JVL00:56:03You know what? It's very, okay. It's not very good. It is pretty good. It's got a weird, no, it's better than passable because they, they really work in the whole Marvel universe. Oh, it is shocking how many Marvel characters show up.
Vic00:56:17There were some, there were some episodes where it was like the three villains and it was like a Scorpio, a Scorpion and green goblin and mysterious or electro and it was fantastic.
JVL00:56:26You even get, you even get magneto was there. Yeah. You get not only the spider verse villains, but you get mutant villains. You get, uh, Avengers villains and they live, the three of them live together and there's a whole like sometime, you know, they're always, they're both hitting on her and it's not clear who she's down with and star fire.
Vic00:56:45If I could just say, I'm sorry. I thought you meant the, the old, old one from the sixties, you know, Spider-Man Spider-Man that. No, no, I know that one.
JVL00:56:54This is the one that was in the eighties.
Vic00:56:55Yes. I watch it. That was a Saturday cartoon. Yup. Yeah. I didn't think they were real superhero part and they're not, they are except for her. So Iceman.
JVL00:57:05Right. So it was Iceman and Spider-Man and star fire was created just for that. She was a new character who never caught on the comics, but it's actually pretty good. And there is, you know, it's funny, it's early eighties, but it has a very seventies vibe to it.
Vic00:57:19I enjoyed it. It was great. And Stan Lee was the voiceover.
JVL00:57:22He was Stan Lee is in the voice. I am telling you, if you go and just pull up an episode of, with it, it is. Way better than you think.
Sonny00:57:30Yeah. I mean, I grew, I grew up in the, the golden age of comic book TV car. So you were like, like Batman, the X-Men series, the X-Men animated series, the, uh, um, uh, the Superman, the Paul Dini Superman, uh, series. And then, God, there was there, I mean, there was all a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't really comic book, but it was kind of like adjacent to all this, like gargoyles, gargoyles was awesome. That was, that was, I had gargoyles is amazing. Gargoyles is amazing. It's like, it's like all of the shakes. It's like Shakespeare. It's like Macbeth and Shakespeare, like all wrapped into cartoon form with like Midsummer nights. It's, it's, it's really fascinating. Like what it was.
JVL00:58:16I was forced to watch a couple episodes of that with G money a few months ago when he stumbled upon it somewhere.
Sonny00:58:21And I was the original gargoyles. It's good.
JVL00:58:24Good show. It practically killed me.
Sonny00:58:26It's got, it's got a bunch of voices. The next generation star Trek, the next generation guys do voices like Michael Dorn and still better than paw patrol Riker.
Vic00:58:35Oh, you know what I was going to say? You know what I did like when the kids were younger Phineas and Ferb.
JVL00:58:40Oh yeah, I like Phineas and Ferb.
Vic00:58:43They would follow adults, you know, from time to time.
JVL00:58:47Something funny. There's a lot of adulty stuff in it. Yeah. Great reference. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I, G money has gotten into teen Titans go. Oh, and I find that deeply funny and it surprises me. That he likes it because a lot of it is very adult, swimmy pop culture, uh, humor. Like, you know, Robin, when Robin looks into the mirror and sees himself often, what the reflection he sees is Tommy Wussow, basically it's like Robin as the, you know, the guy from the room with the, the long crazy.
Sonny00:59:20Yeah. Yeah. I don't like that show.
JVL00:59:23I don't care for it. It's a, it grows on you. It grows on you.
Sonny00:59:26I don't care. I don't care for that whole aesthetic. It's very like super cartoony.
JVL00:59:31It's like the power puff girls, which is a style, uh, what about SpongeBob?
Vic00:59:37Was that ever a thing for, not for us? I was too.
JVL00:59:40I, I, I, I know people love it.
Sonny00:59:42I think there, there, there are people and there are people my age who really loved it, but I think I was just slightly too old for it. I never got into it. Uh, I never got into that. All right. Well, anyway, pop troll was great. Everyone should go see it. Take your kids to learn, to appreciate a thing.
JVL00:59:59You know what? Take your kids because they'll love it. They'll love it. And if, if being, being with your kid, being with your kid in a theater and they really
Vic01:00:08love something, it's great that, uh, so you said that was G money's first movie in a theater.
JVL01:00:14I think we've gone one other time, but so long ago, again, cause pandemic, uh, that for him, this was his first one. I'm sure he does not remember being in a movie theater, right?
Vic01:00:24You know what? I remember going with my son to his, like his first movie that he remembers going to a theater. Uh, it was Madagascar two, which by comparison to Paw Patrol, it sounds like it's Godfather too. Basically. Yeah. Okay. Uh, well then we're ready to move on. Uh, corrections, shout outs, anything I have, believe it or not, I have a spirit of the week. Um, thanks to, uh, Laura Orland at Savona, uh, for sending over a bottle of Japanese vodka. Yes. What don't they do? What don't they do? Uh, it's called Haku, not Haiku, but Haku. It's how do you pronounce it? Victorino? Haku. Congratulations. 10,000 cars. Everyone who you got, everyone watch gung ho. It's still a great movie. Uh, Haku is a hundred percent bamboo charcoal filtered spirit distilled from Japanese rice. Enjoyed icy cold meat or as a martini. Uh, I brought a bottle. Look at this.
Sonny01:01:24Um, oh boy. Isn't that nice? That's a Japanese. Is this the one that you got?
JVL01:01:28A tiny little taster of like a few months ago and we're like, Ooh, I want that.
Sonny01:01:34Was it, was this the same brand? That was a, that was a, that was a Scotch. No, different, different. Oh, right. Thank you. Or whiskey. It was a Japanese whiskey. Not Japanese.
Vic01:01:42Scotch. I had a Japanese whiskey last night. I had hot to Zaki. Hey. How's that pronounced? It's a, it's a, it's the sharpest sword ever. Oh, sorry.
Sonny01:01:51That's a Hattori.
Vic01:01:52Hattori Hansa. Okay. That is all. I know.
Sonny01:01:56I have a shout out. I have a shout out. Sam Huffines. Sam Huffines. I love Sam Huffines. Thank you very much. He sent me, sent me a very nice gift card to go to get some fajitas, fajitas in Tejas. Taco Bell.
JVL01:02:07Taco Bell. No, yes, yes.
Sonny01:02:09No, but I'm looking forward to doing that. I was thinking, I was thinking there are a lot of Sub-Beacon listeners in Dallas. Maybe we should do a movie night. Let me know. Let me know in the comments if people are up for that. Maybe we'll go to the draft house or something. So a lot of people, a lot of, a lot of listeners in Dallas. Excellent. But then again, maybe we won't, we won't hear from any of them and I won't have to actually leave my house. So you know. Either way. Okay. Either way, I win. Thank you, Sonny. But yeah.
Vic01:02:36No, thank you, Sam. Great. That is all the time we're giving to this episode. Questions, comments, compliments. Tweet us @SonnyBunch, @VictorinoMatus. Again, be sure to subscribe to us on Patreon. Just go to Sub-Beacon.com. We're there. Tell your friends. Until next time. Bye.
Sonny01:03:28Bye. We changed his. So if you remember at the end of the first Venom, he has that terrible wig, that terrible, terrible wig. And they changed his hair for the second one. It's like a normal haircut. It's just like a just like he's got he's got. Well, I mean, Woody Harrelson doesn't have hair, so it's I'm sure it's a wig of some sort.
Vic01:04:14But is there any acknowledgement that of Spider-Man at all in this? Because wasn't the original he the guy who plays him who becomes Venom? Right. He was he worked. I have a lot of I have a lot.
Sonny01:04:28of deeply nerdy thoughts about why Venom doesn't work. And the reason Venom doesn't work is because Venom only works as a villain for Spider-Man. And he's Spider-Man was nowhere to be seen in the first one. And my understanding is he is not in the second one. But it is technically in the broader Sony Spider-Verse thing. This Morbius, the movie Morbius starring Jared Leto, right? Jared Leto is also in this this universe. So, yeah. In theory, in theory,
Vic01:04:58in theory, Tom Hardy could show up in a Spider-Man movie as Venom at some point. And also Russell Crowe is in it as well as the isn't he is Dr. Jekyll or Mr. Hyde? Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Right. Yes. Yes, exactly. I'm sure it's fine.
